Sam had always hated chores. No matter how much he enjoyed doing something, the instant someone else required it of him, it became a chore. So when one of the clan females demanded that he purge the world of any urshund within a sixty mile radius of their home, Sam scowled. He'd already proven that he could take out a large group of them before they could cause any lasting damage and before anyone was hurt. They were safe here. Sam was sure of it. But he was the only one. Everyone else felt like their security had been breached. Like their home was no longer safe. And apparently, the only way to put the Khehoras' minds at ease was to personally go and see to it that these tunneling beasts were put out of commission.

Sam found it annoying. He tried to argue that no matter how he searched, he'd never be able to find all of them. And even if he somehow did, by Abronaxus's grace, that wouldn't stop others from moving into the newly opened territory. Going on this type of slaughter hunt was pointless. It would be better if he simply went at it on his leisure. If the urshund came too close, he could finish them. If he spotted them while flying around with Azure, he could dispatch of them then too...

But no. His clan was not interested in that answer at all. They wanted him out and actively hunting these dangerous creatures. For the Orakoi, they insisted. Sam had never felt so frustrated with their refusal to listen to him. He was their leader. Why couldn't they just believe what he was trying to say without a fuss? His grandest efforts yielded nothing. Nothing except continued berating from his clan. It came to the point when Sam decided he should just agree and leave. Leave and come back days into the future. Maybe things would be calmer when he returned. He could even tell them he'd slain many urshund and helped defend his home for months to come.

The only thing that really agitated Sam about it was that he couldn't abandon his pets for that long. They could hunt on their own, yes, but Sam didn't want to leave them in the hands of his clan mates for any amount of time. They'd probably start to fear that he'd left them forever. What if Azure and Phalfa started fighting again? No, he couldn't leave them alone. He'd have to take the whole group with him. Azure was used to flying at his side. Even if he didn't return home, she would stay at his side.

The same could be said for Ruei, his tiny fae dragon. She was a lazy creature, who didn't crave Sam's attention anywhere near as much as Azure or Phalfa. She was content to doze in the sun and didn't do much to annoy either of the others. She wouldn't be pleased about flying for any length of time, so Sam would have to carry her. She was certainly small enough, and would drape easily around his neck without causing trouble for him.

It was Phalfa that Sam was the most worried about. As a bird, her desire to fly free was strong. Despite being well-trained, Sam was still under the assumption that she would flutter away (perhaps unknowingly) if given the chance. He couldn't have her getting distracted over the next few days and wandering off. So... He packed her. During his time in Serenia, Sam had obtained a sizable messenger bag. It was kind of annoying to fly with, but if it would keep Phalfa at his side, he'd endure. It wasn't as if he needed it for anything else. Not food or clothes or bathing supplies.

He lined the bottom of it with dried grasses from the valley, packed two small round toys (one for Azure, so they wouldn't have to share), then approached Phalfa. She'd watched him curiously from her stone cage, tipping her head this way and that and flicking her tail feathers at him. He picked her up, placing his hands on either side of her body to hold her wings down. She didn't protest, but craned her neck up to quirk a brow as if to say 'Really?' Sam smiled apologetically as he placed her in the open and waiting bag. She chirped, and as he released her, she gave her wings a rustle to get a bit more comfortable. She flicked her tail feathers out the back of the bag and crooked her neck over the front. All in all, she seemed... comfortable. Phalfa didn't resist when he snapped the flip of cloth closed, so that only her head and tail feathers remained free.

Well, good. Maybe it wouldn't be such a bad trip, after all... He scooped Ruei to her place around his neck, and 'tsk'ed to bring Azure to attention at his side. The young Vlidean scampered over to him, fanning her wings in preparation for takeoff. Sam cast one last fleeting look around his cave. With any luck, he hadn't forgotten anything... Although, as he gazed at his companions around him, it seemed as if he had everything important. He delicately picked up the messenger bag with Phalfa, looping it across his shoulder without disturbing Ruei. "Alright, everyone. Let's go see what adventures await." With that, he kicked into the air, with Azure following behind with an eager trill.

