The sun, though still high in the sky, was beginning to set. Shadows were ever growing larger and before too long would consume the world that Aditi knew. She continued to graze for a few moments more, taking advantage of the rare trip to the open plain near the forests edge while she could. The forest was home for her - it had everything that she could ever desire. It had green leaves to eat; berries, fruit and flowers as treats; springs and pools to drink from and bathe in; and above all it had shelter. And at that very moment it was the shelter that Aditi longed for most. Of course the planes were delightful to be in; there were not any obstacles to maneuver around when running, there was plenty of sunshine, and there was an endless buffet of fresh and supple green grass. But... A predator could also easily catch a meal under such conditions. There weren't any branches to hinder the flying sort from swooping in unannounced and attacking. No obstacles or barriers to keep the land sort at bay while fleeing. Even more-so - there wasn't any place to hide. No, the forest was and would always be her home.
And it was time to return to it. She raised her head and flicked her ears, listening to the world around her as she turned her gaze to her daughter. She pursed her lips and furrowed her brow as she eyed the mare that lingered a few yards away worriedly. During their journey to this place Sharmila had traveled ahead of her as she always did to ensure safe passage. For the life of her Aditi could not understand what it was that she had done to receive such a blessing in disguise. The young mare, despite everything Aditi had put her through as a filly, had grown into such a lovely young mare with a heart of gold. Or, at least, that was how Aditi saw her. Today had been different than usual though. Aditi, while traveling, had actually managed to catch up to her daughter, and when she had seen her Shar seemed morose. Aditi hadn't bothered to question her daughter; how could she? It was difficult for Aditi at times to converse with Sharmila, especially on matters that were complicated. It was in those instances that she wished she knew the tongue of the soquili and what the sounds meant that came from their mouths. She assumed, then, that she could offer her daughter the comfort and aid that Shar so often showed her. Even now Shar seemed a bit down. Aditi nickered to her daughter, flicking her tail casually and stretching her neck towards her, scenting the air. She seemed physically okay, but Aditi knew better.
Sharmila gazed out over the wide open field, lost in her own thoughts as she slowly and casually chewed her meal. It was a rare occasion that she was able to gaze on such a vast area without there being any trees blocking the landscape from view. She appreciated the beauty of it and the lack of confinement, but she could never imagine herself freely wandering such a vast and open area all on her own. How did those that lived in this area survive? Where did they rest? How did they know which way it was that they were traveling? These were all questions she had pondered many times over and many times again - She supposed that she would never truly know the answer though and left it at that. Typically she relished this opportunity and would take advantage of it, running and frolicking as a filly would, stretching her legs and running off her excess energy. Today, though... Today she couldn't stop thinking of the events of earlier.
She knew it was not her place - there was so little she knew about the mare. She was not family. She had met her only twice, including today. But... Shar's stomach felt as though it was tied in a knot the size of a buffalo. She felt a great sadness for the predicament of the mare, and understood fully what it was like to be fearful. There weren't many disadvantages to it; fear and caution could keep one safe, it could keep one healthy, and most of all it could keep one alive. To say that she was not fearful and cautious would be a lie. She tried her best to remain alert and aware of her surroundings; she made sure she always knew where there was shelter; she made sure to know where there were safe places to eat and drink. But she had never been alone. Being fearful and alone, she could see how miserable that could be. Though her mother was not one to speak with she at least was company. Shar knew that if ever she needed aid that her mother would help her. But Cenotaph.... Sharmila swallowed her mouthful and frowned, looking to the ground and restlessly maneuvered the blades of grass before her with her cloven hoof. Sharmila couldn't even imagine how horrible and frightening it could be to be alone. She, from the moment she had seen Cenotaph's predicament, had wanted to comfort and help her; but.... how?
Shar's head snapped around instantly when she herd a nicker, relaxing only when she saw that it was her mother. She silently scolded herself for having let her guard down - she should have realized instantly that it was her mother simply from the sound. She tilted her head slightly as she watched Aditi's actions. Giving a soft sigh she shook her head - her mother was concerned. She trotted over to the blue mare with her wolf-like tail lightly swaying side to side, offering her a soft smile and a touching her forehead with her nose gently. "I am alright...." She whispered, knowing that though she spoke the words it would be her actions that her mother would understand.
Aditi frowned a little - Sharmila could pretend to be okay but she knew differently. She nipped Shar's ear affectionately anyways though, knowing that if her daughter wouldn't show her what it was that was bothering her all she could do was be there and comfort her. There were just some things in life that one couldn't change, and this must be one of those things. She nosed her daughter with a bit of force, looking eagerly towards the treeline and then apprehensively to the sky. She snorted and shifted her hooves in place before turning back and nudging Sharmila once more. It was time to leave.
Shar nodded and trotted off towards the tree line. She paused as she reached the trunk of the first tree and turned to look back, taking in the sight of the open field one last time and making sure that her mother wasn't too far behind. Once certain her mother was following Shar set off into the woods, fully alert as she scouted out the safest path returning to their home deep within the trees.

