The battery on his phone would go out soon. Tobias looked at it worriedly as he stood on the beach, his eyes lifting from the screen to the ocean before him. It was one thing to take someone's dish washing shift in exchange for charging his phone, and something else entirely if he could do it himself.
Especially since the phone was his only source of light. The red runes on his weapon only served to put him on edge.
Tobias shook his head as he stripped down to his swim trunks, stashing his clothes away and out of sight. Or what he hoped to be; there was no telling on the island.
His weapon's totem form was pinned to the corner of his swim trunks, then tugged lightly to ensure it would stay in place. He moved in a serious of slow stretches, trying to remember everything new knew about swimming. The air tank from the Sun Division was primed and ready nearby. Would it be enough? He shoved the question violently from his mind. It wouldn't do him any good to dwell on questions he'd rather not find the answer to.
He couldn't delay any longer. The air tank was foisted up onto his back and secured, goggles slapped into place. Tobias lingered on the shore, letting the warm water splash over his feet before he forced himself forward and into the water.

Swimming was easier than he figured it to be. Instinct kicked in as Tobias dove down, belatedly wondering if he should have borrowed some flippers to go along with the tank he currently had on. It was starting to grow darker the further down he went and -- did something just move?

His weapon materialized over his hand, the bite sinking into the fear shield as opposed to his leg. It didn't hurt as much as it could have, he realized. s**t! Another set of tentacles reached up and grabbed him, pulling his arm down as more teeth sank into him. He barely nicked it!
But maybe if he tried aiming for a second --

Two rows of serrated teeth began to move back and forth across his skin. If he wasn't swimming and closed his eyes, Tobias figured it would have been some sort of massage. But with off-yellow eyes giving him the unsettling feeling of being nothing more than food, Tobias couldn't bring himself to close his eyes just yet.
Instead, he raised his shield-like weapon and bashed the creature's face with it in a back-handed motion, hoping that the spike on the shield would take out an eye.

A sound caught in the crossroads between a belch, retch, and screech erupted into a torrent of bubbles around him as the creature released him. Tobias tightened the grip on his weapon, grasping it with his right hand as he attempted to plunge one of the long horns into the creature and spear it while it lashed out at him in return with its tentacles.

It stopped moving.
Tobias kicked himself free of the tentacles before placing booth feet upon the creature, pushing and kicking it away to remove his weapon from it. He stared at the lifeless corpse with wide eyes, watching as it began to dissolve and leave him alone in the water. Even the dark blood that oozed out of the corpse was fading quickly.
He did it.
He did it.
His laughter was muffled by the breathing apparatus as he simply relished in the feeling of being alive.
A snap in his head reminded him that he couldn't linger for too long. He kept the weapon gripped in his hand as he continued swimming, using the bright shining runes on his weapon to guide him deeper down, down beneath Deus Ex.
There were caves here; this is where the stones were located right? Tobias kicked himself upon realizing he failed to grab a bag to carry them in. Maybe he could use his shield as a sort of awkward basket? He shook his head, eyes narrowed as he swam into the first cave.

With six stones threatening to weigh his swim trunks down, Tobias swam out of the cave and looked around. There was another cave nearby... What could the harm of it be in checking it out too? APPARENTLY A LOT OF HARM.
Tobias was thankful that the air tank prevented his shrill scream from being heard as he slashed and kicked out at the tentacles that tried to grab him.

At last free of the tentacles, Tobias scowled and opted to try a different cave. He could totally do this! He needed to stock up and give himself a supply.

This cave didn't look too ba- Quote: 8: The mermaids guarded several large, dark caves that are now open to explore. He managed to get out of there. His body was hurting, and he was NOT expecting to be nearly eaten. Tobias had had enough.
The trainee kicked off and headed for the surface, shaking off the trailing bits of saliva that clung to him tightly.

Tobias awoke later sprawled out on the beach, his weapon still wrapped around his palm. Slowly the death trainee sat up and removed the mask from his face, peeling off the goggles as he turned to stare out at the ocean. The last thing he could remember was swimming...
He looked down at himself, wincing at the sight of puncture wounds. He grit his teeth as he did his best to wash himself off in the ocean before moving to recover his clothes, dismayed upon finding some of his runestones were missing.
After a short stop at the infirmary, Tobias was uncomfortably sitting in the life labs holding the carving tools in his hands. He stared at the three stones in front of him, bitter about his loss.
He began carving the first stone.
