The texts were completely unexpected, and it took Sasha quite some time to formulate a response.

Kostya slowly flipped through the pages of a book. Something by Nabokov, one that Obadiah had given him.

It was difficult, and he made little progress in the time it took to receive a reply.

Barn on outskirt of field, blue and also old. Meet there in 1 hour?

Kostya arrived thirty minutes early, as he did for any function that allowed for it. He was in his new coat, and the gold of the sickles gleamed when they caught the light.

A new division, a new purpose, a new start.

Sasha did not send a response.

She arrived ten minutes early and looked a little surprised to see Kostya there waiting for her. The jacket was given an approving nod; she'd never entertained the thought of transferring Divisions, but Death looked good on Kostya.

All hungry smiles, approached the other hunter with a slow, soft step that belied the curiosity that clawed at her gut.

"Kostya. Congratulations on your transfer."

Enough small talk.

"Your text surprised me. I'm very interested in what you have to say."

Kostya's face was the same as it always was: defocused. He stared through Sasha as she approached, rather than at her.

She moved like the night, soft and silent. Small in stature, but not to be underestimated. Anyone that William wasn't allowed to spar with, through force of fiancé, had to be a formidable opponent, and if it wasn't strength she had in spades, it was surely cleverness.

He nodded at Sasha's sentiments, focusing on her with the tiniest of smiles, his eyes still empty.

"Am afraid have to apologise," he said, lightly, "for mislead you."

America was his President-- kind and just and fair-- but sometimes you needed a queen, one who was willing to be the one to say 'Off with her head' if it came down to it. Kostya didn't know if Sasha was the type, or truly, anything about her, apart from whispered rumours and occasional tales of what she used to be like.

The woman that stood before him was not the girl that she once was.

"Have no enemies," Kostya said, with his smile widening slightly, "but now know you have vun." Without a word, he made eye contact with Sasha, and stood at attention.

He'd been a soldier first and foremost, his first taste of power, of authority to be respected. It was on her, now, to see if she understood.

Sasha was slightly taken aback by Kostya's apology, and there was an instant surge of something horrid and black and foul that rose in her throat like sick-sweet bile. It was gone nearly as quickly as it had risen, assuaged by Kostya's next comment.

She tilted her head at him, curious now, her thoughts moving rapidly. She'd never really had someone who would do her bidding, and it was a taste of great power. It was thrilling, delightful, beautiful; she could feel it from the tips of her toes to the crown of her raven-haired head. It was a drug, and she tapped the vein, let it course through her like a wicked, gorgeous poison.

Sasha narrowed her eyes at Kostya.

"I do. I very much do. And I'm sure you also know how intelligent this enemy is."

She pursed her lips and slid a little closer. Her voice was raw and dark and low, eyes keen on his empty gaze.

"What else do you know, Kostya?"

Sasha stopped just before she came into contact with the man.

"Tell me."

A whisper, an order, a blatant demand. A muscle at the corner of her eye ticked, and Sasha eased her features into a smile that was too feral to be welcoming, too ugly to be friendly, too black to be inviting.

"What do you know, Kostya?"

She was thinking, which was good.

"Apologies," he said again, "but do not know vhich enemy you are thinking of."

He hadn't seen Mimsy in a long time, after tapered off attempts to return her friendship had faded into nothing. It was what Robert had warned him about, and Kostya was a dogged sort, but months of stonewalling had taken its toll. In his obedience's stead now lived a bitterness, for his loyalty towards her and her demands. He resented her that it existed, that it would not break like a brittle twig in winter.

But it only extended to her directly.

Perhaps he no longer would feel the need to stand in front of the rising tide.

"I only know vhat have gleam from tvitter, and from time vhen you vere a sveet girl." A pause, not that long, and then he dipped his head in subservience.

(He rises, he calls. A swelling storm.)

"But you are not being very sveet anymore, da?"

"Things change, Kostya. Sometimes they worsen," Sasha placed her hand on her hip, cocking it ever so slightly.

Look at me.

"And sometimes, Kostya, things change for the better."

Look at me.

"Being sweet can get you many things. Some are worthless; friends, for example. But," Sasha paused, moved closer, traced the gold trim on his jacket, "knowing how to use that sweetness, how to manipulate, well."

Look. At. Me.

