xxENRYO SUGAWARA "They laughed at my quirkiness. I laughed at their cremations." ________________________________________________ .. Basic Criteria
Name | Sugawara Enryo deeesu~ Alias| Firecracker, Hanabi, Shiranui, The Blazing Pyrotechnist. Call me Hanabi and I will invariably punch you. Gender | Do I look like a girl to you?The correct answer is "no". Race | Shinigami Affiliations | Thirteenth Division Rank Held | Third Seat
.. _______________________ Numerical Files
Birth Date | August 15, 852 AD Astronomical Sign | Leo / Year of the Monkey. Age | OLD. I can't math so good anymore. But I look like I'm, what, twenty-one? Twenty-two, maybe?
.. _______________________ Physical Attributes
Blood Type | AB Height| 5'11" Weight | 157 lbs Ethnicity | Japanese-born; died in the World of the Living and was sent to the 42nd District of East Rukon, where I lived for most of my life. So I guess that makes me... Rukongainese? /shrug Eye Color | Amber yellow. Physical Description| [ooc - writing description paragraphs in-character sucks, okay?] Longish, messy, burnt-crimson hair, sometimes tied up in a little ponytail, but often left down. It's often hanging in his face. Usually wears a mischievous, wolfish grin. Leanly-muscled, built on a slender frame. His expression, and the way he carries himself, gives off an almost overly-confident air. He doesn't appear to take much seriously; he's almost always laughing. He has an ugly burn mark on his left shoulder that he keeps covered - evidence of a pyrotechnics experiment gone awry when he was younger and still living in the Rukongai.
Wardrobe | [ x ] Call me old-fashioned, but most of the time if I've got nothing else to do, you'll find me wearing Heian-period clothes, like kariginu and stuff. s**t's comfy, I tell you. Oh, but t-shirts are nice too! They sure show off my features better than kariginu do...
...What's that? A unif-- OH SH-- YEAH. Of course I wear my shihakusho! Haha... haa... (_ _)"
Quirks When I was born, my first name, Enryo, was written 遠慮 - meaning "reserved". It obviously doesn't fit me, so I said, screw that, and started writing it 炎遼 - meaning "distant fire". Totally better, right? If you want to get really technical, my real name is Sugawara no Enryo. Kind of like my brother, Michizane. But most of you know him as Tenjin now, huh? People say I ramble. They also say I'm 'unstable'. I'm not quite sure what they mean by either. My attention span isn't the greatest. I mean, I'm not gonna run off mid-sentence and chase a cat or nothin', but I get bored quickly, y'know? I come off as loud and obnoxious, but get me alone and I'm completely different! I promise. When I put my mind to it, I'm actually a damned good strategist! I think that's... probably the only reason they keep me around here, now that I mention it... (_ _)" I try to keep it under wraps, but I'm kind of a germophobe. Everything has to be clean, all the time. All. The. Time. Another reason why they keep me around - I clean up after their slobby hides. People tend to think I'm stupid because I'm a bit of an airhead. It'll be the last mistake they make. I'm a shameless flirt, but I've...never actually... gotten anywhere... ...shut up.
Favors | Fireworks. Bonfires. Fire. Sleeping in late. Nighttime. ...Um, fire? I mentioned that, right? Cooking. A hot bath. Hanami - flower-viewing festivals. Mostly for the sake. Obon Festival - it's my birthday, after all! Nicknaming everyone and everything around me. Plum trees. After I heard how much Michizane loved them, and heard the tale of the original tobiume that "followed" him from the capital after his exile, I just couldn't get enough of them. Reading, writing
Disdains | My Zanpakutō. Well, ******** you too, Shiranui. Early mornings. Boredom. Exhaustion. Wind. It's a pain in the a**.
Preference of Food | Dango. Anything with meat in it. Omochi. Noodles. Literally any kind. I will eat them. Miso soup. Those little star-shaped hard candies - what are they called again? Konpeito? Yeah, that's it. Meat buns!
Disliked Foods | Natto. Natto. NATTO. Tofu. Believe it or not, spicy food. Like wasabi. Wasabi deserves its own bullet, actually. ******** that stuff in particular. Durian. Natto.
Preference of Drink | Coffee. Damn good sake. None of the cheap stuff. I mean, I'll drink the cheap stuff if it's offered to me, but I'll jump all over the good stuff. Ocha.
.._______________________ Something Unknown Fears | Failure. Boredom. Getting fired from the Gotei 14. I've heard about the Maggot's Nest. No thank you. On that note... Imprisonment. A lonely death.
Hobbies | Writing poetry - of the traditional Japanese variety. Never would have figured that one, huh? Something I must have picked up from my brother, I guess. Well, sure, I'm not the best by any means, but I'm certainly not the worst either... Cooking. I'm an exceptional cook. Just ask... well, anyone in Thirteenth. Pyrotechnics. I have a knack for putting on a damn good fireworks display. If any of the squads are celebrating something, you can bet I'll get called in to put on a show.
