At first glance Mossflower could be described as a tomboy. She spent most of her time outdoors, didn't mind getting dirty and was always ready to defend her beliefs. But she was also more than happy indoors doing girly things like makeovers, whispering secrets, making jewellery and all the other fun things that happened during the perfect sleepover. She could hardly contain her enthusiasm as she waited for Star Spangled to arrive for the night and had rearranged all the pillows in the room five times already. It was going to be the best night ever! A pile of fresh baked cookies was waiting to be consumed, Yawn was snoring softly nearby and Mossflower was alternating between looking through her favourite picture book and staring at the door.

 Ding-dong!
Outside, Star Spangled could barely contain her excitement. She had her saddlebags packed with makeup (lovingly purchased by her mother) and foal-sized softballs (lovingly packed by her father), and she was ready to roll! She shuffled her hooves, wriggling excitedly on the doorstop.
"Don't overdo it, now" Fourseam Fastball said with a pat to her head, before fluttering to the nearest cloud to make sure someone opened the door. He couldn't cramp his daughter's style, after all. "You call if you want someone to pick you up sooner or get scared or anything, okay?"
"Da~ad!" Star Spangled colored and looked up at her father, huffing through her nose. "That won't happen. Mossflower is, like, the coolest.

The door was flung open in an excited rush and a breathless, 'hiiii!'Her rush to answer the door meant she had caught the tail end of the conversation, which involved her own 'coolness' (insert internal squealing) and the mention of Star's father, whom she could only presume she was hanging around somewhere. She followed Star's gaze up to the sky and waved, even if she hadn't spotted the Pegasus yet. "Hello Mr. Star Spangled!" She called and then grinned at her friend. "He can come in and meet my mum if he wants to."

Squeaking, Star Spangled turned back around to see Mossflower, her gem eyes brightening. "Hiiii!"
She turned around, looking up at her father. It was the polite thing to do, having parents meet one another, wasn't it? And Mom did always say to be polite, even if she did want to hurry up and have her fun time started already with Mossflower. "Dad! You wanna come in and meet Mossflower's mom?"
Fourseam Fastball slowly floated down from the cloud he was resting on, grinning down at the two girls. He landed effortlessly on his red hooves, and blew a strand of hair out of his face. "Well, considering my wife wanted to steal you out of your carriage while yer mama slept, I guess it's only right I say hello."
Star Spangled nodded, staying looking up at him.
"A FAST hello," Fast promised, still smiling. He turned to Mossflower. "Hi, Mossflower, I'm Fourseam Fastball. I hope you girls have fun tonight.

Mossflower giggled. Star’s dad was pretty cool. "Don’t worry sir, we’re going to have heaps of fun," she declared as she stepped aside to let them in and then trotted over to the prone form of the gently snoring Yawn. "Mama, hey mama," she flashed her visitors a quick ‘won’t be a moment’ smile and quickly turned back to Yawn, "wake up mama, you’ve gotta say hello."It took a few more minutes of cajoling and soft nudges before Yawn’s eyes finally cracked open. The sleepy Phony pushed herself into a somewhat upright position and smiled dreamily towards Fastball and Star, hair falling messily across her face until Mossflower reached up to push it aside for her. "… h-hello. It’s lovely to… to meet you."

Even though it wasn't muddy outside, Fast politely wiped his hooves on the doormat and bowed his head when he came into the house. He grinned politely and looked around the living room as Mossflower set about waking Yawn, and acted rather like he hadn't even noticed when she finally pulled herself up and cracked open her eyes. If her cutiemark was any indication, this was her talent. And boy, she seemed like she could be an Olympic medalist.
"Lovely to meet you, ma'am," Fast said charmingly, smiling. "Won't take up too much of yer time -- just wanted to say hello and thank you kindly for taking in my little girl tonight."
Star Spangled nodded brightly alongside him, beaming from ear to ear. "Yes, thank you very much for having me!"
Fast turned toward Star with a grin. "Now, don't you be trouble. You two gals have fun tonight."
Star squinted her eyes as her smile went wider. "We will!" To Mossflower, she lowered her voice to a whisper: "Your mama has such pretty hair!"

Yawn smiled back at Fastball, instantly charmed by his easy-going manner. "We’re delighted to have her over," she said, smothering a yawn. It was so nice to know her daughter had such good friends. "Next time… next time you should all come over for lunch…" Her eyelids drooped. Mossflower was grinning proudly. It was always nice when her mother managed to stay awake enough for a conversation. "Yeah, she does. I bet your mama has nice hair too. Come on, I’ll show you my room first."She watched as Yawn slumped back over onto her pillows and reached out to plump them up a bit. "Thanks for dropping Star off, Mr. Fastball. We're gonna go play now."

