Earlier in the week I noticed there was a decent amount of us talking about Pokemon. So I figured like Best/worst, I have a weekly talk about something Pokemon. It could be a Pokemon or it could be a character or something completely different. Just like Best/Worst this will be updated on Sundays.
Anyway the first topic I want to talk about is the Kanto Starters. Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. I would like to see what you guys think about them before I say what I want to about them.

Question about this topic: Do we have to put which generation or game series for the Pokemon? Because each game/generation have different stats or moves for the same Pokemon. Like how Generation V Bulbasaur has more moves than the Generation I Bulbasaur by just leveling alone without TM/HM and breeding. sweatdrop

But I am leaving it this open because some people haven't played as much as others. I know very few has played everyone generation of Pokemon like I have.

This is a fun idea. I know a bit of the pokemon games, but it's the ones like the sinnoh region, the B/W games, and I still haven't gotten Pokemon X and Y. I've wanted to check out Fire Red and Leaf Green sometime as well. The only new game I had a chance to play was the Heartgold remake on the ds.(It was quite awhile ago since that came out huh?) Oh and the pokemon spin off titles like mystery dungeon and stuff like that. But I'd like to discuss what I can and still participate in this. So the Kanto starters.. I am rather fond of them. Outside of never having played the remakes on the gba, for which I have heard they are very good games! I have no been able to get those starters in the other games, so I don't know how different they would be? But still they all hold a special place in my heart. So first up is Charmander and I yeah I'd be lying if I said charmander wasn't cute. It's a fire lizard that lives as long as its tail is lit aflame. But then it evolves into Charmeleon and then it's last stage is Charizard. As a young kid, I actually thought Charizard was awesome. But as time went by, I found him to be pretty overrated. And I don't think he's nearly as great as most people make him out to be. Truth be told, I think I liked Charizard in the anime. It had kind of the not obeying it's master thing going for it there. But if you pick him in the Generation 1 games, he'll generally have a tougher time with the earlier gyms. Mostly because they're obviously his elemental weakness types. Brock has Rock/Ground pokemon, and while Misty has water pokemon. It's not until Lt. Surge where things start getting a little bit better. Charmander starts off with is Scratch and Growl, but then eventually it'll learn fire moves like ember, flamethrower, and Fire Spin as it grows and evolves into it's bigger forms. Slash and bite are both pretty decent normal moves it can learn. Rage is I guess alright... So I'm kind of neutral on Charmander really. I do still kind of like it, but I don't think it's that great. So Bulbasaur is the leaf starter, and it's the one I first picked in red version. I really like Bulbasaur. Both in the anime and in the game. Though, It had more of a tough attitude personality in the anime. It's a dinosaur with a bulb on its back which I do think is a pretty neat idea. It's next evolution stages are Ivysaur followed by Venusaur as the final one. I like that every time it evolves, the bulb grows as it gets bigger and eventually it becomes a gigantic flower once it hits the venusaur evolution stage. In terms of move sets, it start off with tackle and growl which may not seem that great. But it'll focus more on grass type moves like vine whip, razor leaf, poison powder and sleep powder, and it's last move solarbeam which can be a very powerful move. So if you go with Bulbasaur, you'll pretty much have an easier time with the first few gyms. The last starter to mention is Squirtle. First thing I want to say is DEM SHADES. With all silliness aside, Squirtle is a pretty cool water starter though. It's a turtle that squirts out water as its attack as Squirtle and Wartortle. But eventually once it evolves into blastoise, It gets a freaking water cannon inside its shell! It starts off with tackle and tail whip, if you decide to pick him. It'll learn water moves like bubble, water gun, and hydro pump. Bite is a good move as always, and it even learns skull bash if I remember right? Squirtle has an advantage over the first gym for sure. With misty, it'll have a little trouble taking on starmie without an electric or grass type to help. Lt. Surge and Erika can both be quite tough against it as well. This is what comes to mind for the gen 1 starters. I do wish I could comment on the leaf green/fire red versions. But again, I haven't played them... sweatdrop

