And at last I see the light
And it's like the fog has lifted
And at last I see the light
And it's like the sky is new
And it's warm and real and bright
And the world has somehow shifted
All at once everything looks different
Now that I see you

Aella had kissed Chanterelle so long ago, it seemed. But she could remember exactly how it felt. Whenever she thought about it, something pooled in her stomach and pulsed with life. It was both warm and unsettling.

Day after day, Aella had waited for an answer from Chanterelle, or some sign. She had expected her to pull away, gradually receding until she was left alone forever. But that hadn't happened. She had scarce dared hope that Chanterelle would love her back, she would kiss her back. She would love her and more and more and more...

Yet, nothing had happened. Nothing at all. Things went on just they way they had been before. It had been as though the kiss had never happened. That was fine too...she'd rather it be this way then to lose her forever. But things had to change, she knew that--she knew they wouldn't' keep going on as they were.

She was terrified each morning that this might be the day that she would leave her, and excited that she might kiss her again. Every day could be the day, the first day of the rest of her life.

This was the kind of love that could make the world go around or burn it to the down. And every morning, when she woke up, Aella could see it happening both ways.

But she wouldn't push her, she wouldn't ask. It was a decision that Chanterelle had to come to on her own, no matter how long it took.

"Chanterelle," her voice was barely a whisper. "I need to say something,"

The words rattled around inside of her head, over and over again.

At first, she hadn't thought that she heard the rest of what the pale mare had said, but in time her mind recovered what was spoken and began replaying that in her head as well.

"I didn't think this would happen. That it would ever happen. But Chanterelle...I love you. I love you like the moon loves the stars, like the flower loves the sun. Everything in me that had withered has come alive because of you. And maybe you don't feel it, or maybe you don't know. I know I didn't. I fought this, I did. And I'll wait forever for you, if you ask me to. But it all comes back to you. You pull me to you like gravity, and I love, I love, I love you."

Chanterelle had spent afternoons, evenings, sometimes even entire nights going over that day. Going over how wonderful and terrifying it had been all at once. Going over all the emotions that filled and overwhelmed her, reducing her to a mess of tears for her lack of a better reaction.

Aella had confessed her love to her, and what had she done? Stared back at her confused and lost, and ultimately broke down.

Day after day, Chanterelle slowly began to sort the mess of questions in her mind. It was slow going, and every day she awoke with her heart wrenching at the thought of opening her eyes to find Aella gone. Aella had become such a huge part of Chanterelle, that she hardly knew what to do with herself when they were apart, and that in and of itself helped sort some of the questions out.

Aella, a mare who had lost her entire world with her mate, had professed her love to her. Such beautiful words, caught in a moment of peace in the ever-providing swamp. There were many parts of this confession that Chanterelle wasn't sure she understood, but there was something she did.

That kiss.

That moonlit moment that would forever be frozen in time between the two mares sharing their first kiss.

That, she understood.
That, she came to realize, was the first step in understanding her own feelings.

But understanding her feelings and being able to put them to words were two very different things, and though Chanterelle did not grow distant with Aella she struggled with bringing them up to her. How the desert mare had found such beautiful words, or any words at all, to express herself was beyond the young kirin, but she was determined to find a way.

Determined to find the right way of expressing her feelings to Aella, Chanterelle was waiting for the words to come to her, for she knew that when the time was right, her heart would speak for her.

Aella watched as the sun began to sink in the sky, and waited for her favourite aspect of living in the swamp. Each day as the sun began it's descent along the horizon, small lights began to blossom across the swamp. Tiny flluttering fireflys began to glow, the dim buzz they made overpowered by the music of the cicadas.

It was as though the night was coming alive, stretching it's wings and putting on a show. Every night it was different and yet the same. Aella would never get tired of it, of it's beauty and it's power over her. It was nights like this that she wanted to rub her face against Chanterelle, wanted to kiss her again and never stop.

It was as though the world was filled with magic at this time, as though they were being taken to a different world. Her eyes drifted to Chanterelle as the glowing began to start, blushing she turned away--consumed with the beauty of the night.

I love you. I love you. I love...you

The last several days the kirin had felt a burning desire to say something, the strongest she'd ever felt this urge, but not knowing how. At midday, however, Chanterelle had remembered something that her father, Recovery, had once mentioned and it had set her off on a mission. She had told Aella there was a small errand to run and that she'd be back before nightfall, and she had kept her word returning well before sunset. She had tried to act normal to hide her excitement from her friend because she was waiting for the right moment to act. And now as the sun descended behind the horizon it was almost time.

Chanterelle watched the nightbugs come out into the darkening sky, but she had secretly been stealing glances at Aella since she had come back from her errand. One of these secret glances caught Aella just turning away with a rosy tinge to her cheeks. This was her chance. As the blushing maiden turned her face away, the light-footed kirin approached her nigh-silently and stopped just out of reach.

"Aella..." she whispered gently, coaxing the mare out from behind her scarlet curtain of hair. Waiting for Aella to look at her, she continued softly, "... I want to show you something. Do you trust me?" Borrowed words from when she had been guided to Chronos' grave, but these words were not laiden with sorry. These words were soft, almost kissing her ears and urging her to oblige.

"Aella..."

The way Chanterelle said her name made her quiver in excitement, made her heart beat so loudly that it was all she could hear, along with the echo of her name.

"Aella..."

"Aella..."

She looked at Chanterelle from behind the veil of her hair, her whole heart on her face as she looked at the one she loved. The fireflies gleamed, the sun sank lower but all she could see was Chanterelle.

