The winter chill was something Remarque had still not come to appreciate, and it was easier now than any time of the year to convince himself to stay warm, inside. Obligation prevented him from succumbing, but he wasn't really taking tonight seriously. He could have been out trying to drain energy, or pick fights, or try to convince White Moon senshi to join the Dark Mirror Court. Instead, he was meandering through the city, taking his time to soak it in.

For all intents and purposes, he was just taking a walk. There had been no youma, no knights or negaversers or senshi of any kind.

But there was something.

And he couldn't entirely put his finger on just what it was. So he sought it out.

He moved quickly, not wanting to lose track of it, though not with such haste that he seemed particularly rushed. He didn't have the motivation to be rushed in winter.

When he was near to the energy signature, the Eternal senshi looked around. He was confident that he should have been right on top of it, but there was no great monster, no visible oddity. Just an aura he had never felt before, and no one where he could see.

For a few seconds he lingered, as though expecting someone to just jump out. Standing around wasn't doing anything for him, and had his curiosity not been so nagging he might have just left. Instead, he spoke into the emptiness, hoping to draw out a voice so he could know exactly what he was dealing with. "You have a distinct aura. I don't think we've met before. Do you plan on hiding or are we going to exchange names like civilized people?"

"I'm not hiding," A humanoid figure with cat ears chirped as she hopped to a stiff standing position behind him, hands woven behind her back. He had certainly stood staring into the space long enough to allow a hunting creature to creep around freely.

Her expression was a vapid brand of pleasant, in spite of the way the company of dark mirror senshi made her skin crawl and her stomach twist.

"Do people usually hide from you? It might be the butt wings," She pointed out as her tail flicked back and forth. She was calculating, already searching for a way to rank him on a scale of danger to benignity and trying to determine how precarious her name was in the modern dark mirror court.

Orpheus had known it. But when he mentioned it to Ares after the Surrounding, she covered it up. How well had it been covered up? Whether Zirconia's soul was active or dormant, the name Zirconia carried certain connotations to it and was the only disguise Zia really had when in any powered form.

"If I'm remembering my social etiquette right I think you get a name by giving a name. Something to consider if you were looking for an exchange, blondie."

Remarque's gaze moved to the girl. He seemed as curious as ever—and certainly should have been; he had yet to meet a cat in any form other than their four-legged one. Zirconia was a novelty to him, in more ways than one, though he was unwilling to divulge how little information he was going into this conversation with.

"Oh, you don't like the wings?" he asked, with faint, mock hurt. "What a pity. I worked so hard to get them, too."

He lingered where he stood, allowing her to move as she please without making any movements of his own. "Though, I suppose I should at least be please with your manners. The lack of them out here is almost painful." Despite his love of grandeur titles, he offered a simple introduction; "I am Remarque. And you are…?"

"A cat, duh," Was the smart a** response he got back.

While she was normally free with her introductions, she was notably more skittish and reacted to his name with clear recognition. That had several mutual acquaintances, apparently.

"The wings are a put off. Eternals are tricky business. Almost as tricky as royalty."

She bounced back and rolled on her heels in a carefree lean, subtly putting some space between then and casually, just casually, looking around. Planning escape routes. Precautions were necessary when faced with one of two people in the universe with the power to kill your very soul to make way for a new one. Zirconia might've waffled on corruption, but Zia saw it as a danger to her very existence and was very much part of camp Stay-Alive.

"What about your manners? I know you like to talk your way into things, but you never know if those types respond to rejection by dragging the stubborn through mirrorspace, kicking and screaming."

A cat, of course. His favorite.

Remarque followed her with his eyes and an expression that did portrayed little more than mild interest—and mild annoyance.

Eternals, royals. Almost an offhanded comment. Dragging people through mirrorspace? Something he had done rarely enough that he could still remember the faces of all those he'd tugged through.

He wondered which one she knew.

Remarque crossed his arms over his chest and kept his gaze fixated on her. He might have brushed off her putting distance between them as simply having too much energy, though that her attention was not entirely focused on him made him wonder how long he'd have her for, and if she was trying to find a reason to bolt. He wasn't intent to give her one; he kept his distance and took a more relaxed stance. "And what else do you know?"

Oh, ego.

Zia's eternal fatal flaw was pride in her knowledge and various strings of information she kept tugging along through this stupid, foreign war. Asking what she knew was the unfortunate correct answer to switch her from objectively cautious to showboaty and smug as her glances around became one, singular focus on his figure.

Bare shoulders rolled in a playful shrug.

