Mobster x Poor girl

Background

At the sight of a quiet, lonely girl sitting by the edge of the curb sparked little Marcus’ interest. Maybe it was the sad look in her eyes, or maybe it was the fact that she was alone avoiding possible eye contact from any parent or the other excited children by the playground. Marcus detests the rowdy children but he had did not mind this when his mother was around him. Reminded of why he was here in the first place, Marcus then diverted his gaze onto his mother, who was happily chatting with the other mothers around the playground. A small smile crept onto his lips when his mother broke into laughter from what seemed like a hilarious joke by one of the obnoxious ladies. In his eyes, his mother's smile was the most precious thing in the whole wide world. His mother took a small break from laughing to keep her eyes on Marcus, urging him with her eyes to play with the other kids. But he merely gave her a weak smile and turned his attention back to the quiet girl. His mother followed his gaze, looked at the girl and sighed. “Looking at girls at this age….just like his father” chuckling as she said so.

“_____!” an older lady wearing, what appears to be a cleaners outfit, uttered an in-auditable name from across the road. The quiet girl stood up and waved at her, with sparkling eyes as she did so. “Mummy!” Marcus’ brows relaxed a little as he watched the woman cross the road, but the happy reunion was cut short as a red vehicle appeared out of nowhere speeding towards the woman with no intent of slowing down. Marcus tried to call out but it was too late, the vehicle was too close to her mother, she had no chance to dodge it in any way. Marcus ran towards the girl and covered her eyes before she could witness the horrid incident. Upon impact, the girl’s mother was thrown a couple of inches away, and rested on the ground in her own pool of blood.

8 years later~

After all that has happened, Marcus could not recall the events that occurred after the incident. That was the last time he ever saw her…but he was reminded of the accident when his own mother died 8 years later, when Marcus was at the age of 18. This marks the point where little Marcus took a turn for the worst, not only did he shut everyone out of his life but he joined his father’s gang, the one thing which his mother wished for him not to. A part of him inside, hated his mother for leaving him so early without warning. For quite some time, Marcus cried himself to sleep, trying to remember his mother’s pale, powerless face as she lost her battle with leukemia. He also hated himself for being so weak, unable to help his own mother in time of need. With that, Marcus lost the cheery, excitable exterior and developed a cold, hateful and resolved composure. For years he had not opened up to anyone, not even his father. But after 9 years, at the age of 27, Marcus found himself distracted by this one girl, who was taking out the trash of one of his father’s club. The familiarity of her face, he could not pin point exactly where he met her but her mere existence had constantly been on his mind when he first saw her, which irritates him profusely.

Marcus stood there with a cigarette at hand, blowing a puff after another. He waited for JJ, his right hand man to come with news of his latest conquest, the lease of one of a casinos belonging to the third wealthiest man of the country, Argon Mitchel. He cleared his throat as he saw JJ’s figure approach, one block away. Marcus tossed the cigarette aside and greeted JJ, “Do you have it?” and with a smile, JJ took out a piece of paper from his left suit pocket and handed it to Marcus. The deed of Club Duke Casino he examined the deed thoroughly before pocketing it into his own suit pocket. Hastily, Marcus got into their SUV and instructed the driver to take them to Club Valkyrie, his father’s club. “Boss…how did you get that deed? I mean Mitchel will never give his property away so easily” Marcus took a while before he answered JJ’s question, he shut his eyes and said ”Don’t call me Boss, just Marcus. He didn’t give it to me willingly” and with that the whole car ride was silent.

As they got out of the car, Marcus stepped onto the carpeted flooring by the door entrance, aggressively pushing pass the long line of people waiting to enter. All of a sudden, as he was doing so, a drunken customer grabbed Marcus by the shoulder and swung his fist towards his face, but Marcus’ reflexes were just as quick, he grabbed the man’s wrist and landed a punch right on his stomach. The drunken man fell to the ground, clutching his stomach in pain. In a split second, Marcus was already gone from the scene, leaving the others around them shocked in fear.

He entered the club, blasted with loud music and wild girls, most of which were partially groping on any man they see. “Another one of father’s games,” he thought to himself. Before he could get to the upper level, Marcus bumped into a woman, dressing in a maid’s attire, picking up empty glasses on her tray. And before he could say anything, she had already got away. Marcus caught glimpse of her grey eyes and was immediately overcome by their familiarity. He took a second glance at her as she got out the back carrying the trash with her.
“Who is that woman?” JJ followed his gaze and said, “That is the new waitress, is there something you want with her?” Marcus waited until the back door was fully shut before looking away, pushing thoughts of her aside and started up the stairs. “No, leave her be”