The flight was easy, quiet, and uneventful. As Sam had desperately hoped for in some ways, and loathed in others. He'd mentally pleaded with Abronaxus that his pets would be well-behaved with one another. He'd also hoped that maybe he'd run into a few urshund... Just so that him leaving would be worth something, if not everything his clan hoped for. But besides how Azure would fly between his wings and try to rest against his back (so that she could be touching him like the others), and Sam would have to swat her away, all was painfully boring.

He didn't want to be too far from his clan. Although, he didn't want to be so close that any Khehora could spot him in they ventured a little farther than usual while hunting. So it would probably be best if he tucked himself close to the rocky cliffs. Maybe even tunnel out a cave for himself that he could call home for the coming moons. His pets would probably appreciate that as well. So Sam glided along the outer edge of the mountains, scouring for a good spot that wasn't particularly visible, but still caught the sun, so he and Azure could sunbathe if they were feeling lazy. From the options he was given, it looked like he'd have to make his own...

But that shouldn't be a problem. The Gaili landed near the western rim of the mountain range (so the sun wouldn't wake him up terribly early in the morning) and found a little niche with a cute patch of greenery poking from overhead. Ruei would probably love that... There was a nice rock off to the side that Azure could preen on, and the overhang wasn't so large that Sam would have to leave his cave to sun. All that was missing was, well, the cave.

So Sam set to it. He set Phalfa's bag down on the ground behind him and slipped Ruei from around his neck to lay her limply across the top of it. Azure sat attentively at it's side, keeping her bright eyes on Sam as he bent, moved, and tunneled through the earth, scouring out a shallow cave for them to nest in. He hardly noticed as a rumbling approached them. Tunneling was labor-intensive work. For all he knew, it was just himself making the earth quiver. He was certainly shoveling enough rocks out of this crevice to make the mountain tremble...

When he was done, he stepped back, dusted his hands, and grinned, satisfied with his work. It was Azure's screeching that had him turning back to face her. She'd hoped up from the ground, latched her claws around the strap of the messenger back, and was flapping frantically, desperate to get the sack of the ground while Phalfa writhed. It was then that Sam realized the earth was still shaking. Not the mountain, but the very ground beneath his feet. He growled and dove, snapping Azure, Phalfa, and Ruei up in his grasp as the head-end of a strange-looking Urshund breached the ground.

To protect his companions, it would have to die. Without dropping the animals, Sam jumped into the air, spun, and crashed his foot down onto the head of the beast. As it sunk into oblivion, another, and another, and another, and another emerged. They'd all have to be taken out. Brutally. Quickly. Efficiently. he didn't want the cave he'd just worked so hard on the be ruined! Three of the four remaining beasts went down without too much effort. Sam was able to use his earthen abilities to crush, smash, scrunch, and demolish them. But as he sunk a large, sharp earthen spire into one of the beast's heads, he felt the earth's shudders weakening.

Sam's eyes narrowed. "It's trying to escape!"

Escape was not an option Sam could allow. But it was also exceptionally challenging for him to be effective in combat while he was clinging to these three animals. Azure especially didn't like the way Sam's scaly arms ruffled her feathers as he moved. She grumbled and hissed her discontentment until he set her down. She instant flopped onto her bottom and began to preen. The Gaili rolled his eyes. "Don't get comfortable." He warned. "We've got to go take down that beast." He was pretty sure Azure huffed in annoyance, but he didn't have time to fight her. Instead, he set the messenger bag down carefully, trying his best not to agitate poor Phalfa any further.

"Hey, there, girl..." He cooed as he undid the latch. This was the part he was worried about. Phalfa could very well be spooked and try to fly off. Her eyes were certainly wide enough for it... She squirmed a bit impatiently as Sam picked her up and squaked softly at him for this poor treatment. He gently turned her gaze toward his. She huffed indignantly. "I can't carry you, so I'm trusting you to stay at my side." He informed her, only slightly feeling like an imbecile for speaking to a creature like this. He stared at her until she fluttered her wings impatiently, bursting from his hold and hovering near his shoulder. "Azure, you're on guard duty." He informed the vlidean. Of all his pets, he was pretty sure the pompous and glistening vlidean understood him the best. She cawed in acknowledgment. With a nod of approval, Sam scooped the tiny Ruei up and laced her about his neck. He doubted she'd get in the way.

