The month was almost over and he had yet to use his leave--what better timing than for his promotion? The question was, where to? Jack was already used to the prospect of being able to go anywhere in the world; his parents had definitely been just fine as far as money was concerned. But not only would this be in celebration of himself, but also his first proper use of the portals since they went up (the Tim Hortons experience notwithstanding).

His mind seemed to prefer finding solutions by not actively looking for it. Thus did he find himself meandering about the common room with his guitar, plucking the strings idly as he tuned it to the little machine he had just had converted.

(( Perhaps you should engorge yourself? )) Owain suggested eagerly. (( You have all of these wonderful dishes in your memories, I should like to try one! And nothing serves as a better pleasure than food. ))

Eh, I can think of a few better. Jack smiled to himself as he lounged back against the couch, strumming chords idly. Something better than the s**t they give us here is in order, though . . .

Anyone who was presently wandering the halls would find themselves treated to the sight of Eva crawling on the ground on all fours. To be fair, she wasn't doing this for the fun of it, but rather she was looking for the small ring--though obviously not small enough since a careless gesture had flung it from her finger--that had gone rolling off somewhere. It wasn't a particularly special or expensive piece of jewelry since she had bought it for herself a while back, but she liked it.

Although she was vaguely aware of the sound of a guitar as she went crawling into the common room, she paid it little mind, too focused on the task at hand. Brows furrowing, she scanned the ground in search of the tiny item when--there. A glint from the corner of her eye indicated that there was something shiny lying right behind the couch, and with an inaudible sigh of relief, she went crawling up.

Picking the ring up, she examined it quickly to ensure that it bore no new scratches, looking content when she determined that it was no worse for wear. Slipping it back onto her finger, she moved to get up, only to pause upon realizing that there was actually someone sitting on the couch that she was ducking behind, and that they were the source of the strumming guitar.

...And also that that someone had green hair.

There was only one person she knew who fit that criteria. Slowly, the young woman raised her head, her eyes poking out from behind the couch. It probably would have been creepy had she not looked so owlish, her fingers gently gripping the back of the seat.

"I didn't know you played the guitar," Eva chirped right into his ear, unaware that maybe a little forewarning of her presence would have been a good idea, "Though to be fair, I suppose the only thing I really know about you is that you like coffee."

There was a split second when he felt something subtle shift behind him right before someone breathed in his ear. "The ********> Jack jolted upright from the couch and whipped around, ready to bark expletives at the poor peon interrupting his me-time with a fist balled. But when he saw who it was, he tempered his tongue and relazed his fingers, though the scowl was still narrow-eyed. "You like making entrances, don't you," he muttered.

He was a good boy, at least, and didn't make a comment about a woman being on all fours.

Fixing his hair, Jack let his scowl fall away with a small sigh. "What are you doing on the floor anyway? That s**t's never thoroughly cleaned, you know."

She blinked up at him in surprise, a hint of puzzlement in her eyes. "Entrance? Not in particula--oh. Did I startle you?" The look on her face shifted to one of apology, lips curving into a faint, sheepish smile as she pushed himself up to her feet and stood at her full height. There, that was better--her back had been starting to protest from all that crawling she had been doing.

Perking up at his question, Eva lift her hand to flutter her fingers and call attention to the ring. "I accidentally flung this off so I had to look for it. Fortunately, I found it right here." She pointed down at the spot that she was standing on, falling silent for a brief moment before suddenly frowning.

"Speaking of which, I have a bone to pick with you," Eva announced suddenly, propping her hands up on her hips. For a second, it looked like she was seriously upset at him about something, and then--"I've developed a serious coffee addiction because of you. I can't really go a morning without it without getting grumpy."

...And speaking of how she was feeling, it definitely seemed like she was significantly more chipper than she had been previously. Perhaps the man would come to regret having ever spoken to her now.

Eva received a dry look. "Me, startled? No, I like shouting expletives for no reason." So she almost lost a ring, huh? Spaz . . .

His lips parted in a toothy smirk as she grew huffy. "Guilty as charged," he agreed lazily. "You could do worse; caffeine stimulates blood flow, and the jitters go away after a while. If anything, it makes you more alert while on the job." Not that that really did much in some cases, given the island's propensity for random (usually unforeseen) events, but one's workload didn't seem so bad when filled with energy.

"Can't imagine you grumpy, anyway. But you look a lot more upbeat than last time." He sat his guitar back in his lap and idly plucked a few strings in a chord. "I'm guessing things have been looking up since?"

