The familiar and altogether overwhelming fear of death was once again hovering over Oliver's head.
The trainee had not even been out of his pod for a week yet and the island was still a big, scary place. Somehow he had managed to get to his duties on time for the first three days, and only lost his lonely little bedroom once. He had only skipped two meals while being unable to find the mess hall and too afraid to ask for directions. So far so good, he thought, but the constant anxiety was wearing on him.
He wasn't sure what hallway he was in, or even what building this was for. But somehow he couldn't find his way out, and he couldn't find the Life labs where he was scheduled to feed the minipets in an hour's time. He had already been wandering in circles for the past half hour, and the teen was starting to worry he would be lost forever. That outcome wasn't much better than being killed on the spot for being incompetent...
Oliver tried peeking around another corner, but there were merely more corridors, more unfamiliar doors, and not a window or landmark to be seen. He was definitely going to be lost forever at this rate.

The first time Oliver walked by, Ripley only gave him a passing glance. The second time, he thought the young man looked familiar, but didn't really think too much on it. When it became a third, fourth, and even a fifth time though, well, that caught his attention. Either he was lost, or acting suspicious on purpose; if the latter were true, it was a test to follow up on that division meeting he had been a part of not too long ago.
So the next time he saw the nervous looking young man, Ripley closed his book, waited a few seconds, and then he stood up and started down the same hallway the other man had disappeared into. It didn't take him long to not only catch up, but to quietly stand behind him as he peeked around the corner.
"Lost?" Ripley asked suddenly, peering down at the stranger through his glasses.

Oliver was peering around another corner nervously when suddenly the other made their presence known. With a yelp the boy leapt forward, tripping over his own feet and just barely avoiding an awkward meeting with the ground. "Y-yes!" He stammered nervously, "I-I am s-so sorry! I-I h-have to be at the labs, b-but I can't find them, and I'm really n-not sure how to get there from here, or even h-how to get out of th-this building," he babbled, his fright forcing him to explain much faster and more thoroughly than the situation called for. He took a nervous step backwards, his back hitting the opposite side of the hallway. The boy looked like he was going to keel over and play dead any minute now.

Ripley didn't need to look at the other Trainee's coat - he had seen enough of it as he had trailed the poor kid - and he understood immediately why he needed to go to the labs. Still, he was way off; not even in the right building. Apparently, he wasn't all that great with directions but, to be fair, this place was built backwards and upside down. So he understood being lost, but...
"I see." He could not understand the nerves the boy was currently exhibiting. The Death Trainee's expression remained carefully neutral; it was a well-practised default, and he was quite proud of his pokerface. "The exit is that way." He offered helpfully, in as few words as he could muster, and pointed back down the hallway they had both come from. Though what he didn't express was the various other hallways he'd need to visit before he found the labs.
"...I could show you, if you wanted." He offered, deciding to be nice to this obviously new kid; he had been in his shoes once, after all. It also worked out in his favour simply because he had to profile some people, and he might as well get 'em early.

Whether the pokerface would hold up under intense scrutiny or not, it was enough to cause a tense knot of anxiety to form in the pit of Oliver's stomach. He hadn't become familiar enough with rank and attire to know it was another trainee who had approached him, and with that unsmiling face, the stranger's arrival could have meant anything. The boy's glance followed the gesture towards the exit, and a hint of hopelessness joined the fear in his expression. But... He had just come that way. He must have been completely turned around, everything looked the same in this building and perhaps the way he had thought he had come was really not the way he had travelled before, but a new route he had accidentally stumbled upon while trying to retrace his steps a few corridors back. A helpless, freckled face turned back to the other trainee. "P-please," Oliver squeaked, looking as though merely accepting the offer for help would summon a legion of ghosts and demons to smite him on the spot.

Ripley's only further invite was a tilt of his head before he started moving, taking the same hallway he had pointed down. A few steps later and the quiet trainee looked over his shoulder at the timid kid.
"You're new here?" He prompted, slipping his hands into one of his many coat pockets. It was obvious if only by the demeanour, but it was equally likely this kid was simply shell shocked by the, well, interesting way this island was run. "What's your name?"

The boy was quick to take the hint, and quick to cling to the only lifeline in sight. His company may have been unsettlingly quiet and unexpressive, but Oliver preferred it to wandering around lost, and so he followed at a safe and respectful distance.
He flinched slightly when the other turned around. "Y-yes," he stammered nervously. "M-my first week. My name is Oliver. O-Oliver Keeley." In his confusion over whether to address his rescuer as 'sir' or not, he omitted it entirely. But the way he carried himself spoke volumes for him.

First week? Well, that explained it.
"I see." Ripley had quite a few things to say on the subject, but sadly had to keep his mouth shut. His bracelet put him under twenty-four hour scrutiny, and he was sure they were listening to him, too. There was no way he was safe enough to voice his concerns about the island and the way it was run, so all he could do was ponder the best things to say that wouldn't get him in trouble. First and foremost - and definitely easiest - was his name.
"Nice to meet you, Oliver. I'm Ripley Crowell." The Trainee rounded a corner, figuring he didn't need to check to see if he was being followed. "This place is terrible if you're not used to it." He admitted after a small silence, figuring that it would help him in the long run. "I suggest making your own map." He had made his own once upon a time, but had lent it to Finn once he knew where he was going.

"A-a map...?" Oliver asked quietly, more for his own confirmation than anything. He had never been good at that sort of thing, even in videogames he couldn't make his own map to save his life. And often died for it. Virtual deaths, at least. He might have better luck now that his own life was at stake.
There was another moment of silence before the kid spoke up again. "I-it is... v-very frightening," he admitted reluctantly. There was something shameful about admitting it out loud, even when his entire body showed the effects of nerves being wound too tight. "I-I've n-never been very strong."

Ripley nodded to confirm. Yes. A map. To his knowledge there weren't many reliable maps of Deus, and even then it was easier for him to make his own. Somehow, Oliver's next words didn't surprise him in the slightest.
"I imagine you'll grow fast." A scaredy cat who wasn't strong seemed like a recipe for disaster on this island. Ripley may not have been strong, but he was typically resourceful and could roll with most punches...but this kid? If someone yelled 'boo' loud enough he'd probably go flying. "You'll have to." He amended almost immediately after those thoughts.
"My first day here, I asked for advice." Well, it wasn't his first day, but details, details. "I was told 'Don't Die'. I'd keep that in mind."
