Dae'Ruil couldn't take the smile from his face if he wanted to. They were both emotionally exhausted after they had been through together, and yet, Dae'Ruil could not sleep. She was there, with him, nestled by his side as they lay together under the stars. He watched her as she drew one peaceful breath after another, her side rising and falling, the soft feathers of her wings brushing against his flank.
They had settled down together after their conversation, after Dae'Ruil's revelation of his family history. Neither knew what step to take next. Her "quest" had been completed - not what she had wanted to learn, perhaps, but she had found her father. The foals she had had with the wanderer were grown and gone. And she had rescued him from the foul witch. Their future together, just each other, was wide open. And for a while, that great unknown was intimidating.
But as he lay and watched her sleep, the answer seemed like it could not be more obvious. All of the stories of chivalry and romance... he knew what he had here... his one true love. Despite the hurdles and pits they had fallen into along the way. It just made it all the stronger that it had been tested. And well, there was one proper way to go about matters of the heart.
The scenario played in his mind as she slept, he dared not wake her she looked so peaceful. Only finally, when the warm first light of dawn played over her id he finally nuzzle her softly against her cheek. The clouds stretched like fingers across the sky and were bathed in tones of orange, pink, and violet. It was beautiful. Perfect. Just like her.

Fianna slowly stirred, muscles tensing and wings stretching as she began to pull herself from her slumber. She yawned widely, unladylike - not that Fianna cared, and smacked her lips with a lazy smile as her eyes blinked open and Dae'Ruil was the first thing that greeted her.
His eyes were open, and while he was still kneeling on the ground by her side, he was more perched, like he was crouching.
She cocked her head, "How long have you been awake?" She asked with a bemused laugh. "You could have woken me."

Dae'Ruil shook his head resolutely at her suggestion of waking her up. "No, my lady, surely I could not do such a thing. To disturb your slumber... when you seemed so at peace. You deserved the respite that you had found."
His heart fluttered in his chest, and he was reminded of the day that they had met: he had been so nervous then, too, when he was faced with such a beautiful, yet wild-hearted, spirited and confident mare. She had been everything he wanted to be. And still, she was everything he ever wanted to this day.
Surely, she must hear the pounding of his heart as he struggled to find the words.

Dae'Ruil remained knelt on the ground as she got to her hooves and stretched her wings towards the sky with another yawn and a bemused look back at him with a shake of her head. Still so formal. But yet, she found it so charming. And now that she knew who, or rather what he was, it made her feel a little uncomfortable. This wasn't some grandiose pretense, but he was a real prince. She didn't deserve a prince.
"You could have woken me," She repeated, feeling ashamed to still be the object of such flattery.
"I'm sorry... I meant to be thinking of your offer last night... I just... I guess I fell asleep. It's just such a big decision... where to set off to next..." She tried to summon the energy she had as a young filly, but even though she had helped free him from the witch's grasp, she felt like she was damaged goods next to him now.

"Think nothing of it, my Lady Fianna." He spoke smoothly. "The night helped ease your thoughts and brought you rest. But in truth, I believe it brought me a solution to our quandry..." He shifted a bit, but remained kneeling before her.
"IF... of course, you agree."
Tha-thump. Tha-thump. Tha-Thump.
"My Lady Fianna-" He began again as he saw her open her mouth to speak again, "You have been my companion, my confidence, and in truth, my hero. Your spirit has been a shining example to me, and even the trials that have put us to the test has not broken it. It has been so strong that I even dare say it has imbued me with some of that confidence that I myself lacked. A confidence that had I not gained, I fear I would never have had the mettle to say what it is I should have said many years ago."
He saw her eyebrows draw together in concern. A flash of worry. He musn't let her fret, musn't let her wait.
"Fianna," He spoke, dropping the pretense for once in exchange for a familiar tone, "I adore you, and I admire you. I wish to spend the rest of our lives together. It would do me no greater honor than to ask for your hoof, my lady."

