The Coliseum
User Image

The coliseum is an oval (ellipse) with the outer measurements as follows: Length: 189 meters (615 ft) Width: 156 meters (510 ft) Height: 48 meters (157 ft). The inner measurements (arena area) Length: 88 meters (287 ft) Width: 56 meters (180 ft) Height: 4.6 meters (15 ft). Modeled akin to the coliseum in Rome, Italy. The interior of the arena is a simple pit of packed dirt, the thousands of seats available for many to view the happenings within. The arena itself is protected on the walls closing it in with runes, keeping the audience from potential danger of stray attacks and a wide range of damage. These runes also keep the foundation of the arena from being all but obliterated.

The Baron Lord Kelvin stood framed against the rear of the entrance tunnel, backlit by the spilling floodlight behind. A soft breeze whipped about his person, throwing billows of fabric against his legs as a splendidly long cloak, clasped about his nape, responded eagerly, as if itching for battle. Hands planted firmly upon a sturdy belt of black leather with silver clasps, wrapped snugly into a pair of leather gloves, twitched their fingers nervously, clearly awaiting something.

A large, black, wide-brimmed hat of felt and velvet, set with an ostentatious red plume, scraped the low ceiling, and obscured his face in shadow. Booted feet shifted slightly in the mild summer evening heat. It was much as he'd remembered it, the Baron reflected. Perhaps, back then, it wasn't so tricked out, though... he hedged, and smiled to himself.

Because this replica of the Roman Colosseum had a key feature the original had not; a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system, a feature he had discovered soon after being informed of his upcoming fight whilst still nursing the bruises from the barfight earlier in the day. Experimentally, he stretched his calves... they still twinged a bit, but were otherwise fine.

Perfect.

There was an audible snap! as a spotlight illuminating the arena went out. A sudden hushed gasp rippled through the audience. Then another, and another went, the sound of extinguishing lights crisply resounding a staccato salute in the warm air... and then there was silence.

It was precisely then, that the sky opened, and the BASS dropped.

The packed earth shuddered, and each beat brought this time-lost noble forward, boots striding forward in exact rhythym, little wisps of dust rising from the packed earth of the arena. Mysterious as he was, he paused for effect at the entrance, heel tapping out the measures as the stadium roared around him. Fog machines scattered a bewildering array of neon-spectrum lasers across, the strobe lighting this man in technicolor flashes, silver and steel flashing in response like so many glittering coins.

Then, as if on cue, he whirled about, cloak whipping around him, right foot forward, upraised on toe, head tilted forward, a hand reaching up to firmly grasp the rim as if deep in thought... and he glid into the arena.

The colosseum exploded.

Off flew the hat, and the cape, fluttering to the ground painfully slowly... and revealed beneath was a beaming dandy of a man, his garishly extravagant renaissance clothing oddly fitting the entire spectacle. Gold, silver, platinum shone in clasps, buckles, buttons... in the very threads that wove his velvet pants and silken vest-tunic. White cotton blossomed in his wide sleeves, buffed leather lamellar pulling the outfit together with a muted sheen.

He bowed deeply to the audience, and as he straightened, the final beat died away, the floodlights returning with a thunderous snap of sound, nearly drowned by the sea of noise from the stands themselves.

Jace Arcanis

User Image

Jace had spent the few minutes before the beginning of the round kneeling in a meditative posture. He bore witness as the gates rose to his opponents flashy entrance. Exhaling Jace rose from the kneel with a suprising fluidity for a man in armor, even lacquered leather. Step by step and his armor rustled, the sound an alien mimicry of a cicada like beetle. The black lacquered armor, trade mark of the samurai warriors gleamed as the lights finally came back to full brightness. Upon his belt, two blades dangled in sheathes the color of oceanic blue. Thus came the Baron's opponent, one Jace Arcanis.