Oh, Chanterelle.

"I trust you," the words rushed out--eager and scared. "I trust you with everything."

Chanterelle smiled warmly as the other mare metaphorically held her heart out for her to see and take. She was finally understanding the signs and emotions. She was finally understanding the language of love, and very soon she'd be taking her first attempts at speaking it.

As she led the way, some of her excitement escaped her guise in the manner of her gait. Chanterelle didn't really realize it, but she was prancing slightly as kirin tend to do on their tender toes. Here in the swamp where most of the ground was soft, she had covered her tracks well earlier in the day, but as they approached their destination not only hoof but many little paw marks could be seen all over the ground here.

"Just about there, now!" she threw over her shoulder to make sure Aella was still following her. It was almost time to speak the way she knew how. Almost.

A few moments later the mare led her companion up a path that inclined toward a very dark grove. The trees here were more similar to those of a dark forest, but patches like these could be found here and there throughout the swamp. Chanterelle held back a moment so that she could nudge Aella's shoulder with her nose to urge her into the grove. The tall trees made the falling darkness here deeper but the occasional nightbug offered enough light to move around easily. Perhaps the only strange thing about the area, apart from why Chanterelle was taking them into a dark clearing, was a sudden flutter of wings when a stray songbird flew a circle around the two mares and then disappeared into the branches above.

Aella's heart beat so painfully loud in her chest that she thought that Chanterelle must hear it. Chanterelle was practically dancing before her leading her down a dark path through the swamp trees. The flickering glow danced across their skins, it seemed romantic--beautiful.

No, no. Don't think that way. What if this is just a friendship? What if this is her letting you down? No, no...She could lead her down to hell and she'd go.

Chanterelle was looking at her in that way, did she even dare to hope?

"Yes, yesss..." her s's drew out as they sometimes did when she got excited-- a small tell of her mutated heritage that sometimes snuck out. Nodding, Chanterelle continued nudging Aella gently as she guided her to what was apparently a very specific placement.

Stepping back and taking a quick assessment of the situation, Chanterelle nodded firmly, "There! Ok, this is perfect. Yesss... yes, yes."

Quickly she turned on the spot, looking up at the branches all around, as if she was checking something.... was there something up in those dark branches? It was hard to tell for sure... but were there maybe a few pairs of eyes looking down at the mares? Perhaps it was purely imagination, but just as quickly as she had turned on the spot, Chanterelle was back to facing Aella.

She took a deep breathe, to calm herself and her excitement, and when she spoke again a moment later she spoke slowly, but confidently. Everything was perfect. "Aella? I'm really glad you came with me tonight. Are you ready to see what I've brought you here for?" As the carefully planned words came out, her eyes spoke of her excitement and eagerness. Just a few moments more...

Aella felt confusion, her heart was leaping still. "Yes, I'm ready." She could see the other mare's dancing eyes. This is it. This is when my life will begin, this is it. Chanterelle...she, oh God. She loved her back?

Aella said yes, and that was all the cue that was necessary.

Chanterelle smiled and spoke a few warm words,

"This moment is for you, Aella."

The abated silence of the swamp was gently filled with the rushing of small wings as songbirds flew in from all around, but was soon replaced by the gradual soft tunes of these very creatures. Every color imaginable was sheening off their feathers in the dim light, but each and every songbird had equipped itself with a long string of phosphorescent moss which they held as the humans hold ribbons during their ceremonies. As the avians sang, they began weaving in and out and in again, patterns that seemed impossibly intricate and yet no moss-ribbons ever tangled. Their flight lasted not more than a handful of seconds before the sky above the two mares began to open up.

The trees groaned and creaked as those top branches were slowly released to where they naturally rested, and as they did so the first light of the moon flooded into the clearing making a perfect circle around the two mares.
Should one have been looking into the branches now that there was more light to see by, one might spy many ropes and vines tied in various places that now hung slack in the branches but must have been what had kept them in place earlier. A brilliant set of knots and pulleys had helped pull this moonlight curtain together.

Not a second had gone by since the full clearing had been flooded with moonlight than there was a soft skittering of many paws at the foot of the trees and the songbirds concluded their dance to settle into their serenade from the branches above the mares' heads. The family of raccoons that had emerged from the darkness swiftly and quietly each shook out a sack. In a split second, where the songbirds had been previously dancing there were now hundreds upon hundreds of fireflies, finally free of their furry captors. The nightbugs weaved a few circles around the mares in an eager rush to form a glowing cloud and cascade up into the sky toward their beacon: the moon.

This was the moment.
This was all for Aella.

Chanterelle stepped forward and expressed her love the only way she knew how.

Chest to chest, she pressed her nose into Aella's and all was right in this world.

There was nothing but her and Aella.
There was nothing but Aella and her.

That moment would forever be a perfect eternity for Chanterelle. The entire world could be burning to a crisp outside of this grove, but right there, right then... she had everything she would ever need.

Aella watched as the lightning bugs flitted about and took to soaring above. Her heart was in her throat as she watched them. They were beauty in motion. Her eyes went to Chanterelle's just as she pushed into her chest.

Aella's breath left her as Chanterelle pressed tight to her, and then their noses touched. All the world slowed, every particle and every second in the pure bliss of the moment. She could feel the thudding of Chanterelle's heart so close to her own chest, that it felt like it was a part of her. Her whole body ached with want, the sound of what she loved so much filling her ears.

"Chanterelle," she whispered softly. "I love you..."