"Absolutely, we'd be right pleased to," said Fast politely, although it seemed his conversation partner had exited in favor of Dreamland. He cracked a grin and nodded at the girls, then let himself out with a wave of his hoof. "Have a good night, ladies." he said in parting.
"Bye, Dad!" Star said in return, although she had already left the scene in favor of following Mossflower. She smiled a bright smile as she did so, looking all around her friend's house. It was so different from her own! She had no idea what Mossflower's room would look like, but she was certain it wouldn't have baseball paraphernalia adorning every corner.
"Wowwww," said Star, pointing at one part of the wall as they made their way around. "Are those pictures of your family? It's even bigger than mine!"

"Yep," Mossflower stopped briefly so they could admire the collections of photos. "That's my elder siblings there and those are all my cousins. Knots and her kids are always busy, but Lullaby comes over a lot to make up for it." There was nothing better than having a house full of family. Her room, once they'd made there was inside, was just as green as Mossflower. There was a forest mural on one wall, complete with butterflies, bunnies and other animals frolicking happily. Two beds took up much of the space, though one corner had been curtained off. "That's where I look after the sick animals I take in," Mossflower explained. "I don't have any at the moment though." She looked around her room, eyed the pile of colouring books and toy box ands then asked, suddenly shy, "what would you like to do first?"

"Wow!" exclaimed Star, looking from one photograph to the other. They all looked so happy, and were all so pretty! She hoped one day she and her siblings would all grow up and have their own families and still remain as close as Mossflower's family seemed to be. "That's really awesome... my family's really tight-knit, too. It's the best."
She followed the filly into the other room, where her gem-eyes widened like saucers. So green, and so artistic! "I love your mural! And, oh gosh, you can take care of animals?! That's so cool! Did you learn from your parents, or do you just... know?"
Flopping down on the ground, she took a look at Mossflower's coloring books. "Oh, ah... coloring? Seeing your mural makes me feel really artistic."

Mossflower blushed happily. "Yeah, my brother Lullaby drew the mural for me and my sister. As for the animals, I guess I kinda, learnt bits and pieces from everywhere. After a bought my first baby bird home, my dad and I looked up how to take care of it. Then I read every book I could find until I could help any animal I found." Now it came to her as easily as breathing. "Okay!" The green filly grabbed the colouring books and pencils, then made herself comfortable next to Star Spangled. Late night eventually found the two tucked into bed. They’d coloured, talked, played a board game with Mossflower’s brother, had pumpkin soup for dinner and watched cartoons, but now they were curled up together, surrounded by pillows and blankets. But Mossflower couldn’t quite sleep yet and she wriggled a bit closer to whisper, "hey, are we best friends?"

Star Spangled opened one shiny gem eye as Mossflower came closer, and she nodded into her pillow with some authority. She liked Mossflower oodles and bucketsfull, and the awesome-amazing-supercool-uberfun time she'd had with her tonight just cemented it.
"Oh yes," she said, her voice soft but not-quite-sleepy. She smiled over at her friend, putting her hoof over her's. "For sure, we are. I think you're so nice and fun, and I think I could tell you all my secrets and know for sure you'd never tell the whole school or leave me alone to go hang out with the Wealthybuckets foals or anything."

This was the moment. That special moment you always saw in movies when two girls promised their undying friendship. "I would never-ever tell your secrets or leave you for some other foals or do anything to hurt you ever," Mossflower replied in an earnest whisper. "In fact, I’ll tell you my biggest secret now."She waited, almost holding her breath to give the moment that extra something. "I’m going to learn how to be a warrior," she said finally. "Rose Knight is going to teach me and she is so amazing. I bet she already has a girlfriend or boyfriend or something, but still, she’s going to teach me how to fight. I haven’t told my family yet, but I want you to know."

Star Spangled gasped, then hid her mouth under her hooves.
"A warrior" she said in an awed voice, her gem eyes sparking in the darkness even more than usual. The timbre of her voice remained steady, and there was wonder in her to r as she continued. "Are you gonna be a warrior for animals? Stop poachers and that kind of thing? Oh, Mossflower, you're going to be so amazing! I've never met Rose Knight, but I'm sure she's wonderful."
She paused then, turning something over on her head. A thought occurred to her, and she gulped.
"Just… will you promise me you'll be safe? And when you're off warrior-ing, you won't forget about your best friend at home playing baseball?"

"Yeah, I’m going to help save all the animals. Nobody will dare hurt them when they know I’m around!" She snuggled that little bit closer with a happy sigh. "I’ll take you to meet her, she’s so lovely."Mossflower giggled softly. "Oh no, I would never. I know you’ll grow up amazing too, so we have to promise to be best friends forever and never forget each other."
