"This was supposed to be a second chance, not an eternity."
Ren sat on the boardwalk, playing with a small kitten that he had found roaming around the area. The little guy was probably hoping to snag a fish or two from one of the local fisherman, but Ren could not help but pick him up and start playing with him. "You're just too adorable, you know? My one weakness." He joked with the cat, picking him up and looking at the feline in the eyes. Such a cute creature, how could he possibly ignore the small kitten? I came here hoping to pick up some work with the fishermen... I shouldn't be getting distracted like this. He thought to himself as he continued to waste time with the kitten. Moments like this really helped to show how innocent Ren really was on the inside. "Ah! No! Don't run away little guy!" He shouted as the cat leaped from his arms, running off after sniffing the air. Just why did the kitten suddenly run away from him, and what if the little guy got into trouble!? Ren quickly stood up and ran after the cat, wanting to collect the small feline before it got into any real trouble.
"Stop running! You're too fast!" He shouted to the kitten as he raced after it. Guess all that traveling really was good for something after all. The young man thought to himself. All this running probably would have tired him out if he had not been traveling around so much, always having to be on the move. It really helped build up an endurance for things like this. Still, this cat did not seem to be letting up at all, just where was it trying to get to anyway? Ren soon found his answer when the cat came to a stop near a bunch of fliers, a fish lying on the ground in front of them. A dropped fish? All this running was for that? They had to have run at least four miles. Just how did it even smell the fish from that far away to begin with?! What was this thing, some super cat!? "What kind of monster are you..." He asked, breathing heavily as he dropped down next to the cat and held it in place with his hands, so it would not run off again. The kitten simply bent its head forward and began to eat the fish, not restrained to the point where it could not reach the food.
On the bright side.... wait. Why did I even chase you to begin with? Sure you're cute but it's not like you're my cat. Realization dawned a bit too late for him, but there was no point in mulling over the effort and time he wasted chasing after the small kitten. "I feel kind of silly now." He muttered to himself, petting the kitten behind the ears so that he would feel better.

