His parents. Smart people.

unexpected

It took him until early second October to realize that he hadn't contacted her since their fight on New Year's night. He probably should have at least made an attempt, considering their spar hadn't ended on a particularly sour note, but Bren found himself thinking less and less of teasing smirks and snowy moonlit strolls in the busy weeks that followed. He did start a training regimen two mornings after their spar, though it was more a reaction to seeing the sorry state of his weapons than the fact that he'd been beaten by a ghoul. As recently as a year ago they'd been almost majestic, but now they looked a lot like butter knives rather than proper blades. His training didn't last long. He told himself it was because he had plateaued, not because he was in constant physical pain.

Knowing Piper, he was going to eventually have to make amends for unintentionally ignoring her, probably in some obvious, splashy sort of way that involved dressing up small animals and experiencing an infinite amount of embarrassment. Luckily, he had the perfect excuse for a spectacle. Scarentines. The very idea was terrifying.

For the next week thoughts of what he might do were never far from his mind. Buying her some average Scarentines gift seemed far too forward, but anything less might be seen as a slight. When he finally decided on an etched golden bangle he'd found in a shop near the maul, it was a relief. His mother called that night, calmly requesting that he come home as soon as he could manage to. Something had happened to his father.

Brenley left the next morning. He didn't have time to give Piper his gift or his apology.

liar

There was no emotion in his mother's voice as she informed him that there was nothing wrong. It wouldn't be very fair to judge her. There wasn't much in his monotone either.

"But, you said..."

"I said, 'Something happened to your father.'" She lifted the infuser out of her teacup and took a seat at the table. "I'm quite certain something happens to him every day."

Brenley smirked in spite of his frustration, shaking his head as he sat opposite her. "So, you just wanted me home?"

"My boil is so astute."

"You could have, you know, asked me to come."

"And you would have? Would you have put aside all the excitement of your new life to come back here if I hadn't fibbed a little?"

He thought of the classes, the experiments, the plans he had put on hold to be here and found himself shaking his head before he realized he was doing so.

"Hm. I thought not."

bitter

She hadn't done more than nod when he'd excused himself, but he could feel her disapproving stare on his back all the way down the hall. Brenley had always been able to read his mother, perhaps because there had never been a time when they weren't frighteningly close. Anyone who judged the pair by initial appearance would have reason to be skeptical of that fact, but when in their presence for more than five minutes, the similarities in personality and bearing were too striking to ignore. His father hadn't been evil or even a deadbeat, he'd just been... busy. Davis Marshall Quinn had been a rising star in the world of construction while his son was growing up, and though the gryphon had provided his reaper wife and child with a comfortable home, he hadn't been around much to see the what his hard work had bought.

It was only after Bren decided he was determined to go to Amityville that he realized the benefit of having a largely absent father. Davis had clapped him on the back and grinned at the news, spouting platitudes and advice like he was interviewing for a job at Gallmark. His mother had never cried over it—that was not her way—but she had clung even tighter to him in the months before he'd gotten his acceptance letter, as if she could make him stay by reminding him that she was all he had. She didn't understand that that was part of the reason he wanted so desperately to go.

fear

Brenley emerged several hours later when his mother announced that dinner had been served. She was quiet, as usual, but he could tell she was making a deliberate effort to come across as pleasant. It was unnerving.

"So," she finally said once they'd taken their seats at the table. "You mentioned some new friends when we last talked. How have they been?"

The last time he had spoken to his mother had been just before his trip into the mist, back when his only friends had been ghouls and the most exciting thing he'd seen had been someone puking into a bush. He had much more interesting topics to discuss now, but if she wanted to talk about his acquaintances, he would oblige. He doubted she'd be pleased to learn they were all still ghouls.

"They're, um, fine, I suppose? I've been keeping to myself a lot lately, so I don't really know." That was hardly their fault, but from the way his mother's face warped into an expression of concern as she daintily bit at her chicken, he might as well have told her they were bullying him hourly.

"Well, I'm sorry about that, darling."

"It's fine, mom. Really. It's not like I need to see them constantly or anyth—"

"I did tell you when you were admitted to that school that things would be difficult. You can always come home. You know that. None of them are important."

Without warning, and for no reason he could fathom, Brenley's skin went cold and clammy. His heart began to race in what could only be a reaction to his mother's words, but the boil was at a loss as to what she might have said to spark such panic. They wormed into his brain, the sound of her voice making his guts crawl. His hands shook as he carefully placed his fork back onto his plate and stumbled to his feet.

"Honey? What's—"

"I... I have to go. I'm..."

The rest of Brenley's reassurance went unsaid. He wasn't sorry at all.

confusion

He couldn't breathe. Bren stumbled to his room and dropped onto the bed, only managing to suck in a lungful of air once he was off of his feet. He hadn't a clue as to what had just occurred, all he knew was that in a single moment he had gone from feeling completely neutral about his surroundings and his mother's conversation to despising her so thoroughly that he had to get away for fear he would do something he couldn't predict. Something horrible.

None of them are important.

That was all she had said, yet those words made him feel as though the world was coming to an end. Bren reached up to press his hand to his heart, freezing when he realized that the mysterious lock he had worn there for the last seven months was gone.

"Curious."
