Moira stirred, shaking off the last trace of lethargy. It was just a little after dawn (she’d always woken early, even as a foal), and the morning air was cold and crisp. She felt no chill despite that, however, thanks to the warm form of her mate, Alder, beside her. A smile splayed across her lips at the sight of him, and she buried her nose in the dark hairs of his mane, still rumpled from sleep. She nuzzled his cheek, too – softly, so as not to wake him – before stepping away.
Winter was coming to its end, and the fruits of winter with it. Much of her life had been spent amongst the plains, not the villages, but she’d herd of clementine trees that were grown there. The fruits were cute and small and sweet – she was sure Alder would like them, and another smile lit up her face at the thought of his imagined response. Yes, she would certainly hunt for them today.

The sun arced across the sky, spilling its rays upon the earth and chasing back the dark of night. Birds burst forth from the trees, and flowers cupped against the light as the river sang across the plain, but though a warm day was promised amidst the receding winter, Cefin did not share their joy. He squeezed one eye open when a shaft of sunlight hit it before rolling onto his side with a grunt. He’d nothing against the new day – it seemed all fine and dandy, really – but he’d come here to sleep, not to be blinded.
With herculean effort, he managed to drag himself to shade without getting onto his feet at all. His expression was so smug that one might have thought he’d performed some otherworldly feat – and, in his mind, he had. The reward, of course, was a nap.

Grass made way to shrubs, and trees came not long afterwards. Moira squinted, searching for anything orange amidst the leaves. The number of trees grew steadily as she walked on, but no clementines were to be found – only a brown and blue blob in the distance. A soquili, it seemed. Was it hurt? It was not oft she saw one lying so, but her concern turned to amusement when she neared and saw the stallion was only napping.
“Isn’t it dangerous to lay about like this?” she chuckled, prodding him with a hoof. He replied with a few mumbled words that may or may not have been sleep-talking. Hm. The stallion seemed comfortable enough here to feel safe. Did he know the area?
“Hey, mister; wake up!” She nudged him harder.

Cefin groaned, drawling the sound into a sort of humming noise before quieting. The mare took the silence to mean he’d fallen asleep again (and rightly so) and continued her attempts, until at least Cefin realized this wasn’t a bad dream but, sadly, reality.
One eye opened just a crack and his tail flicked his tail with displeasure when he saw the sun was still out. Despite such a burdensome trouble, however, he managed to see the spotted form of his assailant. She didn’t seem too dangerous, and he closed his eye again.
“Did you need something?” Only his lips moved when he spoke, so that he’d seem asleep to those who were unable to hear him.
