He always wanted to pronounce her name exactly as it appeared on paper: Mallay-dih. MALL-aid-silenth. It didn't look like Molly but --

Lance was wasting time. He sighed as his weapon brought his attention back to the focus, his hand absently rubbing the purple ribbon tied around his arm. That was right; he had something for her to do. She was the Safety Specialist after all. Lance picked up his phone and wondered what the other specialists were in his division. It was embarrassing to admit that he had already forgotten them, however considering how fickle some of the Mists were --

Lance shut that train of thought down quickly as he texted Molly, summoning her.

Molly -
Please come see me in my office. Bring any of your Specialist things, or at the very least a notebook. I want to go over some things with you.

- Lance

Admittedly Molly was in a bit of a panic when she received that text. Getting summoned by a Division Lead, much less her Division Lead was always a quick way to get her anxiety going. She hoped she wasn’t getting summoned because she’d been slacking or doing something bad! That was always a worry. Regardless, Molly grabbed her large box which contained all the instruction manuals she had collected so far, as well as her notebooks for all the shadowing and questioning she’d been doing.

Thus the intermediate trainee appeared with her large box in arms. “H-hello, sir!”

Molly's hurried entrance drew a raised eyebrow from Lance. "You can slow down, you know. Unless a text says it's an emergency or it's from Caelius you don't need to rush. Go ahead and set the box down." He gestured towards his desk, indicating where she could set it down.

Lance shifted in his seat awkwardly as Molly settled herself in. "How," he began with a slight stutter, "How have you been doing?"

Molly briefly looked like a deer in the headlights at that comment. “O-oh…!” She smiled sheepishly. “It’s just…well…um…I didn’t want to dilly dally and keep you waiting, sir! Ah, thank you so much!” She was rather grateful to place the box down, and gingerly placed it on his desk, righting it just so before she clasped her hands over her stomach.

“Ah, I’m good! Thank you for asking!” She seemed a bit more at ease now, and smiled softly. “How are you, sir?”

She’d seriously regret not paying even a bit more attention to current events.

Her question lead the division leader to run a hand over his face, over his red-rimmed eyes and across the growing scruff of his unshaven face. "I've been through hell," was said with as much enthusiasm as I've been better. "Nevada's weapon is broken. There's nothing the goddamn techs can do. She's slowly wasting away."

He sat up a little straighter, leaning forward. "The least we can do is make sure something like this doesn't happen again. What do you have so far?" Lance reached into the box and pulled out some of the manuals, waiting for her to begin as he skimmed through them.

This was what Molly got for more or less being in her own little world…sudden and devastating news. She looked pretty shocked, her eyes going wide. Sure, she’d been hearing people gossip around about something…but gossip was something Molly tended to ignore, and she rarely checked the Twitters so…hearing it from Lance really was the first she knew about this…

Oh no…

She opened her mouth to say something, anything, but all she could muster was a very soft. “I’m sorry.” Luckily, she had something requested of her, to stop her from awkwardly stumbling over this subject, and Molly snapped to attention, putting on hold any questioning she might have done.

“Ah…yes…” She cleared her throat, fiddling anxiously with her hands. “I’ve collected different manuals for equipment from different divisions…um…the standard items like the items we get from training courses…some of the manuals seem good, but some…not so much?” Like for some of the newer equipment, obviously.

“I also have been shadowing and questioning different full rank hunters from different divisions and…um…I feel that…” Here, her brows knitted, and her voice grew a bit quiet. “I feel that…there isn’t a strong grasp on protocols and procedures and…well…a lot of the equipment…” She didn’t like delivering not so good news…but it was part of the job she wanted, right?

"You're right. There isn't." Lance said quietly. He flipped open a manual and looked through it, shaking his head and closing it. "The Life Division prefers to keep the information to itself and hoard it. Sun's too busy bleeding against Halloween, Moon's too busy patching the Suns back up. Death Division is usually chasing after artifacts and spying on other divisions. Us?"

Lance leaned back, arms thrown out in a vague gesture to indicate them both. "We're left scrounging at the edges trying to cobble s**t together. Given how the Divisions are set up, there isn't anyone to write this stuff out. Nor is there anyone to enforce it. We just need to pick up the pieces and cobble together what we can."

"What you have here is a start," he added as he tapped the manuals in front of him. "I want more Mists greenlit for runics and carrying them more often. The issue is getting them to complete the courses. Any ideas for a sort of motivator? I don't want a repeat of what happened to Nevada to happen to anyone else in the division ever again." As he spoke he absently touched the purple ribbon tied around his arm; one of Nevada's hair ribbons that he wore as a reminder.

Molly didn’t get it. If they were on the same team working towards the same thing, then why didn’t they gather their knowledge from the same pool? She looked pretty distressed at the thought, and then baffled when Lance said the Death Division used resources to spy on other divisions. Well that seemed…um…not really…productive…

The trainee nodded her head, curls bouncing a bit before she gasped softly. Wait…no one to write this stuff up? Was that something she could do…? No, wait…wasn’t Taym working on an info pool that should be accessible to all hunters? Molly’s brows furrowed. Oh dear. She wasn’t sure. Molly snapped out of her thoughts, a bit panicked she might have missed something Lance said…Oh…how to motivate trainees? This also baffled Molly…shouldn’t they already be motivated because it was their job? Apparently not…She thought back to how she would motivate her younger sister to do something, and then looked horrified. These weren’t children Lance was talking about (even if they did act like children more often than not)…so it wasn’t like she could approach it like that. Suggesting that they reward someone for doing their job and wanting to be safe seemed…

Silly.

