56 - Encounter (283 words)

For the longest time ever, Yves' life had always revolved around his family and clan and no other. All that was about to change today when he accompanied his father on a trek to visit one of his friends who belonged to the Death clan. He didn't quite see why there was a need for an alliance or friendship with those from another clan. The War clan was self sufficient as it was at the moment and there pretty much wasn't anything that they couldn't already accomplish on their own.

His father had insisted on him coming even though he questioned the need for him to be there, citing that there were individuals whom he wanted him to meet hence why he absolutely had to be present. Well the least he could do, he supposed, was to plaster on a small and polite smile as he sat through the initial exchange of pleasantries before he started wandering off on his own.

It was in the garden that he happened to chance upon her - a young mare about his age tending to a tiny plot of pink flowers that were about the shade of the streaks that ran in her hair. Watching her work from afar, he couldn't help but smile as she reminded him of his own sister. It was at that moment when she looked up from her work and spotted him staring at her. For the briefest of moments, slate blues met emeralds before he quickly averted his gaze, bowing slightly as he beat a hasty retreat whence he came from with his cheeks burning as if they had been scalded by the fires from the very depths of Hell.

52 - Equals (215 words)

It was a fluke. It had to be one unless his father was going easy on him back there when he ought to be giving his all. Pulling back his kodachi to return it to its sheath, Yves backed up a little and stretched out his other hand to help his father up. Still somewhat shell-shocked by the outcome of the sparring session, he played back the blows they had traded in his mind, finding absolutely nothing that would point to the possibility of his father holding back thereby resulting in his eventual win over him.

Could it be...

He felt a familiar presence press on his head, his mind registering it to be none other than his father's hand before the affectionate ruffling of his hair that followed. "It seems to me that we are equals now. I'm proud of you but don't let that get into your head. You still have a long road ahead of you if you intend to pursue the path of an Executioner Yves."

He merely smiled. While the feeling of having possibly surpassed his father was surreal at the moment, victory was undeniably his and he could at least take heart in that whilst he continued honing his skills in preparation of the Executioner trials ahead of him.

19 - Trust (386 words)

"When the time comes for you to choose your mate, what type of mare will you go for Brother?"

Truth be told, Yves had never really given much thought to something that far into the future and as abstract as that until his sister came to pose the question to him one day. In all honesty, his socialising skills were practically non-existential unless he knew the individual whom he was trying to interact with prior. That was part of the reason why he felt that the role of an Executioner would suit him best in the long run since he would have to answer to no one else but him alone.

He had tried to worm his way out of giving Mio a proper answer on the pretext of him possibly not even living to see that day given the tasks he had to accomplish as an Executioner. That had earned him a disapproving frown and a light smack on his arm before she insistently posed the question back to him again. He sighed, knowing from experience that there would be no reprieve for him till she got what she wanted whenever she was like that. It was almost as if she was conspiring to find him a suitable mate based on his answer to this alone.

"... I guess it'll have to be someone whom I can trust. Someone who'll treat you, my sister, as good as she does her own family." He had reluctantly offered after thinking long and hard on it in the end, hoping that that was a good enough answer for her. He really didn't care as to who he ended up with or whether he would be with anyone at all in the end. He was good to go so long as his family whom he cared deeply about was safe and free from worries back at home.

"What about... Kasja? She's nice and you seem to really trust her. You should see the way she looks at you at times..." His eyes had went wide at her seemingly out of the blue proposition, his entire disposition flustered as he quickly dismissed the notion with a snort while mumbling that that's because she's like a younger sister to him and therefore family by default so that's a different situation altogether.

4 - Revenge (307 words)

For a very very long time since his return to the Lost Clans, Yves found himself unable to do anything but grieve over the loss of his family. His parents, Mio, Kasja. The ensuing despair consumed his very existence entirely, turning him into a husk of his former self. Every single thing that he had ever strived for and accomplished seemed to have lost their meaning now that he seemed to have nothing left to live for.

He knew not what triggered the sudden change in him but ever since Death told the Horsemen that they were to take time off for a 'vacation', that seemed to have brought about a change in his focus. His memory of the whereabouts of his family as well as Kasja were now fuzzy so instead he began to dwell on what led to their disappearance in the first place.

The Hunters.

They were a formidable opponent and a pesky hindrance to his tasks on so many occasions that he couldn't care to count even. They were the cause of this. Why whatever remained of the Four Clans now had to come together as the Lost Clans. It was a far cry from what they had previously, what he grew up with. If the Horsemen had battled with them and lost their home as a result, it was difficult but he could perhaps come to terms with that particular outcome at some point eventually.

But this. This massacre of their families and loved ones was unforgivable.

He would get to the bottom of this some day. He would get his hands on one of them, make use of every means he knew to get whatever information he needed out of the dastardly human and then one day he would make sure that they pay in kind. An eye for an eye.
