Today was going to be the best day of Gwyn's student career.
But not for school-related reasons.
Even though she tried to remain studious to please her coven back home, her mind was always scheming up the next best prank. She'd practiced one particular routine a dozen times in her head already and was waiting for the perfect chance to act it out. She called it The Injured Hare Routine. Brilliant name. Brilliant idea. And she was determined to pull it off.
It was a chilly day, partly due to the patches of dark clouds that hung overhead. Short October was nearing its end, which was just perfect because it established a lovely mood for her set-up. A dark and depressing day for a dark and depressing deed (only it wouldn't really be depressing--it would be hilarious).
Her preparation spot that afternoon was behind a cluster of fat, dead trees beside a walkway. It was a nice place to shift because it kept her hidden, and even nicer because she could dart right out to a path--all within practically a second. Sheer brilliance. This was going to be one for the books, she could feel it. But she had to actually find a target first...
As if on mental command, Gwyn heard what sounded like clanking footsteps just around the bend of the path and out of her view; slow-sounding enough that she knew she had time to execute her plan.
Good giddy odd! Adrenaline surged through her veins and she felt her face being attacked by an uncontrollable smile. Everything to follow happened in rapid succession--she didn't have much time. She clutched at cold dirt with shaky fingers and slammed her eyes shut. A few moments of focus later, it was done--magic. She was a hare.
In only two big-footed bounces, she was upon the middle of the path. She flopped onto her side, skewed her legs about, crinkled an ear, and deflated her lungs slightly. Her back foot was pointing up slightly and twitched feebly, while her tiny voice box made sporadic, pathetic chirring sounds. And so she waited.
Great ghost, she was brilliant.
