The car ride was quiet.
Ethiriel’s consent was the final thought before everything was agreed on, and that cut deep. This arrangement was decided without her, without even having brought up the issue to begin with. She couldn’t figure out what exactly had happened, when the switch was made – but it was happening. Everything was changing and with that, a new guardian was on the way.
Leo had been distant as well, keeping quiet for most of their last moments together. It was strange… he had come to appreciate her company, but even he couldn’t have pointed out the switch. Just as Ethiriel blamed herself and felt bad, so did Leo. He was always busy and couldn’t tend to her like his colleague could. She deserved to be taken care of rather than just allowed to exist. No, he couldn’t keep her pinned up any longer, she needed to be free and go out. He couldn’t offer her this… not at all.
The Frei barely accepted her former-guardian’s hand as she was helped out of the car; she needed his help, this was something she had grown to know. This was why he was letting go. This was why he was leaving her in the arms of a stranger.
Henry had never been exposed to Raevens before; this was new, fresh and interesting to him. He had always wanted children, even if they were far from similar, and he was looking forward to coming to know his new companion.
They had come in separate cars as they would be leaving in much the same way. They had waited outside of the lab for the man to show up, and on the dot he arrived. Pleasantries were offered and then they were to meet inside. It was arranged for them to meet in the Lab’s cafeteria, and had it not been for the signs they might have had a bit of difficulty finding the right place as everything looked the same. Ethiriel recognized the scent of their surroundings, and rather than give her comfort it put an uncomfortable pit near her rune. It was similar – she would be leaving in the arm of another stranger this day. Henry hadn’t placed his hand on Ethiriel yet. It wasn’t time.
As they entered the cafeteria they were greeted by Jeremy and vaguely familiar Raeven that Leo had met on the beach that day so long ago.

Ever since Kyou fell into a coma, Jeremy had been running the administration part of the Lab, and left the rest to Lazarus, Alex and Zeke. Still there was much paper work to go through and get accustom to. So when he got the call about Ethiriel's and her guardian's visit, and the purpose of said visit, he had to go into a flurry of document reading and paper searching again. But of course, a proper gentleman would never let anyone see that side of things. So when the party arrived in the cafeteria at the appointed time, Jeremy had a proper tea set already set out on a table, and even some small cakes as well. The man believed that serving tea is always the most polite way for a meeting to be conducted. He himself was dressed in a tailor made grey pinstripe vest and cornflower blue shirt, looking as prim and smart as ever. And a folder was neatly placed on the table as well, with all the proper documents inside to conduct the order of the day.
"Oh hello! My name is Jeremy, I am the caretaker of the Lab." That is what he is calling himself nowadays when conducting Lab businesses. With a broad smile he reached his hand out, offering it to Leo first, as he recognized the man as Ethiriel's current owner. Then to the other man that he had never seen before, but reminded him of someone else that works in the Lab with the green streaks in his hair. "You must be Henry, Leonard mentioned you to me."
Lazarus was a little bit apathetic about the whole situation. He was only asked to be present as a 'witness' of sorts, or what Jeremy call to be 'proper ethic' as Lazarus had to co-run the Lab with the elder man now in Kyou's absence, and Jeremy still isn't fully comfortable running the Lab in Kyou's place. So he just stayed quietly aside, floating nearer to the kitchen counter instead of going up and greeting the guests. He did nodded in greeting to Ethiriel as she entered, then suddenly remembered that she was blind, and he felt a little bad and embarrassed, hoping no one saw that.
Still, he did felt that she was the victim in the whole ordeal, and he felt sorry for her. So taking a gulp from the mango juice, he set the glass on the kitchen counter and went up to Ethiriel, gently tapping on her shoulder to get his attention. "Hi." Was all he said.

