Battle Guide for Quick Ref
Shard Quest Quick Ref

[ Setting : ] The portal opens up to the end of a path at the small mouth of a cavern. There seems to be enough room to slip inside around a rock formation before the area opens up. Everything feels damp and the rocks are slippery, the sound of water dripping from above splashing down into puddles of varying depths and sizes. It is clear that no one has set foot in these caves for a considerable amount of time... No one human, at least.

Arland glanced around as he stepped out of the portal before moving just to the side to make room for Inoke to follow after him without actually bumping in to him. Everything was so still... So quiet, peaceful. He breathed it in, enjoying being completely along up until he heard footsteps on the ground behind him.

Letting his breath go slowly, he took another step forward, cracking open a glow rod to light the cavern ahead of him as he entered the crevice only to slide down, landing feet first in a shallow puddle.

"'Ey, Ino... Careful on the way down. First step is a little bit slippery!" He called back over his shoulder, glancing around. "I think we're in the right place, at least."

gaia_crown [ Round 1: ]
This round takes place just inside the entrance of the Location, barely a few footsteps in. All is quiet; no one is there but you and yours. For now.

- All players roll a 6 sided dice. This roll does not consume any stamina.
Roll 1: For every player that rolls this, you trigger a boss: a rusted, reanimated wrought iron mirror revenant.
- Yes, that means if two players roll a 1, you now have two bosses... congratulations.
- No one can proceed to Round 2 until it has been defeated.
- The DM is in charge of keeping track of the boss's HP. The boss has 30/ 30 HP and does 3 auto damage every time it is attacked. Normal battle rules apply.
-IF NO ONE rolls a 1, or if you have defeated the boss, you may proceed to Round 2.

He paused in putting his foot on the first step at Arlands words and after hearing the splash. "Couldn't we have gone somewhere nice?" He stepped carefully, trying to keep his footing as he followed his friend down into the cavern."Why is everywhere we go always dark and depressing."

He managed not to slip too much on the rocks until he caught up with the other, peering around in the gloom.

"Lead on oh fearless one"

"I don't know that I'd particularly consider this depressing. Dark, maybe, but... Look at this place!" He called out the last pretty loudly, listening to his voice echo throughout the cavernous space.

"The acoustics are incredible." He flashed Inoke a grin before turning to carry on, taking the light stick with him.

It was upon entering the second chamber that he paused again, wondering if somehow they might have come in through the wrong entrance. It looked like someone had once been down this path bringing with them tall pieces of mirrored glass standing every which way. Many of the pieces were unscathed by the passing of time whereas others had been clearly shattered.

Arland shivered, shaking off the eeriest feeling as he put his head down, following the path at his feet. Mirrors in the dark scared the heck out of him... But at least it meant they were on the right trail?

gaia_crown [ Round 2: ]
All players now continue into a hall of shattered mirrors, accompanied by architecture fitting of your chosen location. Ruins walled with mirrors, simple shards of glass propped against cave walls, etc.

- All players roll 1d100 to determine their result.
Roll 1-25: It appears that you've lost your way, and the halls get darker and darker with every turn. Keep rolling, and subtract 3 Stamina because of how long it took to find your way.
Roll 26-50: You are entranced by your own reflection in a nearby mirror. A whispering runs through your mind, full of all your doubts and fears and-- you snap out of it. Keep rolling, and subtract 1 Stamina.
Roll 51-70: The corridor ends rather abruptly, opening into a steep drop. However, there's a ladder, and it leads to another level of the same kind of hallway you were in before. Weird. Keep rolling, and subtract 1 Stamina.
Roll 71-100: You manage to make it through the hall of mirrors unscathed. Continue to Round 3.

"Shhush!" He waved a hand at the other man as his voice echoed around the cavern. "Okay ... now it's just creepy and don't shout. God knows what's down here. You don't want it charging around looking for whoever the loud mouth is."

He nudged Arland before stepping carefully around a broken mirror frame. "This is very, what's that book ... through the looking glass? If you see a cat, run."

Somewhere in getting distracted looking where he was stepping he took a turn that Arland hadn't and lost the light. "Grreeeat." He sighed and felt around on the walls to try to find his way back where he was supposed to be.

Nothing good came out of it other than stubbed toes and a sliced hand. Stupid mirrors.

"Still dark. ********." Sighing he tried to inch carefully around the hallways looking for whereever Arland and the light had gone.