"Lots of things. How's Avior doing? Getting your soul ripped out and replaced by a mirror parasite sounds rough, but I'm sure the memories are kept just so to encourage maximum domestication. Is it weird, making them when you're one yourself?"

Okay that wasn't meant to be so much of an insult as incredibly genuine curiosity. Without a real parallel at the helm they were like dolls running the toy factory in her eyes.

In a way she felt needed no explaining, given her very distinct mirror aura, she made a heart with her forefingers and thumbs and held it over the eye at her neck, and how the crescent moon scar underneath almost made it a match to the DMC symbol.

"I know everything, mostly. Whose cat do you think I am?"

Remarque blinked, forced a smile, and then spoke fluidly, as if speaking to an old friend; "Avior is doing fine, thank you. I'll pass along your concerns. He's been an absolute delight since joining us. Are you jealous?" he prompted, perhaps trying to provoke her. "Did you want him for yourself or something? I'm so sorry if I've deprived you of the opportunity," he said with false sympathy. "Though, if you two were close, I'd be happy to invite you to join us, if that would make you feel any better? Though, I suppose Avior has the benefit of remembering you, so in a way, it's like you never lost him at all, isn't it?"

He was far more content to talk about Avior; Avior he knew and understood. Her? She was a cat, and certainly a strange one. Her aura alone would have been enough to keep his interest, though the way she hinted at things held his attention just as much.

"I'll be honest, though. I have no clue who you are. Are you important, should I know you?" he asked with forced boredom; he certainly took offense at the accusation of parasites and domestication, though she had to know something about the Dark Mirror Court if she could talk about them like that.

The preening ceased, and the guardian proceeded to stand there looking at him with patronizing disappointment before she dropped her hands from the framing gesture.

"Please. No one on any side wanted Avior, he's leftovers. Like, well, your entire court. In fact one of my Negaversers gave him a broken arm as a parting gift. His only significance is he's your first publicly known corruption, Princeling."

But if the similarity of the eye decor she sported and specifically pointed out for him, even combined with the branding Ares left her immediately beneath it wasn't enough, she had already jumped to the assumption this meeting was disappointing and concluded.

"God, you are a coalition of vapid airheads," She droned, subconsciously bringing back Bischofite's version of court descriptors from an old conversation. "I heard you were Leto's foil in the scheme of things, this entire conversation is severely disappointing. It's my own fault, I should've known better. Ares would never leave someone smarter than her in charge. That would be stupid; She wants the old courts she abandons to burn away, not thrive."

She threw up her hands in genuine frustration and shifted down to her fully feline form to start trotting off.

In some ways, Remarque did not know how to reply to the cat. It didn't seem like she was up for much conversation, and what had transpired felt more one-sided than anything.

And he still didn't know anything about her or what she was prattling about.

Her haughtiness was as amusing as it was annoying and he scoffed when she threw her hands up.

"Tell yourself whatever you need to sleep at night, Cat. But I think you're just clinging to the thinnest threads of an argument you don't have the evidence to back up. I don't care if you knew Ares, or if you think you know how she worked. In case you haven't noticed, she's out of the picture. And if you think knowing her is your claim to fame? You deserve to be disappointed."

If the cat was leaving, so was he.

He turned away indifferently. "I guess without Ares, you're not as important as you think you are."

“Youma must think the Rift is a small kingdom and the outer world is their grand, unexplored space,” Was the cat’s response to Remarque’s assumptions regarding Ares’ importance. “There is plenty of evidence not shared with the likes of you, little Princeling of the Third Failed Court,” She waved him off and shifted on hip, her back still to him as he started walking away.

“So keep your amateur mirror using hands off me and mine and I won’t shatter the illusion of the bigger and better things from which you were birthed. And that includes Orpheus.”

Orpheus' name was not something Remarque expected to hear; an anger burned within him but he did little more than shrug. Whatever Orpheus was up to, he was going to get himself killed. Remarque was starting to wonder if it wouldn't be for the best, if he was conspiring with this creature. But perhaps it would explain his insufferable attitude.

"I think if you could shatter anything you would have, Cat. You talk a big talk, but it's not big enough. Maybe next time you can Enlighten me on this illusion I've been subjected to."

Maybe.

Except even with evidence in his face, Remarque was stubborn. He questioned much about his existence and purpose, but he had never met anyone with the answers he sought. So he'd just been making his own.

Though, if this cat wasn't going to give him the answers he wanted, apparently he could always go to Orpheus.

He had been meaning to check in on the senshi, after all.

Now seemed like as good a time as any.
