Is this guild dead now? I came here to see if there is anything about Sakuracon 2014. Latest threads seem to be about 2013 and the guild home page shows the banner from 2012.
If anyone is still reading this I might be interesting in sharing a hotel room for the 2014. I could also provide a ride for anyone up near Bellingham, WA. Due to distance my preference would be to check in to the hotel Thursday afternoon so I could do early registration Friday morning and just generally enjoy the day. I've done it both ways and that is more enjoyable. I've also found a hotel with a kitchenette helps save on costs.
I'm male, I don't don't care what your gender is but I'm not looking for anything weird, just sharing expenses.

The guild does seem pretty dead sad
I just got done reserving a hotel for myself and was hoping to see some other people excited about Sakura Con 2014!
Rooms with a kitchen can help save on costs but I almost never get them. I just heat up a hot pocket or something like that in a microwave. I don't want to waste time cooking when all the fun is going on!
With DJHellsing onto another job I doubt that Gaia will come to the convention this year. I recall the first year they came and I was so excited then I did not get into line in time and missed it. sad The next year I was able to go in and see the panel. Last few years the room has been huge but it seems like less and less people attend the panel every year.

And was price the decider or other factors?

And was price the decider or other factors? I got the last economy room the hotel had and I only got it because someone cancelled as I was on the phone with the desk clerk. Well location was a prime factor. I have stayed all over Seattle in hotels but this year I wanted to be close so I went with the Sheraton. For two beds it is like 150 a night. I was going to go with the next level up but that was 220 a night. I just happened to get lucky. I would of had my hotel sooner but someone was on the fence about going and kept saying we could stay with her relatives. She said today no so I scrambled to find a place. Like I said I just got super lucky on someone canceling as I was trying to get a room. I called a lot of hotels all around the convention (within a four block radius) and I seemed to be getting the best deal with the Sheraton or Grand Hyatt. I had stayed at the Hyatt before and it is a nice hotel but I could not understand the automated system to get through to a clerk. Worst system ever, sounded like the computer was in a tunnel underwater.

Between gas (100 miles each way), hotel, food etc. the cost of the actual ticket is not too bad. It all adds up though. Last time I was there DJ was there but I can see where you are coming from. DJ was pretty good at working a crowd. If I went to a Gaia panel now I'd almost be afraid to hear what they are planning. They don't appear to be working on any new games or much in the way of features or just about anything that does not involve 'pay us cash'. Makes me wonder how far they are with that adult site they were talking about.

Maybe the convention meet up form would be a better place to look. Seems to get more traffic then this guild. I know it adds up. I have to take the train to go, then get a taxi to the hotel, hotel cost, food cost (I do things like a bagel for breakfast to save money), and anything from the vendors hall I want. DJ was due for 2013 but due to things beyond his control he was not able to go. It has been years since another staff member was at Sakura con. I get Gaia is a business and needs money. I however am not a fan of their methods (like so many others) for getting money. I get why they do it and despite what people in site feedback are saying it must be working or they would change tactics once again. Even though Gaia does have a lot of cash features I am sure things coming up wont all deal with just cash. The new animal base is part cash and part gold. Or they could just show us new designs of things that will be put in the cash shop. xd

I think though the practical reason for that is I could at least review their post history and get a bit of an idea what the person was like. I went two years in a row, the last being I think 2011. DJ was there both years. As for new stuff, used to be Gaia would talk about it some to try to get you excited about what was coming. The lack of that, coupled with the manic pace of releasing new cash shop items makes me think the energy / time is being devoted to things other than site development. It is also worth noting that all this started about the same time they discontinued the weekly ask the admin, thus making it harder for Gaians to say, "Hey, what is going on?" It's like they knew they were planning some of this and didn't want to be put on the spot. I like talking to people in the forums but otherwise these days I'm kind of 'meh' about the site. It's kind of ironic. I worked my fish tanks hard to build up millions in gold and now there isn't much I am interested in buying. Plus with all the gold generators Gaia is selling market prices have gotten insane. I sold a dolphin this past week for 4.5 million. Anywho - I hope you have a wonderful time at Sakuracon! smile