〠☾ It really was a nice day outside, with only one cloud in the sky that drifted so slowly, one could only notice if they sat and stared. That's exactly what Katrina was doing. As she sat on a curb, her legs were pulled up to her chest while she day dreamed silently. Eventually, she lowered her head so that her chin rested on top of her knees, and her focus remained on the single cloud in the sky. It was white and puffy, just like the kind she drew as a child that represented a happy day. But there were always several clouds in her pictures, sometimes overlapping and colored in bright shades...yet this cloud was alone. At least it was a silver cloud. White clouds were always boring to Kat, who preferred for them to have some kind of color in it, even if they could never be something silly like orange or pink.
At least an hour passed like this, her gaze wandering to different mundane things that, for some reason or another, she would analyze. Leaning back from her curled position, she toyed absently with a chain around her neck. It was long, and fell past the collar of her shirt to disappear behind her jacket so that no one could see what dangled from the end. It was an emerald, the size of a finger tip, and despite the beauty of the stone she refused to let it be seen. It was too important to her and the town she lived for, so she did her best to keep it close.
"Sure you're cute but it's not like you're my cat."
Katrina's whole body tensed as she sat straighter, her head turning to try and find where this thought had come from. There! A cat. One that seemed incredibly focused on a fish...and a boy? Her brow rose as she tried to remembered when he had entered her field of vision, but it seemed like she had spaced out enough to have missed a marching band go by. Well, of course she had, the only reason she noticed the boy and cat now was the fact that she had let her mind fall out open once again. Thankfully, the barrier she usually held had only slipped for a fraction of a second, hence the reason she had only caught a single line of thought from the dozens of people who had walked by her that morning. Shielding her eyes, she looked back up to the sky, noticing how far the sun had moved since she'd sat down. It was early afternoon now, and she as she stood, she heard several of her joints pop.
Slowly and without much purpose, Katrina approached the boy, or rather the cat. For some reason, she felt the need to comfort it...oops, perhaps her mental barrier had slipped more than she realized. That would explain why she was focusing so intently on the feelings of the cat. Usually, she tried to block out the feelings of animals, as sensing the emotions of sentient creatures and humans was enough to keep her brain busy. Nevertheless, when she was only a yard away from the pair, she dropped to her knees, her hand reaching out to the cat. With a small smile, she stroked it affectionately, completely ignoring the boy despite the fact that he was only an arm's length away. You look half-starved, little one.
But it’s ok now...what are you worrying about... [Chorus]
There. Is. Nothing. Or rather, nothing Hei Ryung could afford. She pinned the boardwalk billboard with a dark stare, as if she were attemtping to intimidate the flyers for roommates to lower their prices. After a moment of heated combat, she huffed and slumped her shoulders. "No good I suppose." She planted her hands on her hips. "Why's everyone gotta be so uptight in Janhall? I'm not made of money, and a girl's gotta eat!"
To extentuate the word "eat", her stomach growled on command, followed closely by Hei Ryung's dramatic groan. She turned around and slumped against the flyers plastered to the wall and stared straight ahead at the docks and the stalls hawking their wares and games. "Boy would some fish and chips be really good right now...Nooo."Hei Ryung shook her head and dug into the pockets of her shorts, pulling out a handful of scraps with renter's phone numbers on them. Hei Ryung took out a deep breath. The best she could find in the ways of boarding houses or apartments was way out of her budget, and she was NOT wiling to cut anything back. She'd been barely surviving on 6 cheeseburgers a day and jumping around from associates' place to place, and spending the odd night bunked in Janhall's hospital wing sometimes empty enough to house a homeless student. It would have been easier if her parents had kept sending her some support, but she supposed they didn't really want to have it traced back to them anymore.
She couldn't even call them without a cell phone. She dug some more in her pocket, but there wasn't much free change in there today. She sighed and drooped over her knees, the image of surrender to the world's forces of unfairness to hungry working class.
As if to mock her, a small black kitten dashed around the corner, followed by a teenage boy, stomping on her foot in his pursuit. He didn't even notice. It didn't exactly hurt, but Hei Ryung felt like someone was somewhere laughing at her. She watched the boy sourly, holding his cat in place as it dined on boardwalk sushi.
"I feel kind of silly now," the boy said.
Hei Ryung was drawn off the wall to tilt her head silently over his shoulder. "Awww! It's so cute." Instantly forgetting her troubles, Hei Ryung squatted down beside him, holding the scraps of phone numbers in her lap and stretched out two fingers. "Can I pet...?"
Two pairs of feet stepped right up to them, and a willowy, dark haired figure, the kind that was the exact of Hei Ryung's short and skinny-curvy cuteness crouched on her knees and held her hand out as well. The tiny black feline, and it purred and brushed up against her knee. Hei Ryung pouted. "Hey, I wanted to pet it next," she complained.

"This was supposed to be a second chance, not an eternity."
And all of a sudden Ren was surrounded, unsure of what to do or say. They did not seem to be hostile, but they were of the opposite gender, which meant he had to act differently, right? No, no, no, that was a stupid kid thing to do, he was an adult now, seventeen is what that woman told him! He was mature enough to conduct himself properly, at least he should be! Taking a deep breath, he sat there not sure what to say to either of them, very confused about how he should handle the situation. One of them seemed to be flat out ignoring him, which really did not help how awkward this situation was for him, but the other one directly spoke to him, making him look to her quickly and try to answer he question, maybe a bit too fast. "S-S-Sure! You can pet him!" He blurted out, obviously not thinking too much about his answer but wanting to get the words out. Where did these two even come from anyway? Did they see me chasing this little guy? He thought to himself as he watched the other girl petting it, still ignoring him for some odd reason. Well, it probably did not matter too much, it made this a little bit easier on him.
That was when his eyes caught all of the phone numbers in the girl's lap, Ren simply staring at them with a rather simple look on his face. "Hey... you must be really popular to get so many people's phone numbers, huh?" He stated, staring at the phone numbers in her lap. As a kid he had never really gotten anyone's phone number, not to say he was not like or anything like that. Simply no one really gave him their number, then again that really was not a kid thing. Grown ups and teenagers got each others' numbers all of the time, so I guess it was normal for a girl to walk around with a hand full of them. "I've never seen someone with so many. I remember this guy that had quite a bit, but not nearly as many as you've got." He said to her, still entranced by how many phone numbers she had gotten. It was a simple misunderstanding for him. His eyes then turned towards the cat and he moved him towards the other girl so that she could pet him too. "There you go." He said to her, holding the kitten between the two girls.
The kitten had already devoured the fish, so it was not fidgeting or anything in his hands. If it had then he probably would have had to set it down or risk getting clawed to death by it. Killed by a kitten at the beginning of my journey... what a way to go. He thought to himself, sighing at the thought. Then again he really did not have to worry about dying from things like that, at least for a good while. "So what are you two doing down here? Are you fisher... um... women?" Ren asked, not sure what to call them since fishermen would sound kind of.... well it was obvious that it did not sound quite right. It was probably the proper term but he felt that calling them fishermen would be slightly insulting for some odd reason, so he decided on fisherwomen. "It's a pretty dangerous job out there on the seas. But I'm glad there's people like you who bring us fresh fish." He stated to the two of them, the cat meowing in unison with his words. Obviously he had come to yet another misunderstanding, this time regarding the both of them. They did not seem like fisher...women, but they might be.