Ninja Ryu11 But then it evolves into Charmeleon and then it's last stage is Charizard. As a young kid, I actually thought Charizard was awesome. But as time went by, I found him to be pretty overrated. And I don't think he's nearly as great as most people make him out to be.. Popularity pays off. Charizard got two mega-evolutions, and BOTH of them put the others to shame in different contexts competitively. Mega Charizard Y DOMINATES VGC and Doubles play. And Mega Charizard X apparently does really well for itself as a wall breaker. If you list any other generation in the series, I can pick out a favorite. Kanto is the exception because I honestly am attached to all three of them. They're my childhood. They're the originals. They're what everyone in grade school had on their cartridges. I loved watching them on the anime (and still do, occasionally; when Ash's Charizard showed up in the Unova era it was EPIC), and appreciate that they've been a part of my life just by extension of how old the series is at this point for something like three fourths of my lifetime so far. I think they're the best representation of having a balanced selection of starters where you can't say one is better than the others in enough areas to make a choice "superior" - that's both because of the starters but also because of the composition of the Kanto games and other things. Still, it's rare for any generation to have truly balanced out starters. I picked Bulbasaur in Y most recently, but not because I favor it over the other two. Rather, two of my closest friends and myself were deciding our starters long before the games came out to have the entire trios covered. I DEMANDED Fennekin because I require the most fabulous option and so I accepted letting them pick their Kanto starters first and got Bulba. I don't feel the need to discuss them competitively in-depth because that's for other websites and I wouldn't be bringing forth any original ideas to the table with them (I'll simply mention that MegaZard Y+Chlorophyll Venusaur is a pretty common and effective pair in VGC/doubles and I'm a fan of it) I'll just point out quirks about them that I appreciate. Bulbasaur is still the only starter pokemon with a dual-typing, which is awesome. And now that Poison got an added advantage over Fairy, here's hoping it maintains two full generations in OU. 'Saur is also notably the first of the three to have reached OU status on Smogon, if you're into that, with it's hidden ability last year during the weather wars. In Kanto, picking Charmander means NOT having to pick up a Pidgey/other underwhelming Normal/Flying type to have something to Fly on later on, which is super convenient. Whenever I go back and play LeafGreen briskly, I typically pick Charmander for this reason. A lot of people think MegaZard X is cooler looking, and all I have to say to them is "Shiny MegaZard Y. Bye Felicia." It is interesting that Squirtle's movepool was the most edited of the three in the transition to Gen VI to provide it with moves that benefit its mega evolution's ability. Ain't no other way this thing was getting goodies like Aura Sphere. Also, all of the Kanto starters share an Egg Group, so you can breed them with each other.

Personally I think thinking Charizard is overrated, is overrated. If you think a pokemon is cool, then it's cool. I guess the real question is what about Charizard makes you think that it doesn't deserve its popularity?

I'm going to literally interpret this discussion topic and speak only about Charmander, Bulbasaur, and Squirtle. If you look at the perspective of movesets, they have gotten progressively better since Generation 1. Consider Bulbasaur whose best move was Solarbeam. Nowadays, he can learn better moves that can either be attack of special attack. Bulbasaur made it easy for the first couple gyms for the original game (Rock and Water). He was also the only starter that started out as a dual type (Grass/Poison) Squirtle was a well balanced and was good for the first gym. Even back in the day he had good water moves and was always helpful because he can learn the water HMs and use them well. He just seems like a solid choice even in his further evolutions. Charmander made the first two gyms tough. But he learns good moves and has a good balance of attack (or special attack) and speed. With the definition of special attack and attack being sorted by specific moves instead of just type, Charmander was also able to run a good Attack set of moves. All in all, they were a good bunch of starters and you couldn't go wrong with your choice.

Squirtle. SQUIRTLE ALL THE DAMN WAY--
Ffff, no. Charmander, dammit.
STFU. Anyway, uh, I guess we made our choices obvious? xD Of course, this is only considering Red/Blue, with the addition of Yellow, if that counts, PIKACHU, FTW. Because then you get the other three and pretty much have a decent set right there.
...I agree with her on that issue, at least. >_>
Well, anyway. My choice comes down to something really amusing and probably stupid: I adored Misty and her whole "water type only" approach and I have always affiliated to water more than any other element and so, for me, my approach was "CATCH ANY AND ALL WATER AND ICE TYPES FTW". ...This has since changed, but my adoration for water and ice types is still really strong.
Fire is the element that draws me, guilty as charged. This is totally ironic, all things considered when you look at both Mand's and my personalities, you'd think they'd be switched, but, not at all. She loves water, even if her actual personality is more like fire, and my personality is more like water, but I like fire. I'm not a pyro, however. Not like Melethia and Mandi in terms of hardcore, at least, lol. But yeah, I like fire types.

OH! In that case I chose Froakie. I just thought frogs were pretty cool~
And plus it becomes a ninja frog, so that's extra points why I went with it. XD