Early enough you might find someone who still has a spot in their room open. Still the internet so do be safe whatever you do. I have been going for years consistently. I did miss like 08 or 09 but I was really ill so I could not go. sad I normally do not post in site feedback, I hate getting attacked by people, but I read a lot of what people say and consider a lot of different angles. Gaia is not a public business so they can keep things hush hush if they desire. I do like how they use to give fun tidbits at conventions though. I really miss ask the admin but seeing as how some people were really mean to the admins who took the time to do it I can see why they had to change things. The "blog" is a joke though. I agree the marketplace is insane but obviously they are selling and since they are easy to pump out Gaia will keep pumping them out. I still see pretty shinnies I want on her at times and I am sure my whislist will never go empty but it has been awhile (six months or more) since I freaked out over the release of something and had to buy it instantly on the marketplace. I hope you are able to figure out a way to go if that is what you want and that if you go you have an amazing time full of fond memories!

Safety - I'm older, male and physically strong so the risk is less than it could be. Still wise to be careful though. My concern would be more for my possessions like my camera or laptop than my physical safety. Before I shared a room with a friend I've known in real life for 40 years so trust was not an issue. What specific web site are you talking about for the hotel share threads? I think the one that used to be Sakuracon got closed. I did actually just find a potential room share on the Kumoricon web site. It has threads for Sakuracon hotel shares. I'm waiting on my site registration to be approved so I can post.

Everyone needs to take safety precautions no matter their gender, age, or physical strength. Leave behind expensive possessions? I take a camera but I keep it on me while at the con and I am a light sleeper so if someone got into my bag I would hear them. On Gaia in the convention/meetup forms. People who are going to Sakura con are posting in a couple threads. http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/gaia-meet-ups-convention-tour/f.249/ Yes the Sakura con one got closed, they did not want to be liable for anything. At least that is what I was told by people I know who work the convention. Good luck with that!

Tried it a long time ago and didn't find anything related to my area and forgot about it. Agreed that safety is for all. I only meant that my gender and physique minimizes some risks. I saw that in my travels around the world in the navy. I'm torn on the tech gear. My Lumix camera is small and easy to carry with me at the con and takes 'good' pictures. My Nikon D90 takes awesome photos. Just the jpegs are visibly better but it also shoots in RAW so I have tons more clarity and editing options. BUT.... it is heavier and sucks to carry it around the con the entire time - thus I end up leaving it some in my hotel room or hidden in my van. I'm not very creative so I don't do cosplay (can't seem to come up with costumes) but I really enjoy walking around and taking photos of all the amazing costumes other people have come up with. And my laptop - - Well, maybe it is age catching up to me but I just don't have the energy to be at the con the entire time the doors are open. So some of the time I relax in the hotel room and it's nice to be able to surf the web, stay in touch with friends and so on. I don't have a smart phone. I suppose a possible solution would be to leave the laptop home and find a more comfortable camera bag - like maybe one of those shoulder sling models. My current bag is a fairly standard neck strap model and my neck gets sore. All of which is not your problem of course. Just thinking out loud. lol smile Thanks for your help.

I just got a small one but usually so much going on I want to do that I get very few pictures. I use to cosplay and I would love to again but I cannot convince anyone to cosplay with me. It seems like Gaia does not do much with it anymore since DJ is no longer with them. I just try to take safety as seriously as possible. Better safe then sorry. Thankfully nothing has ever happened to me at the convention that makes me fear for my safety and hopefully nothing ever does happen. Tv in the room? Not the web but rest for an hour while watching a show. Take a nap? I will have to take your word on the camera talk since I don't know cameras that well. I just got a small one but usually so much going on I want to do that I get very few pictures. I use to cosplay and I would love to again but I cannot convince anyone to cosplay with me. Plus the last cosplay I did caused me to miss out on things due to stopping for people to take pictures. Good luck figuring everything out. You got a few weeks left to try to figure out what you can do. smile So in the end I didn't go this year. I hope you had a good time. smile Aww I am sorry. I did go and I had a lot of fun. I made some new friends and enjoyed a lot of awesome panels. Like always I saw a bunch of epic anime that I want to see the rest of now but this year I was actually under my budget for the vendor's hall! Congrats on staying under budget. Or.. did you just set a bigger budget this year? haha!