Aspirations | I wanna be promoted to Lieutenant someday! I mean, I have my own team now as it is - why not? Oh, but don't tell Tanya-tan that. I feel like she... might snap me in half if she found out I was gunning for her job. Well, not necessarily her job, but... And then I wanna be promoted to Captain! ...Oh, but wait. I guess that would mean someone'd have to die, huh? That'd suck. Never mind, then. To figure out what my Zanpakutō actually does would be great too.

xxSHIRANUI ___________________________________________________________ .. dance, o wind; scatter the sorrow along with the fluttering ash as you flicker and vanish into the darkness xxxx風よ舞え哀しみは舞い散る灰に乗せてゆらゆらとキミは闇に消えた
Zanpakutō Name | Shiranui (maybe?) [ 不知火 ] English Translation | 'Unknown Fire' Zanpakutō Element | Fire? Maybe? See below.
Zanpakutō Spirit | Okay, let me level with you here for a second. I hate this guy. Like, really, truly, blood-boilingly hate this guy. He's taken it upon himself to make my life a living hell, all because the first thing I asked him when we met was "Are you a Fire-type Zanpakutō?". Is that really so heinous? Really? Is that worth the seven hundred or so years of bullshit that he's put me through since then? He's never given me a straight answer on ANYTHING. He jokingly tells me that he's a Fire-type, and likes to use "fire" attacks, but his fire is weak, man. Pale bluish-white, and sort of... room-temperature. Can't burn nothin' like that. I'm 99% sure 'Shiranui' isn't even his real name. He told me to call him 'Shiranui', which means 'unknown fire', but I'm convinced he's doing it to screw with me.
Seriously, ******** this guy. Ladies, don't be fooled by his pretty face. He's a vindictive, mean-spirited a*****e. At least, I think he is...
Zanpakutō Inner World | I'll be honest, I can't remember much about what the Land of the Living was like, back in the Heian period. What I do remember, reminds me exactly of Shiranui's inner world. Peaceful and tranquil. An old Shinto shrine, tucked away on some mountainside somewhere among the trees. It's almost always late afternoon, early evening. Cicadas in the distance. Late summer. I'd visit more often if I didn't have to deal with Shiranui while I was there, honestly. It's a beautiful place. One of the few places I feel like I could actually relax. Brings me back to days gone by...
_________________________.. Spirit Files Zanpakutō Blade Type | Katana Zanpakutō Accessories | Trail of shide attached to the butt end of the handle. Don't know what shide are? They're those zig-zaggy pieces of folded white paper you see on old shrines, attached to the big hemp ropes that hang over entrances and stuff. Or attached to sticks being swung at you by crazy old priests. Not that I'd know. Zanpakutō Sealed Appearance | Blade Color » Standard jewel steel; maybe a bit on the whitish side. Sheath Color » White. Hilt Color » Brown; the hilt is wrapped in shimenawa rope. Except, you know, not friggin' massive. Tsuba Shape » Fairly nondescript. Just looks like a regular old tsuba, but... if I look really closely, I think I can see... leaves carved into it? Or maybe they're flames. This sword looks old, so it's damn hard to tell. Length » Blade: 28". Hilt: long enough to hold it in both hands with room to spare.
_________________________.. Shikai Files
Zanpakutō Activation Statement | Utae, Shiranui[lit. "Sing for me, Unknown Fire"] [ 歌え、不知火 ] Zanpakutō Blade Changes | It really... doesn't change at all. Except for the fire. Shikai Abilities Toujin Shiranui'Bladed Unknown Fire' [ 葉身不知火 ] Shiranui's blade is cloaked in white fire. It looks intimidating, but... that's about it. Shiranui Hanabi'Unknown Fire Pyrotechnics' [ 不知火花火 ] Shiranui purges the flames from its blade and fires them at an opponent in a concentrated blast, which explodes on or near contact. It does no damage unto itself, but it can catch an opponent off-guard. And I guess if the concussive force knocks 'em over they could hit their head or something. Shiranugitsunebi'Unknown Foxfire' [ 不知狐火 ] Shiranui purges the flames from its blade and creates a cloud of small, white fireballs, kind of reminiscent of the actual phenomenon of shiranui spoken of in Kyushu legend. These fireballs float motionless for a few seconds, then all bombard a target all at once. Again, they don't do anything, but seeing yourself catch on fire all of a sudden is kind of unsettling, so I've got that going for me, which is nice. (_ _)"
Note: During the execution of Shiranugitsunebi and Shiranui Hanabi, and shortly thereafter, Shiranui's blade loses its sheath of flames and returns to looking like a normal blade. How long it takes for the flames to return primarily depends on Shiranui's mood, but it does take longer to return after using Shiranui Hanabi than Shiranugitsunebi, in general. While without its flames, Shiranugitsunebi and Shiranui Hanabi cannot be used. I can scream at it to bring back Toujin Shiranui faster - or maybe it just feels like it's coming back faster. Leave it to Shiranui to ******** with me like that.
