Looking up from her book, Nelis'viel peered through the cracked window at the starry sky. How long had it been since she'd fled? Years, at least. Time seemed to bleed together after a while. It hadn't helped that she had never begun counting. Counting wouldn't bring him back.
Ras...

"You know, Nel, a person who loves books can't be a bad person."
The ralts looked up at the smiling man beside her and tilted her head. "Really?"
The man nodded before looking at the books lining the shelves of the library. "If they care for inanimate objects, then they must surely care for the people and pokemon around them. They couldn't possibly be bad people."
Nelis'viel nodded, smiling. "You like books, so it must be true. You're a nice person, Ras."
The man laughed as he ruffled the ralts' hair. "Well, I'm glad you think so, Nel."

Nelis'viel felt the sadness of the pokemon in the mines as she passed by with Ras, her mood visibly dampening. Ras looked down at his companion and scooped her up in a hug. "It's alright, Nel. You're fine." He whispered kindly. The ralts managed a small smile as her mood picked up, and the man walked faster to the library. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ras was the librarian at a library very few people visited, and even then only seldomly. It didn't bother him, however - it gave him time to read with Nel, who he had taught to read with surprising ease.

"Get back to work, you stupid pokemon!" One of the pokemon-slave drivers shouted from outside the library, followed by the sound of a kick. The man's anger seeped into Nelis'viel, and she found herself frowning. Ras scooped up the ralts into a calming hug, but the appearance of more anger counteracted his attempts to soothe the ralts. A scream came from outside. The man.
Ras set Nelis'viel down on the table with a quick "I'll be right back." before rushing out the door to see what was going on. He returned just as quickly. "We've got to go, Nel. Right now." Before she could ask what was happening, she got her answer. Anger. Anger. Rage. Pain. Despair. Anger. Agony. The emotions and feelings rushed into her, and the ralts tried in vain to fight off the waves of nausea from feeling so much at once. As Ras picked up the ralts, the man who had screamed earlier went crashing through the door before sliding to a stop at the table.
Death.

As Ras ran through the streets, Nelis'viel continued to receive feelings from the pokemon and townsfolk. Anger. Pain. Despair. Agony. Rage. Agony. Death. Death. Death. Death. Death.
So much death.
The ralts passed out in the man's arms.

Nelis'viel woke up some time later as Ras succeeded in making it to the edge of Inhinx. The man gave the ralts a reassuring smile, and a warmth spread through her. Kindness. But even that was twinged with hidden worry.
"Is everything going to be okay, Ras...?"
The man smiled. "It will. I promise." The ralts smiled back, even though she could tell he was lying.
Pain. Despair. A glimmer of hope.
The duo turned to see a couple of human running up the hill. "Help us, please! Help us!!"
Anger. Rage. Hatred. Hatred. Hatred.
Nelis'viel recoiled in fear as she sensed the mass of pokemon chasing the two. She turned to Ras, to tell him what was happening, but he was gone. Whirling around, she saw him heading for the two humans. "Ras, no! Ras, the pokemon!" The man stopped in his tracks and turned to face Nelis'viel. He smiled reassuringly. 'It would be okay', it said.
The two humans and Ras were engulfed in flame.
Screams echoed throughout the night. Agony. Agony. Agony. Agony. Agony. Death. Agony. Agony. Death. Agony. Kindness. Death.
And with the last death, it felt to Nelis'viel that the last glimmer of happiness in the world was stomped out. Screaming unintelligibly, the ralts teleported away, not caring where she went, so long as it was away from all this pain and death.

Nel's thoughts were distracted as a warmth filled her. A warmth she had thought gone forever.
Happiness.
"Look at all the books, Mef! I could stay here for years and still not be done!" The girl that entered the library gaped in open wonderment.
Behind her entered a duclops. "Knowing you, you're actually thinking about doing just that, aren't you." It wasn't even a question.
From her corner of the library, Nelis'viel stared as the warmth continued to fill her. If not for the warmth of the girl's happiness, the ralts would have disbelieved her eyes. Someone was here. She found herself walking towards the two.
The dusclops immediately turned to face her as she approached, and she fell backwards in fright. The duskull seemed to stare a hole through her, and she felt the emotion he was feeling.
Protection.
She called out to them. "I'm sorry, I don't mean you any harm. It's just been so long since anyone has been here. It's been so long."
The dusclops backed down, understanding. "My apologies for assuming."
Behind him, the girl stepped forward, tilting her head, blinking a few times. "I've never seen a pokemon like you before. And I've seen lots of pokemon." She looked beyond the ralts at the pile of books from where she had come from. "You can read?" Nelis'viel nodded and the girl turned to her dusclops companion. "Hey, Mef. This one's not even attacking us. I can be friends with it, right?"
"I have no qualms with it. Do as you wish."
"Sweet." The girl walked towards the ralts.
Kindness.
"You like books, too. Want to be friends with me?"
"You know, Nel, a person who loves books can't be a bad person."
The ralts nodded. "Yes. Yes, I'd love to!"
The girl smiled. Kindness. Happiness. "Cool. My name's Lenore, and that's Mef. I have other friends, but you can meet them later. What's your name?"
"I'm Nel. Nelis'viel."
Lenore smiled. "Cool name. Nel, it is. I don't have a pokeball left, but you can just walk with us, if you like. We're heading for Motterosa."
Nelis'viel had no idea what or where Motterosa was, but she nodded anyway. The girl was a good person. That was all that mattered.
