91. Frustration

"Daddy, No, I don't like him."

"Trisha, it is the duty of the Lamassu to find their pair and to guard the gates."

"Is that really our only duty?" Trisha huffed and left holing up in her room. It wasn't that he wasn't sweet and loving, and caring. It was that she just didn't feel it. She wanted to feel something, a connection. That was part of the argument, of why she wanted to get away. She wanted to go find herself a little and not be tied down by duty.

But how did one know who their pair was? Did she really even have to have one? Couldn't she just... That wasn't to say she wanted to be a lone wolf. It was dangerous out there. Neither Lion nor bull roamed alone. She wanted friends, she wanted to run with the herd, she just didn't want to stand guard, stand watch. Standing still was terrible and lonely, and he just didn't make her feel not alone.

She didn't want to stand in the dark, still as stone forever. For a while was fine, she like being sneaky and surprising friends but forever, she might explode from trying to stay like that. It was all just so frustrating.

1. Fear

FEAR, such an interesting word. it was all around them. She needed it, felt it in the very air she breathed, but she did not want to inspire it that much.

She wanted friends, and love. Once she asked her mother why they had to inspire Fear.

It was the paradox of the Apassu he mother said. They had always used their powers to protect. It was tradition. But how, how did protection inspire fear? She had asked.

"Because evil Fears those who guard the gates of good. But humans don't fear us as much anymore." she had said.

Trisha remembered something, The Naim, they were dying out... it seemed similar to her own people, there was mostly just the blood left behind. That was why it was so important to make scarelings through the pumpkins, to find a Lamassu and choose her pairing. But there were so few to pick from. She would run away.

Where? To here... maybe there was something, maybe it would be easier to just scare up a few more Lamassu. Maybe this Fear thing would be useful after all.

38. Companionship

Thunder. A thousand beating hooves against the earth as they ran. Each knew where their companion was and she knew where her family was, running alongside her. Together they were powerful, few other creatures stepped into the path of the lowered horns running full throttle across the plains. Only a few, those who's knees ached with old injuries, stayed behind to guard, for this was a time of celebration of life. A time of proof as the young ones showed of their skills, and ran the full track around the moon trail.

It was no race, just the breath shared and the hearts all beating as one, driving nightmares into the world beyond, or perhaps a distant memory of when the hooved creatures roamed the earth knowing no boundaries.

Mooma, one of the elders ran along back, biting and prodding the flanks of those who lost speed. She would not feel those teeth today. As the final curb came there was a cry, full of battle lust and exhilaration though she did not see the end, she could feel them pass over it and knew they were done.

17. Friendship

Minis! Yes! There would be minis and friends, and Mayaa! She would have to invite Mayaa. Trisha was planning a picnic. She was bringing food and minis and possible some of her neighbors if should could convince them out.

But it had been raining… a little too much. Everything would get wet. She frowned and thought about it, maybe she would just have to invite everyone over to her room. It was big enough… maybe. Maybe not. But she would be able to have all her minis there if they did come.

She would have to clean first. Trisha got up and started to do just that, mind reeling. They could play spin the bottle and music and have lots of treats, she could order pizza, or something.

Would they like it?

Maybe she could invite AJ and Perto….. the thought sent a shiver down her spine and then… No, maybe not.

Not to her room, not this soon, a picnic would be ok, but not her room. She would just have to suffice with Aki and Mellow and Mayaa… that would be ok.

23. Music

A soft melody, classical edged its way through her room, the violin dancing across the notes as she read the book in front of her.

The music beckoned, and she had an urge to switch it to something fast paced and go racing through the halls, drums like hooves, so she could dream of being home a little while.

Instead she listened to the soft fluttering of moths, deep in the night, playing with clothing and eating it in a dark closet. The light footsteps of spiders scurrying across the floor, eerie and perfect for a day of homework; learning to creep in the dark crevices of the night. And she hated it. She was so restless, nevermind that Lamassu were supposed to be able to stand like stone for days, she found her hooves tapping and twisted this way and that as she lay on the ground, not quiet comfortable in human form, but it was more convenient for writing than doing it with her mouth.

She wanted upppp. The foggy day looked perfect to go prancing among the trees. No, she had to keep her grades up, or it would be back home with her.
Stoning her hooves she set herself to work once more.