Groping around corners while trying not to get a hand chewed off on something his fingers eventually landed on coat. Grabbing on he leaned around the corner. "'Land! God ... where the hell did you go?! I thought we were supposed to be doing this together. Not you wandering off to be the hero and leaving me to get eaten by god knows what."

He glared at the elder boy before noticing they were at least through all the broken glass and 'wonderland' feeling.

"Stairs. Are you kidding me?" Sighing he tried to ignore that his foot hurt from kicking uneven floor as he stared up the staircase to where it disappeared into the darkness.

When he came out of the mirrored pass he found himself facing a flight of stairs that towered up above him, reminding him very much of a scene from a video game he had once played. There was no stained glass, however, and despite taking a quick look around he did not see a foul mouthed duck without pants or an over sized dog making a 'hayuk' sound as a companion. There were no Heartless and he was not being asked to pick his path or choose his destiny.

You've already picked it.

Arland shook that thought from his mind, bringing a hand up to knock a dread back behind his ear as he glanced back over his shoulder. That was weird... Inoke had been right behind him, right? The whole mirror thing must have gotten to him more than he had expected it to. Maybe time was passing differently. Maybe...

He felt the tug at his coat before he heard the Inoke's voice, summoning Tivadar to his hand and ready to take a swing until the other young man addressed him. "What do you mean where have I been? I took one glance at the mirrors and then just... Followed the path down the hall. Wasn't going to stick around in that room for long. Gave me the heebie jeebies."

He made a face, swatting Inoke's hand off of his coat before giving him a quick once over. "You look like hell, man. Where have you been?" He then gave him another look over. "Man, you look worse coming out of that mess than I did... Didn't hurt yourself too bad, did you?"

He did not give Inoke much time to respond, instead turning back towards the stairs. "That?" He made a gesture to the crumbling spiral of stone before them, trying to make light of the situation ahead of them. "That's nothing. I used to climb stairs like that all the time back in private school. Morning, noon and night. Upstairs both ways. Never down."

As he was talking a grin was on his lips, eyes steadily on Inoke as if trying to reassure the other that it would be easy peasy compared to whatever he had just gone through in the mirrored halls. That look didn't last for long, however. The grin turned into a look of start, lips parting into a gasp and eyes wide as the foot that had stepped back caught on a crumbling part of the first step and it began to collapse beneath him.

It was like a scene out of a nightmare; the one where you were falling through darkness unable to tell whether or not you were ever going to stop. His heart was in his throat and he couldn't even find enough voice to scream past the first startled cry as he began to tumble down. Arland cursed that Tivadar the Gryphon was Tivadar the Horseman's Pick and could not save him from what would surely be his death by swooping down on wings that he no longer possessed. He cursed that there were things in life that he would never again be able to do... Things that he would never be able to say...

From the cavern far below the stairs came the sound of a splash as Arland hit water deep enough to cushion his fall, if not knock the wind completely from him as he plunged into its depths.

On the ledge above the light rod that he had been holding lay precariously balanced on the edge of the ledge waiting as if to see whether or not Inoke would chose to continue on...

gaia_crown [ Round 3: ]
You reach a large, seemingly insurmountable... staircase. Yes. A staircase. Crumbling, precarious, and ever so tall.

- All players need to roll to get a total of 25 steps each to make it to the next round.
- All players must roll 1d10. This is how many steps your character walks up, accompanied by the following effect:
Roll 1: You slip on nothing. Subtract 1 Stamina.
Roll 2: With a spring in your step, you manage to not cut your feet on a huge shard of glass. Subtract 1 Stamina.
Roll 3: - 50% of your remaining HP. A large shard of glass slices into your abdomen.
Roll 4: Instant death for you. Return to Round 1, reroll stamina, and proceed.
Roll 5: Fog obscures your view, so you step on glass caltrops. Subtract 3 Stamina.
Roll 6: -5 HP. A vicious hand wraps around your ankle, cutting into your flesh. Subtract 2 Stamina.
Roll 7-10: Nothing happens. Subtract 1 Stamina.

"Cuts and bruised feet no thanks to you taking the light off and wandering away without me." He rubbed his arm where he'd bumped pretty hard into a wall on the way. "I told you this place wasn't right. You take one step and end up all fine and I have to go stumbling around in the dark. How is that fair?"

"Next you're going to tell me it snowed in the hallways. You're starting to sound like an old fart." He smirked. "Sure you're not getting wrinkles?" The jokes probably would have continued had the stairs not crumbled under Arlands foot, sending the other down.

