Astriana was taking a look around the area, still getting used to their new home. There uncle had decided to take over the care of her and her brothers, then had decided to move them to Ista Weyr. She didn't know what to think yet, but she was eager to have a chance at a new start. Her parents had really not seemed to want her or her brothers, their uncle seemed to actually want them. She was just about to go inside when she heard a chirp above her, before a little flit landed on her shoulder.
"Hello, little one, it is good to see you. Just enjoying a look around?"Astriana asked with a small smile. She reached over and patted her head gently.

Daimon had decided to take a tour of the Weyr as well, although he was being somewhat more energetic about it than his sister, running between places with some enthusiasm. "Ha! This place is huge!" he said, coming back to where Astri was standing. Meanwhile, Rowan was busy befriending the Weyr's occupants. Or, rather.. the furrier ones. He was currently fascinated by a stray feline that he was slowly charming into coming out of its hole. After giving his younger brother a worried look, Daimon turned back to his twin. "Beats the Hold by a mile. Hey, do you think we'll really get to ride dragons?" he asked her. He wasn't sure what to think about their becoming Candidates. Right now, it felt a little hard to believe. In less than a month, so much had changed. He gave another quick glance towards Rowan to make sure his brother's back was turned, then said to Astriana, "Hey, you know, I was thinking.. Dragons can talk in your head, right? If Rowan impressed, his dragon could tell him what people are saying. He'd be able to communicate with anyone he wanted." And Daimon would give up a hundred dragons of his own to give his brother that kind of liberation.

Astriana was stroking Caelia's head, her golden flit nuzzling her hand as she did so. She felt Caelia's warmth, letting her know that everything would be alright, she kissed the top of her head lovingly. She looked up when her twin came back to her and a laugh issued from her lips. He really did seem to be enjoying this, she was too, but her's was calmer and more cautious. After what happened with their parents, it was hard to open up to others. When Daimon asked his question, her own eyes drifted over to Rowan and she certainly hoped so. Her little brother was amazing, he deserved a wonderful life.
"I am still getting used to the fact we might be able to ride dragons. It just sounds incredible to me. And yes, I have heard that dragons can actually communicate telepathically with their riders and to others they want to too, after they impress anyway. It would be wonderful if he could get a dragon and could have him or her speak his words for him. Poor thing, I still feel sorry for him,"Astriana spoke quietly, tears leaking from her eyes.

R'yn normally didn't approach candidates. Being Weyrleader within a Pass meant he was constantly busy, constantly preparing, constantly making sure as few lives were lost as possible. His free time, what little he had, was spent with his Weyrmate and daughter, Tiry. Sometimes though, the occasional burst of conversation would hit his ears, and he would pause. Dragons talk in people's heads? That was dismissed as typical candidate chatter. They would learn about that in classes with their Weyrlingmaster, T'rel. The first lessons always focused on strengthening the dragonic bond. Wait. Someone named Rowan? And the boy speaking seemed to be familar with him. Huh. Dragons communicating for someone?
That was awkward. He would have to ask Lavi to explain that dragons only very rarely spoke to anyone but their riders. They wanted someone to Impress: someone who couldn't communicate on their own? That was impossible. Oblivious to the real reason the boy, whoever Rowan was, could not Impress, he made his way over to the two candidates.
He wished Ticene was there. She would've known their names. She kept track of the ins and outs of the Weyr. Surely she would've recognized these candidates. He wasn't sure how to address them. "I couldn't help overhearing," he began, "But you think a dragon would be able to communicate for someone?" While it was true that dragons often got messages to other riders quickly during Threadfall, the message-game during Weyrling classes had proved that to be impractical. Even dragons became confused!

((Capitilizing for signed Gloss, though in the future I'll just write what he means ^^ ))
Daimon broke into a smile at his sister's reaction. People thought she didn't care, but Daimon knew it was just because she felt too deeply, it was hard to let anyone in. He understood. He felt the same sometimes. He was about to reply, when an old man broke in and interrupted their conversation.
Daimon looked at him and frowned. Any other day, he would've pointed out how rude it was to eavesdrop on other people's conversations, but it happened that he was in an unusually good mood at that moment. "Are you a rider?" he asked the man, glare fading into a look of curiosity. "Isn't it true that dragons speak telepathically?" he asked. He was sure that he'd been told that it was, and that's how they communicated in threadfall and with people who were Holds away, but maybe it was one of those myths that were blown out of proportion.
Meanwhile, Rowan, who was still sitting with the feline (which had now come out of hiding and was rubbing its head again his knee) glanced over his shoulder to make sure his siblings were still there and spotted the adult rider among them. 'YOU TALK ABOUT WHAT' he signed with a questioning frown; 'What are you talking about?'. If it was just his siblings, he would've just asked, but as a rule, he never spoke in front of strangers. Their parents had given them each something different; Daimon's cruelty, Astri's cold shell.. Rowan they had given a deep selfconsciousness about his voice.

