Raemos stretched, happy to have found the rare and beautiful flowering plant. He couldn't wait to bring it home and show it to Vona. He was sure she would think it was as amazing as he did.

He looked around, wondering if there were other interesting Serenian plants nearby. Just because he only knew of the one didn't mean that there weren't more things to find...

Suluksati was out hunting, the refreshing light of the morning bringing her back to full magic power, and making her whole in body, even after the fierce incident of the day before. That orderite had been strong - probably from all the dragon hunting he had done. Hmph. She hunt for food, and what did the dragon hunters hunt for? Sport. She wished she didn't hate them... she hadn't started out hating them. But now she was starting to, especially when she thought of the orderite of the other day. Sure he had been hunting Borgnahs, but she was sure he would happily have bagged a dragon...

Speaking of...

Suluksati scented the breeze.

It was the strange boy that he had had with him, the polite familiar one. Nearby, even. Interesting, that. What was he doing?

She walked out of the bushes. "Good morning" she intoned, regarding him curiously. "What do you have there?"

Raemos went very still, listening, before turning around slowly and nonthreateningly. He wasn't sure if he was relieved to see the white khehora or afraid. He smiled anyway, being as friendly as possible - he had no desire to be clawed.

"Oh! Good morning!" he said, holding his hands out in a gesture of nonthreat, "I'm just... gathering herbs. Am I on your territory? I can leave, if you wish." he glanced down at the herbs in his hand, "And leave you these petalias if you wish." The more he looked at her, the more he did recognize her.

Suluksati cocked her head at him and approached, her feathers flat against her over thin body. "Not at all." she said, approaching slowly, her tail waving gently. "There is no need to apologize. I have no territory." she sat nearby, coiling her tail around herself, "I am just... a wanderer."

She watched him for a moment. "You are an oblivionite." she said frankly and conclusively. "Would you..." she felt odd being so blunt, but after life in the wild, she guessed it had to be inevitable. "happen to have been attacked by a flock of Aedauns some years ago?"

Oblivionite. He hated that word. He hated how it described him but was not him. He hated the difference it implied between him and his family.

"Yes." he said, equally blunt, and perhaps a little more curtly than he ought to have been. "I was." the anger passed quickly enough, and he realized he had just been rude to a beast that could easily eat him. "I'm sorry. My... differences... are a sore point. Please do not mention them again." he didn't like to say that either, but it was better than screaming at her. He was not a petulant tantruming child.

"As for that... would you be an Aedaun Khehora?" he asked. It had been an Aedaun that had saved him, looking much like her. He doubted, as she did, that there were very many Aedaun Khehora who had protected an oblivionite from an Aedaun dragon attack.

Suluksati valued manners a great deal - they were all that separated her from a wild beast, the only trappings of civilization and civilized life she had left. She expected it from others as well. His breach in manners did not go unnoticed, but she nodded at his explanation. She understood. To an extent.

"Indeed." she said, "And thus we have met before. I thought as much." It was confirmed. He was that Oblivionite. And he had survived long enough to grow up.

"I am glad to see you alive and well. It is rare that I have a success in my life..." though in a sense that encounter was a bitter failure. But he had been but a child, attacked for no reason other than what he was. "And rarer still that I can meet that success in person" Her little peisio friend had since flown off to another part of the lake to start his adult dragon life, and she hadn't been able to find him since.
"So." she crooned elegantly, "It is a pleasure to meet you, little one. We did not properly introduce ourselves before, though the circumstances were dire. I am Suluksati, of the Aedaun clan and bound to no family. I have taken the title of..." she hesitated. "... The defender of Dragons."

"Hello Suluksati..." he said, offering a hand out for her to sniff and, hopefully, not bite off. "I am Raemos Medrol." He put the petalia fronds away in his rucksack. "And it is a pleasure to meet..." and not be eaten by "you." he frowned, "But... Defender of dragons..." he drew his offered hand back somewhat, "What do you mean by that?"

"I mean..." she explained, giving his hand a polite sniff and a nudge, to let the child know it was okay, that she would not bite. "That I have devoted my life to protecting dragons from depredation and needless hunting." She sighed, "My goal is to defend dragons from hunters, and, sometimes from each other."

What a strange occupation to have, protecting dragons. He wasn't sure if dragons needed to be protected. Did they? They hunted and raided magescan homes, and were very dangerous creatures to tangle with! He didn't think they should be completely exterminated - they were magestic in their own way - but they were ferocious beasts that could not be bargained with, trusted, or left alone. They were dangerous. The hunts were necessary.

This would, clearly, be a terrible time to mention that he himself had hunted dragons. He brought his hand back completely, keeping his posture nonthreatening. "I... see." he said, giving her a small, polite smile. Her self-proclaimed title raised more questions than it answered, but he could only think of one that was polite.

"Why?"

Suluksati fluffed her wings. "Because, Raemos Medrol, there is a need." she said. She tried not to let her feathers ruffle too much. After all, didn't she expect the question of why? It was a common question to ask. Only she saw it as obvious that she should protect dragons. Because it was her.

"They are ferocious and wild creatures, bound to their primal natures. I don't believe they should be hunted down and slaughtered simply for behaving according to their natures." she explained. Perhaps she could turn this young magescan to her cause? She always held out hope that she could convince someone that what she was doing was right and sane. Sometimes she wasn't wholly convinced of that.

"Self defense is different, the use of force to defend when they attack. I do not mind the deaths of dragons so much when it is clear that they instigated it and there is no other alternative." she explained, "I do, however, oppose hunting them in their homes."

Well. She was on a roll now. "I believe that we should leave them be. And, perhaps, if we do not hunt them, in time we can live in harmony with these magestic beings and benefit from the primal magics they wield..." she looked at Raemos, hopeful. "Don't you agree, Raemos Medrol?" she asked, "That living in harmony with them is better than the endless and needless bloodshed of killing them for sport and orbs?"

Raemos was a little taken aback. It was clear she was very passionate about the subject, and that she wanted him to also be passionate. "Hmmm..." he said, biting back his tongue. It was probably best to agree with a passionate Khehora.

"Lets walk." he said, delaying, trying to turn off the twitching neurons in his brain that wanted to argue and debate. That could get him killed.

Finally, reluctantly, he spoke. "Pardon me, Suluksati of the Aedaun clan, but is this a philosophical discussion?" he asked, turning to her as they began to walk through the forest, "Will you eat me if I bring you a... um..." he struggled for the word, "Dissenting..." there it was. "Opinion?"

Suluksati was a little taken aback herself. Normally she was called crazy right off the bat. Was this little one going to listen? her heartbeat became a hopeful pounding in her thin chest.

"It can be a philosophical..." she barely remembered the word. Seren's light, it had been a long time since she had spoken to the Philosopher Khehorian of her clan. It had been a long time since she'd seen them, longer still since she'd felt she'd had any sort of connection to them. And she would probably never see them again.

A Ora-like delight began to flow through her. She had always loved those discussions and arguments. "If you want." she said, tail waving excitedly as she walked beside him, towering over him in a mountain of feathers, "And I will not harm you should you..." it took her a while to recall the word, and she rumbled neutrally. "Dissent. I would like to know what you have to say." she stared at him, intent on him and his opinion as she would - should - be on prey.
