The stage was where Paris felt most comfortable.

On it, in back of it, preparing for it, it was the one area of Paris's life where she knew exactly what she could and could not handle (and she knew she could handle quite a bit). It was where she was most confident, where she felt she could most effectively show people who she was, what she had to offer (the city, the world, the audience, herself, she wasn't really sure which applied most). She had been intimately familiar with it from a young age; it was everything in her life, every moment, condescend down into a single area.

It was joy, sadness, anger, and loss; it was a friend, a mentor, a lover, a rival, an enemy. It was everything that she knew and everything she still had yet to learn; it as her past, her present, and (hopefully) her future.

Social functions, on the other hand, she was a bit under-prepared for. Paris was sociable by nature, but had not yet managed to master the fine art of mingling with people whose support, or lack thereof, could so drastically effect the success or failure of an evening. Charity functions, fund-raising events, they were things she believed strongly in when they promoted the things she held close to her heart, but they were not areas of her life she felt she was achieving the most success in.

For the time being it was less stressful to stay backstage and chat with the other dancers, or watch her peers perform, comfortable as she was in the tights and blue peasant costume she'd worn for her Giselle variation less than a half hour ago. It was there she even thought she'd spotted a familiar face—another dancer, of course, but one she had not seen in quite some time.

But then though their paths had occasionally crossed, they'd both been focused on different disciplines, along with the fact that, to her, Hillworth was a memory she chose not to revisit often.

“Colin?” she said, when she could find an opportunity to steal a moment.

Unlike Paris, Colin was fairly comfortable even off the stage, though he too felt most at home, most comfortable, being there as well. It was one of the few areas in his life where he didn't try over-reaching himself because his unshakable confidence in his skills was quite honestly warranted. He and Paris were very similar when it came to the way dancing had been - and still was - a major part of their lives and despite the fact that they had focused on different disciplines they had crossed paths from time to time.

Or at least often enough to recognize each other pretty well on sight.

Colin would have gone out to mingle with those people whose aid they had all performed so eloquently to obtain, but he wanted to at least pull on a pair of proper slacks; charity functions were absolutely worth while and he fully supported functions of all types - especially ones that helped to spread his love of dance. Also, if he performed (or was that more like when?) he got to stay and see some pretty awesome people, fellow dancers or otherwise.

He was taking a pull from one of those Earth-friendly reusable water bottles when Paris came up to talk to him. Colin turned his head towards the questioning voice and then smiled broadly when he recognized the speaker.

"Paris? I thought that was you!" Colin being Colin, the blond immediately closed the still-open water bottle and then moved to give Paris a big hug in greeting, talking over her shoulder while his arms were around her. "Wow, I haven't seen you since...god, graduation. How've you been?"

So the other dancer was in drag, so what. Paris had a finely boned face and had always been even more feminine than Colin was (though he now had a more masculine look, enough make-up could have fooled an audience); that being said, he himself had ended up dancing in female-garb from time to time. That didn't cause him to bat an eye. What did give him reason to pause was that while he was hugging Paris, he could have sworn he felt breasts. Small, but...breasts.

When he pulled away finally, he couldn't help the thoughtful half-frown on his face. Even when he danced a girl's part, he didn't pad his chest. They just created the illusion of cleavage...but hugging Paris, there had definitely been some "extra" padding...kind of like hugging his little sister.

"Um, Paris...maybe I'm crazy, but..." Colin kind of gestured at her top, not quite sure what to say...as far as he could recall, Paris hadn't had boobs.

Paris cheerfully accepted the hug and returned it enthusiastically. Though they'd always been more like casual acquaintances than anything, it made Paris happy to see Colin again, and to see him doing well.

“Oh, I don't know if it was graduation,” she said, and made an effort to look a bit rueful when the thought itself was amusing to her. “Do people even graduate from Hillworth?” she joked. “Just kidding, I'm sure some people do. I didn't, but... long story. Actually, it's really not that long at all, but now's not the time or place for sad things. Either way, it's been since about then, I think, so close enough!”