Shikai Control Level | Terrible. Gods I hate this guy. What I can do with Shikai depends entirely on the whims of that jerkass. Shikai Duration | Indefinite, but intermittent. It goes off and on as I use its abilities. At least it's, uh, reiatsu-efficient, I guess.

Aha. Ahahaha. It's cute that you'd think that asshat Shiranui would let me use Bankai.
TL;DR: I hate him, he hates me, we're a dysfunctional family.

xxARCANE REAPER TALENTS _____________________________________________________.. the wavering shadow of the white lotus covers your lips, as you wish for a final miracle
Kido Background Knowledge | Given the fact that Shiranui is basically decorative in a fight, I've had to learn to be proficient in kido. As such, I can use a couple more spells than most people of my rank - but still not as much as my lieutenant. Most of them are simply for organizing assaults and communicating with other members of my team, but one of them is a fire spell and I had to learn it because fire.
I wasn't always that good at kido. Since I do have strong Reiryoku, I had a very difficult time learning how to properly control kido. Every now and again I'll still misfire a spell somehow, but by and large I've got it handled now. Kido Expertise | Well, if someone here was more useful as a Zanpakutō, I wouldn't have to be such a friggin' expert in kido. Just sayin'. _________________________.. Kido Known

Spell Name: Shitotsu Sansen (嘴突三閃, Beak-Piercing Triple Beam) Number: 30 Incantation:Unknown Description: Crackling yellow energy gathers in the user's hand, who draws in triangle mid-air. The number set seems to be a variation on longitude and latitude.
Spell Name: Tenteikūra (天挺空羅, Heavenly Rickshaws in Silken Air) Number: 77 Incantation:"Black and white net. Twenty-two bridges, sixty-six crowns and belts. Footprints, distant thunder, sharp peak, engulfing land, hidden in the night, sea of clouds, blue line. Form a circle and fly though the heavens." Kaidō Known |
Spell Name: Inemuri (威眠, Forced Slumber) Number: 01 Incantation: Unknown Description: This technique knocks the victim unconscious when the user places their palm in front of their face. For a moment, the victim's pupil's dilate several times before they fall unconscious.

Spell Name: Kai Kizu (解傷, Release Cut) Number: 05 Incantation: Unknown Description: This Kidō is used to heal cuts. Does absolutely nothing for internal. It's performed by simply passing over the cut with your palm, while concentrating an appropriate amount of spiritual energy in it. The used amount of reiryoku is rather low, but must be measured precisely, otherwise a scar would be left after the healing procedure.
Spell Name: Kogoeru (凍える, Chilling) Number: 07 Incantation: Unknown Description: This is mainly used for lowering body temperatures as this Kidō allows you to control the body temperature of the patient. The user puts his left hand on the patient's forehead and leaks out a small part of his own spiritual energy to flow through the patient.
Spell Name: Kakusei (覚醒, Awakening) Number: 12 Incantation: Unknown Description: The user of this technique touches their index and middle fingers to the victim's forehead. A blue light emanates from their fingers, reviving the unconscious victim.
Spell Name: Nuku Doku (抜く毒, Draw Out Poison) Number: 13 Incantation: Unknown Description: In this Kidō the caster puts their hand on the patients back and says the spell. Then the poison in the patient body gets transferred to the healer’s body and winds up storing itself into their mouth. So in small terms, the poison transfers from the patient to the healer’s mouth where they can just spit it out... or onto someone. Despite the low number, and the low amount of energy required, this can be a demanding technique since it requires the caster's full attention as to not poison himself.
Spell Name: Shibireyubi (しびれ指, Numbing Finger) Number: #15 Incantation: Unknown Description: The user places a finger in front of the victim's face and a ball of white energy flashes momentarily before their eyes. The victim is immediately incapacitated and falls to the ground whilst still conscious and aware of what is going on around them.
Spell Name: Nesshōi (熱傷医, Burn Healing) Number: 16 Incantation: Unknown Description: This Kidō creates a flow of reiatsu that first soothes the burn and then repairs them. As most of the healing Kidō, it is cast by hovering the user's palms over the wound.
Spell Name: Shōsen (掌仙, Mystical Palm) Number: 25 Incantation: Unknown Description: The user of this technique holds their hands over the victim's wounds, which begin to glow green with spiritual energy to facilitate healing. The mechanics of this healing technique involves the replenishment of the patient's Reiatsu first, then using the body's Reiatsu with the healer's Reiatsu in order to heal the patient's body.
Spell Name: Josaidōki (除細動器, Defibrillator) Number: 37 Incantation: Unknown Description: After covering the caster's hands in pale yellow Reiryoku, an electrical current passes over them and by pressing their hands to the patient's torso, they are able to deliver a biphasic shock in order to jump-start their heart. This Kaidō is used to revive those who have been "dead" for under five minutes.
Forbidden Spells Known | I'm good at Kido, but I'm not THAT good.