The master mage had sharp blue eyes, his skin pale compared to the laminated black armor. In his right hand a short wooden, recurve short bow. On his right hip, a quiver of twenty arrows, the standard fare for an archer. For all appearance, Jace was a samurai, a contemporary of the Baron in terms of time that he might have appeared to be from. Around his feet, the glimmer of aether, coiling around his body shone in flickering tendrils.

The aether passed in and out of his body in coronal flares. Step by step, came the arch mage his left hand resting on the shorter hilt of the wakizashi sitting over his left hip. He let silence, and stillness illuminate his entrance as he strode forward. He chose not to have any fanfare, no entrance music, no fire works or light shows. Jace came for a purpose, to fight, to win, if he put up a good show, then excellent, if not then so be it.

Coolly, the Baron eyed his silent opponent from across the arena, with the air of one distinctly unimpressed. It was a rather persistently annoying trait common to warriors of the East that they spoke rarely and smiled approximately never. In truth, he had never met so joyless a group as they, and part of him wondered if the samurai was just trying to ride in on the coattails of the Baron's entrance or was really just that much of an uninspired hardass.

Subtly he shrugged, noting the swirling of arcane magic that lit the air about the man even from this distance of over a football field away. Not only a samurai, then, but also a mage of some sort. Interesting. Nodding to nobody in particular, the Lord Kelvin began to stride forward across the arena at a casual pace, right hand dipping down to slowly withdraw an ornate-hilted rapier from it's scabbard, the fine Damascus steel catching the floodlights of the stands in a dazzling flash.

Momentarily, the Baron halted, bringing the weapon before him, and pointing it skyward with the grip level with his mouth, saluted his opponent solemnly, before whipping it back down with a flourish and an exaggerated bow. "With whom do I have the honor of dueling today?" he called boldly, though Kelvin wasn't expecting an answer... too many fighters in this sport favored simple, unadulterated murder over the thrill of the fight, and what need had a victim of knowing the name of his killer?

From thence he again began to advance at the same leisurely pace, having covered at most twenty feet so far, rapier held loosely in his right hand, point facing off to the side. If the opponent was truly a mage, attempting to rapidly close the gap would avail him little at this range, it was better to approach carefully and well-prepared.

Honor Amongst Men – This elaborate renaissance era-weapon is a masterpiece of craftsmanship. It is a bladed rapier some 3.3 feet in length, weighing about 2.5 pounds. The grip is wrapped in soft, slip-resistant leather, and is protected by an elaborate Italian-style basket hilt, plated in silver and platinum filigree. The blade tapers gradually to a wickedly sharp, hardened, diamond-shaped point that can easily split even bone with a solid thrust. The length is decently flexible, and edged on both sides, though not sharp enough to easily cut through anything more than very thin leather or cloth (Repeated cuts in the same area will still eventually cut through even heavy leather armor though). It is forged of the finest Damascus steel, giving it high strength, fair flexibility, and a slightly lower weight than traditional steel. It is housed in an exquisite, hardened leather scabbard that is reinforced at the tip and along the length, providing protection to the blade from rust and dulling, as well as doubling as a weapon in its own right in dire straits.

Jace exhaled as his opponent came forward full of fluff and bravado. This was nothing new to the samurai, Kelvin wasnt the first fighter he had come across with definitive swagger. Jace gave an ever so slight smile focusing his attention briefly on the battle field. It snapped back to the other fighter as he called out for a name. Jace chuckled out loud, at least the man wasnt an outright monster. To many fighters were in it for the blood, not for the sport. Some of the best, had long since lost their humanity to the violence.

“Jace, Jace Arcanis, what about yourself?”

The words called back across the distance, a little more than two thirds of a football field. The mage was readying himself and a spell to make things more interesting for the remainder of the fight. His opponent would be able to tell as the aether grew more dense flowing around his body. Jace would wait where he had come to a stop, pulling the bow over his shoulder and out of the way. It was unlikely to be an asset in this fight but he wanted it close at hand. His right hand came back to rest on the sheathe of his longer katana, thumb resting under the guard, his left hand shifted to the hilt into a classic quick draw set up.

