robot kitten Omg, robo, I'm so sorry I forgot about this. emotion_facepalm The sun was hot as it baked the dry splodge of greenery that lay at the foot of the mountains. Not a cloud was in the sky, and there was positively no shade to speak of. A steady wind rolled from the top of the peaks, cascading welcoming onto the little Kiandri Dovaa as he dutifully and carefully dug up the roots of a small yellow flower. He inspected it with a critical eye, then gently set the plant in his basket. Despite that it was the hottest part of the day, little Tohru was out collecting plants to cart back to his home closer to the shore, in hopes of building his own garden once more.
There was no telling if any of the plants and flowers he picked up here, near the mountains, would be successful in his own home, but it was worth a shot. Even if they didn't thrive, at least he'd learn a little something. And he could always pick up new plants from someplace else! As the young Dovaa glance down into his basket, he let out a pleased sigh. Today hadn't been such a bad day. No battles, no adventures, no yelling. Just a nice, quiet, relaxing day spent with the plants. He almost couldn't help but smile to himself.
With a satisfied nod, Tohru stood and wiped the sweat from his forehead. He dusted himself off, removed his gardening gloves and picked up his little basket. It would still be a long walk home, yet... The day wouldn't come soon enough when he could finally fly. Maybe he wouldn't get too far off the ground, but... at least travel would be quicker. For now, though, walking would do. Even if it was blindingly hot, and moving farther away from the mountains meant less of a cool breeze rolling off of them...
Perhaps he was getting too comfortable and feeling too safe. The young Dovaa wasn't even aware of a looming beast following behind him, just far enough out of range that he wouldn't be alerted by its shadow.

Toki was out flying about. He’d left his new arrical cub can two fae dragons at home to nap after strenuous playtime had been had by all three of his ‘clutch,’ as his clan was calling them. He was vastly amused that his clan was calling them that, and maybe they were. He was flying towards the mountains, mostly to go looking for other interesting creatures… and to hopefully observe some Arricals and see what they did... though how he was to do that without eyes he was a little worried about. As always, he had some stray sparks of magic out, scattering about in front and below to alert him to anything that passed near him. After a while he smelled something on the wind, dragon possibly… Not loath to try his hand at hunting again, Toki landed on the ground and sat to concentrate. He’d found, after much practice with his clan, that he could make his static field almost undetectable… at least it wouldn’t shock everything that walked into it! Took effort though. It was weaker and could only tell him outlines, not magic types or materials like it did when he put more power into it. He hummed softly to himself as he sent his power out into a large circle, flattening the normal sphere shape as much as he could so it would cover more ground. His tail flicked as he felt several things. One was small and had two legs, the other was larger with four legs and a tail if he was reading that right. Curious, he got up and walked closer until he could smell them on the wind and sense their inner power. Kiandri, both of them. One a dovaa the other a dragon, and the dovaa didn’t seem to notice he was being followed. Toki sighed and shook his head. Apparently this one hadn’t been taught to look around as the dragon wasn’t that far behind! He decided to wait and see what happened, he was close enough to help if needed, but this one needed to learn a lesson, and pain was sometimes a better teacher than words. words: 359/500

It wasn't until Tohru was well out of range of anything that could be used as cover that the dragon began to slink forward. It's claws made no sound as they dipped into the sand, and it held its wings close so the rustling wouldn't alert its two-legged prey. It seemed like every day it was getting harder to find a two-legged meal... The parents kept their young ones close at hand, and the adults were learning how to pick off dragons like nothing! But not this stupid little boy... He was a bit short and scrawny to be called a "meal," but he probably still had that sweet two-legged flesh. Mmm, it had been a while...
The little Dovaa remained blissfully unaware of his stalker, content as he was to rummage through his basket and look over all the beautiful plants he'd collected. He'd never encountered a dragon outside the Cave before, and certainly never when he was alone, so it hardly occurred to him that he should be on the lookout...
It wasn't until the sun was blotted out by a looming shadow, when he felt heated breath ghosting over his shoulder, when a rumbling that sounded of thunder reached his ears, when a tremor reverberated down his spine, that Tohru turned and glanced over his shoulder, golden orbs wide with new found fear. A heavy fore claw slammed into his torso, sending the young Dovaa flying stunned over the sand. The dragon pounced eagerly after him, its expression alight with the excitement of the hunt.