Quietly musing to herself that she wouldn't put it past the man to randomly shout expletives--not that that necessarily seemed like something he'd do, she just knew plenty of people who did such things--the woman simply shrugged in reply. She found herself grinning at the casual way she brushed off her mock accusation, puffing out her chest as she thrust a finger in his direction.

"I'll have you know I was jittering for days, nevermind the fact that I couldn't sleep at until 4am for a couple of nights." Though that had been, to be completely fair, her own fault for having ingested caffeine so late into the day. She had tried to soften the kick with a little milk and sugar in the evenings, not that that really helped.

Taking a seat on the couch, Eva let out a little hum in response and kicked off her shoes. Pulling her knees up to her chest, she turned to smile at him, her shoulders rising and falling in a shrug. "Better, yeah. Otto dropped by to talk to me shortly after. We're still friends," She added the last bit quickly, relief evident in her tone, "Which is really what worried me the most about the whole thing."

He snickered. "Whine, whine, whine~ You sound like you never went to college. 4am ended up being my bedtime some days, if I ever slept at all." That was some life--almost a dream really, short lived and surreal in comparison to his new job. He missed the blur sometimes, all work and deadlines and last minute homework: things were more clear cut. Things were also more boring.

"Well, lucky you! New addiction and chump's in the friendzone." His left hand ghosted over the frets, arranging into a familiar formation as he plucked a version of Fleetwood Mac's "Never Going Back Again". "Happy day, happy day. And I'm in a celebrating mood to boot. Been thinking about using some leave time to get a bit of fresh air today. Pussies here bugging me more than usual."

Ev made a face, wrinkling her nose at the man as she slid down the couch a little. ”I went to college, but at least I was studying when I was staying up until 4am there. Here though…there’s kind of a distinct lack of things to do so late into the night,” Really what was there that one could do once midnight hit? Eva had been spending the last couple of days of wakefulness reading whatever she could find in her room, but at the rate she was going, it wouldn’t be long until she read everything and was bored again.

Too bad not many people seemed to be up at that time.. She would have liked to do some late night chatting or kitchen-raiding, but she knew better than to wake up her more-than-likely-exhausted comrades when they were resting

”Be nice,” She scolded him automatically when he referred to some of their allies as “pussies”. However, it seemed she was more distracted by what he said before that, as she turned to look at him with bright, curious eyes, ”Leave time, huh? Any idea where you feel like going? It’s definitely nice to get away from here from time to time.” Away from all the work, and the stress, and—most importantly, in her mind—away from Caelius. ”What are you celebrating anyways?”.

"Just studying?" he teased. "Like I said: you never really went to college. And you're being very uncreative if you're staying up doing nothing: always someone or something to do."

He shrugged off the gentle reprimand and continued to play, humming a few lines of the first verse as he sat back into the couch. "Recently got promoted, missy; check the new coat! The problem is where to go . . ." Jack sighed, for it was quite the arduous decision to make of course. "Where do you go when you can go anywhere, you know? Got any suggestions, because all I've got is a coffee place in mind, and frankly I want my leave to be a bit mroe exciting than that."

The girl slid down even further, a little groan escaping her lips. ”If you had a prof anything like mine, then you wouldn’t have time to do anything but study,” She answered, wrinkling er nose at the memory. There was a pause then, and she blinked blankly as she turned to look up at him. ”I understand doing something, but how do you do someone—oh.”Oh. Right. That was a thing, wasn’t it.

Eva was speechless for a moment, but then she shook her head, turning her attention to other matters—namely the fact that he had apparently gotten promoted. She didn’t realize that his coat was any different until he pointed it out, blue eyes lighting up as she drew backwards so that she could look him up and down. ”Oh—how did I not notice sooner?! Congratulations, Jack!” She looked genuinely excited for him, even if a promotion in this place really just meant more work and more responsibilities to shoulder. Still, it was a good thing!

”Pretty typical, but I like New York?” Eva suggested after a moment of thought, brows furrowed, ”The last time I went there was three years ago during Christmas but…it was nice! Of course…” Ducking her head, she suddenly looked sheepish. “Being a small town girl, big cities in general are pretty exciting for me.”

He was torn between scoffing and snickering at her innocence--and then decided to do both. Well then, tick a few questions off his list. Stilling the strings, Jack tipped an invisible hat to her and grinned. "I accept your belated sentiments," he said with royal airs and a small bow, "but only because I feel generous today. And hungry. New York, you say . . ."

With a small hup he lurched off the couch and stood, sliding the guitar strap over his shoulder. "Sounds like a date~ I've never been before." A hand stretched out to help her up, insistent and centered like a carefully practiced pose. "You'll have to take the lead on this one."