"Alright team, let's do this." he commanded, kicking briskly into the air. Azure and Phalfa followed in a stream of feathers behind him. They had to fly quickly. Catching up to the tunnelers would not be easy. And from the air, they weren't readily identifiable. But Sam didn't doubt his skills in the slightest. He'd had time for that when he was younger. Besides, his companion's animal instinct far outshown his own sense of sight.

Azure shrieked after they'd flown only a few miles. She sped ahead of Sam and dove toward the ground before pulling up sharply and returning to Phalfa's side. Sam saw nothing but the ground. But if that was where Azure said it was... He turned and shot her a questioning look, to which she only tilted her head. Well. He didn't have much to lose anyway. With a roar, he cannoned himself at the ground, diving into the earth like it was made of water. It split around him, groaning and rumbling until it was just a gash of a crater.

In the center was the dismantled body of an urshund, crushed and bleeding and already in pieces. But ahead... Sam could just make out the tail end of one slipping through a tunnel and out of view. He had to follow it. Sam dove down the tunnel. It wasn't large enough for him to fly in, but he propelled himself with bursts on rock, shooting forward until the tail was in his sight again. With a howl of victory, he extended his arms and punched either side of the walls around him. It sent a powerful reverberation echoing down the length of the gorger, until a boulder blasted forth and splattered its head. Sam gave it a nudge to be certain that it was dead, then headed back out to make sure that his pets were still awaiting him.

Azure was chattering delightedly when Sam peeked out from the tunnel. She glided down into the crater to meet him, and it seemed like she'd wanted to give him an affectionate nuzzle until she realized that he was covered in urshund body goo. She glared at him as she circled, before settling on tapping her beak against his head to show her devotion. To Sam it seemed more like she was trying to punish him... But never mind that. Phalfa flew gracefully down next, draping her feathers around him as she settled on his shoulder and nudged her head into his neck. "You both must have been worried to be acting this way." He chuckled as he rubbed Phalfa's cheek. She cooed in delight. But Sam could only shake his head in amusement. These two probably weren't used to seeing something as small as Sam take down something as large as an urshund (besides the first time he'd done it, anyway).

"Let's head back to the cave for now. We'll start setting up our home fort." He advised, knowing full well that his animal companions probably didn't understand what he was saying. They followed him nonetheless, and Sam started to wonder why he'd been worried about Phalfa in the first place. They flew across the dunes, with Sam glancing down at his and the animals' shadows every so often. Of course they moved and wavered across the mounds of sand and dirt, but sometimes, it almost looked as if they shuddered. The edges seemed more jagged than they should...

He whistled and came to a stop, commanding his pets to do the same. Azure and Phalfa came to a halt, fluttering in the air in confusion. Azure could usually sense the urshund, but she didn't seem to notice anything now. Maybe Sam was just imagining things...? Ruei coiled up tightly around his neck, raising her head as he slowly descended back to the ground, amidst the dunes. She turned to chirp softly into his ear, and then Sam felt the tremors. So it wasn't a lie then! He glanced up to Azure, watched her circle Phalfa and call out loudly. Maybe she just needed to be asked to point them out. He couldn't expect her to know when he wanted her input. He rolled his eyes. So there were more urshund here. More for him to take out.

Sam cracked his knuckles and braced himself on the ground. From below, they could feel his presence, they just had to dive up, and...! Sam felt the first nearing the surface. He felt it thrust itself upward to breach through the sand as the Gaili leaped away, sending a spray of sandy grains out to pierce through it, coating it in tiny, painful holes. It took a moment to writhe and bemoan its ails, and when it did, Sam cut it down. The other must've realized it was outmatched, because it didn't come anywhere as close to the surface as the first, so the Gaili spent several minutes trying to crush it from above, by slamming his fist into the ground and sending shock wave after shock wave or earth crushing into it. It felt like forever when the beast finally succumbed...

After all was said and done, the Gaili returned to his makeshift cave. Once he and his pets were settled, he realized he'd forgotten something... "The Crystal Lumina." Sam griped. How was he to become a good scythe wielder if he never had his weapon?! Maybe next time...