At first, fear gripped Fianna's heart. That little voice of doubt that had been creeping and building in her psyche since she found her real father, and who gained strength after the handsome, wandering stallion left her heavy with foals whispered to her. Maybe he, too, was leaving her. Remembered his royal blood and saw her as a wild mare that was not fit to be with him. Even though he was under some enchantment when Drusevere had him, the way he had looked at her, the words he used still crept into her dreams some nights.
But no... Fianna's breath caught in her throat. Surely he wasn't. No... surely... but then he said it. A proposal. Her heart swelled in her chest and her cheeks felt moist. And it felt as if a dagger forged from the stallion's words were driven into the monster of doubt that had been growing in her mind. And, Fianna realized, that doubt all along had been built from a love of her handsome, courtly companion that she never had given voice to herself. That that doubt was because she thought she was no longer 'good enough'. That he was staying with her out of a sense of duty or obligation... following a promise but not his heart. Why had she doubted herself? Why had she let this doubt grow in her because of a stallion to begin with? He loved her for who she was - flaws and all. And she should embrace that within herself as well without a second thought. Her experiences had made her stronger. And there was confidence to gain from them - not lose.
She looked back and forth. wiping at her cheek self-consciously with a wing, and hiding an incredulous smile.
She looked to the morning skies. They were nowhere. Not either of their homes, not even the meadows they had raised her sons in. And yet... maybe that made it perfect. They didn't need to be anywhere, as long as they were together. It was beautiful... and right now, probably the most beautiful sunrise Fianna had ever seen.
Finally, she turned back to Daeruil, and he caught a glimpse of the flustery, yet confident mare he had met years ago.
"Of course.... Of course I will, Dae." She laughed, overjoyed.
Her smirking smile was back on her face, as her confidence righted itself and grew, and she added: "I'll still have you... even if you ARE a prince." She kidded. In the mires of her depression, she might have asked him if he even still wanted her. Now, now she knew better. Fianna was back.

Dae'Ruil was on his feet in a flash, an overjoyed smile on his face as he nuzzled her face.
"My lady, it fills my heart to the brim with joy to hear you say that." He said with not a drop of sarcasm.
"I do not have much with me beyond what I left my home with, but please, allow me to present to you this favor, with the promise that I will happily spend my days finding you something that lives up to your beauty and spirit.
He withdrew one of the wrapped feathers from his jewelry and placed it in Fianna's mane. Traditionally, in his kingdom, it was customary for a ring to be given - made by craftsmen - that settled on the horn of a fluttercorn. But Fianna wasn't a fluttercorn... and Dae'Ruil wouldn't think to bring that up.

"No, Dae. Please, this is more than enough." She insisted.
"Do not waste time on trinkets for my sake." She grinned, "Besides, something too nice and I might lose it flying or something."
She glanced at the blue-tipped white feather out of the corner of her eye, tossing her mane a little. "This is beautiful. Thank you. I couldn't think of something better - because it reminds me of you."

"I will hear no protest." Dae'Ruil insisted with a smile.
"Well... now is just the matter of meeting with your mother." He said matter-of-factly. "I ... may have done this a bit out of order, I am afraid. I should have asked their permission first. But forgive me for breaking a bit of custom. I know there are many miles to the journey, and I could not bear to wait to at least ask you." Besides, he wanted to make absolutely certain she would still have him.
It was strange to Dae'Ruil not to be able to ask her father's permission. That was the true custom, but he knew better than to bring up her father.

"Dae, you don't have to ask my mother's permission," Fianna said with an eyeroll. "I can make my own decisions, and I already HAVE. I don't care what mom thinks."
"Not that I think she'd have any kind of problem with you." She added quickly. Not that her mother was even one to judge. What was she thinking with Ethan?

"No matter, my lady, I would not be a man of honor were I not to present my intentions to my lady's mother before I take her hoof in marriage."
He stood up straight. "You have spoken of your homelands, and I wish to see them. Your mother, your sisters. I would be remiss to keep you from them if there is any thought in your mind to see them. We do not need to decide whether or not to go to my birthland until after that."

Truth be told, Fianna was a little relieved to have the decision made. It had been weighing heavily on her shoulders since Dae'Ruil asked her the day before. And, she was happy with it... the more she thought about it, the more she missed her sisters. She worried about them. Her mother, too. And yet, she felt like she would have been selfish to ask to visit home in light of what Dae'Ruil had told her.
Now, they had an excuse. A very good one. And the door was not shut on Dae's... kingdom. Well, not his per se... but still. And it was not a decision she had to make yet.
She nuzzled him again. "Fiiiine." She said with a whickering laugh and a sparkle in her eyes. "But.... not today. Today... I want to just be with you and enjoy this beautiful day. Tomorrow.... Tomorrow we'll start our new quest."