Unclassified Kido Known | Spell Name: Sentan Hakuja (千反白蛇, Thousand-Coil White Snake) Type: Unclassified Incantation: None Description: This technique utilizes the use of the long, white piece of cloth that is spun around to incorporate targets within it's coils. The cloth tightens before, with a white flash, teleports the targets to another location.
Kido Abilities |
Ability Name: Nijū Eishō (二重詠唱, Twofold Incantation) Type: Unclassified Description: A class of Kidō Incantation where the Kidō practitioner mixes the incantations of two entirely separate Kidō spells together to save time and confuse ones' opponent at the same time. Mastery: This is a technique I've gotten pretty good at.
Ability Name: Eishōhaki (詠唱破棄, Incantation Abandonment) Type: Unclassified Description: A skill that allows the caster to use a Kido without a spirit chant. While it decreases the time needed to release the Kidō, it drastically weakens the spell, cutting it down to a third. The 5th Division Lieutenant can supplement their skill to retain the power of Kidō below 50. The 5th Division captain can do the same with Kidō below 70. Mastery: I can do it, but I'm not so great at it. I can drop the incantation on skills below level 30-ish. Everything else requires the full incantation.
_________________________.. Shinigami Abilities
Zanjutsu | I'm very handy with a sword. I'd say I'm better than most at basic swordplay tactics, because it's basically the only weapon I've got in a fight. I've had to be better than most to get to my position, since my sword itself is of little help to me. I'm sorry, am I starting to sound bitter? Good.
I digress. I've studied kendo at length, and while I'm by no means a master, I can certainly pose a threat in a simple sword fight.
Hakuda | Not really my thing, although I've been told I have a mean right hook. I could hold my own in a fistfight against someone who isn't trained in hand-to-hand combat, but I'd be quickly outclassed by someone even slightly more skilled than I.
Hohō | Not the best, but pretty good. I can keep up with or outpace most enemies and fellow Shinigami, save for the Onmitsukidō. Which is good, since I often need to haul a** and get out of a fight. You know, without having a Zanpakutō to rely on and all. Airwalking and Shunpō are no trouble, but I certainly won't be doing Senka or the like any time soon.
In combat, I thrive in a forested environment. I'm hard to pin down, and I know how to use the trees to my advantage. Back in the Rukon District, my little village was in the center of a dense forest... but you can read more about that in my biography, yeah?
Durability | Durable enough to get by, I suppose. I wouldn't call myself a glass cannon, per se, but I'm no tank either. I can take a good deal of punishment before I tag out, though. Again, no thanks to Shiranui.
Reiryoku | My spiritual pressure? It's hard to pin down, since most Shinigami release it through their goddamn Zanpakutō. Shiranui really screwed me over. I had my Reiryoku analyzed by Squad Twelve once upon a time, and they say I've got stronger than average. Too bad I can only vent it through Kido. If I had to guess, I'd say my Reiryoku is equal to or a bit less than that of a lieutenant. So just right for someone of my position, but above average overall. It's a whitish-blue.

xxLOST IN TRANSLATION ____________________________________________________________ .. A journey of a thousand years begins with a single moment.
Chapter One | In Brother's Shadow Time Frame | Circa 852-862 AD The days that you said were too long felt like a dream that lasted but a single night. [ x ]
Ugh, finally done with all that dry, boring crap, huh? Hopefully you're as sick of it as I am. Now we get to formally be introduced! The name's Enryo. Sugawara Enryo. Please take care of me. /bow
Hnn, so where to start...? Well, I guess I should start at the beginning - or what I can recall of it, anyway. The time I spent in the Land of the Living was so long ago now, it's all kind of vague. I was born to Sugawara no Koreyoshi in August of 852 AD, in Heian-kyo - what you today would call Kyoto. I was always a kind of sickly child, so I spent most of my time inside, learning the arts of reading and writing from my father and brother.
Ah, my brother. I was one of a number of siblings, but I was always closest with Michizane. He was absolutely brilliant. Well-spoken, highly educated, attractive, an excellent poet... he was everything I wanted to be, and everything I could never be. I loved him to death, but I resented him for having what I never would. I was just too frail, but Michizane never failed to try and help me live every day to the fullest.
I tried to get better, for his sake, and for mine. I really did. There were so many things I still wanted him to teach me, and I was tired of feeling sorry for myself, and for resenting Michizane. And for a while, it worked. I bounced back. Started being able to go outside and play with kids my age. Michizane, though - seven years my senior, he was busy studying for his entrance examinations for Daigaku, and I didn't see much of him. It didn't bother me, though. I was able to be normal for a change.
Winter of 861 was particularly harsh. It hit everyone hard, but people who were already weak, especially so. My health took a nosedive, and by the beginning of 862, a few months shy of my tenth birthday, I was bedridden. It was obvious that I wouldn't recover this time. Michizane came back from Daigaku to stay by my side, to tell me stories of the outside world, and of all the things he'd learned.
Michizane had always tried to tell me that the fact that I was frail didn't matter. Life was longer than people let on - sometimes too long. I would have plenty of time to learn all that there was. It wasn't until late February that I realized how right he was. I passed away quietly in my sleep one night, and I watched Michizane discover my body the following morning; watched the grief that wracked his body as he held me.