"The Second Baron Kelvin, Lord of Torrance in Dunbartonshire, England. A pleasure, Arcanis-san." came the cultured and sonorous reply. Having now passed the center of the arena a ways, the nobleman paused in his step, and stood calmly, eyeing the ever-increasing build-up of arcane energy before him. Dust swirled around his boots, and clung to the felt exterior stubbornly, even as Kelvin leaned his head back slightly, stretching, and feeling the radiating heat of the sand wash over him. Small beads of sweat formed on his brow and neck under the spotlights, but he didn't pay it much heed, instead using this pause to calm his hammering heart.

With a small sigh, he spoke up again. "Will you not come forth to do battle in the arena proper? It is hard to see you there from the stands! Let us dance with steel here in the center so all may enjoy it!" he cried, gesturing vaguely with his left at the now-quieting stands all around. Then he fell silent, his bright eyes focused squarely on the warrior of the East, the Baron's own breathing becoming more steady as he tapped into his Latent Arcana, the very fabric of reality itself, to ground him more firmly in the present.

Outwardly, this process had little tell, but a harmonious stillness settled over the boisterous man that definitely was a clear contrast to his earlier manner. Rapier still at his side, and left hand grasping his belt firmly, he continued to wait patiently for battle. The audience had come to see sport, not a barbaric melee.

Jace Arcanis

Aether Charges Gained: 1
Aether Charges Aligned: 1 charge to purple

Jace came forward now satisfied with the amount of energy that he had gathered. The tempo of his foot falls came slow and measured. His breathing was still as he worked his way across the intervening half of the arena. A clear clever glint played out in his eyes as he got closer. As he moved, he began to channel the energy into the blade at his right hip. Arcana flared to life as the aether was given shape by a pure act of will. The energy from which all magic was derived funneled in a way that was pure imagination.

The aether flowed red and purple down his arm, like threads of billowing power. The power flowed down spiraling into the blade between the guard and the hilt. Whatever power he had infused the weapon would carry weight, though remain unidentifiable for the moment. Jace was never one to overplay his own hand, so he had designed his sword and sheathe to each act as channel and container respectively.

With a respect drawn from prior experience, Jace drew into the last few meters of contact weary of the rapier. The blade was light, dangerous, deceptively sharp and strong, and faster than one could reasonably expect.

The classic staredown was appropriate for what was rapidly promising to become an iaijutsu duel, if the samurai's readiness upon his blade was any indication.

Black-leather-clad hand twitching with impatience upon his left hip, Kelvin's face slowly broke into a smile as Jace began to near, as he finally raised his rapier to a loose readiness. Right arm relaxed, with the elbow bent and point forward and up, near his body, and his right foot shoulder-width forward, presenting his torso at an oblique angle, extending both the reach of his arm and minimizing the target to the opponent. His foe had answered the challenge, and the Lord of Torrance fully intended to give him a fight to remember.

Twenty-five paces now, and closing. The rapier pressed forward slightly, warding, ready for action, interposing a comfortable four and a half feet of maneuvering room from whence attack and defense were equally viable.

Twenty paces. The Baron's left thumb twitched visibly, as if tensing in anticipation, fingers curling reflexively.

Fifteen paces....

... and his left arm rose, outstretched, in a fluid motion, betraying for a moment the sheen of varnished oak and the glint of steel in the glaring spotlights, before pointing squarely at the oncoming warrior, revealing in it's grasp a beautiful piece of Italian engineering, courtesy of expert Venetian gunsmiths.

He pulled the trigger.

Smoke and fire blossomed in a deafening report, partially obscuring the Baron as the thunderous discharge echoed sharply across the arena... but the gift the barrel had borne was already well on it's way to the surprise recipient by the time the plume had formed.

A gift of death, in the shape of a lead ball hurtling forward at eight hundred feet per second.