Hadriel glanced off to the pathway that lead in and out of the family's home. Most other horses would think that it's a bit large, even with 7 kids... His mother and father were currently away and he was keeping an eye on everyone, especially his youngest sister Centotaph. The mare had been struggling more then the others with her life, she was so very skittish. She must have inherited their mothers more timid side in full bloom.
He gave a raspy exhale and decided to go out looking for her. She usually wasn't gone this long and so he grew worried that she might have gotten to scared to find her way home. Her ears twitched as the unit for his mask dragged between his legs. The steam that came from his flesh was pulled by the breeze of him walker and his muscles ached. Hopefully Cenotaph hadn't gotten herself into trouble.
Hadriel's dilated eyes glanced around looking for her. Sure he got funny looks like some of his other siblings, he inherited his fathers bad health that came from those chemicals. But he was probably better balanced then most of the others mentally. And he hated seeing others picking on his siblings. The large stallion began to walk with more purpose. Had anyone cornered his sister he knew exactly how to handle them!

Cenotaph hurried frantically toward the home of her parents. There, she knew Had could help her. He would stand up to those awful creatures living in her home, and they would go away and she could live normally again. A flash of black quickly made its way to the mare's mane, where it perched between two of her horns. Baaaaaaaaaaaaaad ideeeeeeeeeeeaaa, it suggested. They'll knoooooooow. They'll get youuuuuuuuuu. The whispers caused the mare to stop and let out a panicked shriek. "No, they won't! Had will come, and he'll get them to go away! He wouldn't let them get me!" She continued to push on, the thick, smog-like substance she was used to pouring out of the tears in her flesh more than usual. A cackle erupted from the tiny ghoul. But what if you're wroooooooooooong?
Tears began to run down her face as the mutant continued on. Her tormentor made its way through her hair, ripping out clusters which caused yelps of pain. "Stop! Stop it!" Obviously pleased with itself, the spirit made its way to her spine and shook at the fence. They'll fiiiiiiiiiind you, it taunted. They'll geeeeeeeet you. Cenotaph's sobs became uncontrollable. Big brother can't save you this time, b***h! Without notice, the creature disappeared and the mare momentarily felt relieved. However, she was still frozen with fear and her sobs only turned to screams. What if he was right? What if they knew what she was trying to do and they watching? She shook in the darkening forest, crying and wishing everything could just be okay for once.