How could I have known that that was just the beginning?
Chapter Two | Tsukirei Time Frame | 862 AD The chains that bind us the most closely are the ones we have broken.
I couldn't leave. Didn't want to leave. Michizane was slowly recovering, moving on. Never once did he forget me. He prayed for me. Every night, he prayed for me. I think he knew I was there, watching over him.
The black-robed figures drifted in and out of view every once in a while. Followed me around. Watched my actions. Kept their distance. They frightened me. It didn't matter. I had to stay with my brother. He still missed me. Still needed me.
Or did I need him? He kept me here on Earth, and through him, I continued to learn. It was what I craved.
Months passed, and I continued to follow Michizane. He wasn't doing well. He'd been sick a lot lately. All the more reason for me to keep an eye on him, right? I'd be his guardian spirit.
It was then that they approached me for the first time. Two of those black-robed people. They called themselves "Shinigami". Death Gods. 'Cause that's really going to comfort a confused ten-year-old, right? Yeah.
They told me the cause behind my brother's illness was none other... than me. I didn't understand. All I wanted was to protect him! How could I be the one causing him to be sick? I was outraged that these... these strangers, these Shinigami, would try and blame me for my brother's misfortune.
They told me that I had become something called a tsukirei - a possessive spirit. It was a dangerous level that the soul of a departed human could sink to, should they remain too attached to one living person after death. The chain that had once bound my soul to my body had wrapped itself around Michizane, and it was strangling him. If I didn't leave with them soon, I would end up becoming something... truly evil, and the first person I would target would be him. These evil spirits - Hollows, they called them - had been following me around for a while. To sate their hunger, a few of them had come after me, but these Shinigami had been my silent protectors. They begged me to come with them, before it was too late, and my brother couldn't be saved.
I didn't want to go. I wanted to watch Michizane grow and become powerful. I knew in my own way that he had a bright future ahead of him, and I wanted to be a part of that, because I didn't have that kind of future ahead of me.
But it wasn't fair of me to jeopardize that future on account of my own selfishness. Despite my youth, I understood that much. The Shinigami told me that they could send me to a better place, where there were no Hollows, no sorrow; no hunger, no thirst, and no loneliness, and that it would be painless and peaceful. I closed my eyes and submitted to their Konsō ritual, and when next I opened them, the world spread out before me was unlike anything I'd ever seen before.
Chapter Three | End of the Beginning Time Frame | 862 - 1287 AD Even the moon stained red is waiting eagerly for the time of beginning known as the end.
Here, things start getting a little clearer. In fact, I can remember most every detail of everything that's happened to me since I came to the Soul Society. When I woke up, I found myself in what I would later learn was East Rukon's Forty-Second District. A kindly older couple took me in; they brew sake out in the forest there and sell it to the Seireitei. Lookin' back on it now, it's pretty high-end stuff that they make. Actually, I could go for some right about now...
I wasn't the only one they'd 'adopted' over the years, nor was it an uncommon practice, by the looks of it. No one actually ran into their deceased loved ones in the Soul Society. It was too big. Everyone just formed makeshift families to get by, and I was no exception. My family had seven other children in it when I first arrived - as I grew, some left and others came. The cycle of rebirth normally takes about sixty years, so that's about how long I'd have with my siblings before they'd reincarnate.
What I could never understand was why I never reincarnated. Or why I alone had to eat, while no one else in my family did. I was always hungry. I took to quietly hunting in the forest to keep myself sated. I didn't want the kindly old couple who'd taken me in to worry about me. I never thought that they'd be the ones to explain it all to me.
I had the power. Reiryoku. The innate talent to become a Shinigami, those black-cloaked people who had saved my brother from me. They had it too - that's how they'd managed to stay in the Rukongai for so damn long - but had never pursued that avenue. They were farmers, not fighters. They'd rather live indefinitely in the Rukon District and carry on their simple way of life than go to school to learn how to use a sword. There was no need for it here.
At the time, I agreed with them. Fighting wasn't for me. But from that day on, when I went out hunting, I'd be sure to bring back enough for them, too.
And yet... it's amazing how boring things get after a few hundred stagnant years. I'd wake up, go hunt something down in the forest so I wouldn't be tempted to gnaw off my own arm in hunger, then go help my 'grandparents' tend the fields. After the sun went down I'd help round up some of my youngest siblings, and then I'd go to bed. Rinse and repeat ad nauseam for four hundred years, and you can see how I'd be getting fed up. I started fooling around with pyrotechnics just to escape the tedium of the day-to-day life in the Forty-Second.
It was only once I'd discovered that that I'd realized I'd found something that truly brought joy to my life. Watching something I'd created shoot up into the night sky and explode in a burst of colour and light... there's nothin' quite like it, and I've been chasing that high ever since.