"That will get you so much more."

She leaned in to Kostya, her voice a mere whisper - as if she were about to divulge a great secret.

"I don't need friends, Kostya. What I need is something much more valuable. What I need is someone to listen. Someone to be my ears, my eyes. You understand?"

Sasha pulled away from the Russian. Her expression was dark, wicked.

"I would never abandon you, Kostya. You would be far too valuable to me. Perhaps I could be valuable to you, as well."

He looked at her, and knew that he didn't have to share her ideals to partner with her.

"Have approximate one point three percent interest in being friend to you, Miss Belrose," Kostya said, softly. "But have interest in serving."

I would never abandon you. Her words cut into the insecurities that nestled around his heart, cold as it was, and Syntax chirped that she seemed dangerous, blaring radioactive signals and an air raid siren. But it was the kind he wanted to get closer to, hands to the glass and face too, eager for a look.

What would happen? Uncompiled code, results unknown. Please recompile.Kostya's lips quirked into a smile, curved into something tranquil and excellent.

"I come vith strings," he said, not missing the heat of her body, but acknowledging it, swaying ever so slightly towards her as she pulled away. "But, to be eye, and to be ears? Very easy, can do. I understand." He tilted his head. "My value in you is somevun to follow, who possess capability to be ruthless."

(Too many masters and the hound gets confused-- too many masters, but there is only one that holds the leash and choke collar. The chains rustle. Wings rustle. In a dream, far away, Kostya wears a crown of--)

"I am loyal."

When Kostya spoke of strings, Sasha's lips twitched in the slightest smile. She'd been expecting strings; his offer of subservience was far too good to be true. Even still, Sasha giggled softly, twirling away from Kostya before turning to face him again.

"Ruthless." The word was deliciously tart on her tongue, and Sasha's smile grew in size. Ruthless. Yes, she could be ruthless. She could do what needed to be done in order to get where she wanted to be. Kostya was loyal; that was a trait that could be utilized. That was a trait that was priceless to Sasha.

Loyalty was difficult to come by.

"I can be ruthless. I am not afraid. I have goals. But I have to worry, Kostya." Sasha moved to lean against the door of the barn. "These strings, will they pose a problem? A threat? Perhaps we should speak of these strings. I would hate for them to knot, to trip you up, to hinder you when I call for you."

She was silent for a moment, tilting her head back just slightly before speaking again.

"There may be a time where you will no longer simply be my eyes and ears. There may be a time when you are my fist, my weapon, my booted heel, Kostya. You speak of loyalty."

Sasha paused, and slipped closer to him. She reached out, index finger extended and placed beneath his chin; a purveyor of flesh, interested in the quality of his stock. Clean lines, clear eyes, loyalty.

"I must be cautious, you understand. I have to know how deep that loyalty will go. I have to be sure, Kostya. I have to be certain. How far will you go for me, Kostya?"

He had looked into the eyes of a dying man and said goodbye to him before taking away his suffering.

The eyes of anyone instilled nothing in him, now, except mild intrigue and fascination. Sasha smiled, and she was beautiful in the way a sharpened dagger was, all edges and danger and a looming threat

"America vill not be involved in any of goals," he said, "non-negotiable. Her vorld is not so same as yours, da? So is no vorry." He waved a hand. "Not of concern."

Mimsy hovered on the tip of his tongue.

He made no move of resistance as she manoeuvred his face, an obedient animal awaiting the direction of its owner.

Without blinking, Kostya replied: "Vhatever is necessary, vill be done."

Sasha waved her hand, a dismissive gesture.

"I have no interest in America. I have no interest in the things she does, or what she seeks, or whatever childish games she plays with you or Jan or anyone else. Her world is different than mine, da," Sasha agreed, idly reaching to her side to loop a long tendril of black hair about her wrist.

"I will not ask you to part from your friends, from your toys. I would only ask that you come when beckoned, Kostya. Keep your eyes and ears open, and report back to me whatever you think might be interesting. Text me, tweet me - whatever you feel most comfortable with, mon petit chien."

She released his face and crossed her arms over her chest in such a way that allowed her to toy with the long, silky swathe of hair twined about her.

"Forgive me for asking, but there has to be some benefit for you. You need someone to serve, which is understandable. But what else is there, Kostya?"
