He wasn't sure what he had expected from that meeting, but he'd gotten it, that was for sure. Except there was something strange, something that was still ringing in Gale's ears as Jake passed him, a scowl on the other man's face that Gale recognized.

He pushed himself up and followed Jake out of the room, his booted feet cicking on the tile floor.

"What's that supposed to mean?" he asked; and it was not said in an angry tone of voice, merely a wary one, Gale shoving his hands into the pockets of his pants. "You think I'm going to just go out and do something to get myself killed?"

"You're already trying."
Jake turned around, still frowning.
"Why'd you have to go and volunteer?

He hasn't expected Gale to follow him, much less question what he had meant, but he didn't understand. Why stick out for someone who had clearly gotten himself into that situation in that first place? Did he expect charity? A reward? A pat on the back for being so selfless? He didn't know what connection Gale had with that man, but to be willing to handicap himself to such an extent and even risk death? He just didn't understand.

Gale's expression shifted slightly, less one of curiosity and more one of mild annoyance now. He wasn't sure what he had expected Jake to say, but whatever the case, they were here now, and Gale was going to try and weasel the truth out of him.

"I am not," he said, "trying to kill myself. That's ridiculous."

The bracelet felt heavy on his arm. Gale tried not to think about it and instead gave Jake a look, his eyes flickering. "Why not?" he said flatly. "What else is there to be gained just by sitting and watching Caelius do what he does best? It's either speak up and do something or sit back and watch the world around you burn."

The world around him was already burning, but Gale was hardly about to point that out.

"Are you now?"
Jake returned his look, clearly not impressed with his answer.
"And what WILL change if you decided to do something about it? You already saw what happened. Did you think he'd take pity on you or something? You should know better than me that man is nothing but ruthless."

He took a deep breath, and closed his eyes, realizing he was letting his emotions get the better of him. No, Gale was right. Even Caelius had told him as much, hadn't he? Those who did nothing and just expected things to come to them? They were nothing but useless. And he was acting the very same way.

"...sorry. I guess... I'm jut a little on edge right now."
Another reason could be he actually CARED about Gale, which... he wasn't going to openly admit.

His scowl grew a little more pronounced, half because Jake was exasperating, and half because Jake was, unfortunately, more right than he realized. Gale had already learned from experience that Caelius did not show pity (in fact, Gale was beginning to think that Caelius didn't even feel any emotions other than Chowderhead-ery), and here he was, flinging himself into the line of fire again.

Theoretically speaking (he hoped). Gale ground his teeth together, but Jake had backed down a little, looking a little irked at himself, and Gale sighed, a long breath escaping his throat.

"That makes two of us," he muttered darkly, and then added, in a more subdued tone of voice, "There isn't that much that I can do anymore, really."

It was a feeling he could testify to. Even as hunters, what COULD they do? Defying Caelius basically shortened one's lifespan significantly, and following his orders usually had some other sort of dire consequence, which may or may not have involved losing the trust of other hunters.

He sighed, scratching his head.
"Well, at least if that guy apologizes, that's one problem solved."
One among many others, but it was a start.

"... By the way, can I ask you a question?"

Gale seriously doubted Taym would ever apologize, but he let that slide, instead letting out his breath in a long sigh. Reaching up a hand, he rubbed the back of his neck and then twisted his head around to look back at Jake, his gaze only mildly suspicious.

"Yes," he said, a little warily. "What's up?"

Jake frowned, wondering why Gale was being so cautious around him, but... he couldn't really blame him. He was the one that riled him up in the first place.

"During that meeting... that pink-haired hunter mentioned something about these red fragments that those Ouroboros hunters were collecting. What are they? And why are they collecting them?"