I started fashioning my own fireworks cannons out of old trees I cut down one summer. Most didn't do so great. One blew up in my face; I badly burned my shoulder, where the cannon had been resting. I was out of commission for about a week - apparently, if you've been gifted with abundant Reiryoku, you heal faster. A lot faster. My siblings - the ones without the power - all thought I'd lose the arm. I still have a nasty scar, but other than that, the arm healed just fine. Within a week.
After that mishap, I started being a bit more careful with how I crafted my cannons. It took a while to develop one that worked perfectly - I still carry it with me and use it to this day. Actually, I carry it with me probably more often than I carry my Zanpakutō - not that that means much. Stupid ******** Shiranui.
I digress. I'll talk about him... uh, later.
By creating and developing fireworks and the cannons that shoot 'em, I ended up acquiring a talent for metallurgy in the process. After all, a cannon won't last long if it's just made of wood. I didn't think much of it at the time, but my ability to forge little bits and pieces of metal that I needed for my designs would come in handy down the road.
It was in 1287 that I finally took action to end my insatiable boredom. Leaving home with two of my adopted siblings who also displayed Reiryoku - a girl around my age, named Yuzuki, and a boy, significantly younger, named Yuè - I made for the Seireitei, with the intention of attempting to become Shinigami.
Chapter Four | Tenjin-san no Komoriuta Time Frame | 1287 - 1294 AD 天神さんお眠。地の神さんお眠。お眠の里の大蛇もねんね。 [ x ]
s**t, you're still here? Why are you asking so many questions about me, anyway? Am I really that interesting? Or could it be... you're enamoured with me? Ha! I knew it! I...
...Wait, you're not?
s**t.
Well, this is awkward. Haa... moving on, I guess.
Hnnn. Where was I? Oh yeah. Seireitei.
The first thing that struck me about the Seireitei was how friggin' huge it was. Seriously, there were probably more people in the average building there than there were in my entire district back home. It was totally overwhelming at first, but once I got used to it, I began to feel more and more like this was the place for me. So many things to do, and all the time in the world to do them. It was like a dream come true for me.
I won't lie, getting back to studying after so long was really difficult. Like, really difficult. But also really rewarding at the same time. It was nice to not be doing the same mindless farm work day in and day out. Some of the other Shinigami hopefuls would pray to some new god named Tenjin, who they called the god of scholarship, learning, and, um, natural ******** disasters, when they were preparing for skill tests and what have you. I'd never heard of this 'Tenjin' while I was alive, nor while I was back in the Rukon District, so I decided to do some more investigating. And in the process, I finally tied up the last loose end that had been bugging me since my time in the land of the living had ended.
'Tenjin' was once a human. A human by the name of Sugawara no Michizane - my bookish elder brother. After I'd left him, he'd gone on to become a successful politician in Heian-kyo - until he was betrayed by his contemporaries and exiled from the capital. He died in Kyushu, reportedly of a broken heart. Not long after, vicious storms began lashing Heian-kyo, killing many of the people who had betrayed him in life, and burning down the houses of their relatives. The emperor feared that Michizane-aniki had laid some sort of curse upon the capital after his death, so he decided to have him deified to try and right the wrongs of the past. That's right - they prayed so hard for the disasters to stop that they turned my brother's soul into a ******** kami.
...I've never been so proud in my entire life. Good job, aniki-sama!
Uh, that stays between us, by the way. The fact that my brother is a legitimate kami, I mean. I really don't want people coming to me and trying to get me to vie for his favour for them. Hell, I haven't been able to speak to him since I died. I doubt he'd even remember me nowadays anyway. Maybe some day I'll be able to meet him face to face and catch up with him, but I don't even know if something like that is possible.
Anyway. I studied my a** off in the Seireitei's libraries and loved every minute of it. Yuzuki and I were good, but Yuè... he reminds me of Michizane, actually. If Michizane was a lot more weak-willed and cried a lot more, that is. He just naturally picks stuff up. The three of us quickly formed a team - Yuzuki excelled at Kido, Yuè at tactics, and myself, a natural with a sword. Honestly, it was just nice to have someone who I knew had my back.
Because, as I found out, people in the Seireitei are generally assholes to people from the Rukon District. They've got this whole elitist bullshit mentality in the Seireitei that makes them think that just because they were born there, it instantly makes them superior to people from beyond the wall. Having someone to cover my back and who understood the same kind of torment that I was subjected to daily was a great comfort.
The three of us held together and before long, we'd been accepted as recruits to the Gotei Thirteen. I started investigating the different Divisions in earnest, trying to figure out which Squad I would want to be in. Twelve appealed to me; they're the Research and Development Division, after all. But they were too... serious about their work. Too stuffy. I ended up getting a friend of mine, who'd graduated a few years before me, to show me around the barracks of most of the squads.
I decided on Thirteen as soon as I saw it. Thirteenth is the Armory and Engineering Division. I realized that if I went there, I'd be free to "engineer" new fireworks for the enjoyment of everybody in the Seireitei and the Rukon District, and yet still perform the general duties of a Shinigami. They're a bit more carefree over in Thirteen anyway. Plus, with my knack for metallurgy and love of fire and explosions, in a Division that's all about forging new weapons? Yeah, come on. Where else would I go, honestly?