Toki sighed and buried his face into his clawed paw. This boy hadn't even noticed the dragon until it was right behind him! And was about to get attacked and eaten by the looks of it. A rather poor showing indeed. He strengthened his static field and condensed to one point. The surge of power cascaded over the Kiandri with a small rumble of crackling thunder and stunned it. He wasn't ale to kill with this ability but it was strong enough to stun. Grumbling he stalked over the hill and sat on the top to glare blindly down at the dovaa boy. "That was pitiful of you. Have you not been taught how to sense you are being followed?" He rumbled. "You should also move away from the Dragon. It is merely stunned.. unless you feel up to killing it?"He didn't really need to kill it. It was far from any Khehora territory, wasn't a threat to him, and he had no need for orbs anymore.

robot kitten I'mma count this stunned dragon as the one he loses against/runs from, if that's alright. XD The dragon landed over him, one arm resting on either side of his frame, though there was obviously plenty of room to spare. Tohru's chest hurt. There was sand in his eyes and hair, and he could barely see through the wild strands flapping in the wind. Not that he needed to. He hardly even wanted to if all he was going to see was teeth coming down on him. So Tohru tensed and waited. Just waited for the all-consuming blackness that would blot out even the sun.
But it... never came.
When he gathered the courage to open his eyes and brush the hair out of his face, all he saw was that dragon hovering over him, all sharp fangs and glares of annoyance. But even when Tohru flinched, it didn't dive at him again, just rumbled out a sound of annoyance from his predicament. The little Dovaa doubted he had a whole lot of time to spare. With a whine, he scooted his body out from beneath the beast, back peddling quickly across the sand like a terrified little crab before he slowly rose to his feet again. Never mind why the dragon hadn't killed him.
The foreign voice had him whirling to face the sound, only to see another drag-! Mm, well, it was a little small. But who was Tohru to judge? Pitiful. The word stung him. But it was unlikely that there would ever be a better word to identify him. He skittered a little farther from the dragon at the stranger's words, but came no closer to him in his movements. He slowly shook his head at the question. Questions. Two of them. To both of which the answer was 'no.'

Once he heard the Dovaa move away from the Dragon without killing it, he walked forward to place himself between the two. If the Dragon did attack, Toki would protect the boy.. who apparently was either really weak, timid or too young to know much.. though the scent told him that it wasn't too young of a dovaa.... Toki released his magic on the dragon and waited to see what it'd do. He snorted as it slunk away after assessing him, it was young but not too stupid apparently. "Speak up boy," He said. "I cannot see you so if you have an answer to my questions you'll have to say it out loud." Though he probably shook his head, Toki thought. "And do you have a name or shall I keep calling you boy?"

Tohru gulped as even the dragon slunk away from the approaching stranger. He'd never heard of a dragon turning tail and running before, so surely whatever could make it do that was very powerful and awe inspiring. He'd been able to paralyze even a Kiandri with electricity, so that was also pretty impressive...
Impressive enough that Tohru didn't want to mess with it, that's for sure.
But the smaller dragon-shape moved nearer despite the Dovaa's wishes. It planted itself between where Tohru stood and where the dragon had departed, putting it frustratingly close to where the boy stood. But he didn't dare turn his back on it. If it could scare off a dragon, it wouldn't have any trouble taking down a fleeing little Dovaa. Even if it was... blind? "Tohru." He squeaked out pitifully.

