APPEARANCE: Daniel is a lanky young man, standing at five-foot-ten and weighing in at only a hundred and sixty some pounds. He has a mostly smooth olive complexion and dark brown, nearly black hair from his mother's Greek heritage. His father's Polish bone structure shows most strongly in him with his angular nose and body type. While Daniel is sure to dress neatly, he seems to avoid looking anything but casual and most often wears high necked long sleeved shirts and jeans. He's almost never seen without his green jacket or his black leather boots, which are meticulously polished and cared for. His left ear has one piercing, just a small silver hoop.
PERSONALITY: By and large, Daniel is a people-pleaser. He is unyieldingly polite, always using "miss" or "sir" to address others, even his peers when first meeting them, and will continue to do so until told otherwise. Even so, it's difficult for him to break out of the habit and he will likely need to be reminded. Nicknames are also difficult for him to get the hang of. It is often difficult for Daniel to say "no", especially if requests play to his sympathies; don't have enough time to do something? feel stressed and need a hand? he might be, too, but you can bet he'll take care of your problem first -- even if it's to his detriment. Conversation is difficult for Daniel, especially the informal sort. It's not something he's had a lot of practice with it, as he was raised in a fairly rigid environment with a stark dichotomy of solemnity and frivolity. As such, he clings to meaningless small talk as a crutch when, in reality, small talk stresses him out and he has a hard time keeping up such discussions. Daniel has his fair share of social anxieties that have been left unaddressed, to the point where he isn't even aware that's what they are; as far as he's concerned, he's just bad at talking.
It's easy to catch Daniel off guard. If he's left without knowing what to say or how to progress, he'll often devolve into unsure sounds, "um"s, and try to awkwardly laugh his way out of a conversation. He tries his best to keep as neutral and amiable attitude as humanly possible, which means he outwardly allows slights and insults to roll of his back with confused laughter and a good-natured smile, even if they actually cut deep. He absolutely does not deal well with confrontation and will attempt to avoid any situation festering with animosity, often at the expense of his self respect. Daniel may often feel smothered in large gatherings and crowds, and though he isn't phobic of them, the introversion is strong in this one and he may need to break away from groups to calm down and get some fresh air. Daniel is extremely self conscious, though mostly about his family and home. He dresses casually to make sure he doesn't look the part of a lawyer-politician rich boy son and tries not to talk about it if he can help it. He really enjoys the simple things in life and menial tasks, like cleaning, really calm him down.
Daniel finds enjoyment caring for things, whether they be inanimate or people, though he isn't very used to being around animals. Not in the least bit worried about getting his hands dirty, Danny won't turn down manual labor if someone needs help with it and he's a hard worker, whether it's favors, assistance, or his own scholastic experience. He is bilingual, able to speak and read English and Hebrew fluently (though he rarely uses the latter when not in a religious setting). His father has expressed annoyance and disappointment for him not taking interest or study in the Polish language, as he is a native. Daniel's mother doesn't seem bothered, and is the one who pushed him to learn Hebrew from a very young age, expecting him to keep up appearances with it during synagogue. Once in a while, his uncle and cousin will teach him scattered Russian phrases but he doesn't know anything more than that.
HISTORY:
Bolek Kalinska, a native of Poland, came to America with his father during his teen years. Jakob Kalinska was a holocaust survivor that met his wife, Malina, following the war. She developed a malignant tumor and passed away before Bolek was even ten years old. The two Kalinska men were looking forward to the prospect of the "American Dream" and, once Bolek finished his English studies and American education, he entered law school. Jakob's health declined some time after and Bolek was left on his own studying to be an attorney. One of his first cases was for a client whom he grew an unexpected attachment in, mostly due to her constantly calling him or sending him coffee after he won her case. Daria Levendakis was the spoiled daughter of then-mayor, Fremont Levendakis, and didn't understand the concept of "no". Their eventual marriage was due to Daria getting what she wanted and Bolek realizing he was lonely enough to tolerate it.
After their first child was born, Daria decided that was enough. Meanwhile, her sister Erika married a doctor and continued to pump out a new kid every few years. Daniel Jakob Kalinska was simultaneously sheltered, spoiled, and held to an exceptionally high standard. He grew up with money, privilege, and few friends. However, he interacted regularly with his incredibly bratty and ill behaved cousins, particularly due to Shabbos, holidays, and attending synagogue. Their negativity kept him in line, fearful of punishments should he be cajoled into their antics and mindful never to think or act as they did because he found them detestable. Daniel learned early on to keep his mouth shut and be as polite as possible. He had to make everyone happy, or at least keep them placated, because it was easier than setting off criticisms toward him for even having an opinion. He grew up trying to please everyone in a setting where no one would ever truly be appreciative of anything.
During preparation for his bar mitzvah, Daniel reeled and passed out. It was true he'd felt considerable stress on getting everything just right, thanks to his parents' pressures and the rest of his family. Having all of this attention solely on him made him nauseous almost constantly and he wished every night that it was already over or that he wasn't the oldest -- then it wouldn't have been as important. There was only one thing strange about him passing out; he'd had an out of body experience while doing so. Everyone said it was nerves, and he believed it too, but Daniel worried he'd actually had a near death experience because of all the stress. That was the first time he'd looked at himself from a distance but it certainly wasn't the last. Before long, his mother mentioned seeing faint figures in the hallway and eventually turned to talk of apparitions, spirits. His father dismissed it immediately and told her to get more sleep. Daniel, too. As Daniel's stress continued to build and his day of reckoning came closer, his mother's sightings of the apparition grew more frequent. She expressed fear and a desire to move, which Bolek adamantly objected as a waste of money and utterly pointless. She was just being irrational. This was proven true when Daniel fainted again and, this time, his astral projection was seen leaving his body.