Yuzuki and Yuè decided to follow me there. I appealed with the Captain of Thirteenth to allow the three of us in, and we were accepted as unseated members. Which made sense, since all three of us were fresh out of training and had nothing but basic skills and Asauchi to our names. Regardless, we'd made it. We'd made something of ourselves, and we couldn't be happier. We moved in shortly thereafter, and began our roles as Shinigami.
Chapter Five | Unknown Fire Time Frame | 1287 - 1603 AD The flowers quietly scorched your body, painting an image of hell. [ x ]
And here's where I'm going to have to start talking about that douchebag Shiranui. I apologize in advance.
Yuè, Yuzuki and I lived in the Thirteenth Division for quite some time, and things were, all things considered, quite peaceful.
Until around 1340 AD, anyway. That was when Japan's Muromachi era began. For those of you who are less-familiar with Japanese history, the Warring States Period was incredibly violent, bloody and vicious. Many people died in the conflicts, which gave us Shinigami a hell of a lot of work to do to keep things in check. Where there were violent deaths, there were bound to be Hollows to prey upon the confused souls left behind. They needed to field as many Shinigami as possible to try and outweigh the overwhelming number of Hollows roaming the Land of the Living. Even unranked officers like myself were sent out to try and ferry as many Pluses as possible to the Soul Society before the Hollows could get at them. It wasn't uncommon that I would spend days, weeks, or even months in the Land of the Living. I didn't mind it - it was interesting to see what had happened to the world I'd left behind almost five hundred years ago, and it was great to be able to help people as those two Shinigami who had saved me had. And whenever I'd save a kid's soul, I'd be sure to send them to East Forty-Second. I knew a certain family there would help them out if they heard I'd sent the kid.
It was on one of these long-term excursions that I first awakened Shiranui. I'd spent years at this point fantasizing about what type of Zanpakutō I had. I had a nagging feeling that it was Fire-type; maybe something with explosive effects, like fireworks. It made perfect sense to me - a Zanpakutō is a manifestation of the wielder's soul, right? Well, what else could it possibly be, then?
So anyway, the first time I met Shiranui was in the middle of a pretty intense fight. Well, not intense by most Shinigami standards, but for a guy with nothing but an Asauchi and a bunch of unreliable Kido at his disposal, it was intense. I was engaged against a Hollow who'd come out of... well, wherever Hollows come from, to prey upon a small village, most of which had been recently levelled by a bandit raid. Maybe ten or fifteen dead. Way too appetizing to pass up for a Hollow, I guess. He'd already consumed a couple people by the time I got there, so he was stronger than average, and I was caught off-guard. He knocked me out and left me in the centre of the village while he went to feast on the souls that couldn't fight back.
It was in that unconscious state that I first visited Shiranui's inner world. It immediately called back memories I'd long thought gone - memories of old Heian-kyo, of the shrines in the mountains, and the stifling peace that lingers there like a haze. Shiranui himself was sitting on a stone at the side of the path leading to the shrine, sipping some green tea quietly. He didn't seem to even notice I was there.
And here's where things went awry. You've seen what he looks like, right? He's very pretty. Pretty enough that I... may or may not have mistaken him for a girl. And called him out on it. He didn't take too kindly to that. I think I said something stupid like "at least my Zanpakutō's a hot girl" or something.
The look I got. I will never forget it. If looks could kill, I'd be dead right now. Or, rather, I'd be dead again. The whole concept of death as a Shinigami has kinda been lost on me for a while now. Not sure I get it. Not sure I ever will, really. Anyway, proceeding to dig myself deeper into the hole I've been trying to crawl out of for seven hundred years since all this s**t happened, I then asked him if he was a Fire-type Zanpakutō. He seemed to take even less kindly to that than my last statement. He bitterly reassured me that he was indeed a Fire-type Zanpakutō, and that to use his power, I would have to ask him to sing. He told me I could call him Shiranui.
Shiranui. It's from an old Kyushu legend that tells tales of bizarre fireballs that appear a few times a year out over the surface of the ocean. They start out few in number and quite dim, but then multiply as the event goes on. No one's been able to explain them, although many have tried. In fact, one of the old names for Kyushu is "Hi no Kuni", meaning "country of fire" - named after this phenomenon. Shiranui itself means "unknown fire".
So I had what I wanted. A Fire-type Zanpakutō. Things couldn't have turned out better, despite getting off to a... rocky start with Shiranui. When I regained consciousness, I found that my Asauchi had changed forms, and was now my own, unique Zanpakutō - a long katana with a pale bluish-white sheath, handle made of shimenawa rope, and a trail of neatly-folded shide hanging loosely off the end. It certainly looked cool, but I wanted to see what abilities it had. I drew it from its sheath and flew at the Hollow, who had essentially abandoned me in favour of more savoury prey.