She smiled broadly when they separated and did not seem the least bit embarrassed about the attention being paid to her chest. If anything she looked quite pleased. Though she lifted her arms as if she might make attempts to shield herself with them folded over her chest, it ended up looking more like she was attempting to give her small, developing breasts a boost.

Normally the subjects of her body as well as some of the recent changes in her life were things she found difficult to discuss with people; she could never find the right words to adequately explain herself. But the better she felt about herself, the easier she thought it was to explain.

“I'm on hormones,” she said. “Since about last July. In the end, I should have been sent to St. Mag's instead of Hillworth, which was probably obvious to a lot of people at the time, but... you know, I guess I just had a hard time figuring things out, or... didn't want to worry about it when there were tons of other things going on. Anyway, I'm Mrs. Paris Gallo now. I'd show you my ring if I wore it on stage, but it's kinda showy, so...” she concluded. “What have you been up to? It's weird not seeing you around, but I also haven't been doing much of the professional thing for the last year and a half, so maybe we've just been missing each other.”

Her expression while recalling Hillworth was interesting and a bit odd to Colin - sure, Hillworth had sucked, big time, but it hadn't been quite as bad as say, military camp? But if he thought about it further, it was easy to remember just how unhappy he'd been before Björn had entered his life...and how difficult it had been to date someone when it was totally against the rules.

"Well, my boy friend and I did, but now that you mention it..." He hadn't seen Paris at the graduation ceremony (small as it was)...as a matter of fact, Colin couldn't remember when he had last seen Paris at Hillworth. "Oh, uh..I'm sorry to hear that. But you didn't miss much, trust me."

Paris seemed really pleased that he'd noticed and even, perhaps on accident, seemed to give them a little boost, which made his confused expression turn into a slightly-pink cheeked chuckle. After she explained, his smile got even brighter - he was truly happy that she was happy and had a good life. "Wow. Congratulations Paris, on..everything, really. You look amazing, too. Man, I can't believe your married! Okay, actually I can, but it seems so weird, knowing a married person my age." With a shake of his head and a happy chuckle he winked at her, "Your husband's a lucky guy, I hope he knows it.."

Colin's compliments were honest, though they had never been more than acquaintances, he'd always liked what he knew of/about Paris and he definitely respected her skills.

"Oh um, actually I've been out of the country for a little over a year, so you wouldn't have seen me. I pretty much just got back from Battlesea, London. I was attending the Royal Academy of Dance...they'd invited me to attend their graded Vocational classes, get some master instruction, some polish, you know? It was absolutely an amazing experience and I'm so lucky and happy to have attended, even if I missed everyone here." Especially Björn, though he didn't say that aloud.

Paris accepted the compliments and praise with the grace of one who feasted on positive energy—which was to say that she ate it right up, her smile broadening in a way that might make it seem as if the comments were going straight to an overly bloated head.

And in a way they were. Certainly her head had been a bit bloated before (figuratively speaking, of course), and though the size of it might have decreased over the years when her confidence took a fall, it was being steadily refilled and patched up. Compliments were like candy, particularly those that were both genuine and in relation to what she thought was a truer expression of who she was.

“Oh, I'm just as lucky as he is, trust me,” she said, and though it was true enough in many ways it likely sounded as if she were making a failed attempt at modesty.

“Oh my God, I'm so jealous,” Paris gushed. She didn't look it. If anything she looked excited by the idea and pleased to know that Colin had been doing well for himself. “Seriously, what's there to miss here? God, I would kill to be able to do that. Okay, maybe not kill but, you know, I would do just about anything else. And here I've just been stuck in Destiny City. It's just been the Destiny City Ballet for me. Except then I decided to take some time off to do the college thing, but if I had the chance to go somewhere else...”