”A pleasure,” Leo confirmed, offering his hand. He seemed worse for wear, plagued by the thought of this day for what felt like weeks now. He didn’t look forward to this at all; in fact, he felt absolutely terrible that he had allowed things to get this bad. The photographer had gotten so deep in his work that he left his friend in the dust. It was his entire fault.
”It’s nice to meet you!” Henry exclaimed, all too eager to be here. His entire demeanor suggested that he was lively and he seemed far more personable than Leonard.
During their greetings Ethiriel had remained silent with her hands clasped together just before her ribbon. She had noticed Laz’s scent upon entry but had no energy to start a conversation, herself. Once his hand met her shoulder her eyes lifted, searching for anything to rest on but when she couldn’t even make out a single detail she allowed them to fall once more. ”Greetings…” she sighed, her voice low and sullen. She did not feel as though she were the victim, but the cause. Had she not been so needy, perhaps this whole ordeal would not even be taking place. Leo was getting rid of her because she was obstructing work; or at least, that’s how it felt in her eyes.
”So,” started Leo, his voice just a step up from Ethiriel’s in tone. ”What do we need to do?”
Henry appeared apologetic and empathetic.

Oh, Leo was quick to get to the point, as Jeremy could see clearly now. Well, it wouldn't be gentlemanly of him to delay the inevitable. "Please take a seat." He motioned towards the table with the tea set displayed on it. "These are the documents that the both of you would need to sign for the transference of guardianship." Picking the folder up, he opened it before Leonard for his perusal. Surprisingly, it was only a one page document detailing the terms of transferral of guardianship, with one column for Leonard to sign on the lower left, and one on the right for Henry's penmanship. "Leonard, you can just sign here, and Henry here." Jeremy instructed. It was a simple enough ordeal as he poured tea for everyone.
Once it was done, Jeremy closed the folder and set it aside. "Now would you like some tea?" He asked with a warm smile. It was only polite to offer, since he had it prepared already. "What about you too little miss? Would you like some tea? I have just gotten some fresh leaves from the Sumatran area." His voice was clear and loud as he spoke to Ethiriel, knowing well her disability.
Lazarus just floated close by and observed the signage of documents quietly. It was conducted in a swift manner, and in seconds it was already done. It felt a little strange really, like handling a property like a house or a car in a legal manner. Only the 'property' in this case was a Raevan, something that is breathing and living, and understood what everything is going on. And in this, Lazarus was empathetic.
However, he was unsure on what else to do to make her feel better, as he himself is in some sort of downer himself. So he just stayed there quietly, just observing.
"Lazarus, why don't you come and join us as well?" Jeremy offered, helping push the Sigel a little bit.
"Okay." Lazarus was kind of glad for the pushing, since he was starting to feel lost and unsure of the point of his presence here. Lifting up his elbow, he elbowed Ethiriel gently motioning that he should grab on or something, so he could lead her to the table without her banging into other things.

And with the papers signed, that was it.
It was a strange sensation, both looking forward to and dreading the silence in his home that was sure to greet him. Leo was going home alone for the first time in years – he wasn’t happy about it, but he knew it was for the better. Henry was going to take much better care of the disabled girl, much better care than he had ever given her. It was for the better, even if it left him with nothing.
”Sure,” he said, his voice listless as always. Only Ethiriel could hear that slightly sad tone – she was the only one who had been with him every day, the only one who could pick out each little bit of his monotonous voice.
Grabbing the tea, he reclined back into his seat.
Henry did much the same, reaching for a cup of his own. He didn’t sit back, however. He sat upright and correctly while nursing on his tea. His eyes followed when the question was posed at Ethiriel, but her lack of reaction other than gently shaking her head was met with knit brows and another apologetic smile. ”Come now, you should have something…” he cooed toward her, his voice soft and careful. Turning to Jeremy after a quick glance to Leo, he asked, ”Perhaps just some hot water for her?”
Ethiriel lifted her head at the nudge of Lazarus’ shoulder, surprised by his familiar treatment. Most others were so careful with her but he wasn’t afraid to just touch and prod her. She didn’t resent it but she was certainly surprised, and once his arm was offered she took it daintily in her own. ”Thank you…”