Gentle Reprimand – Anything but gentle, this highly-sophisticated wheel-lock pistol is a beautifully ornate and frighteningly effective weapon. The smooth-bore barrel is capable of firing both lead balls as well as special fire charges. This slightly modified, customized version houses enough powder and ammunition to fire two shots before needing to be reloaded. The weapon has very low muzzle velocity and generates an obscene amount of smoke and noise, easily deafening those near it when it discharges. The black powder inside is explosive, but crude, causing the weapon to be highly inaccurate past fifteen feet, and is avoidable even within this range if the victim can react before the dog hammer strikes, as there is a slight pause between the pulling of the trigger and the actual discharge of the weapon in order to let the friction wheel spin up. When firing the special fire charges, it projects a five-foot narrow cone of searing flame from the barrel instead of a normal lead shot. Kelvin carries two additional shot of each type and powder for the pistol in a small waterproof pouch on his belt, but generally does not bother to reload mid-battle as it takes well over a minute to do so. The pistol is 12 inches long, and weighs about 1.5 pounds.

Jace Arcanis

User Image
Aether Charges Gained: 1
Aether Charges Aligned: 2 charges to red

Jace coiled lashing out with one hand as he saw the pistol rising in to line with his body. All of his muscles tensed with fifteen feet between them, it was time to move. That gesture coupled with an act of will, a desire, and the unleashing of two charges of red aether would create a physical impediment. Jace saw an opportunity. The barrier stitched together in the blink of an eye as smoke puffed from the barrel and the projectile rocketed forward. The bullet or pellets, or ball, respectively would slam into a barrier of force created on an angle between the two fighters.

The projectile would tumble out of line dented and destroyed in terms of usefulness. The impact would shatter the veil of force creating quickly fading shards of physically manifested energy. The samurai would burst through that veil moving into an unrelenting charge. At the last second before the two were within striking range the samurai would throw his momentum into a forward drawing slash. During the maneuver he would throw his left foot forward into a final pivotal step, draw his blade with his left hand from the sheathe and whip it through a horizontal arc aimed at striking the rapier out of its defensive imposition.

Drawing the blade triggered a reflexive act of will prepared in the previous round and unleashed four more charges of aether, two red, and two purple. Lightning would coat the blade voltaic and red in color. The energy would transfer in part to the rapier unless some mystical or design feature prevented such transfer. If the samurai successfully struck the rapier aside a rotation of his wrist, and the joining of his right hand to the hilt would allow for a short hard chop, coupled with a skipping step forward to bring him into the blades most devastating range.

Aether Charges:
Charges Expended: Two charges red expended. Two Charges Red and Two Charges Purple.
Active Effects: Veil of Force: With an act of will and a short hard gesture, Jace erects a wall of force, nearly invisible except that it traps and refracts light in the same way as a prism. Meant to deflect strong forces, such as the impact of a fire arm, or a cannon, the effect is instant, but lasts no longer than it takes to deflect the force it was conjured to deal with.

Unsheathing of lightning: Two red charges, Coupled with 2 purple charges, create an effect of moderate lightning damage bound to the blade for five posts. Every attack made with the blade is coated with a red lightning, the affects of which will vary from person to person, but could include stunning, numbness or burns.

That sporting half-smile never left the Baron's face, his downy mustache twitching in amusement as the eastern warrior surged towards him through the remains of his magically manifested barrier, despite the apparent failure of the wheellock to do any damage. It didn't matter, though, really... the crowd had loved it, and even now he could hear the stamping of feet and roar of approval at that sudden, flashy turn of events.

Fortunately, he had fired from his rear foot and not his leading right, ensuring that his balance remained unhindered by his response. That first, decisive slash from the electrified katana sliced forward....

... and met nothing but air, as the nobleman expertly dipped the tip of his blade under the samurai's arc with naught but a small leftward flick of the wrist, in a partial sixte, that pistoned forward in a seamless transition as his arm then straightened briefly, placing the diamond point of the blade squarely in line with the man's teeth. The strike was swift, short, and exploited the full potential of the weapon's length, using Jace's own lunging charge to close the remaining inches between point and victim.