The thought remained incomplete. The fact of the matter was that she had the chance to go pretty much anywhere she wanted. She could go to London, or Paris, or New York, but she chose to remain in Destiny City out of duty, out of a sense of obligation. This was where her family was, this was where her friends remained, this was where the war continued on without end.

Until that was settled, she didn't think she'd ever be able to leave.

“That is so cool, it must have been so amazing. What are you thinking of doing now? Coming back here must seem pretty surreal after that!”

Even if he'd known that his compliments would only fed Paris' ego, Colin wouldn't have held them back. He just wasn't that sort of fellow - he'd been told he was either too honest or too blunt for most of his life (among other things that he'd been/was "too much" of..like girly).

"Of course you'd say that, he's your husband." Another laugh from the green-eyed dancer; Paris' tone might have been a little bit off for the humble picture painted by her words, but Colin had always been fairly simplistic with things like that. He didn't always catch the finer nuances of tone and pitch when it came to talking with people - they were just so much harder to read than music!

"It was really amazing and I've got a bunch of notes and video footage and stuff, techniques...critiques from the instructors and things like that." He ran one hand through his short hair, mussing the curls so some of them stood up where they shouldn't. "If you wanted sometime, I'd be happy to show you?"

"And you could go...the Summer Vocational is supposed to be really good for the cost. I couldn't tell you, but they've got a website...you could check it out. If your husband'll let you go, that is." Not meaning let her go, but rather would he want to send Paris so far away that he wouldn't be able to see, touch and hold her. "And they've supposedly got accredited schools all over the place, so there may be one closer. But Battlesea was so amazing, you should go to London if you can."

What was he thinking of doing? Lord, wasn't that the question? "Well, my old studio's offered me a teaching position, but I'd rather dance than teach dance. I've got a couple companies interested in having me come on...some from Destiny City, some outside it." Colin pulled a headband out of his back pocket when adjusting his curls a few more times didn't work; the headband might have looked silly sometimes, but at least the damned thing kept his hair out of his eyes!

"The ballet has offered to let me audition too, so if I join up, I'll expect you to show me the ropes." His tone was light, teasing; she was classical ballet (mostly) and he was more of a...contemporary guy. But that didn't mean that if he joined the DC Ballet Company that they wouldn't end up performing together.

"Extremely. Plus, now I"m back living at home, which is really weird...my sister's grown boobs and talking about prom and making out and...everything I don't want to hear about from my baby sis." Colin made a face of extreme distaste; he loved Miriam, but he didn't want to hear about her first period, cramps, how she needed a new bra, what boy she was kissing....any of it. Ick.

“Oh, I couldn't leave even if I wanted to,” Paris said. She waved her hands as if the idea itself was silly, and smiled like it didn't bother her to have to turn down so many amazing opportunities. “Maybe one day, but... my entire family's here, and... my husband's a baseball player. He's... I mean, I guess it's never a guarantee that the major leagues'll happen, but he's been heavily scouted and it's what he's always wanted to do, and I'd rather be around to support him wherever he ends up, so... there might be other opportunities for me later on, but for now I'm pretty satisfied right where I'm at, I think.”

She felt a little guilty making it seem as if such serious life decisions revolved entirely around Chris when there was far more to it than that, but it was the easiest card she had to play to explain her circumstances without getting into the finer details of a war she liked to pretend she was blissfully ignorant of.

And in some ways she was satisfied, even if she hadn't taken advantage of the opportunities someone else in her position might have jumped for gleefully. She'd come a long way from that little toddler taking beginner ballet classes at the community center, and she'd accomplished more in the short professional career that had preceded her admittance into college than she'd thought she would in her early teens. Even if she wasn't going places, she was still getting somewhere. She still had plenty going for her even if most of it was centered in Destiny City.

Besides, aside from the war, Destiny City wasn't such a bad place on a normal, uneventful day. She had a lot of be proud of here, and appreciated what had become of her life far more than she might have had things turned out differently.