I asked Shiranui to sing for me. This time, I had the upper hand.
Or so I thought, anyway. To my dismay, Shiranui turned out to be the most underwhelming Fire-type Zanpakutō ever.
In retrospect, maybe I shouldn't have pissed him off so badly the first time we met.
Shiranui's fire attacks... didn't seem to do a hell of a lot. They were bright and flashy, but not... all that useful, I'm sad to say. I'd later discover that it was because Shiranui's fire is room-temperature - it can't burn anything. I ended up having to handle the rest of the fight mostly with Kido and my already-decent swordsmanship skills. I returned to the Soul Society, downtrodden and exhausted, to have a chat with my captain about what the hell all of this meant.
Captain Saikyou, as a master of swords and head of the Armoury and Engineering Division, tried to explain to me that the bond between a Shinigami and their Zanpakutō is something that needs to be cultivated over a long period of time. I was assured that in time, Shiranui would come to reveal his true power to me. I just had to work at it.
Well, here I am seven hundred years later, and I can safely say that... that hasn't happened yet. I'm still back where I was in that village, desperately grasping at straws in my fights and taking absolutely any opportunity I can to get ahead in battle. Some people say I fight dirty. I say I'm simply a combat pragmatist.
I continued going back and forth from the Land of the Living to the Soul Society throughout the Muromachi era, ferrying souls out of the chaos that they'd left behind. More and more, Shiranui stayed sheathed. Hell, I even brought my fireworks cannon a number of times and used that instead.
By the time the warring finally came to an end and the Edo period began, I'd long since lost track of how many people I'd saved from the fate that I myself had almost suffered. I understand better than most how bloody that time period really was, and I found myself doubting whether or not I'd ever be successful as a Shinigami without a proper sword.
Chapter Six | Blitzkrieg Time Frame | 1603 AD - Present The riot inside keeps trying to visit me. [ x ]
My voice hurts from talking so much. Are we almost done?
...Ugh, ********. Fine.
Following the end of the Muromachi period, the world settled into something a little more stable. It wasn't necessary for as many Shinigami to be running around the Land of the Living as there used to be. So I was relegated back to the Soul Society to continue my frustrated attempts to figure out what the hell Shiranui actually does. This process was made infinitely more difficult by the fact that he hated me now, and wasn't willing to volunteer much, if any, information. He's taken it upon himself to make my life miserable since the day we met. Some of my contemporaries poke fun at me for being on such bad terms with my Zanpakutō, but honestly, I've stopped caring. They can say what they want - at least I'm happy, more or less.
Then something very interesting happened. In 1767, my Squad's third seat, who was an aging old inventor, finally decided to retire. He just wasn't spry enough to keep up with the younger members of the squad. To my surprise, Saikyou-taicho approached me and informed me that I would be promoted to third seat. When I asked her why, she told me that despite not being so great at controlling my Zanpakutō's abilities, I'd gotten damn good at basic swordmanship and Kido, and I was something of an inspiration to my subordinates. It was for that reason that they'd decided to seat me. Besides, I had had access to my Shikai for a few hundred years at this point. Control issues aside, there wasn't much reason not to give me the seat. At least my Zanpakutō wasn't dangerous when out of control.
I had no idea what being third seat would entail until I was informed that I would be the head of field testing on new weapons. Very cool. I was also told that I would be chief of something called "Blitzkrieg ********. Yes.
I'm responsible for mastering combat in rough terrain - something which, living back in the Rukon District, I'd already picked up on while hunting to stay alive. I'm also leading my own team - the Blitzkrieg Squad - who follow my orders and are trying to learn by example.
Yuzuki and Yuè were both placed on the Blitzkrieg Squad under me. They're still unseated officers, and neither of them have gotten anything out of their Zanpakutō. It's a lot of pressure, knowing that I'm directly responsible for whether they live or die in combat, especially since they're my 'siblings', so to speak. They were apparently placed there because they already had a grasp of my combat techniques and who I was as a person, having been with me for so damn long.
And that brings us to today. I still have no idea what Shiranui's game is, and I'm blindly stumbling through my position as third seat, but all things considered, I can't complain. I have no idea what the future holds, but I'll meet it head-on, all guns blazing.

Everything looks good! But, after some careful reading, the only thing that needs changed is the bio.
The academy does not exist in the guild, and the 13th Captain (me) is a woman, haha. I request you change that information.
Lastly, this line:
"The 5th Division Lieutenant can supplement their skill to retain the power of Kidō below 50. The 5th Division captain can do the same with Kidō below 70."
needs changing. The wording isn't quite necessary?

Copy and pasted that directly off of the Kido reference thread. I didn't feel quite right about changing it. But yeah, gimme a second. xD
As for the gender ambiguity of the Captain of 13th, I looked to your character's bio for a timeline reference (for continuity's sake, because I wasn't sure when your character became captain of 13th - it'd be weird to reference you as the captain before you actually BECAME captain) so I left it deliberately ambiguous until you filled out that section of your bio. ;D