But it’s ok now...what are you worrying about... [Chorus]
The boy stuttered out an affirmative. She held out her fingers, letting the cat turn, sniff, and bury its little furry skull into the palm of her hand. "Eehee, he? He's so soft!"
The tiny animal purred like a jet plane and butted Hei Ryung's knuckles affectionately. Hei Ryung perched with one hand on her chin and that arm's elbow on her knee, so that she saw she saw the boy looking at her. Well, down from her face. She blinked back at him. Was he looking at her chest? He was ogling. She turned back to the cat, blushing, feeling a little superficially flattered.
"Hey... you must be really popular to get so many people's phone numbers, huh?"
Hei Ryung glanced down into her lap at the mashed up paper ball of renter's phone numbers. She took it as a joke, an excuse. She smiled wryly. "Not as popular as you'd think," she replied.
He went on, and Hei Ryung raised her brow inquisitively. She wondered, is he for real? It was off. He sounded like a rambling little kid, not a rambling teenager.
She brushed it off. Despite her whining stomach and resigned feelings towards yet another night bunking in a public institution, She could not restrain the tiny squeal of delight in the back of her throat when the boy shifted the cat closer to her.
"So what are you two doing down here? Are you fisher... um... women?" he asked.
"Oh, you know." Hei Ryung began, shrugging
"It's a pretty dangerous job out there on the seas. But I'm glad there's people like you who bring us fresh fish."
Hei Ryung honked out a laugh. "You're funny. But no, I'm just collecting possible renters. I need to phone and negotiate, but everyone is so expensive!" She flung her arms out, appealing to the sky. "Waaah! Someone take pity on my poor unfortunate soul."

〠☾ Having no interest in anything but the cat, Katrina spent the next few moments petting it, ignoring the rambling sentences coming from the young boy at her side. She stopped only when the cat was picked up and placed closer to another girl, who had just complained that she wanted to pet it. Understanding the want, she argue, and simply resumed stroking the cat as they both continued to talk. The only real difference was that she was listening now to both the boy and girl. It helped her in a way, so that she could more securely block off their thoughts from what was actually being said. She listened as the boy began his assumptions of their jobs and the girl's reason for having so many phone numbers on her lap. Finally, when there seemed to be a small lull in the conversation, Katrina spoke up. "He's not funny." she said with a hint of amusement, "Or I mean, he isn't trying to be funny." The boy's emotions, or aura, whatever others called it, didn't match his face. He felt younger to her. The more he spoke, the more she believed that if she could read his thoughts, she would find some sort of fascinating story, but that wasn't the way she did things. "We're not fisherwomen. Or fishermen, for that matter."
As Katrina stopped petting the cat, she continued to speak nonchalantly between the two strangers. "I'm not allowed to have pets where I live. You two should take the cat." Her expression was pleasant, and her words came across as if it was the most logical conclusion to the problem of the cat's hard life, which was clearly her biggest concern.