“I'd like to see all that video footage sometime, though. If I can't do it myself I might as well live vicariously through someone who has. But DCB's great. Honestly. It was intense but so fun and I made a lot of friends while I was there and I'm really happy to be going back later this year. You should give it a shot. It'd be nice to have another familiar face around,” she said. “Plus it's not a bad place to be if you plan on staying in Destiny City, and with all that fancy-pants training under your belt I'll expect you to keep up,” she joked.

Paris laughed lightly and tried to seem happy. She was. Maybe she hadn't been for a while before, but things were different now; parts of her life had vastly improved and she was enjoying what experiences she could get. She was... comfortable. She had a good life, and if there was anything she still felt she was missing out of it, that just gave her one more reason to keep working hard and look forward to the future.

“Even if it's weird, it must be nice being back. I know I'd miss my family if I went away,” she observed, her voice growing a touch sad and wistful. “And my husband probably wouldn't manage too well without me. He's so helpless.”

He listened with interest but at the back of his mind was the thought that if her husband were scouted for the Major Leagues, she could just as easily take that time to head off to one of the RAD accredited places at the same time. Sure, the main campus was in Battlesea...but there were several other centers that could give one a similar education! Currently there wasn't one available in Destiny City (or he probably would have stayed locally and attended it instead of leaving his friends, family and lover behind) but who knew if there would - or wouldn't - be one in the future?

"Well, maybe they'll get a satellite location here sometime? There are quite a few good schools here...it'd be nice too. Then people like us wouldn't have to travel so far!" He chuckled a little and then picked idly at his sleeve, "Baseball, huh? I played in Little League for like..a week. I quit 'cause it interfered with dance rehearsals." Paris was so clearly in love it should have rotted his teeth...but it was sweet and he could almost see the sparkles and bubbles around the young woman when she spoke. "I understand. It's really hard to leave someone you love behind for that long..." When you came back, they were apt to be a whole new person - rediscovery was fun, but there were times when he almost wished he hadn't gone. Almost.

"Oh, absolutely. You know, you're good enough now you'll probably be able to critique 'em as well as my instructors. And the harder stuff..." He shrugged a little bit, smiling still, "I'd be happy to practice with you sometime, show you what I learned?" That is, supposing that Colin had learned anything that Paris didn't already know...or have a grasp on. "I'll take your word on it and give it some more consideration...it'd be awesome if I got to work in with a good company and knew some of the people first, instead of being thrown in with the wolves."

The world of Dance could be amazingly dog-eat-dog...even among friends. "Oh, I'll keep up, alright. You just be ready for me!" He took a moment while she was talking, her voice tinged with wistful sadness, to snag another water bottle. Water was so much better for you than the stuff the people on the other side of the stage were drinking!

"It's wonderful being back..though I have to admit, if I were as happily married as you seem to be, I don't know that I could've gone. It was hard enough leaving my boyfriend behind as it was. Actually, we broke up before I left, 'cause I didn't want to hold him back."

It was easy to make a seamless transition from talking about dance and potential opportunities to discussing things she didn't have to make too many excuses for—like her husband—when Colin left such an easy opening to cast dance-talk aside. As much as Paris enjoyed such discussions, particularly with people who could actually understand, she felt as if any more excuses or lame explanations would do more harm than good.

Best to leave it there. The more excuses she made the more likely she'd be to give herself away.

“Yeah, my dad used to try and get me to play ball but obviously that wasn't very successful,” Paris commiserated, latching onto the topic of Chris and significant others like she expected it to propel her out of a potentially awkward conversation, though things had gone well so far.

“But Chris's been doing it since he was little and he's pretty good. Has an excellent curveball. Throws upwards of 95,” she said. “If you're staying in town you'll probably meet him someday. He comes to watch when he has the time. Couldn't come tonight, though. He's got a game. Our schedules don't always work out, but it's kinda nice, in a way. We're not always in each others' hair. Got our own things to do. Otherwise we'd probably get sick of each other,” she joked.