Lazarus just treats Ethiriel like how he would treat other Raevans - in a courteous manner. Unless the Raevan is a douche bag or crazy like Basil of course. Besides, Ethiriel is just legally blind, it's not like she's super fragile or something. He would be gentle.
The Sigel led the younger Frei towards the table, then settling down to a height similar to a human's sitting one while still holding Ethiriel onto his arms, essentially 'dragging' her down a little bit. He did all this without a word, just a gentle tap on her hand before they dipped down. The Raevans are now seated in between Jeremy and Henry, with Ethiriel next to Jeremy.
He too took a cup of tea to himself. Ever since Jeremy's presence grew ever more constant in the Lab, Lazarus had taken a liking to tea too, since Jeremy brew them so well. Jeremy brewed a pot of ceylon tea today, one of the Sigel's favorites.
As he sat next to Henry, he couldn't help but look at the dude for a moment, mostly at his hair and the green streaks in it. He looked thoughtful as it reminded him of someone else. Who knew green streaks is such a trend nowadays?
As the Frei settled down next to him, Jeremy could faintly pick up the smell of fresh tea leaves from Ethiriel, which intrigued him. It's a nice fresh fragrant that he loves.
"Do you want some hot water?" Jeremy asked the Raevan politely once more, just to make sure. Although at the same time, he had already started pouring some into an empty cup. He has a small pot of hot water left from brewing the tea.

Ethiriel shook her head again, one hand tucked carefully beneath Lazarus’ while the other rested atop. She made no attempts to look anywhere other than directly at the table, even if she could not see it. Even as it was laid before her, her hands remained stationary, but hearing the dull thud she offered a small, polite, ”Thank you.”
The nurse still worried, his smile still apologetic as he turned back to Jeremy. ”So how does this process work?” he asked, setting his own mug of tea onto the table with another, more shielded thud. ”I hate to compare, but is it similar to obtaining a pet via breeder? I completely understand if it’s way, way different.”
He hoped no harm would come from such a simple question.
Leo had practically downed half of his tea, his own stress levels and discomfort growing. The question put him a little on edge but he kept his thoughts to himself, despite periodically passing a glance to Ethiriel. In his eyes he had failed her, failed as a guardian, but this was the closest thing to redemption and a more permanent comfort for her that he could offer. He would miss her, but he couldn’t keep her locked up like a bird in a cage, anymore.

Jeremy was sipping his tea when Henry posed the question, he had to pause and set down his tea cup with a frown at the young man. Then he threw a look at Lazarus, since the Sigel was looking his way.
Lazarus didn't need a second hint, as he was already feeling a wee bit awkward about the whole situation. His and the Frei's presence here is kind of unnecessary anyway. "Hey Ethiriel, since you're not going to have tea anyway, maybe I could give you a tour of the Lab, or maybe you want to visit Kyou?" He suggested, already getting up while holding the younger Frei's arm. He don't want to be here when Jeremy give both the owners lectures.
The older man didn't wait for the Raevans to leave before he spoke sternly. "Perhaps it's best to use 'foster child' as a comparison compared to a 'pet from a breeder'." His look was one of disapproval as he laced his fingers.
Lazarus didn't wait for more before he half dragged Ethiriel out of the room.

It didn’t take long before a wave of horror washed over Henry’s face, paling for just a moment before a blush crept across his cheeks. ”Oh goodness,” he started, bringing a hand up to his mouth. ”I’m so sorry, I really didn’t mean it like that! I should have thought that over better in my head…” The remorse was clear on his face as he flashed an apologetic look toward Ethiriel and Laz, now halfway out the door.
Leo scoffed quietly to himself, rolling his eyes at the nurse’s mistake. He didn’t chime in, however; merely keeping his eyes on Jeremy with his permanently bored expression. This was off to a horrible start.
Meanwhile, half dragged out of the room, Ethiriel’s brows knit upward as she closed her eyes, allowing Lazarus to lead her without question. A pet. A pet… was that all she was to Henry? To Leo? Is that why it was so easy for her to be handed away to a complete stranger? The Frei nearly felt sick, as close to ill as a Raeven could feel – a sensation she wasn’t used to, nor did she ever wish to feel again. Hot tears threatened and burned her eyes but she held them back. Taking a deep breath, she said with a surprisingly steady voice, ”I would not mind meeting Sir Kyou for I have not, yet.”
She knew of his condition, and while he would not be awake it would still be a pleasure to a certain extent.

