Marzena had never been one for gossip or rumors. It was something she left entirely up to her other sisters; Sabina, especially, was the rumor mill that spouted out new bits of information every single day, ridiculous or not. Usually it had to do with the selkie boils and romantic endeavors; who had gotten together and who had broken up. Marzena always thought it was a load of crud, and said that they should just lead their own lives and not be interested in others.
But it was one day, when Sabina was struggling to get a comb through her hair, and decided to resort to brute forcing undoing a tangle with her fingers, that something she said actually peaked Marzena's interest. "I hear there's a witch in town." Her older sister said, a hint of exasperation in her voice as she picked the brush back up again.
"A witch?" Radek echoed. Her brother had been sitting in the corner with an annoying grin on his face, all while making funny faces at her in an attempt to make her laugh. Now, his back was straight, and bright blue eyes twinkled with curiosity.
"A witch." Sabina affirmed, looking pleased that her siblings were actually paying her the attention that she deserved at this very moment. "They say she has tentacles that will snare you in, along with a magic cauldron that bubbles away."
Marzena snorted. "How magic is this cauldron if it just bubbles away? Anyone who isn't dumb enough can keep a fire going for days with ample wood and care."
"Oh, it certainly is magic!" Her sister huffed. "I hear Cecile went to her for advice, and a few days later, she was seen with Alois, and he had never paid any attention to her before! Ever!"
"Oh praise Jack, she's handing out love potions." Marzena drawled, as Sabina twisted her hair up into a bun and proceeded to stab several pins into her head. "Ow, will you watch it?"
"Beauty comes with a price, Marzie." Her older sister patted her head. "I'm confident that this isn't just some simple witch, oh no. She's traveled all over Halloween Town, and a love potion is certainly just the start of her endeavors here. Maybe she could even instill some proper hair-care into that stubborn mind of yours."
"No magic could change Marz's mind." Radek chuckled. "Not even if she's some famed travelling witch."
Marzena opened her mouth to retort, but found herself pinned down by Sabina's arms on her shoulders. "Sabina!"
"I'm almost done, you know. And if that witch could do that, I'd totally go to her, except that witches all come with a price, and I couldn't risk any harm coming to myself, can I? Besides, I'm already..."
It was then when she tuned out the babblings of her sister, her mind starting to concoct an idea. Maybe, just maybe, she should go...
So lost in thought she was that she hadn't noticed that Sabina had finished her handiwork and had drifted off to bother Mira instead. Radek threw her a quizzical look, but she simply replied him with a half-hearted smile, lapsing into thought once again.

L O V E
She was entirely familiar with the emotion that was affection.
As dismissive and cold she seemed, along with a permanent scowl upon her face; at least that was what the whispers around her described her as, Marzena was not devoid of the warmth of sentimental feelings.
She tolerated it, like the outbursts that was Sibyl's excited furor upon seeing her. She would even raise a incredulous eyebrow at the rumors that she never smiled, not once, not ever. Many a time she had cracked a smile when faced with the ridiculousness of her siblings, or even when she had beaten them yet again in another swimming competition. Marzena acknowledged that these were mainly under familial conditions, but it was truth, nonetheless, that "the dark look that mars your pretty features should stop, honestly Marzie", in Sabina's own terms, was everlasting. The happier moments could prompt out a soft smile lighting up her face, like when she managed to sing Damian to sleep.
But love?
Love was a vast concept compared to that of affection. Love was a bond between two people, strong and lasting, and she supposed she could understand it, on the surface level, but she doubted she would experience it.
There had been no rushes of blood to her cheeks, no palpitations of her heart quickening whenever she saw anyone specific. No tingles in her stomach, no light that cheered her up considerably, all symptoms she had managed to glean from Sabina's sighs on her new crush of the week.
Even as Radek started to mature into a notorious flirt around the waters they lived in, she would watch him with befuddlement and think how silly it was, to be wooed by such honeyed words, to be captured heart and soul.
"One day, you'll understand, Marzie." Her brother had said many a time. "One day, a boil or ghoul will sweep you off your feet-- hey, don't give me that look. One day, you'll find someone, and I'll be there to assess whoever it is."
"I'd rather you'd smack me out of such ridiculous thinking." She had always dismissed such talk with a scornful remark.
Love? Hah.
All she knew was that she was perfectly content with affection.

