Hero

Sin stared at the picture she'd pulled from her drawer, it was time to do a little fall cleaning and she'd pulled out all sorts of objects from her bedside table, some of which she was fairly certain she hadn't put in there herself. The picture though was something rather familiar to her and her thumb caressed the edge of it tenderly as she debated what to do with it. It was an old photograph of her as a little scareling, her fathers arms around her in a protective embrace and her mothers hands held out for her, waiting to carry her up to bed. She'd yanked the photo from it's ornate frame and tossed it in the drawer when she'd come back to Amityville after her parents had disastrously tried to change her to an all demon school and then confine her to home studies. The anger with them was still there but the memory of a time long since passed hit her with a sudden force of emotion.

~

"Now Sin, hold still! Proper young succubi do not squirm about as if they have skull-snakes under their skirts."

Her mother's voice was as always a firm command and she stopped her squirming while the coiffeur finished her intricate braid. She knew today was special for her parents: a photographer was coming to take pictures of the Err Family for an important magazine and an article featuring some of the old distinguished demon families. Sin knew that smiles were always mandatory. There were a thousand different ways to smile, her mother had once told her, but she only knew about a hundred herself. She stood and turned to the coiffeur thanking her in a flawless, frightful French before turning back to her mother.

"May I go and play until the photographer comes mother?" Sometimes it was exhausting to speak to her mother at all; so many delicate nuances she had to remember every little word held such weight.

"Play? No, I don't want your hair ruined, your dress sullied, your shoes scuffed, or your hands grubby when the photographer arrives. They are always so eager to try and take pictures of us when we aren't at our very best which is why we must...."

Sin sighed softly and finished the sentence appropriately. "Always be at our best."

"That's right, my little poison droplet. Why don't you go and read in the library instead? We have some of the new fashion books in and you'll need a new party dress for next week anyway..." She trailed off, her mind already busily plotting future events as she walked away from the supervision of her daughter's hair, certain that Sin would as usual take her advice.

It wasn't fair in the slightest, Sin thought. She just wanted to play a little, maybe dress some dolls or hold a pretend society tea. She tried to summon up enthusiasm for the new fashion books but they lost some of their charm now that she'd been told she had to look at them. She walked into the library, half hopeful Daddy would be there at his massive desk looking over a big book, but he wasn't. She knew he would be adjusting a bat-tie and letting his valet put in his cufflinks even though he said he hated how they clacked whenever he set his arms down on something. Mother said today was a cufflink day, so Daddy would be wearing the cufflinks, just as mother had said. Today Sin would wear a braid she's said...and so she did. She saw the fashion books sitting on a small side table next to her mother's favorite settee but a different tome called to her from across the room. She walked over and reached up high to an ornately bound volume on Ancient Demon Societies. Her little claws scrabbled on the shelf but failed to reach the book. She stepped up onto the lowest shelf and pulled herself to the proper height grasping the book and pulling it, but it refused to give instead it came half out and the sudden sound of grinding and shifting of gears made her hop down. She stood back and stared in awe as a bookcase slid aside revealing a faintly lit passage downward.

A secret passage. It was the most exciting thing Sin had yet to encounter in her young life. She peered down for a moment her elegant little black shoe moving tentatively over the threshold from library to passage. The hesitation was gone the second nothing terrible happened and she skipped down the dimly lit spiraling passageway until she reached an expansive room where the elegant carpet gave way to soft cushioned mats. Sin walked in and was pleased to see herself reflected in a mirrored wall to the left, a bar ran the length of the same wall. She glanced right where rings and cylinders hung suspended from the ceiling and a panel set in the wall glowed with colorful buttons. She gave a little bounce brimming with curiosity and then froze as a voice echoed throughout the room.

Training Sequence #208 initiated, prepare for combat in 3…

Sin couldn’t move, she felt only a sense of impending danger, she struggled to make sense of what the voice had said. Training, training was like lessons but combat…combat was fighting and she was being told to get ready to fight. Sin had never been in a fight before, proper succubi did not sully themselves with fighting, unless the sparring was of the verbal variety.

