At first, he had considered asking Mark about the fragment, but to be honest, he really didn't want to put up with semi-coherent answers that probably cost $500 a piece. And so while asking the death lead meant his life was in significantly more danger, it was a risk he was willing to take. Not to mention he should probably... thank him for getting promoted and, well, not getting executed.
And so he arrived at Caelius' office, and stood at the doorway, hoping he wasn't intruding on anything. "Sir?"

The Death lead had a rather impressive map sprawled on his desk upon entrance. Behind him was the return of the board, a collage of profiles, photos and clippings of faces that looked quite familiar. In fact if Jake looked carefully, he could very evidently see his own name and photo pinned on the board with a giant red X over it. A few other names had red X's such as Gale, Otto, Taym, and Shiloh. The map itself detailed Deus Ex headquarters, less so a map and more a drafting layout complete with windows, exits, corridors and segregated rooms.
Caelius ignored Jake and continue to draw a very straight line from one side of the corridor, and then a second just all rather meticulously.

Jake would have been impressed by said map had he not noticed his face pinned on a board behind the death lead... with a red x on it. Well. That was... a little unsettling. Maybe he should ask Gale, considering his face was on that board too.
He shook his head. Maybe later. He had questions, questions he was hoping to get answers to. Or, at least, that was the plan. Clearing his throat, he stepped inside.
"...sir? I have some questions about some things I saw during the last mission."

He paused between his geometric artistry skills and then started on a perpendicular line leading down the main hallway on the map. "Some questions about some things." The Death lead clearly wasn't impressed by Jake's verbal skills. The pause drifted longer. "And."

Oh. Was there something wrong about the way he said that? Was question supposed to be singular? But he had more than one question... and saw several things. ENGLISH WAS HARD OK.
"I, um... I ran into a horseman that had some sort of red fragment embedded in him, and it had somehow brought him to life. I think it was the same one that I... failed to retrieve last time, and was told... it had something to do with destruction and... the merge? I wanted to ask if you knew anything about it, sir."

"I am well aware about where I am sending you on missions." The Death lead looked up sharply. "Don't ask idle questions Jake. Everyone asks questions, they take responsive answers and do absolutely nothing with them. If information could be considered an advantage they are basically pissing in their own ******** seats and leaving someone else to clean up the mess. Even if, for some unknown ******** reason, I decided to share information regarding your vague questions, what would you do with it. What can you give me back in return. You are a full Hunter now, and I if you cannot keep moving forward then you, like most people on this island, are just baggage waiting on the next inevitable mission to, like useless baggage, struggle and die."

Jake opened his mouth, and then closed it again, resisting the urge to ask just exactly where they had been sent, because Mark sure as hell didn't seem like he knew. Part of him wondered why he had even came. He should have known Caelius hated questions, and to be honest, what was he really going to do with that information? He hadn't thought that far.
But... he had promised. He remembered the weapon tablets, remembered the bird-like creature and the woman who had helped him. He remembered the vision that had promised them power when he had touched the fragment. There were too many unanswered questions, too much uncertainty. Lack of information was always a dangerous thing, and going into a mission blind was pretty much guaranteed to get you killed. It was something he wasn't willing to risk again, ether to himself or another.
"I would put it to use, sir. The fragment I encountered was dangerous, and had the power to animate a dead horseman. When I touched it, it attempted to coerce Sherry and I into obeying it. If there are more out there, they should either be destroyed or contained. If more falls into the horsemen's hands, or even into the hands of a weak-willed hunter, Deus will be in grave danger." He took a deep breath, not quite knowing what exactly he was getting himself into, but he knew that things had to change. He couldn't be the brash hot-head he once was. Everything needed meticulous planning and preparation, and action needed to be taken. "I know I'm still green, but if I am granted permission, I want to take charge of locating and retrieving these fragments. But I need to know what they are capable of to be able to do this."

"This island is always in grave ******** danger." Caelius didn't seem like the sarcastic type, but there was always a first for everything. He also didn't seem too surprised or at all impressed by Jake's speech. The map got rotated so he could draw perfectly horizontal lines with his ruler instead of vertical. "And yet you are still here. Saving the world, the island, each other is a lie constructed to tell Hunters that cannot think for themselves. They have a goal and then feel important, despite not even grasping what they are fighting for or how meaningless their lives really are. Even if they knew answers they still remain powerless. You will not be given permission to retrieve any fragments, not at your level, but as you have no other purpose or reason, I will assign you work to make you feel important."
"I will set you on future weapon tablet retrieval duty. There are certain division leads who think our resources are infinite and therefore breaking ******** weapons tablets is somehow allowed, which means everyone else has to pay the ******** consequences. You will be deployed post unsuccessful missions to retrieve important limited resources."
He didn't really say much of anything else and just continued working. There were no ifs, ands, buts, just a statement.

... well. It wasn't what he expected, but it was better than nothing, he supposed. Weapon tablets WERE pretty important... He remained silent for a few minutes as he watched Caelius continue to draw, wondering what exactly he was mapping out. Though, it was probably something he'd be given an extremely vague if entirely unhelpful response to. That, or he'd just snap at him and call him useless some more.
Part of him wondered if he should mention the creature and figure he saw, but perhaps Caelius already knew. He seemed to know everything. "Thank you, sir. Is there... anything else you wanted to say?" Perhaps it should have been the other way around but at this point he really didn't know what to do anymore.

"You will be deployed on missions when necessary but if consider this your permanent role. It means even without official assignment your priority post mission should be in retrieving weapons tablets, even if it takes multiple revisit. I will expect a monthly progress report from you. You are dismissed."

P-permanent? Well, he supposed weapon tablet retrieval wasn't something so bad. At least it wasn't something like minipet duty. The mere idea made him shudder. "T-thank you sir." It wasn't exactly what he had come for, but he had to admit the idea sounded promising. Perhaps future missions would help shed some light on this whole fragment thing.
Without another word he turned to leave.