((R'yn is displeased that he's been described as an old man. xD He says he's twenty two!))
Was he a rider? It was somehow nice, to not be recognized and immediately named by status. He glanced at his shoulder knots. Ahh. These must have been the candidates who had just arrived. "I am," he said, flashing the boy a smile. "I'm sorry for interrupting," he added, feeling the need to apologize a second time. "Its true! Dragons speak to their riders telepathically. Often, to other dragons. Rarely to another human, unless their rider is weyrmated." The boy seemed particularly interested in this ability. R'yn had personally been interested in discovering what between was like, before he Impressed. He'd been Weyrbred, and had never left the Istan sands. It had been a treat to be able to do so!
"You seem especially interested in that ability," R'yn wondered aloud. "Any particular reason why?" He glanced towards Rowan, and for a moment, his expression became closed. Oh. Oh dear. The boy was about Ionan's age, he supposed, a bit older. But from the way he signed, R'yn had no trouble diagnosing him. The boy was deaf. And these candidates--they undoubtedly wanted their brother to join their candidancy. He was too young: and he could not permit a child with a handicap to attempt Impression.
The very idea felt like murder. "I see. Does he have a firelizard? I can arrange for him to--" he'd noticed the gold firelizard on Astri's shoulder. No need, then. He'd been about to offer an egg from Zara's most recent clutch.

"Hnn. S'okay." the boy said gruffly, warming up somewhat. At least he was being a useful interruption, taking the time to answer their questions. "But they talk to you a lot." Daimon went on. "And they can hear, right?" he asked. Even if his dragon couldn't talk for him, at least Rowan would have someone to talk to him, who he wouldn't have to ask to slow, who he'd be able to hear, always.
It was good R'yn had answered his own questions, since Daimon had chosen that moment to stop listening to him. His attention turned back to Rowan, who was still distracted by the feline. 'We're talking..' he started to sign, but Rowan had turned already turned away. Frowning, Daimon kicked Rowan's shoe to startle him. "Hey! If you ask a question, pay attention when people answer it!" he said, once he'd turned around. He jerked his thumb towards R'yn. "This rider here's explaining about dragons. So you should listen up! Well.. figuratively, at least." he teased. 'What about you?' Rowan signed. "I'm going to see if I can find the kitchens!" he said with a grin, before shouting a farewell to their sister and running off down yet another twisting tunnel.

Astriana looked over when she heard an unfamiliar voice and quickly wiped away the tears still lingering on her cheeks. Then she put her 'mask' back in place while her brother talked to the man. She listened to the two talking, occasionally stroking Caelia's head, waiting until Daimon began speaking to Rowan. She bowed softly to the man before them, telling from the way he carried himself that he must be important.
"Yes, my little brother does have a firelizard, it was one from Caelia's clutch she had not too long ago. Thank you for the offer, however, even if you did not finish it,"Astri spoke politely. She had great respect for people in power, knowing many of them earned those positions.

"Yes, of course. I have a friend who says his bronze doesn't stop talking, not for anything. Gereth, mine," he gestured to his dragon, "likes to wake me up declaring Thread or fire. Or, even that my weyrmate has gone missing. Quite frusterating."
It is not my fault you choose to sleep so heavily..
Quiet, you. Help me decide how to tell them that their brother cannot Impress. It took only a moment to refocus on Daimon. His eyes had glazed over, telling that he'd spoken to his dragon. "Oh, hear? Dragons hear whatever they wish to. Quite like harpers. He shifted awkwardly at Astri's bow. Huh. So she recognized him at least! Still, he had to wonder at that--did she simply have more experience reading Weyr knots?
"Of course," he muttered. "It seemed only right to allow him a firelizard. But I'm afraid, even if he were old enough to stand, the dragons would not choose him."

Astriana watched him talk about his dragon and could tell he was talking to him for a moment. She wondered what it was like to have that kind of connection with a dragon, it must be really cool. She was quiet as he spoke, internally smiling, not seeing anything wrong with the man. He also seemed to speak with authority, so that added to her belief that he was one in power. Then she heard him say something about a dragon not picking her brother.
"I hope you do not find me rude for asking, but why would a dragon not want my brother? I think he is very intelligent and very calm. He is a little hesitant, but that is because of our parents, I am afraid. They never cared about us,"Astri explained. Why had she told him that? She figured it was something he needed to know.