In reality she doubted she'd ever get sick of Chris. That sentiment was probably fairly obvious in the look on her face. Sparkles and bubbles, indeed. A younger Paris would have been absolutely revolted by the display.

“A boyfriend, huh?” Paris continued. That was a safe topic, she thought—at least for her. “You seen him at all since you got back? See, I don't think I would have been able to do that. I mean, yeah, Chris and I have our own lives, but I don't know that I could have been so far away from him for so long. What's your boy like?”

"Oh wow. I admit, I know very little about baseball, but even I know that 95 is damned good." Colin could admit when he didn't know something, just like he could appreciate when someone else was - and Paris' man definitely sounded like he was quite the ball player. Maybe he would have been more interested in sports if he'd been slightly less interested in dancing (or keeping his head on his shoulders, since bullies loved skinny boys that looked too pretty to be boys and danced).

"I'd love to meet the guy that snagged you up." Colin chuckled a little at the way she spoke of Chris, of how their schedules slipped in and out of sync. "Uh huh, suuure you would. I don't believe it for a second my friend. You've still got that..honey-moon glow going."

"Don't worry about it, I'm the same way with Björn...and we're just." He fluttered one hand expansively; they weren't married - they weren't even engaged - maybe their relationship would never get to that level, but it didn't matter because as of that moment he was head-over-heels about the guy.

After taking a sip of water he continued on, answering some of her questions. "Yeah. He was my roommate at Hillworth...I dunno if you ever saw him. Big guy, built like a tank, long blond braid, accent...terrible at math?" Colin's expression was bright and open - maybe some of those sparkles and bubbles that surrounded Paris switched to join him as he talked about Björn.

"Kept dating for a bit after graduation...but like I said, I didn't want to hold him back with a long-distance relationship. He's really an amazing guy, but he's pretty physical...he's a strong-man. Or training to be one."

"It was really hard leaving him behind, I don't think I'll ever do that again. We've gotten together a time or two so far, but mostly it's been us talking on the phone." Of course, that was something he was going to change, as soon as he could manage it - especially since his mother had been gently hinting that she wanted to turn his old room into an office and Björn had mentioned his apartment having plenty of room.

The honey-moon glow was indeed still going strong in Paris. She liked to think the marriage hadn't changed much about their relationship at all. After all, it was just a silly ceremony and a piece of paper with some legal rights tied into it. It didn't have to make their relationship any different than it'd been before. Certainly it didn't change the way they felt about one another.

But it'd brought changes regardless, less between she and Chris and more in Paris herself. She felt secure, content, comfortable with herself. Chris had obviously been a good influence on her, whether or not he was solely responsible for the changes. She was happy, despite what disasters and tragedies still marred her life.

As Colin described his boyfriend, Paris thought back to what students she remembered seeing in the halls. Based on the descriptions (and with a name like Björn) one would think she'd remember him easily, but mentally filing through what faces she knew didn't immediately bring up one that was at all recognizable. But then she'd never excelled at putting names and faces together the way she knew she should.

“He sounds kind of familiar,” she noted, but her expression fell to mild confusion. She'd not hung out with the best of crowds during her high school years and had spent more time causing trouble and defying the staff in whatever way she could to pay too much attention to her fellow students. She wasn't entirely fond of her memories of Hillworth, in any case. Attending could probably be classified as one of the worst periods in her life.

“But roommates, huh?” she winked suggestively. “Talk about a convenient arrangement. Well, at least you've gotten the whole living together thing out of the way, though I'm not sure how much a dorm-room really counts. How 'bout I let you meet Chris and you let me meet Björn?” she grinned. “Ooo, like a double date or something! Or we can pretend at being grown-ups and have a totally bougie dinner party. I probably should start inviting friends over to the house now that most of the important areas are renovated. If anything, being married has made me a bit of a shut-in if I'm not at school or in the studio.”

They might not have been friends during their time at Hillworth, but Colin thought they could easily become so now, but even if they didn't he was genuinely happy to see another person like that. Happy. Fulfilled. In love.