"This was supposed to be a second chance, not an eternity."
Hm? Why was this girl suddenly blushing? Ah well, not like it really mattered. She seemed to think that she was not popular though, but that could not be the case if she had so many phone numbers, right? It did not really make sense to him, but he really did not want to try and bother her with any more questions about the subject. Instead he simply watched as she pet the kitten. She seemed to like the cat quite a bit. When he asked her if she were a fisherwoman she simply shrugged it off, not really answering his question at all. Did she not see a need to reply to him or something? Ren brushed it off as well, not really wanting to point it out or cause a problem, but at least she replied to him when he talked about how dangerous the job must be. Unfortunately, she merely called him funny and told him that she was only collecting possible renters. Ren assumed that she meant the phone numbers when she said that, as it seemed unlikely for someone to be collecting a bunch of actual people. Finally she complained about how expensive they all were.
Ren was at a loss for what to say, after all he had not been trying to be funny. But then they other girl bluntly stated that he was not funny, which made him feel slightly bad. She then quickly recovered by saying that he was not trying to be funny, but the damage was still done, but at least the wound was feeling a little better. Luckily this girl answered his question and explained to him that the two of them were not fisherwomen, and informing him that the proper term was fishermen. "So the term really is fishermen, huh? I wasn't too sure, it seemed like the wrong thing to say, you know?" He asked and looked at the two of them, laughing a little bit. That was when the girl told him that she was not allowed to have a cat and that the two of them, Ren and the other girl, should take the cat. "Take the cat? I'm not sure I'd be able to take care of a cat by myself, I don't really have the time when I'm out looking for work. Although he might like it if I go fishing every now and again." Ren stated, looking down at the cat he was holding between the girls and petting its sides with his thumbs.
"If I had someone to take care of him when I wasn't around then I probably could, but I couldn't leave him alone all day." Ren added, not sure what else to say about the subject as he stared at the cute kitten. "What do you wanna do, little guy?" He asked the kitten, moving his hands a bit and petting the cat slightly as he spoke. It was quite a cute kitten, and he really would like to take care of it if he could, but it needed more attention then what he could give it, sadly.

It was Lillixandra's day off, so she decided to spend it at the boardwalk. She knew it wasn't that safe for her. What if she fell in the ocean? She'd go out like a light, that's what. Instead, she stayed off of the beach and opted to lean on the rail, letting the ocean breeze caress her skin and lift her long auburn hair from her face. Lillix took in a deep breath and sighed happily. She spotted a long line of colorful kites happily floating on the wind, only being held back by thing strings. Lillix yearned to change and spread her wings to take flight on this wonderful wind. But Mabel had told her all about Daedalus and his son. Sure, Lilli's wings weren't created, but they were still made out of the fire that flowed through her veins and would be more easily extinguished by the ocean spray.
It was getting to be in the late afternoon, which meant one of her favorite things would be going on soon: street fights. Lillix knew it was wrong, but hey, she was good at it and it brought in a pretty penny. She knew the risks and consequences. Lord knows how many times Mabel had to get her out of the county jail for going to far in drunken brawls. But Lilli learned not to mix drinking and fighting.
The young woman picked some sand up out of an abandoned, sun-bleached sand pail and let flames envelop her fist. She watched entranced as the sand changed into a clear liquid then cooled into a solid piece of glass that fit perfectly in her palm. She set the object back into the pail and turned from the railing and began walking to the bus that would take her to the inner city. It was then that she noticed the man in all black walking down the boardwalk. She was amused at his choice of wardrobe color, especially on the beach. When she got closer to the mysterious man she called out to him. "Would you like to borrow a coat as well?" She laughed and kept walking. She said things like that often, it was in her nature. Lillix walked a few more feet before noticing a vendor who was selling dark chocolates. She happily drooled over the substantial selection before getting one of everything. She paid and the vendor handed her a small white paper bag filled with various shapes of dark brown goodness. She popped them into her mouth as she walked down the boardwalk.

He wasn't trying to be funny? Hei Ryung didn't really get it, but didn't mind it either. She shrugged it away and scritched the kitten's chin. It's liitle sooty face tilted up, it's baby fangs catching the light as it mewed. If she'd had a place, taking care of the cat would have been a no brainer. She didn't feel any collar. But, like the other woman's predicament, wherever Hei Ryung was staying tonight probably wouldn't welcome furry little cats.
"Believe me, I wish I could. He's just such a little sweetie pie!"
The boy loked up as well. "Take the cat? I'm not sure I'd be able to take care of a cat by myself, I don't really have the time when I'm out looking for work. Although he might like it if I go fishing every now and again." He and Hei Ryung both looked back down at the baby. It was just so irresistable. "If I had someone to take care of him when I wasn't around then I probably could, but I couldn't leave him alone all day."
Hei Ryung's head popped up like a whack a mole, her eyes fastened on the boy's head as if it were dinner. She grinned toothily. "I'm Hei Ryung Satoshi. I don't suppose you're looking for a roommate. I'm free of charge and I love little black cats!" She scooped the kitten up out of the middle of the three of them and held the baby up to the side of her head, so both he and Hei Ryung were oggling at Ren with wide dark eyes. "Say yeees," she drawled. .