Pushing away the thoughts of the woman back on the dance floor, Marcus continued on towards the last room at the end of the hallway. He stiffened up at the sight of his father’s henchmen standing outside the door. “Look it’s that spoilt boy again” Marcus clenched his fist but before he could act, JJ held his arm down firmly, “You need to calm down, what can hurting him accomplish. You know that everyone here doesn’t like you. They’re just going to have a good excuse to hit you” Marcus relaxed his fist and shoulders, seeing that, JJ loosed his grip on him and continued on towards the Boss’ door. He looked into henchman’s eyes again and said “What did you call me?” the man chuckled “Are you deaf now? I said you are a stupid spoilt bo….” Before he could finish, Marcus rammed his fist right onto the man’s throat. Knowing that the pain was enough for him, Marcus left him staggering trying to take a breath. But just as JJ predicted, the mass horde guarding the door turned towards Marcus and charged towards him.

JJ turned around and caught a glimpse of Marcus before he was pounded by the mob. Every punch seemed to miss Marcus by a few inches, but there is just so much he could dodge. Alarmed by the urgency, JJ barged in the Boss’ office and told him of the trouble Marc has gotten himself into. Immediately Marc’s father stood up and got out of the room.
“Boys, enough!” And with these simple words, the henchmen broke apart, leaving Marcus in the center with a cracked lip and blood trailing from side of his left eye. With a sigh, Marcus walked towards his father and handed the deed without a single word. “You should clean yourself up, gesturing at his face” Marcus looked at his father, “I don’t need you to care, not then and definitely not now” Marcus limped slightly towards the stairs, ignoring his father’s concern.

He sat by the bar as he swung his hand up to order a gin and tonic but not before dismissing JJ to his own business.
“Are you sure you’ll be alright?” Marcus nodded and with that JJ left.

His eyes softened slightly at the sight of his gin and tonic approaching, the voices around him came by and went in a mummer, unsure if those people were talking to him or it was just his imagination. Marcus was drifting in and out of consciousness, and the second that he was fully aware of his surroundings, he saw her again, the new girl. Without his consent, she was attempting to dab his wound with a cloth. Just as he saw this, Marcus grabbed her wrist before she could do so. “What do you think you’re doing? Don’t touch me” pushing her hand away with much effort, masking the pain caused with every move. Ignoring her, he picked up the glass of alcohol and drank it all in a single gulp.

"Enough, I just want to be left alone" he avoided eye contact with the new girl and turned back to face the bar once again. He waited for another round of his drink to arrive and chugged it down just as he did the first glass. Marcus left the bar for the men's room and washed off the blood from his wound. "Ahh!" the sting was too intense for him to mask his pain. As he got out of the toilet, he saw her again, before he could move away, the manager got up to Marcus again, "I didn't realize you were Mr Pettifer's son, I'm sorry please don't tell the Boss what happened. I can fire the girl" Marcus stared at the manager in disgust and aggressively pushed him aside, "Get out of my face..you don't have to fire that girl. And if the next time I don't see her here, it will be you, without a job."

Marcus left the pathetic man by the dance floor and headed upstairs to the lounge. He dropped himself onto the nearest couch, before a minute could pass he had already drifted to slee. The flashback of the horde of henchmen coming towards him haunted his vision before he drifted off into darkness with loud music on the background.

In the dark, Marcus’ dreamless sleep was interrupted by a muffled cry from a distance, edging closer with each second. Just as he was about to open his eyes and find the commotion, the cry died down. In annoyance, Marcus shuffled his sleeping position to from his back to his side, allowing the ceiling light to shine on his face. Just as he was about to drift off, back to a deep sleep, a shadow passed his sleeping stationary figure. With that, Marcus immediately opened his eyes, thinking that maybe, just maybe, the shadow was of one of the henchmen who attacked him recently. He extended his hand to reach the unknown person and as he got hold of something, he immediately sat up straight. Before he looked up to see who it was, the arm that he was holding trembled in his touch.

Marcus looked up and stared at the woman, “It’s her again” he thought. He loosened his grip, not noticing that he had held her arm ever so tightly. Still keeping his hold on her, Marcus uttered,
“What are you doing here?” staring into her eyes with a blank expression.

Marcus got up, centering his gaze on her pale grey eyes, onto her long flawless nose and down to her cherry lips. Realizing that he had been staring for far too long, he diverted his gaze on the clothes she held. He looked back onto her face again and finally released his hold on her. Marcus turned around and headed back downstairs without uttering a word. He pushed pass the people dancing and grinding on each other on the dance floor, to be greeted by the back door of the club. Marcus took out his cigarette pack and shoved a cigarette in his mouth while walking towards the main street, pausing right underneath a street lamp before lighting it up. He took a long inhale and closed his eyes for a second before letting out a big puff of smoke. No matter how many times he was told that smoking was bad for him, it seemed that it was the only thing that keeps his mind at peace.
