There had been no time to settle in or adjust before she was charged with her duties. To obey was paramount and to disobey meant death. There were no more warnings, no leniency, and no mercy. Horus had made it clear that he would feed her to his children while she was still alive. She had learned that Horus did not bluff.

It was dark by the time they'd made it to their night camp. Horus had forbidden the siblings from ripping each other's throats open, but they glared at each other and growled the whole night through.

Horus had made her lay between them. All night long she shivered in fear, knowing that if they attacked each other she'd be in the middle. But they had not attacked him, because Horus' word was law.

The next night they made it to their family home. There were nests on the ground and in the trees, caves, and all manner of imposing things.

Horus took her to the side, sizing up her shaking form. She was small and delicate. Just what he wanted. He circled her as she quivered. "I told Morsmordre that I needed someone small, dellicate and entertaining. You seem to fit the bill."

He stopped and stared into her eyes, "You are here to teach my children some manners--mostly my sons. They need to learn that some things must be handled with civility and cunning. Not everything is talons and blood, though it is the better way."

"You will stay here as long as I say. You will do anything I say, anything short of that will result in your death," he smiled wickedly. "It will not be an easy one. They will chase you down until your bones are broken and you are exhausted, then they will strip the flesh off your bones bit by bit until you beg for death as easy as Morsmordre's." He grinned even wider, raking a talon across her cheek. "Tell me, you're not simple are you? You understand don't you?

He watched her shudder than nod her head vigorously. "Good," he laughed.

It crept up on her, so slowly that she did not realize it at first. She could not have named it even as it sank into her like talons of a bird of prey. One day she was dancing, the dance of the seven bells and the next her movements felt like she was sloughing through mud.

She couldn't get out of bed by the next day.

The loss of her brother through separation and her need to save him was not enough to keep the depression away. It crept into her until her whole body felt too heavy to rise.

Let them find her here laying, let them kill her for all the good it would do. She felt dead already, she'd never find her brother Sven. She'd never see him again, why even fight any longer?

The children of Horus were cruel to her at best, but that didn't matter when she had hope. She would die here now, she knew that--there was no escape.

She closed her eyes, waiting for the end to come.

Khonvoum Pahket stretched his wings out beside him. He had just come back from a night hunt, blood still fresh on his talons as the sun rose. During his hunts, his father had taught him to keep an eye out for the border and to watch for any signs that anyone was getting too close.

But no one ever did. Maybe they knew who lived here, maybe they didn't--but it was quiet for the most part. The few that did come into the area were brought before his parents to have sentence passed.

Most were done away with, feasted on or used for dissection. Some were made into slaves, or minions. It depended on the talent and his father's own inclination that day. He didn't care much about that except for the killing part.

He put down his book in one of the lower nests and pulled off his glasses. It was then that he noticed Viveka's absence. Usually, she was bustling around serving each of them--a dance or song there, food or cleaning their vests. Whatever they told her to do.

His father had steadily applied more and more rules to her keeping. The longer and better she served, the more they were made to treat her kindly and civilly. His father believed that learning that would force them to be able to deal better with the world when he sent them out.

They were his father's army in the making, but they did not know yet what battle they were going to fight.

He saw his sister Artemis, her muzzle stained with blood and her body covered in scratches. "Have you seen the Thrall?"

Artemis had returned home slowly, her body aching after her feeding. She'd fed more than she had in weeks, her stomach sloshing with blood. The feeling brought on one of contentment. It wasn't often that she got the chance to down something quite so big.

She hummed happily as she came into the camp. Her brother's call caught her off guard, and she turned quickly to him. Her eyebrows creased together. "The thrall?" She shrugged her shoulders nonchalantly. "The new one or the dove?"

They had several thralls, her brothers were always so...non specific. She glanced around, "Where is the dove?"

Usually, the dove was up dancing or singing or something like that--their father forcing them to speak with her like a civilized creatures. Finesse, he said was an art worth learning. As of yet though, Artemis had not found that to be the case. One rake of the claw and she could open a throat---that was much more satisfying than words.

Khonvoum frowned darkly. It was unlike the thrall to avoid or delay her duties. Had she run? Would they be hunting her by nightfall? No, she would not run. He knew that.

Horus had explained to his children something of what kept her there. Her legs were strong and fast, she could fly like the wind on hooves if she chose but it was honour that kept her there. She had paid a debt her family owed. If she did not fufill it then her brother would be responsible for the debt.

Debts were something of magic and mystic. They had to be paid, his father had taught him that. They gave you power and they took it. It was love that kept her from leaving, love for the brother who would suffer in her stead. She did not bow to the magic, she did not even understand it. Neither did he.

But the was some kind of magic involved in debt, and it was dangerous.

She knew they would come for her soon. They'd rip the flesh from her bones probably. She should run, she should get up and do her chores. All she had to do was go through the motions, but the motions seemed....too much.

Viveka kept picturing herself rising up, but the action never made it to her legs or her body. She was too weary, too tired to care. Let them come, let them kill her. At least there would be no more worry, and no more threats.

She could lay here and just die. The pain would be temporary and then would come then nothing. She'd be done. They wouldn't be able to kill her again.

Sven

The voice in the back of her mind insisted. They would get her brother, her little brother. They would make him suffer. They would do all they had done to her and more...and more. She didn't want that to happen, she didn't want him to come to this place.

She pressed her legs harder and struggled panting to her knees. Sven, the voice in the back of her mind kept urging. Sven. Sven. Sven.