"Yes you should have!" His eyes narrowed at the nurse, only glimpsing from the corner of his eyes the swinging of the door, indicating the Raevans had left. "She's not a dog you get from a breeder, she could understand your every word. Imagine how she felt being compared to a pet! You better think what you're going to say to her later."
"And you." He turned to Leo next, his expression still one of disapproval. The rolling of Leo's eyes did not escape Jeremy's eagle eyes. He might be old but his eye sight is still as sharp as ever. "You don't have the right to roll your eyes at him. You're the one here that is irresponsible, Henry is doing you a favor by taking Ethiriel off your hands. If anything, you should thank him, not mock him!"
Lazarus was quiet for a moment as they passed through the laboratory with the tanks. He was trying to emphatize with Ethiriel, to gauge her response and feelings to what just happened. And even though she was trying to conseal it with her steady voice, the upset on her face do not lie.
"I'm sure he didn't really mean that..." He said, trying to ease the Frei's mind. "People sometimes say stupid things, he just used a bad example is all." And he definitely looks like someone that could be a little bit careless with words sometimes.
As they crossed Kyou's room, Lazarus is just glad that Ethiriel is blind so she couldn't see the mess he had made in there. When he opened the door towards Kyou's bedroom, a gush of cold air gushed out, and a soft beeping noise could be heard from within. Carefully he led the Frei to the right side of Kyou's bed. Ethiriel couldn't really see Kyou, but maybe there's another way. "Here." His voice was just a whisper as he lowered Ethiriel's hand to the bed, her fingers just grazed against Kyou's skinny hand.

Henry winced again as Jeremy’s voice rose, this time giving him full eye contact out of respect. ”I will, I promise. I’ll give her the most sincere apology that I can muster…” This was said aloud, though not toward anyone in particular but himself. He felt beyond silly and very remorseful. It was a messed up thing for him to say, even by accident.
The words directed at the young photographer were harsher in a way, scolding him deeply for the crime he was committing. He agreed without question, however, giving Jeremy a curt nod. ”I know.” Leo wasn’t embarrassed about being caught mocking Henry, but his attitude hid his true feelings – he wanted to appear strong for Ethiriel, naively thinking that if he were to appear strong, it would be easier for the Frei.
However, it only made her question and hate herself more.
”It is all right,” Ethiriel said, her voice still low and careful.
The cold air startled her, sending a shiver through the Raeven. Far colder than she naturally liked, but Laz was offering her a kindness she felt she hadn’t been given in a long time, so she couldn’t refuse such a kind gesture. Kyou was important to Lazarus and though Ethiriel didn’t know either of them well, she understood that without question. She once thought she had that relationship with her guardian, but… well, here they were.
She allowed the Sigel to guide her hand, and once her fingers met Kyou’s bony wrist she took over from there. Her hand gently followed the lines of the doctor’s bones and skin, slowly following up the arm to meet his face.
While he was unfamiliar, Ethiriel felt that small bond that most other Raevens carried for their creator. She sighed, gently cupping his face with her hand.

Jeremy didn't know what took over him, he is usually more mild mannered than this. Though ever since he had taken over the administrative work in the Lab he had been more prone to anger outbursts. As evident by Lazarus hasty departure on cue just now. This was not the first lecture the Sigel had seen him give. Perhaps it was the whole child-abandonment issue though. The irresponsibility of dumping a pet, or in this case, a Raevan, practically a child! That is rubbing him in all the wrong places.
Leaning back, he shut his eyes and lets out a long sigh, massaging the area in between his brows. "I hope the both of you know what you are doing." Jeremy said as he opened his storm grey eyes again, dashing them between the two men. "I don't want to go through this again." He tapped his fingers on the documents to indicate his meaning.
At least Henry looks sincere as he said those works. There is hope in this young man yet.
Lazarus just watched quietly as Ethiriel traced her deft fingers along Kyou's body, finally reaching his face. She traced them around his sunken eyes, his skinny cheek and his dry lips. He don't know why, but there is a certain feeling of calmness as he watched the scene before him. No words were needed, just the gentle beeping of the monitor and the humming of the machines were heard in the room.
The Sigel didn't know how much time had passed, but when Ethiriel stopped feeling Kyou's facial feature he felt like it was his cue to speak. "It's been ten months now." There was a slight tone of sadness in his voice. "You know... Kyou wasn't a very good guardian either." He admitted. "He is always so engrossed with his research. He sometimes even put more priority on other Raevans instead of me. Sometimes... I feel like I'm more of an employee than his family."
He wasn't sure what he was trying to achieve, telling Ethiriel this story. Perhaps he felt like he relates to her in some way when it comes to guardian problems. Although he had never been technically abandoned before. "How do you feel about your whole situation..?" He asked tentatively.