2…1

The voice completed it’s countdown and a panel in the wall ahead of her slid away releasing a small army of combat bots that rushed towards her.

“STOP!” She screamed trying to put the same kind of authority into her voice that she so often heard in her mothers.

The bots didn’t stop, they didn’t even slow down, the first one reached her and slammed into her with enough force to send her flying a few feet to land in an unceremonious heap. Sin screamed then tears filling her eyes and she tried to scramble to her feet and run. There was a sudden blur of motion and she looked to the left, in the mirror she could see her fathers reflection as he swiftly destroyed the bots. She saw her mother at the panel her long claws sweeping over the buttons as the panel closed and the bots fell lifelessly to the ground.

Her father was there then scooping her up, his hands running over her to check for cuts or broken bones, she was scared and stunned more than injured. He wiped her tears and held her close saying something to her mother and then lifting her chin.

“Maybe a little practice next time before trying to take on so many pumpkin?”

Her lip trembled for a moment before she remembered her mother was there and she had been crying. She struggled to put on a brave smile and slowly nodded relaxing when her father chuckled.

“I think we’d better get her in bed, the photo’s can wait I’m sure…”

Her heart skipped a beat; she knew how much the photos meant to her mother.

“I’m not sleepy.” She protested in an effort to save the day, the braid, the dress, everything.

Her parents walked out of the room her father holding her close, her mother frowning slightly and then the photographer was there.

“Oh what a touching family photo this will make!”

She heard the stranger’s voice and tried to force a smile, she looked up as she felt her father start to loosen his hold to hand her over to her mother.

“Daddy…you’re my hero.”

The flash went off, her mother pulled her close against her cool satin dress and brushed errant strands of her pink hair back.

“You’ll have to take another of us posed properly now.” Her mothers voice issued the stern order for the photographer and Sin quickly smiled and looked at the camera as her father moved behind her mother and set his arms lovingly around his wife and child, picture perfect.

~

Sin carefully slid the photograph into another frame, it was simpler and the thick black border on it almost entirely obscured her mother. She set it behind Rosc’s picture on the bedside table and went back to cleaning out the drawer.

Regret

Sin finished cleaning out her bedside drawers and smiled at how neatly organized it all looked down. She glanced over to the vanity fully intending to tackle it next before her careful color coordination of lipsticks turned into a chaotic mess. As she sat down however she caught sight of her reflection and for a brief second found herself slightly surprised. It wasn’t as if she didn’t look at her reflection daily, she sat in front of her vanity hours at a time everyday. Yet day to day slow changes occurred and Sin had barely noticed them, some things like the growth of her wings and the length of her hair had made themselves known but other small details hadn’t. She noticed now the slightly sharper edge of her gleaming white teeth, the way her eyes glowed a little more intense, and the expression…the smile. Slowly she forced her mouth to relax into a more natural expression and found herself staring at a virtual stranger.

The smile came back a second later and she realized that it looked eerily familiar, it was her mothers smile, that secret false little smile that concealed whatever true emotion lurked behind it. Sin had been taught that smile so well and she’d adopted it and treasured the ability to hide her feelings behind it for so long that now she realized what a disservice it did her. She’d held her mother up as the ideal for so long that now that she was failing to live up to her mother’s expectations she loathed herself. An immediate wave of regret hit her and then it hit her again when she felt the tears shimmer a second before vanishing and that false little smile brightening her reflection.

“Little hypocrite…” She murmured at her reflection and then stood and whirled away, she would clean the vanity later.

Dilemma

In the kitchen she faced a mild dilemma as she stared into her small freezer box and debated between the merits of floresce sushi or a sandwich. Sin gave a slight sigh and shoved aside the ingredients for both grabbing the leafy greens for a salad instead. One did not keep a shapely figure by eating whatever one pleased. Yet more wisdom from her mother, she slammed the door and then set down a bowl harder than needed irritated that she couldn’t get her mind off her mother for something as simple as lunch. She whisked up some dressing and then made a bit extra in a small container for Rosc.