But then again…

“Um…” Molly paused, her brows furrowed. “Maybe…for those that get…um…maybe…at least three runics…reward them with another day of…leave?” She sounded very unsure as she offered this idea. “Or…make it a requirement to be promoted?” Yeah, she wasn’t sure if these sounded good at all… She watched as Lance touched the ribbon on his arm, and her lips pulled down into a frown. She wanted to ask him something, but she didn’t feel the confidence to do it, especially since it was such a heavy subject.

As Molly made her suggestions, Lance drew forth a piece of paper and began to jot her suggestions down. "Maybe," he said after a pause. "People are beginning to grow complacent and forget that lives are at stake, and that we're here to protect humanity. Even if we have to resort to bribery..."

Lance rubbed his face. "Even with a runic it won't guarantee their safety on the field. If they get approved for it there's no telling whether or not they'll be able to use it. Shadowing someone more experienced might work, but given some of the hunters on island..." He sighed, throwing his hands in the air. "What do you make of all this?"

Bribery…that’s what didn’t sit right with her. One hand left her stomach to tap on her bottom lip, both anxiously and to try and help her think. This was hard. She didn’t know the right answer, much less one that sounded reasonable and thought out. She wasn’t good at being put on the spot, but she didn’t want to let Lance down, either.

Molly was quiet for a while, struggling to come up with an idea, her eyes darting left and right as she thought. “I…maybe…we could start with…training seminars…on making sure trainees know how to properly use runics?” Once again her suggestion was quiet, unsure. “And…maybe, too…” She paused, and immediately looked guilty for having the thought of using Nevada as an example as to why trainees should properly learn how to protect themselves. She immediately felt terrible for thinking that…like it was exploiting the poor girl and her circumstances but it was exactly why they didn’t want it to happen.

“…Um…s-sir?” Molly squeaked. “How…um…w-what happened to cause Miss Nevada’s…?” Horrible circumstances.

"Maybe," he agreed quietly, "Getting people to attend them and remember what we went over now... That's the tricky part."

Molly's question made the division leader close his eyes. I did it; I'm responsible for her death. Doesn't matter that she's alive now. For all intentions, she died as soon as I -- "Her weapon was broken," by me. "By a creature from Halloween. If a hunter dies, the weapon can bond again. But if the weapon dies, the human..." He trailed off, opening his eyes to face Molly. "What's left can only linger until the body finally perishes. She was my daughter you know. In another life. Adopted but still mine and I couldn't protect her."

Molly nodded her head a bit in agreement. Yes, it would be…though she’d hope they’d remember…especially if they showed up in the first place.

The trainee went silent though as Lance explained what happened and while the news had been heavy before, it became worse upon hearing what happened and what would happen exactly. A creature of Halloween destroyed her weapon…and she was going to die because of it. Briefly, the hand over her stomach clenched, though it relaxed and her expression softened immensely as Lance spoke further. She didn’t know he held such a close bond and regard for Nevada…

“I…I’m sorry, sir.” She murmured, and after a moment added. “I understand how you feel.” She didn’t know if it would help, but they had a shared burden, so she hoped that maybe he’d be comforted, a tiny bit, if someone else was going through what he was. She knew what it was like. "I-if...there's anything I can do for you aside from the safety specialization...please...just let me know."

The gesture was appreciated. He doubted that she really, truly know what he was going through. It was his fault and Nevada was paying for it. Then again, what did he know? The lives of the trainees that served under him were a mystery to him. He wasn't their father, he was their leader.

...But weren't fathers supposed to protect their children?

A shakey breath was drawn and held in as Lance closed his eyes, struggling to regain control of himself. "We need to make sure this doesn't happen again," he said at last. "We need to try and keep them safe. To at least give everyone the tools they need to stay alive. This... What happened to Nevada should never happen again."

The silence was crushing, and Molly didn’t have the nerve or courage to speak up again until Lance did. Though all she was able to reply with a feeble and quiet “Yes, sir.” Before she fell silent again, her brows knitted with worry and thought. She didn’t know what else could be done to prevent what happened. Maybe a seminar to inform hunters to be more cautious and protective of their weapons? She wasn’t sure…

“…Sir?” Molly finally spoke up again. “…Is…there anything more we can hunters? More…tools?” Maybe what they had just wasn’t…working either.

Lance shook his head slowly. "What good would more tools do if they don't get them in the first place? I- I'm partly to blame." His tone took on a pleading tone, "In an emergency there's no time to grab anything except from what you've prepared ahead of time. Sometimes you don't get a warning before you're thrust into the thick of things. I... I didn't give Nevada a chance when it was time. I wanted to make sure she was ready. I didn't --"

Lance stopped himself, gripping the desk tightly as he forced a deep breath. "Pendant. Molly, do you still have a hunter pendant? Does it still work?"