Find her rude for asking a question he expected? Huh. No, he'd expected her to ask. Siblings had every right to be concerned about their siblings, and though he had none, himself, he'd been fairly close to his milk brother. The girl's caution alarmed him. Was she hold red? He was accustomed to the Istan Lord Holder's disrespect for himself: the young Weyrleader. This was new. Was she afraid of him? Was she afraid of showing too much emotion? He knew that girls especially, fled to the Weyrs for er--freedom. That didn't seem to be the case here.
"Well, we've never known what reasons a dragon hatches with: but they know who their riders are by the time they hatch. Sometimes they pick a person who fits them perfectly. Sometimes, like Gereth and I, they balance each other out. By the time I Impressed, I was almost on my fifteenth turn. I was as wild as they came, pranking with N'rin and flirting with girls. When I Impressed, Gereth helped me calm down. I thought I knew every rule there was, being a Weyrbrat. Gereth was stern." He grinned at the memory, then seemed to remember the topic at hand. "Whatever the reason for Impression, dragons have never Impressed to the impaired." He gave the girl an apologetic face. "It doesn't matter if he's clever, or quick. I don't know if its because dragons know they're putting their riders in constant danger. Maybe they sense it like a lack of empathy... I don't know. But dragons do. They always know."

Astriana listened to the other's explanation of a bond between a dragon and future rider, she found it fascinating a dragon knew who their rider was when they hatched. She wondered if they could sense something or if it was just some kind of instinct. She started to wonder what kind of dragon would want to be with her, someone who had trouble opening up. Then she heard the last part and she had to turn her head to hide tears that were threatened to emerge. So her little brother couldn't have a dragon? It didn't seem fair, though she supposed the life of a rider could be dangerous. She looked over to her brothers, knowing her brother Daimon would not take this well at all.
"I guess I can understand, but it just seems a shame he can't impress. I guess I just figured he would be able to, since he can do so much else. And you don't have to look nervous around me, I respect you because I can see you are a leader. I am pretty good at reading people. I am cold, but mostly because I am scared,"Astri told him, feeling she needed to tell him that..maybe to get him to understand. She didn't look at him, not without her 'mask' in place.

She understood? Oh, good! R'yn almost let out a relieved sigh. "Yes, it is. But it can be a good thing, too, you know. Not everyone is meant to be a rider. Maybe he'll discover a talent in another craft! Why, if Tiry suddenly took an interest in becoming a harper, I certainly wouldn't bar her from it." Weyrbred or not, R'yn thought, Tiry deserved to be whatever she wanted to be. "He's a bit young to spend out to become an apprentice, though," he added, glancing at Rowan. "There's a weyrbrat that looks to about his age. If he can read lips--" he'd met deaf traders before, "I'm sure he could get Ionan to understand him. They could be playmates."
He paused at her next statement. She'd noticed he'd been nervous. That was awkward. "You're right," he admitted with a grin. "Weyrleader, actually. I'm R'yn, and I've told you Gereth's name. Good to meet you. Well now that you know who I am, why don't you tell me who you are? I have a guess--but I don't have the candidate roster with me." He showed empty hands. "Well, no need to be afraid! Dragonfolk are good folk, as far as I've seen. You'll be welcomed warmly."

Astriana looked up with her 'mask' back in place, when he said there was someone around her brother's age. She wondered if Rowan would like a playmate his own age, she would have to ask him. Then she felt surprise as she heard the man say he was the Weyrleader. Se knew he was important, but she never would have guessed he was one of the leaders.
"Couldn't you let my brother impress, make an exception? Or are you worried he will be hurt because he can't hear danger?"Astri asked. She couldn't say the same worry had not come across her own mind on more than one occasion.

R'yn may have taken the time to explain his position, had he been asked. As a weyrbrat, and even as a weyrling, he'd had no interest in positions of power. He had informed his weyrlingmaster of that: but L'ren had been right to push him. He saw that now, even though he'd resented it at the time. He hadn't expected to fall in love with Ticene. He certainly hadn't expected to be woken at dawn to find his dragon chasing Calith! L'ren had been right; though he himself had not seen the potential then. Perhaps he shouldn't have revealed his identity. He should have expected inquiries concerning exceptions. Shards.
"I'm sorry," he said, with a shake of his head, "I can't make an exception. I don't control who the dragons choose, nor why. It might be better for him not to stand, as well. Maulings aren't rare occurances." The last two clutches from Calith had been particularly--interesting! "I can't have him on the sands. It'd only bring danger onto himself, and onto others. He wouldn't hear a hatchling's warning. Or candidates telling him to move out of the way. One girl nearly lost an eye. Do you want him to be blind, as well as deaf?" Shards, the boy was eight. Ionan had climbed down to the sands at six turns, and may well have been killed if not for Calith's intervention. Why were they pressing it so? It would've been expected, had the boy been the proper age for candidancy.
"Maybe his hearing will have improved by the time he's twelve, though. If it does, talk to me then."