L I A R
She finds herself thinking lately, about what would happen if she tells her family, with the exception of Radek, who knows everything, the truth.
Even in her mind, she cannot find it in herself to be overly optimistic and for them to all rush her with hugs and wail; it's needlessly sentimental and feels as though a spider has crawled right down her spine. She can only think of shocked, disappointed faces, anger contorting her father's face as he slams his fist on the table and disowns her for good and her mother holding him back as she tries to talk sense into him, as they all--
She stops it there because that is entirely too realistic and it gives her such fear if it were to come true.
(But she also can visualize her response; she can see herself staring right back at him with a bitter smile upon her face, and lapsing into resigned laughter as she slams the door of her family home, never to return again. She can see her brothers rushing out after her, her sisters too, maybe even Sabina would be inclined to fall to such desperation--)
Needless to say, it does not end well. It never ends well, and she thinks that she would rather walk over the burning coals of Hell than to have that situation ever happen. She lies about her condition whenever necessary here. She even finds it easy to lie, to conceal the truth, because it is none of anyone's business. It is her duty and responsibility alone.
And she will lie, and keep her deepest secret close to her heart, until she finds a way to undo this.

R E V U L S I O N
She was a pretty tough ghoul, if she would say so herself.
Marzena was not afraid of muck or dirt or anything that would ruin her clothes or hair, as her sister Sabina would attest to. Many a time had her older sister attempted to comb out the many tangles in her hair, and scream in horror at seeing her come home from a grueling day. She had often been lectured sternly, along with wags of a finger, as Radek dissolved into helpless laughter which promptly ceased when it came to his turn.
But this? It made her gag, and it was all she could do to act natural and push it discreetly to the side of her plate.
Marzena Adriatico, from young, had been an absolute fan of octopus. It was this selkie's favorite food as long as she could remember, but recently, well more appropriately, ever since she entered Amityville, she had lost her taste for them entirely.
Just looking at the tentacles on her plate along with the bulging suction cups triggered in her the memories of larger ones curling around her, sticking unpleasantly to her skin, and nausea overwhelmed her.
There was no way she was going to eat that, ever again.
And the thing that sickened her the most was how weak she was to give in.

T R O U B L E
Out of eleven children, 2 boils and nine ghouls, the one obvious thing that set her (and her twin brother by extension) apart was her light blonde tresses. The rest of her siblings inherited their mother's chestnut brown locks, and it was a constant gripe of Sabina's that Marzena had been blessed with such pretty hair and not ever seem to want to take good care of it.
On the surface, Marzena seemed like an ordinary sister. Certainly not as motherly and responsible as Mira was, not as flighty and gossipy as Sabina was, not as playful and rambunctious as Zofia was. But she was certainly what the other selkie families around them would call a tomboil; uninterested in ghoulish activities, and constantly in the company of her brother. There was also a wary eye kept upon her simply because she had opinions, especially regarding the females of their kind and the purported weakness they had that could be easily exploited.
And certainly, Marzena felt like the problem child in the eyes of her father. It was because she dared to question him, to raise her voice and engage in heated debates; crudely put, they constantly fought. She fought to get the respect of a father, his acceptance and willingness to teach her, and he fought to put her down.
It was always difficult to get them to see eye to eye. Perhaps it would have been easier if her mother had been around for those formative years, and her late return could not quell the troubled waters between the two.
Without her, it was most probably easier at home. More quiet, more peaceful; a tranquility that would never last if she was there.