〠☾ Remaining quiet as Ren responded, she couldn't help but feel his sting at her words. Sure, she could cut off the whole mind-reading thing, but empathy was a permanent ability that she was stuck with. "I hurt your feelings." she said without question, as if it were fact. As the conversation went on, Katrina quickly saw the opportunity presented to the other girl, who had said she was looking into possible renters. It was interesting, really, that this cat had become a sort of luck charm. Smiling faintly, she stood from her kneeling position, speaking lightly, "The cat would certainly approve."

"This was supposed to be a second chance, not an eternity."
How can this girl tell when she has hurt his feelings or not? What was she, psychic!? There was no way she could tell from his expression that what she said had messed with him! At least, that was what he though, maybe he subconsciously made some sort of face or reacted in a way that he did not notice? Whatever the case, she seemed to be aware that she hurt his feelings, and also did not seem to care too much about it, merely remaining quiet. I guess that's just how adults are, huh? Does that mean I should be more like that? He wondered to himself, thinking whether or not he should act like things are fact just like the girl in front of him. His attention was drawn away from her, however, by the other girl that seemed to really want to play with the cat before. He was startled by the sudden question about whether or not he was looking for a roommate. For a few moments he merely crouched there on the sidewalk, staring at the girl as he thought about what she had said. Having a girl in his apartment would be tough, but he did not just want to leave her out on the streets or anything like that.
Then the girl scooped up the kitten and held it close to her head, urging him to agree. What was this combined front? Ren bit his lip slightly before finally giving in, a sigh escaping him as he found himself incapable of denying the poor girl help, and the kitten a home. "A-Alright.... you can stay at my place." Ren said, not even adding any conditions or anything to staying in his apartment. Right now he was not even thinking about things like rent or anything like that, he just wanted to help the two of them, and they hit him in his weak points as well. Cute girls and kittens, it was a double K.O. to be honest. "But it's kind of weird isn't it? Aren't you still in school?" Ren asked and quickly continued. "I mean, you look kind of young. It just made me wonder why a school kid needs to look for a place to stay." Ren said, not sure how else to phrase what he was trying to convey. Surely she must have a home, unless she was an orphan, right? That was actually one of the few things he tried his best not to assume, as it could possibly lead to someone getting really angry with him.
"Uh... it doesn't matter actually." Ren quickly stated, not wanting to cause any problems and realizing that it probably did not matter why she was looking for an apartment, just that she was. "When should I start helping you move your stuff in?" He asked her, wondering if she was planning on moving in right away or not. He also turned his attention to the other girl, still wondering a bit about how she knew what he was feeling earlier. "Um... I'm Ren Ya-." He suddenly stopped, catching himself before he spoke his last name. That was a name that would surely get him into a lot of trouble if he spoke it. "My name's just Ren, it's nice to meet the two of you." He said to them, smiling brightly and rubbing the back of his head as he spoke. Hopefully none of this would be too problematic for him.

"Why no, I would not like to borrow a jacket. It's actually quite cool in here."
Lillixandra nearly choked on her chocolate; the voice was quite a surprise. She didn't choke because a tiny flame erupted from her fingertips and melted the chocolate, which now dripped down her palms and onto the ground. Disappointed but somewhat amused at being snuck up on--which didn't happen, ever--she licked the delicious remnants of her snack and turned. Sure enough it was the man who had dressed in all black.
"Hasn't your mama taught you not to sneak up on people? Especially boxers, I mean, come on! What if I punched you or something?" She paused and laughed. "Oh, man! Taken out by a girl. What a laugh," she finished with a shake of her head. She looked up and smiled. "Anyways, where were we? Ah, yes. How can it be cool under all that. . .dark and heavy clothing? Also, would you like some chocolate?"
Lillix wasn't sure if he would keep walking with her, but she her fists had a date to keep. With some poor schmucks face. She held out a piece of chocolate that had cherry filling inside--she hated cherry filling. Lillix hoped he would take it, or she would have to eat it. She didn't have any hands to get out a piece she would eat and if she threw it back in the white paper bag then she'd accidentally pull it out later and eat it. Somehow she got lucky and actually looked at what she was grabbing (for once).