"I don't know why I didn't think of it, I've got a ton of pictures of him on my phone. One sec..." Colin shoved his securely capped water bottle under one arm and fished his smart-phone out so he could show Paris his bear of a boy-friend. There were a few that had both Colin and Björn in them, but mostly the snaps were of the tall blond working out or looking at the camera with a big, open smile. Except for the ones that were clearly from a Christmas celebration which were decidedly festive and included Colin's mom and little sister.

"Yeah." He chuckled and shook his head a little - being roommates at Hillworth had made things both easier and more complicated since it was totally against the rules to 'fraternize'. "I don't know about convenient, it wasn't always easy to keep from getting caught." Colin grinned and winked back, he was pretty shameless when it came to Björn and had been pretty early on. "It's a little different I think, but we'd be okay. I mean, he's really easy going...just have to make sure the furniture's sturdy enough to hold him."

Which is why they'd gotten rid of Björn's Hillworth provided bed frame right off and shoved the mattress and box spring on the floor. Colin's bed had ended up being more of a couch, a place where he did his homework or lay out clothing than somewhere anyone slept.

"That's-- That'd be awesome. I wanna meet your guy and you've definitely got to meet Björn!" It was a great idea! Not the double-date thing so much, since they had to be really careful when planning stuff like that 'cause Björn was so damned big most places just weren't comfortable for him to be. "Double-dates are fun, but he's huge and doesn't fit most places. He was six-five in school and he's bigger now." Six-foot-seven, to be precise.

But dinner? That totally could work, so long as Chris and Paris had sturdy furniture, so he perked happily at the thought. "Haha, oh god, we would be pretending, wouldn't we?" Not in a bad way, they were just young yet. "If you think your furniture can take it, I'd love to do dinner sometime. Oh, but I'm a vegetarian, no meat. I do eggs, milk and cheese as long as the animals are treated humanely. He'll eat just about anything."

"I've even gotten him eating tofu." At Paris saying she had become something of a shut in Colin put a hand on her shoulder and looked at her seriously. "Okay, nope. Not okay. You're too pretty to be a shut-in, so when I get the whole..living arrangement thing settled? We're gonna go out and do something. I mean it. What's your number?" It would go in his phone, yep, along with a quick snap of Paris' face for the little icon.

Paris inched closer to be able to get a better look at Colin's phone. The pictures triggered a mild sense of recognition.

“Oooh, yeah, I think I remember at least seeing him around. I don't think we ever talked, though. Wow, he's cute.”

If “cute” could really be used to describe such a large person as Björn seemed to be. “Cute” was more appropriate for people like Colin. Björn, on the other hand, could only be described as “massive.” Even in the pictures there was an air of largeness about him. Paris imagined he would tower over her, a mental image which was soon verified when Colin provided his height while in school. He had to be more than twice her weight—which wasn't entirely surprising given how small and thin she was, but for the longest time Chris, his older brother, and his father had been the only people in her life to truly make her feel small.

She smiled at Colin and said, “Okay, so maybe not cute so much as gigantic, but he's very attractive. He seems like a gentle giant.”

Hastily Paris pulled out her own phone, which she'd retrieved soon after she'd exited the stage, bringing up quite a number of pictures of Chris to flick through.

“This is Chris,” she said, showing Colin the images of a tall, athletic looking young man with shaggy, dark auburn hair and the prettiest golden eyes she'd ever seen. Many of the pictures were of the two of them together, but she had a few of Chris working out, and quite a number of him out on the baseball diamond, pitching from the mound. “He's such a sweetie, I love him so much.”

Happily she provided Colin with her phone number, already making dinner plans in her head. She just needed to figure out when they were all free. She knew how hard coordinating schedules could be.

“Okay, then you will take me out to do something fun, and I will plan us a nice dinner which will probably not be easy considering our schedules don't always mach up with Chris's, plus I'd have to take Björn's into account too, but I'm determined. This is a thing that is going to happen one day.”