Thinking of her boilfriend soothed her a bit, she grabbed her eyePod and set it to repeat the recording of Rosc playing his cello. A few deep breaths and bites of salad later and she felt much better. The old memories and regrets slowly faded to the back of her mind where the constant fear of hunters, worry for the safety of the school, concerns about her future, and myriad of other issues resided. She ate slowly savoring the fresh tastes and the good music and then rinsed her dishes and closed her eyes to savor the peace of the moment.

Chaos

It was a very short-lived peace for Sin she jerked at the sudden sound of a crash and screech. She turned in time to see her Unmentionables on the vanity trying to grab onto a panicked looking Foxsquirrel. The Foxsquirrel escaped through her open window and the Unmentionables took one look at her expression and flew out, they knew better than to stick around after causing their moment of chaos. She walked over and cringed at the sight of her vanity earlier it had been slightly untidy with a few things out of place, now it looked like a cosmetic war-zone. Globs of facial cream dripped off the edge onto her stool, lipsticks in thirty different shades of pink and purple were scattered all over on the floor some had even rolled into the bathroom, and fragments of glass from a hand mirror were scattered on the vanity and floor. She cursed and grabbed a towel to wipe things up brushing up the glass and swearing as a shard cut her.

As she looked down at the blood she felt a painful flash of an old memory that was hers yet not. Her body ached for a brief second and she drew a ragged breath Julian’s eyes swimming in her vision. She stood hastily dizzy for a second before hurrying to the kitchen sink and letting the water run icy. She looked away as the bloody water spiraled down the drain and then quickly bandaged the shallow cut. For a moment she simply leaned against the counter hugging herself tight and thinking about her friends and her family. In a way her friends here at Amityville had become somewhat of a family, a family of her choosing. Yet she knew in her heart that her parents loved her, adored her, and they wanted her safe. Her safety was the conflict that stood between them now and she remembered so long ago when she’d been that frightened little scareling.

~

After the photograph had been taken her father had given her the first picture that was ‘all wrong’ as her mother had declared. He’d sat on the edge of her bed and brushed her hair, now loose from its braid, back.

“Are you hurt pumpkin?”

She’d smiled a genuine smile and shook her head. “No, you saved me Daddy.”

“You were lucky Sin, your mother heard you scream, someday we might not be there to save you my little bit of spider bait and then you’ll have to save yourself.”

“Why?” She frowned and her fingers tightened in the covers.

“It’s the way things are pumpkin, someday when your older you’ll be out in the world. I think we’ll start giving you some training soon…you’ll need more than piano lessons and fashion classes someday.”

“The piano doesn’t hit me.” She scowled.

Her father laughed and kissed her forehead tucking her scarebear doll beside her. “Goodnight pumpkin, sleep tight, invite the bugs to crawl all night.”

Sin closed her eyes and curled up with a yawn enjoying the darkness, but caught half between slumber and wakefulness she heard her parents voices. They were distant but loud enough, they almost never raised their voices and she strained to hear wondering what the excitement was.

“Proper young succubi do not spar!”

“Someday she’ll have to know how to defend herself, every demon does.”

“We are here to protect her!”

“And someday we won’t be, then what? Do we leave our only child unable to take care of herself? You can protect yourself and no one would ever accuse you of being an improper succubus.”

“I learned self defense when I was older it was a part of gym at school!”

“Sin will simply receive a better education here at home until she goes to school.”

“I don’t want my daughter thinking little some savage monster that she needs to use tooth and claw to protect herself. She needs finesse, polish, a sharp wit, these are the weapons we should expect her to wield!”

“And she will, but when her sharp wit bounces off some thick-skulled high handed demon I want her to be able to deliver a solid kick!”

“She could have been dissipated today…”

“I’ll fix the security for the training room…I know you’re upset and you have every right to be, but that doesn’t change that this happened and that now I see that I’ve let myself forgo giving our daughter lessons of my own for too long.”

“You think I’ve neglected teaching her essentials?”

“Perhaps simply because you don’t deem them essential. I will tutor Sin at least one day a week from now on.”

“Fine.”

“Don’t be upset…”

The voices faded and Sin slowly drifted to sleep on a wave of excitement at the thought of lessons with her father.
~

Sin sighed and grabbed a little brush from under her sink moving back to the vanity to finish brushing up the broken shards of glass.