If she died, they would take him. She was all that stood in the way of him coming here. Sven. Sven. Sven! Her mind screamed it and bitter tears leaked down her face. She had to fight to live, to fight to live if only for him.

Only for him.

It took more effort than she thought possible to get one hoof under her body. She was trembling by the time it rested on soft earth. Hurry, they might be coming the voice urged in the back of her mind while another part whispered to just lay down it'd be over soon.

Sven.

She was sweating by the time she got two hooves under her. It was glistening on her back as though she'd run miles--she felt like she had. Viveka lurched forward pulling the rest of herself to her feet unsteadily.

She stood there like a newborn foal, wobbly and unsure. Memories of Sven at that age came to her mind, the worried look and the scared eyes. But how he had lit up when he saw her. He had loved her from that first moment as much as she loved him.

Sven.

She could do this. She could do anything for Sven. All she had to do was go through the motions, nothing had to mean anything. All she had to do was breathe in and then out, one minute at a time. Even just a breath at a time.

Viveka took a step as she heard Khonvoum coming, and plastered a smile on her face though she felt far from smiling.

Artemis knew her father believed in the power and beauty of words. It was easy for him, he could see them--make them tangible and read. But for her, for her siblings it was harder. Finesse was never as good as force. How could one find joy in eviscerating with words rather than talon and claws? Her father did, but she did not understand it. She did not know what power words held over him.

The slave was the same way. She stayed though she could run, because of her word. Words and power. Power and words. Her father had tried to teach her that it was more than that--that words could betray you, release you, or condemn you.

She never spoke it, but she often thought that foolish. What power did words have over her?

But then, her father had power over her--over them all, power and words and claws. She could not understand it.

The thrall was standing there, her legs trembling and body sweating. There seemed something wrong with her, but there was nothing he could see. He assessed her slowly. "Why have you not been doing your duties....Viveka?" He added her name as an afterthought.

Her eyes were glassy, her hair dirty--her feather drooping in her hair. "Are you sick little dove?" If she died, father would be angry and take it out on him. She was his responsibility to take care of, to learn from.

But it was a lesson, he could not fathom. The quiet grace of her, the easy movement of her long limbs that moved fluidly despite bruises or fear. Something drove her that he did not understand.

Sven

Viveka smiled. "I am fine," the world seemed too bright and too dull at the same time. Her legs felt unsteady beneath her, but she kept her feet. "I felt a little feverish," she said truthfully. "I thought I might faint if I danced. I'm sorry, I displeased you. Very sorry." Please don't hit me.

But he looked more concerned than outrage. God, she was going crazy--that couldn't be right. They didn't care, it was only that Horus' word was law that kept her from being killed or eaten piece by piece.

"What would you like me to do? Shall I sing or dance for you?" She did not feel as though she could, but if she didn't...Sven, oh Sven. She could do it, she had to there was no other choice.

She watched her brother through eyes thinly veiled with hate. Here he was pandering to the dove. It was against their nature. She felt that white hot hate well up in her. Blood of her blood, sired by the same parents and yet--she hated them, hated all of her brothers as her father knew they were destined to be. He was always right, her father. It rankled her. But disobeying him was not even a question in her mind. His word was law. His word. It always come back to words for their family.

Why did words have such power?

It did not taste a lie, but neither was it the whole truth-- a gentle subtely that he had learned from watching her as his father intended. Viveka looked at him with those wild guileless eyes and he knew for the first time that this was a new type of game. One his father played often. In every good lie there was some truth so that it did not see a lie. He had learned that long before but he had not understood what could be learned through this kind of trickery. What was she hiding? And why?

Soquili lied to protect themselves or others. She could not protect herself, not really--so then it was someone else, he reasoned. Was it the brother he had heard her cry for at night? She had never spoke his name, guarding it closely.

"Yes, sing for me little dove." He stroked a heavy claw through her hair.

Her fear choked her for a moment as his claw tugged her hair. It was an attempt at...compassion? Or something? He was trying to figure out what she was hiding. She leaned into his claw as though it was soothing instead of painful. This was a dangerous game, but much better than his wraith.

She searched her mind and she began a low humming in her throat. She sang him a song she had often performed, a song about a meadow and peaceful sleep. It was a gentle soothing song that she had first learned with her grandmother, one she had taught Sven when no one else paid attention to him.

She wondered if he thought of her? But thinking of him was dangerous, she could not even say his name if she wanted to keep him safe.

Khonvoum listened to the dove's voice, it was cracked and low--unusual for her. Everything she did was with grace, even beauty. Beauty wasn't something he often appreciated except in blood and entrails. She looked exhausted.

This was the price of secrets. "You should rest," he stroked his claw through her hair. He saw her grimmace as he did it and lightened his touch. He was getting better at reading her cues. "Rest little dove."

How best to extract the information? What would be best? He could torture her, but she would never tell. She would die first. So he had to trickk her. There is power in words. He just needed the right ones.

Artemis eyed the exchange going on between the thrall and her brother. She tilted her head in wonder. He was trying to coax something out of her. The entire exchange was sickening.

With sudden decision, Artemis backhanded Viveka. The bruise started instantly and the tips of her claws made neat marks on her flesh. Her brother turned on her angry, but she met him head on.

"Coddle the thrall and she'll give you nothing but lies. She is meant to be broken and bent, to serve." Her voice was a hiss, "You and father and your stupid words." She was sick of these endless lessons.

Her father backhanded her and she felt blood in her mouth. His words were like acid to her. Your brother has learned a lesson you never will. You are weak and if you do not learn, you will be nothing better than a slave.