To say that worries were calmed once it was determined not to have been ghosts after all would be ludicrous. Daria was in even more of a tizzy, Bolek was angry and confused, and the rest of Daniel's family was wary. As for himself, he was scared. After the initial freak out, Daniel was scheduled to follow through on the ceremony of his bar mitzvah but he soon ducked out of the subsequent festivities to rest and get away from everyone. Despite this, they continued to party at his expense. His young cousin Cybille, the only well behaved among her three older siblings, visited Daniel to give her gift, which she announced proudly she picked out herself. It certainly seemed to be something she would have liked to wear, rather than something for him, but he appreciated the thought and gesture and wore the jigsaw necklace for her to make her smile. Then he didn't take it off. It was one of the few comforts that gave him a sense of normalcy among among his relatives and he cherished its sentiment deeply.
When he wasn't up to his eyeballs in studying for school, Daniel began doing research on his own about his "condition". He managed to track down information about out of body experiences, how these tied into astral projection, and unearthed a good deal of information about psychics. The only problem was that all of the sources varied in their theories and interpretations and he couldn't narrow down his searches to figure out which ones were factual. It was only thanks to his uncle Lambert, his Aunt Erika's doctor husband, that he learned about the remote psychic government training facility -- Murmuring Pines. As it turned out, Lambert was a psychic himself, albeit an extremely passive and weak one. His uncle told Daniel to keep this fact under his hat, as well as where the information came from, and so Daniel pretended he found it all himself when he presented it to his parents. He felt pathetic. He had to beg and plead with them for weeks before they agreed to let him go that Summer. Daria didn't trust it at all and was still fearful and confused about the whole situation, and Bolek considered its necessity a point of contention. He didn't buy into the psychic business and made it no secret that he thought Daniel was being weak for relying on this type of crutch; that, somehow, seeking tutelage would enable it and make it worse. Finally, and with much trepidation, they agreed.
Daniel's first Summer after his bar mitzvah was spent at Murmuring Pines. He had a great deal of difficulty socializing and never made any friends. It was a relief he never had any bullies, either, and the other children were certainly amiable (if not, somewhat, pitiable given their mutual sympathies), but he was too shy to present himself as anything other than a boring kid, too quiet to keep up conversation, and the other kids all seemed about as nervous and awkward for the same reasons he was. Danny only managed to complete Basic Braining near the end of his stay, then it was back to the old grind. If nothing else, the vacation from his home was appreciated and Daniel found himself missing the atmosphere despite not knowing anyone well. The teachers, while he never spoke much with them either if he could help it, came from similar confused and frightened backgrounds, and it made listening to them easier. Even to those he found especially intimidating, like Instructor Faust. He was fourteen years old during his second visit. There were new and returning faces, both, and of the new were two girls named Kristel and Reese. Kristel was much more outgoing than the rest of the campers at the time and highly optimistic. Perhaps a bit pushy for his liking, but her positive attitude made it easier to accept. She helped him a lot with his paranormal training, the two often partnering up during lessons. Danny secured his Levitation and Marksmanship merit badges after some expected fumbling and, with Kristel's encouragement, sought out extra lessons with Instructor Faust to earn his Astral Projection merit badge. With their help, he finally gained control over it.
As Summer finished out, Danny and Chris didn't really know what to do about staying in contact. He wasn't sure how his parents would react to the knowledge that he'd made close enough friends with a girl at sleep away camp to want to exchange phone numbers, especially when they were in the midst of puberty. In an awkward frenzy, Daniel gifted the jigsaw necklace to her as a memento and Kristel offered a friendship bracelet she'd woven herself. They didn't see or hear from each other since and, over the next three years, Daniel never met anyone quite like her again. He missed the camp sorely but he was too old now and, any time it was brought up, his parents were quick to sweep that chapter of their lives under the rug. He was "better" now, no matter how many times he explained he hadn't been "cured". He knew he needed more training, but the thought didn't come to a head until stress became too much. Keeping up with his studies, societal pressures, his parents' lofty expectations about everything, it all crashed down around him in a telekinetic panic. He turned his room completely upside down, almost like a poltergeist was terrorizing him. By the time it was over he realized his mother was crying and screaming. He was urged to attend the academy and get a handle on himself. Daniel knew from the way they both looked at him, whispered about him, that he'd sealed the deal. He wasn't quite their son anymore, not in the same way, not in their minds. Though he was never close with them, or the rest of his family, he could tell they were distancing themselves.

AURA GREEN & ORANGE Daniel's aura clings close to his body, a full outline of his form that has a slight rippling effect at almost all times. Due to his high frequency, his aura's colors are dulled and there is an obvious noise effect, though thankfully it doesn't drown everything out. Despite the high frequency, his aura is active enough in its movements and he emotes well enough that it's fairly easy for any aura reader, skilled or not, to get a feel for his emotions.