Balance

The last lipstick in the row was such a deep dark purple that it was really more black than anything and would have been called black except that it wasn’t completely devoid of color, a faint shimmer of violet was visible on the wearers lips in just the right light. Sin gazed at it a moment before putting it in place completing her clean up of the vanity. No evidence remained of the earlier mess unless someone noticed that Sin’s imported night cream was now two thirds empty. She frowned down at the arrangement trying to understand why something still seemed wrong. Her eyes traveled over the neatly arranged beauty supplies, her new hand mirror, her brushes and combs, over to the vase where she kept…her rose! The glass rose that Rosc had given her was missing. For a second she wondered how she hadn’t noticed that it was shattered with the mirror but she couldn’t remember a single shard of that hue during her cleanup.

There was a faint tap against the window, she turned to see Pantaloons holding the rose and grinning. He nuzzled the false flower and then Ladyluv was there slinking back inside and flitting over to the vanity. The Unmentionable hefted up the handle of her hairbrush and looked at Sin with a grin that made it all to clear what their game was. She gave them both a brushing or she lost the rose, minipet blackmail.

“Forget it you two troublemakers will spend a week in the closet if you don’t put that back where it came from right now!”

Ladyluv dropped the brush at her tone but Pantaloons grin never wavered, he shrugged and then scooted away with her precious flower. Sin growled under her breath and lunged towards the window to grab him but he was fast. She reached further and then climbed out onto the windowsill.

“Get back here this second Pantaloons I mean it!”

She edged along the side of the building and froze a little more than halfway between Rosc’s window and her own. Sin looked down and was almost hit by a wave of sudden vertigo. She was as usual wearing heels and her balance was precarious at best on this tiny ledge. Pantaloons for his part just giggled and then set her rose down in front of Rosc’s closed window before zooming back easily through hers. She watched in silent rage as he and Ladyluv pulled her own window closed behind her leaving her stuck out on the ledge.

Jackdamnit! Those obnoxious fluffy undergarment-stealing wretches! She teetered on the ledge and hastily moved her arms struggling to keep steady. She was closer to Rosc’s window but had no idea if he was even in his room; her eyePhone was back in her room so she couldn’t exactly call him. She felt a breeze hit her wings and cursed herself for being a fool, she should have taken flight lessons from someone by now. Her wings were mature enough to hold her now she could fly in theory but she never had. Well if she failed to keep her balance she’d be treated to a crash course in flying.

Death

Sin teetered dangerously on the ledge slowly scooting closer to Rosc’s window and trying to keep her wings tucked in to avoid the breeze. The trouble was her high heels, her dress, and her hair blowing in her face. Nothing about her current state was suited to this feat of danger. It was hardly a surprise when she slipped, she was more stunned by the sharp twist of her body and the way her hands gripped the ledge, apparently her many brushes with danger had honed her reflexes better than expected. As she dangled she debated shouting for help, but there was still a stubborn bit of demonic pride in her, she didn’t want to scream for help like a scareling. She started to spread her wings and gave a few test flaps, but all she managed was to set herself swinging wildly from the ledge.

This was how Rosc must have felt…

It was a painful thought that hit her randomly, how she’d failed to pull him from a chasm that had resulted in his dissipation. Sin had never suffered such a fate and she never cared to even if she got lucky and was only temporarily dissipated. The only thing that frightened her more than the thought of her essence being blown apart unable to reform was the thought of being trapped in an object to be used by her enemies. She’d been held in a cage before, she’d seen what the hunters could do, and she’d rather die a thousand deaths.

Her fingers slipped and she cringed as she felt her nails scrabbling in a hopeless attempt. She was going to fall, she started to flap her wings and as she felt her hand finally lose grip all she could think about was how horrible this last moment of not knowing was. Her arms flailed, her wings beat at the air in a frantic pantomime of flight, but she had no training no knowledge of the delicate art of flight. She sent herself into a wild spiral that barely slowed her decent enough that when she landed it was only in a painful heap.

A soft cry escaped her and she didn’t know what hurt more, her pride, or her wing.
