Has anyone else been witness to a hysteria that GW is going under? It seems to be spreading at my local game shop and on a couple of web communities I belong to.

If GW does go under, it wouldn't surprise me, and I'm sure other companies will compete to purchase their intellectual property.
It's not like another company could do much worse (and if so, then that company will likely have the same, or worse results).
