Keep their lands clear of monsters, that was Tauriel's charge. How strictly she followed this ruling laid down by their king varied greatly depending on how many of the men were accompanying her on any given day. She would not disobey their king when her fellows were with her. She would not wish any sort of punishment to fall on them for her decisions. Tauriel also suspected that many of them would stop her before she ever tried to leave their lands for much the same reason. They would not wish to see her punished. She had seen it in their eyes many a time. The worried look when Tauriel watched a kalona or skinwalker flee beyond their reach, her mouth always the same grin line, her eyes always burning with the same anger. Tauriel did not wish to know those looks the way that she did for every time that she witnessed it, it meant that they had failed.
The sun rose, bringing dawn and banishing the stars behind a sea of the brightest colors, fiery reds and blazing pinks and purples. It also brought word to Tauriel that a lone kalona had been seen crossing into their borders before the dawn came. Tauriel was up and alert in an instant. Her long tail swept out behind her as she marched through the tunnel-like maze of trees, past many of her kin enjoying breakfast, heading towards the gate that opened up into the wild woods. Perhaps the guard that had informed her about the kalona had meant for her to wait for others to be assembled when he had rushed out of the interwoven grove of trees that served as Tauriel's personal quarters. Tauriel did not care to wait and find out. If others were to join her then they would come. Tauriel could handle a single kalona on her own and it was not pride that left her thinking that way. It was many years of long practice and hard work. Endless training that had landed her the position of being captain of the guard. She knew how to kill as well as any blood-thirsty beast out there and better than many of them.
Tauriel passed beneath the twin trees that came together at their tops to form a large gate-like passage that separated the kingdom from the rest of the forest and out into the wilds without anyone really paying her much attention. A few had greeted her but her quick, purposeful stride, always managed to keep most of her kin at bay. They recognized the stride of a guard on duty or heading out on patrol and knew better than to interrupt. Tauriel had paid the few that had spoken to her no mind offering only the slightest bow of her head to acknowledge their words. She was entirely focused on the task at hand: find the kalona and get rid of it. It wasn't until she was almost out of earshot that she heard one of the two gatekeepers trying to call her back that she knew for certain that there were others meant to be joining her.
Tauriel hesitated. Waiting for the others would take time and she didn't want to let this one escape in the time it took for them to gather. Elves were very efficient but even efficiency took time and Tauriel didn't want to waste anymore. Pretending that she hadn't heard the gatekeeper Tauriel continued on her way reminding herself that they would catch up but by the time they did she expected to have cornered the beast and slain it.

Yseult's body felt like it had been torn apart and then stitched back together by a blind man. She was certain that the unicorn that she had forced into healing her had done something to her. She didn't feel like she was on the mend, she felt worse than she had before getting help. The membrane in her wing would never heal but the scabs over her body spoke to at least somewhat normal movement being on her horizon. Her eye, however, was lost to the world. There had been no salvaging it. The flutter had stung true and claimed his prize. When Yseult again had the strength for a fight she would find him and kill him. Snap his bones between her jaws and watch him twitch himself, screaming, into oblivion.
The thought of revenge kept her going even though her legs shook with every step. She had run into the thick of the forest and hadn't stopped running except to heal her wounds. Stopping meant the utter surety of death. The mazoku did not take insult and betrayal lightly and she was certain they were looking for her.
She went deeper and deeper into the trees never noticing the eyes on her or the movement further out.

Tauriel found the intruder easily, it was something that had no business being in a forest. The kalona had a pale grey coat, with vibrant aqua colored markings and short choppy hair of a similar color. Tauriel couldn't think of a terrain where such a coat would be useful but the mountains seemed to be as good of a guess as any. It would be more beneficial for a hunter to be able to blend in with their surroundings so they would not be spotted.
Tauriel stood still by a cluster of trees watching the kalona carefully. He own russet coat allowing her to disappear into the scenery easily. The mare hadn't seemed to notice her yet. Tauriel had her coat and the knowledge to stay downwind to thank for that. The kalona would have to look about cautiously to spot Tauriel but she didn't seem to have any intention of doing so. Instead the mare took step after step and Tauriel couldn't help but notice that her movements were stiff and heavy like she hadn't rested in days.
It would be easy to do away with her.
Tauriel slowly shifted away from the trees placing each step carefully and swiftly to avoid making sounds. Then, with the ease of long practice, Tauriel charged. Her hooves made far less sound than they should have and in an instant she had reached the mare. She dipped her head then brought it back up quickly in a sweeping movement to swipe at the mare's throat with her horn.

Yseult became aware that she was not alone a few seconds too late to move out of the way. She managed a half step backwards before the slicing sensation hit the side of her neck and stopped just over her jaw. Again, Yseult found herself bleeding. Yseult snarled and spun herself around to whip her spaded tail out hoping to slice her assailant. She moved so quickly to counter that she didn't see more than a blur of brown. Yseult wasn't an expert on mazoku but she didn't know any in that order that came in such a dull color. Had they called someone else in or was this a different creature all together?
Yseult decided against sticking around to find out. Using the space she created with her counter to her advantage Yseult charged away in the other direction. Whoever it was they were trying to kill her and Yseult didn't have the strength to do battle just yet. She could barely run. Her feet were sluggish and clumsy as she fled through the woods. She just needed to get away, which would have been much easier if her wings weren't ruined.

It hadn't been the cleanest it but it had still been a hit. As the kalona turned Tauriel had bounded away cleanly avoiding the sweeping tail as though it were no more difficult than a structured dance. The fighting back she had been expecting but what left her standing still was the fact that the kalona was running, or what looked to be some attempt at running. Tauriel glanced over her shoulder expecting to see the rest of the guard running her way. There was nothing but trees to be seen.
Tauriel turned back to her quarry and noticed that the female kalona as quickly making her was back towards the boarder. Tauriel's face hardened, that would not be allowed to happen. Moving with ease over the roots and sodden patches of ground that covered the forest floor Tauriel raced towards the mare again. The others had not come yet but that did not mean that they weren't approaching. Tauriel needed to finish this before the kalona got any further. Her steps might have been sluggish when compared to Tauriel's own she was in no way slow. Tauriel had maybe ten minutes to block her path before she ran the risk of being called back.
This mare seemed to have come in and then started to walk along the edge of the boarder if Tauriel's information was correct. The path there was easier to see with as often as it was patrolled. Perhaps the mare's awkward gait was the reason for it, she merely wanted an easier trail. Unfortunately she had picked a trail in a place that monsters had no business being in. She would not be allowed to see the other side of the trail again.