But as soon as the riposte had been delivered, Kelvin was already retreating along with his rebounding arm, touch or not. The elegance of the fencing master was most evident in footwork, and the Baron was no slouch. Rear foot retreating with the lead foot in tow, he disengaged from the melee and any follow-up with two quick, measured steps in the warm sand, returning the rapier to an en garde position. His left arm dangled the now-obvious firearm loosely at his side, letting the barrel cool as the acrid smell of black powder slowly wafted across their nostrils.

"A clever trick, Jace... but I think you can do better!" he enthused loudly. Clearly, the Baron had an interesting idea of fun to be egging his opponent into performing better.

Aether Charges Gained: 1

The dip of the blade didnt take much energy to notice and it was timed with the reversal of the original arcing slash. So Jace continued turning his head sharply so that the lacquered helmet took the point of the blade which dug in sharply but quickly lost its penetrating power. At the same time as his following foot took its first skipping step back the Katana flowed quick as lightning back towards the mans bicep above his sword hand. His retreat was probably fast enough to avoid the brunt of the blade, but the tip could still rip through the muscle. The red lightning crackled menacingly as the attack came back across center.

Jace would follow up by continuing forward without relinquishing the attack. His sharp eyes sparkled as he thrust forward with the katana using the full extension of his body and the heavier blade to make a difficult to parry thrust, past the maximum extension of his opponents blade in a similar thrust. Power began to build up around them again as Jace let his aether reserves fill, and the time run out on his lightning spell.

The Baron shook his head disapprovingly at the wild swings of his opponent, that, for all their power, were so shockingly ill-placed that he began to wonder if the man even knew how to use his weapon properly. His smile turned down into a sort of noncommittal frown, as he calmly raised the rapier above the return swipe as a natural conclusion and recovery of his circle sixte.

Perhaps it was the fact that Jace had turned his head aside to mitigate the riposte that was messing with his depth perception, but his blade point was swinging nearly a foot short of the nobleman's guard. The rapier was 3.3 feet long, a distance that coupled with his own arm was interposing a comfortable five feet between them, a distance that the samurai was going to have to work a lot harder to close than he was currently.

In theory, even the following forward thrust to his midsection could have been simply cut short with a stop attack to the fore-arm or some such, but the Baron wasn't going to take his chances with that. After all, he had the entire arena to work with, compared to the narrow alleys of Renaissance Naples or the fencing piste. So he simply slid back another half-step, boots crunching the sand underneath, as he presented his rapier point-first once more, casually en garde. Despite the heat, he didn't even seem particularly flustered, as he turned the back-step into a slowly-widening circle to his own right around the samurai, using his left hand to return the now expended and cooling firearm to its rightful place in his belt holster. It returned to guard with a new piece of equipment clutched in hand... a main gauche, that is, a parrying dagger that fit comfortably into his off-hand grip, drawn from a sheath on his left thigh.

The familiarity with which the Baron grasped the new weapon suggested a mastery of several styles of fencing combat, as his stance squared towards the samurai, abandoning the right-side forward in favor of a more centered, frontal stance, left foot to the side and slightly back as the Baron came to a halt, once again raising his voice in a taunt. "Care to try again?"

Due Respect – Kelvin’s trusty off-hand weapon: a main gauche. This parrying dirk is ten inches long in the blade, and features an extensive hilt designed to effectively trap and deflect another blade. Typically, this dagger is sheathed upon Kelvin’s left thigh. He may draw it quickly in a pinch, though using it in conjunction with the rapier necessitates a different stance. Rarely, it is also used to deter or strike an enemy that has closed past the effective range of the rapier. It too features a tapering blade and sharp point, perfect for stabbing through all manner of flesh and armor, and weighs half a pound.