“So you do speak.” He said. This one was obviously a very shy child. Perhaps I should tone it back a bit, he thought. Scaring him anymore won’t do any good... His teaching side was urging him to try and deal with the boy, maybe help him get a back bone a bit… He turned around and walked towards the boy before sitting down near him and wrapping his tail about his feet. “The desert is no place to go wandering and not pay attention, Tohru. You need to start looking around and noticing anything that shouldn’t be there. Especially shadows. If not.” He shrugged and sighed. “If not then you either die or get hurt. And being hurt in the desert with no shelter nearby can lead to death.” Okay, so scare him to a point, anyways. Enough so he started looking around and seeing danger before it struck. No to address something that needed addressing: You are a Kiandri. When it leaped at you, why did you not use your magic? it is practically meant for fighting! Just lying there and waiting for death is no good. He had sensed nothing, ABSOLUTELY NO MAGIC, from the boy as the dragon had leaped. He had the power in him, quite a bit in fact. So why had he not used it?

robot kitten In my next post, that dragon that Toki scared off will come back with a few friends. ;D Just a heads up! As the thing lumbered closer, Tohru realized that it wasn't a petite dragon, but a Khehora, like Cadeo. Also like Cadeo, it didn't dive at him for being too close... Nonetheless, as it sat in the sand, coiling its tail about its feet, the little Dovaa only watched wearily. When it showed no further signs of movement, his golden gaze dipped down to observe the sand. If it was up to him, he wouldn't be in this desert... All this hot, dry air wasn't good for his garden! He had to go very far out of the way to collect plants, and he dared not ask his busy brother to accompany him. He nodded slowly at the Khehora's words. He was alone and untrained, but he wasn't stupid. He knew full well what could happen to him out here.
But as the other Kiandri (it had used electric magic. Surely it knew a thing or two about it) questioned Tohru's, erm... fighting style, the Dovaa's orbs snapped up to him quickly before looking down again. "I-I... can't." He whispered softly, his fingers finding their way down to bunch in the fabric of his shirt. How ridiculous did he sound, telling this Khehora that he couldn't use magic?

Toki raised and eyebrow. "Can't? As in you physically cannot summon any magic? Or you've never really tried? I can sense magic in you, you do have it..." Toki was a little flabbergasted. Cannot use magic? What dovaa couldn't use the magic of the clan they chose? Thinking about it though, Toki thought that perhaps this one was too timid, and timidity would not enable anyone to control lightning of all things. That needed a strong will. Perhaps he's just too weak and hasn't got any confidence so the magic won't listen... "Have you tried being firm and demanding of the magic when you try to summon it? Call it with confidence and act like you are in control of it? Or do you pathetically just hold out your hand and hope it comes?" That was a bit unfair of me, he thought, but this one seems very shy... maybe if I can get him angry he'll react...

Tohru's shoulders sagged, and his golden orbs fell to the sand that swirled around the Khehora's feet. "That's... not it..." He admitted quietly. He supposed he did have the physical ability to call the lightning forth, if he needed to, particularly when he felt threatened beyond the normal point of things. But it did have a way of making him pay for it. He rubbed his arm, where he could imagine its bite against his skin. "I don't want it." He mumbled. "I have no use for it. It's... a worthless magic..." Probably not the best thing to say to someone born into it, but, well. it was what it was. His gaze flicked up to Toki's face briefly, before falling again. "Please excuse me..." He whispered as he moved to step around the bigger Khehora with only minor hesitation.
He didn't make it more than a few steps before a painfully obvious shadow appeared across the sand. Tohru paused, half afraid to look up. It could just be the Khehora heading off, for all he knew. But it didn't really sound like that... The shadow loomed closer, and the little Dovaa mustered the will to tilt his head up toward the sky. The first thing he recognized was the pale yellow glint of the young dragon the Khehora had scared off not long ago. And it was followed by... others. The sky may as well have been filled with dragons for all Tohru could make out of the tangle of flapping wings and rumbling bodies. With a quiet gasp of alarm, his gaze darted to find the Khehora once more. It seemed unlikely that he'd be able to growl and scare off a whole family.