The man’s temper was honestly called for with Henry’s slip-up. He had been more than genuine with his apology, but it was still a horrible mistake to make, especially in front of the Frei in question, and it sat hard in his stomach. The nurse sunk slightly in his chair, though it wasn’t noticeable.
”I assure you, it won’t,” he offered, his expression serious. He was prepared for this; he knew how to take care of others, especially “children” as this moment might call for. Henry knew a little about Ethiriel as it was, thanks to the conversation he had with Leo a few weeks before, so he was at least mostly prepared to take care of her. He had prepared the house with her special foods and various different sight points so that she could make her way around without trouble – far more than Leo ever had.
His nerves were not about taking care of the Raeven at all, they were all from his screw up.
Ethiriel didn’t mind the silence as Lazarus watched her every move, her fingers tingling from how smooth the doctor’s skin was. Once she finished exploring his features, she allowed her palm to rest gently on his cheek.
His words were calming, his voice sounding much more gentle than before. She took it with grace, closing her eyes and taking a deep, silent breath.
”I had heard that the search for him had been perilous,” said the female Frei, turning her head toward Laz despite her inability to find him through sight. Ethiriel’s rune thrummed in sympathy. She then turned her attention back to Kyou, her head tilted to one side, resting on her shoulder.
The silence was short before she spoke, ”I am most apologetic to hear that, Lazarus. If only it were his way of showing affection.”
The Sigel was met with silence again, his question swimming in Ethiriel’s mind. How did she feel? Her expression faltered, no longer neutral as her brows knit tightly together, her eyes barely open. ”Truly awful. I must have done something to make Sir Leonard question my presence in his life. I am no longer wanted…”
Tears stung her eyes for the first time in her life.

Sighing deeply, Jeremy picks up his cup of tea that was quickly getting cold, and finished it in one gulp, taking a quiet moment to calm his own nerves as well. "Anyway, our business here is done." He said as he placed down his empty cup, without making another move to fill it up again. "I'm going to file these documents." His tone of voice switched back to his normally pleasant one as he picked up the folder. "You could stick around and finish your tea, have some more to finish the pot if you want to. You can probably find Lazarus and Ethiriel in Kyou's room in the back, across the lab. He will see you out." And with that, Jeremy left the two grown man to their own devices.
Lazarus was pretty sure that what they faced in the jungle was way worst than 'perilous'. But he chose to not comment on the incident as he felt it was in the past, and should remain that way. This reminded him though that Ethiriel was indeed absent for the whole debacle, she did not have to go through what other Raevans and people went through. However, instead of feeling bitter about it, he found himself feeling relieved instead. At least one Raevan was not scarred from the incident.
The Sigel knew it would be risky to ask Ethiriel the question about her feelings, but he knew that she shouldn't keep them bottled up like this. She looked like the quiet type that would do this too. It would feel infinitely better to let it all out, tell the truth to someone that would listen. It will make you feel infinitely better.
His heart sank when she finally expressed her feelings, her expression pained and her voice trembling just a little bit. Lazarus felt a bit bad that he nearly made her cry, but he keep telling himself inside that it's for the better. Feeling a little awkward, but also feeling compelled to comfort her, he reached over and gingerly placed a warm hand on her shoulder. "It's not your fault..." He whispered softly.
