There was something especially pleasant about flying today, but he couldn't quite put his hoof on it. The sky was really not that perfect, it was a bit cloudy and a little too warm, so that could not be it. He was feeling a bit tired, not uncomfortably so but enough to know that the pleasantness wasn't a physical thing. So what was it? Korev frowned, his wings sweeping through the cool puffs of little breezes, each a brief respite from the sun's heat, as he pondered. Then he snorted. Of course. It was the quiet. No nuisances up here, not even any birds at the moment. It was just him, and some nice, quiet solitude for a change.
Of course, the moment he thought that his stomach growled and his throat let him know it was dry and really, really wanted a drink. He could have growled with frustration, because somehow he knew, he just knew that as soon as his hooves hit the ground that would be the end of his nice, lonely day. Why? Because he'd just begun to appreciate how nice it was being alone and peaceful and quiet, so of course all that was about to be ripped away. Because that was just how the world worked.
Well, he'd give the lousy world a good swift kick in the hindquarters if that was what it was up to now. In the mean time, there was bound to be water somewhere down there, far too much lush green grass for there not to be. Korev searched the ground below for the telltale glint, allowing himself a brief grin when he spotted one. Trees could be a help when it came to sources of water, they never seemed to grow happily where there wasn't a good supply. Plus, a little bonus, that meant it was a shady little creek. It might be nice to relax for a while, have a cool drink, eat some fresh green grass, lay in the shade... He had to keep moving eventually of course. Always had to keep pressing forward. But maybe, just a tiny teeny maybe, if the little shady spot by the creek were as empty as it seemed, his lovely, peaceful, quiet, lonely day might not be brought to a quick and irritating end.
Yeah. And maybe his antlers would sprout flowers in the spring. But whatever. It could happen.
On that cheerful note, Korev angled his wings and plummeted to the ground. He landed perhaps a little bit harder than he meant to, but he followed it up with stomping the ground for good measure. It helped get the surprised tingling feeling out of his legs, that was all. Ruffling his wings back out of the way, he trotted to go and help himself to the shady little creek. He was going to enjoy this while it lasted, and when it got ruined someone would definitely pay for the world's insistence on annoying him at any and every opportunity.

And today a very particular mare would quiet willingly be playing the world's messenger.
It couldn't have been any longer than a week since Mariam had stormed away from the lake and left her family behind. But already she was riding high on the sudden freedom she had. No one around to fuss at her about wandering too far, no one around to tell her to keep away from other Soquili, no one around to tell her she didn't need to fly.
Why do you need to fly when you can swim? Swimming's more fun anyways.
Mariam's head bobbed side-to-side as she mimicked her mother's voice in her head. Why did she need to fly? Because she had wings! What other reason did she need? She was the only one of her siblings with the feathery appendages and she couldn't even use them. At least Rion and Lea had all their Kelpi traits to help them swim faster. The only Kelpi traits she'd gotten were thick skin and sharp teeth. And those weren't event that great! Her skin always got so dried out during the summer months and those sharp teeth meant eating grass was a delicate and precise art. She couldn't count the number of times she'd managed to bite her tongue in the process. It just wasn't fair! If Rion and Lea got to use all of their cool fins and stuff, she should be allowed to use her wings. After all, she wasn't the one who was scared of heights. Her mother's fear shouldn't hinder her from doing something that should have been natural. It was just stupid.
And that's why she was here. In the middle of who-knows-where, lost and alone. She'd be lying if she said she didn't miss home. Mostly her brother and father. They had always quietly supported her desire to fly, but her mother was stubborn and quite intimidating for her small stature. And so no one really pushed the matter. No one except Mariam, of course.
All of that hardly mattered now, though. There was nothing standing in her way of learning how to fly now. Absolutely nothing...Except the fact that she didn't have anyone to teach her. Even after nearly a week of wandering aimlessly, Mariam hadn't come across a single winged Soquili to be her teacher. It was starting to get infuriating. Mariam wanted to know how to fly and she wanted to know. Right. Now. And as she thought about exactly how infuriating it was her footfalls became heavier and heavier as she plodded along, stomping the ground mercilessly. The scene was not unlike a child throwing a temper tantrum. In all honesty, that's exactly what it was. She was an indignant child out to prove her mother wrong. And oh how she would prove her wrong. Yes, just look at her proving that awful mare wrong by stomping right into the creek and nearly tripping face first into the water.
Mariam managed to recover with about as much grace as a newborn kitten. And she was only half soaked to boot! Not too bad. As she stood up straight and tried to retain some amount of dignity she caught sight of a beautiful thing. A pair of dark, feathery wings connected to a Soquili. She was so happy she could have squealed. In fact, it's quite possible she actually did.