The shadows that ebbed forth from every little thing were growing with every moment that passed. It did not bother Sharmila though as she ambled onwards; she knew that they would be able to reach home before the last of the golden rays of sunshine were no longer able to reach through the tangled canopy of branches above, they had left with enough time to spare. She continued on, looking and listening to her surroundings. Then, without warning, she froze.
She flicked her ears every which way, listening to the sounds ahead of her. She began to lower her head, painfully slow, as if to graze with her eyes never leaving her surroundings before her. Just as Shar's head was dipping below her chest she jerked it straight up. She looked about, stomping her hooves in an attempt to flush out whoever or whatever it was in front of them that was making such hurried sounds. She knew that by now her mother behind her would have hidden herself well and would be waiting for the signal that all was alright, but the signal never came. The faint echoes of a voice managed to reach Sharmila's ears and she knew instantly what was ahead of her. "Cenotaph..." Sharmila whispered before bolting in the direction the mare's voice had come from. She didnt think of the possibilities nor the dangers accompanied with such an action, she simply ran, straight towards Cenotaph's distressed cries.
Aditi peeked out from her shelter, her eyes never leaving her daughters form as she listened to what it was that had made her daughter pause. Something was moving hurriedly ahead of them, though Aditi could not tell what it was. Then when the sounds of, what Aditi assumed was the soquili tongue, reached them she tilted her head slightly; she was still waiting for the signal to come out of hiding. She jumped in fear a little as her daughter suddenly bolted, and instinctively she followed immediately. Being quicker and more agile than her daughter, with her smaller physique and years of fleeing and bounding, and was on Sharmila's heels with only a few paces. She was terrified and confused, and grunted to her daughter for her to stop. Fleeing was exactly that - running away from and hiding from whatever it was that caused you to flee to begin with, not Towards it. The cries, the shouts, the screams, all that was ahead of them gave no indication of safety. They werent even heading in the right direction anymore; they were heading away from home! Aditi nipped at the wolf like tail in front of her and barked a her daughter, wanting her to stop. She didnt understand at all what was happening. Finally, no longer to will herself to go any further she came to ha halt, her hooves digging into the soft ground and sliding a bit as she did so. She whinnied (one of the few soquili sounds she consciously knew how to make) pleadingly after her daughter for her to return to her, for her to come with her and for them to go to safety.
But... The green figure she had been following so closely had already disappeared. She paced side to side, lost on what to do. After a brief moment she paused. She pursed her lips and tears began to well in her eyes - she had abandoned her daughter once more. She had not been faced with such a conflicting and difficult decision since the day her daughter had been born. Her daughter had always been there for her. If Sharmila felt so strongly about what it was that she was doing that she would throw caution to the wind the least Aditi could do was stand by her and support her in any way that she could. With new determination Aditi set out after her daughter.
Sharmila ran as swiftly as her hooves would carry her towards the increasingly distressed sounds of Cenotaph. Sharmila was afraid. She feared that the mare was hurt, she feared that the mare was in danger, she feared that the mare needed help - And she feared that there was no one there for Cenotaph. It didnt matter who or what you were, everything needed someone or something else to be there for them. It was only when the olive hue of Cenotaph's pelt flickered in Shar's sight through the trees that Shar slowed her pace. She went from a full out gallop to a mere creep in seconds. Her breaths were loud and heavy as she attempted to catch them. Slowly she made her way forward through the few remaining trees between her and Cenotaph. Shar's ears pinned back and she frowned, Cenotaph's sobs and screams making her want to do anything to make them stop. "Cen.... Cenotaph?" Shar said quietly as she came around the last tree, her head held low as she peeked about for any danger. The mare was shaking she was so upset - Shar didnt want to frighten or upset her further. "What can I do?" She whispered; a question not only for herself, but for Cen too.

As Hadriel stormed through the forest, his heavy hooves thudding the ground. He had gone a few miles from his parents homestead and his sister wasn't anywhere to be seen. This was her usual roaming area, her little hide hole wasn't to far either. There were a few different paths...
The stallions ears folded back and he snarled hearing the screams. His eyes widened with angry as he took off toward them. He was to late, someone was already harming her. He bolted to her, cutting off the path, his mask unit dragging and getting stuck pulling at the mask on his face before she tossed his head wildly, the cord swinging up to hang from around his neck.
When he had finally reached his sister there were two others there, two smaller mares. One was standing near his shrieking sister. The large stallion's muscles burnt from the excursion and his skin burned.
"Get away from her!" He roared, his voice rasping and deep. Due to the contamination it he had trouble speaking... Yelling would cause problems, but he didn't care. His sister was more important then ever being able to speak again. As he panted, smoke escaped from the sides of his mask and charged up separating the other mares from his sister.
His wild looking eyes turned quickly to his sister, they turned suddenly to caring and concerned. "Ceno... Ceno I'm here." His spoke softly with his raspy voice. "I'm always here for you. I'll make sure they never hurt you again." The stallion pushed his nose into the side of his sisters. His radiating eyes locking onto her.

The mare's ears laid flat at the sound of the others. She trembled, not daring to look. "Sh....Shar...?" Cenotaph truly hoped it was the kind-hearted mare from earlier. If it weren't, who knows what could happen. The ghoul saw its opportunity and took it. Seeeeeeee? They fooooooound you. It cackled and seemingly paced in the graveyard. What noooooow? Luminescent orbs began to water again as she confronted the spirit. "Stop it! Just go away!"
Her heart jumped when she heard a rather familiar rasping voice and she nearly collapsed with relief. She leaned into the stallion for comfort. "They... They didn't hurt me, Haddy. It was just... He said they were going to find me. And then he said they'd hurt me... And I got scared." The shadowy menace seemed to retreat at the bulging stallion, making its way into a seeping crevice on the mare's leg. She winced as its form moved beneath her skin, no more than a moving bulge along her body.
After she calmed herself, she looked at the other two mares. "S... Sorry... I'm sure he didn't mean to yell..."