Fluffesu I'll kill one here and let you deal with the rest! Don't want it? Worthless? Toki was appalled and angered. "If you didn't want it then why did you choose the clan!?" He growled. "And do not say my clan is worthless, small pathetic one! If you want worthless, go look in a mirror! The only thing worthless is one who refuses to try! One who whines and complains when the magic doesn't respond the way they want it too!" He turned and lashed his tail as he sensed the Dragons coming back. "I will show and then pound into you HOW to use your powers... I will teach you.. and you will face these dragons here and now. No fleeing otherwise I will toss you back into the fight. He changed to his Khehorian form and reached out to grab Torhu's arm with his clawed hands. "You will face these.. or die trying, weak child. You will leave here with more knowledge and maybe not such a worthless outlook. Or you will not leave here at all." He hissed in a deep angry voice. There was but one way to deal with children like this; pound them to the breaking point, then they shattered or got stronger. The desert and lightning had no place for those who broke. One must be made to learn if they were to survive. This was not one of his clan no... but he had just insulted Toki's sensibilities and now he would be pounded. Then, if he survived, he would learn and see that his way of thinking was incorrect and hopefully come to respect his power.. If not... Well, the world had enough whiners and weaklings that the loss of one would not matter. Toki pushed Tohru out in front on him towards the dragons. "Watch, and learn weakling. And maybe you will survive." He stretched out a claw and lightning began to spark and writhe along his scales. "You must be firm and demanding when you reach inside of you for your power. It helps to imagine it as a storm inside of you that you must tame." The lightning gathered in his palms. "Force the power into a shape in your mind. Then.. let it go." He made a tossing motion and the ball flashed out, crackling with thunder as it leaped across the space towards the nearest dragon.

It probably was one of the bolder things he'd ever said in his young life. As such, he was foolish to think he could just return to his business without any consequences. Especially with something as volatile as a feral Kiandri Khehora would be. And it certainly had the temper Tohru would expect of most of those from his clan... Dragons or no, he tipped his pathetic, worthless, whiny face down and murmured, "I'm sorry..." And like every other time he'd uttered those simple, supposedly calming words, he was granted no reprieve. The little Dovaa wasn't sure who had told him an apology could fix anything, but whoever it was, he was a liar. Of course at this point, it seemed like anything he said would be of no use to quell the torturous Khehora.
Tohru whimpered softly as a scaly hand wrapped around his arm, and he was yanked unwillingly forward to face the four beasts that had come seeking vengeance for their friend. He watched as the magic leaped so agreeably from the Khehora's hands, bending and coiling at his will before jumping to attack the nearest dragon. As it reared back in alarm and pain, it crashed into to of its companions, forcing them a few feet away as well, before the dragon the Khehora attacked dissolved into a set of orbs.
The three remaining beasts collected themselves, and Tohru spared a glance behind to see what the Khehorian was thinking. Thinking of watching him die is what it sounded like. The nearest dragon rumbled, and Tohru looked down at his hands. Something about molding a storm cloud.
The dragon dove forward with teeth and claws bared, and the young Dovaa staggered backwards, tripping over loose sand, until he'd fallen onto his back. If he didn't use his magic, this Khehora was just going to watch him die. 'I can't.' His earlier words echoed back to him. Can't without getting hurt, anyway. If his only choices were death or pain, he supposed he should... at least try to go with the latter. Whatever twisted coil of magic dwelled within him practically chirped at the thought, clawing at him in its delight for freedom after what could have been forever.
Tohru raised his hands as the dragon landed over him. He always felt like... he was little more than a vessel for his magic. It had a mind and emotions of its own, it just lacked a physical body. And it was annoyed when Tohru tried to keep it from venturing out, so it lashed out at him when it got the chance. But it couldn't let him die, or it wouldn't have anywhere to go...
And no was no different.
When the dragons attacked, it leaped out in his defense, being sure to give him an extra lick or two as punishment, despite how Tohru tried to think of wrangling storm clouds. He supposed he just wasn't convicted enough to try and hang onto something that wasn't even tangible. When the dragons disintegrated, the magic coiled away, and Tohru could almost imagine that it was pleased with itself. Even if it left him tense and trembling as he sat in the sand, waiting for the residual sparks to disperse.