"Land!" He peered over the edge calling out to the other. The moments between when the other fell and the light sound of a splash seemed like forever and a breath rushed out of him that he hadn't realized he'd been holding. "Holy crap." He reached up and picked up the light stick before straightening up.

Staring up at the staircase he gumped and suppressed shudder. He had no idea what was really up there or how he was even going to make it that far without ending up dead

or worse. Whatever worse might be. Taking a deep breath and hoping Arland's bad luck gave him a bit of good lucky he started up the stairs.

Steps 8/25

His first burst made pretty good progress and he stopped part way up to catch his breath. Looking behind he he stared down into the darkness for a moment before looking back up. This was the sort of thing he was going to have to get used to. Facing the unknown and possibly being eaten while walking up stairs.

"Day in the life of a hunter." He muttered to himself. Running a hand though his hair he hauled himself up another step. Every time he mounted another he was expecting something to reach out of the dark and try to tear bits off of him and he didn't even have anyone to help.

He hadn't wanted to do this alone.

Steps 15/25

As he continued his climb he could swear he heard things following him. So far he couldn't see anything but that didn't mean anything. Not in a place like this and not to someone like him. Unfortunately it was unlikely to be a cute puppy or kitten

God no. Never kittens. Never again. Once was enough and I NEVER want to do that again. I am going to deny that ever happened if anyone asks. I was on vacation. Away. MIA. Not mewing at doors and pouncing on other balls of fluff.

Shaking those thoughts out of his head he checked his footing again. He poked a small piece of glass with his foot, wincing as it fell off the step and tinkled it's way down until it eventually shattered again. "oops".

Taking another step he noticed, almost at the last second, another large shard and shifted his footing. He almost lost it completely, landing on his elbow on the step above as his foot just missed being sliced open. "I. Hate. Mirrors." He huffed as he pulled himself back up to his feet and whipped his hands off on his coat.

Steps 17/25

It seemed like the higher and higher he went the larger the pieces of glass became. He tried not looking in them, not wanting to end up stuck in some fairy tale with a creepy blond. And that would be the least of his worries about what might be looking back at him. He could remember the pictures of monsters that showed up in the library and the things he'd seen himself. There could be worse just waiting on the other side of a mirror.

Nudging another large piece out of the way he continued up, pace slowing as he hoped he neared the top. The last thing he wanted to do was take a spill up here and end up breaking his neck on the way down. That would be a -really- undignified way to go.

He at least wanted to go out in some sort of glory. Not because he tripped. "Bet Arland would get a kick out of that though. 'Good job Mr Hero. Death by clumsyness'." HE shook his head, smirking for a moment. Hopefully Arland was alright. Wherever he was.

Steps 19/25

Mind lost thinking about his friend he completely missed the creeping darkness that had been following him up the stairs. Figures that the almost death of him was going to be because he was off day dreaming about a pair of pretty eyes.

"s**t!" He felt cold clammy fingers wrap around his leg trying to pull him off his footing. Grabbing one of the steps he shook his leg trying to get away. The stairs below him had disappeared in gloom, the same gloom that had fingers biting into his leg. He could feel the numbing pain of imminence cold and kicked out at the offending hand with his other foot half expecting his shoe to go though the arm and meet no resistance.

When his foot connected with something solid he felt a wave of relief wash over him. Solid meant he could hurt it and thankfully the kick had the fingers retreating and he scrambled up another couple of steps to try to get away from the creeping gloom. His leg was throbbing now though and he could see where the cold had burned into his skin, blood seeping though his pants. That was going to take some serious bandages later.

Steps 25/25

Shaking his foot to try to get some feeling back into it he gritted his teeth and pulled himself up the last step. Leaning over he took a few shuddering breaths before straightening up and looking around.

Mirrors.

"Fuuuck."

His words echoed around him and he winced. Moments later he felt the prickling on his neck of someone watching him and spun around to face empty air. The sensation didn't stop though and as he tried to peer around the room to find out who, or what, was watching him the scratching started.

At first he thought it was just whatever had grabbed him but quickly the broken glass started to dance and the walls began to move. Not wanting Arland's watery punishment to be for nothing he reached down and grabbed a piece of glass. Stuffing it into one of the pockets on his thigh he turned back to scramble down the steps and blunder his way back though the cavern.

"Land!? God where are you...."
