He likes things.
Lots of things.
He is a hoarder, whether this means material things such as items or larger things, such as people and plagues (though the latter is to a much lesser extent). He is possessive of what he deems to be his, though not in a violent way; Adfaer is mainly passive in his arguments, preferring to remain silent or speak fiercely than act out physically. There is never any rhyme or reason to the things that he chooses to like; a scattered pile of various objects picked because he likes the color of one thing or the texture of another. They are all placed with deliberate care in his place of residence; a clear sign of his strange obsession with them.
It is unclear whether Adfaer gets along well with Raffin; their relationship is peculiar, to say the least, as Raffin sees Adfaer less as a partner or family member and more of a test subject, a curiosity for him to study at length. Adfaer in turn is not reliant on Raffin, and is quite independent, preferring to come and go as he pleases and do what it is that he is drawn to do.
He is not particularly well-mannered; or at least, he shows no signs of ever having been taught proper manners, though Raffin will say that he did his best. Adfaer is not ignorant, but he is decidedly uncaring of the ways of most humans and disregards a great deal of what he deems to be useless social mores. He is bluntly truthful, almost brutally honest, and when he speaks, the words are usually short and gruff and small; straight to the point, without preamble or unnecessary embellishment. Where Raffin is eloquent and engaging, Adfaer is silent and brooding; a proud sort that prefers to keep to the darkness rather than be exposed to the light. He shares the same tolerance and passion for observation of humans that his Grimm does, though for different reasons. Raffin is scientific, full of theories and postulations about why a person does one thing or another; Adfaer is merely curious, unabashedly so. Humans, to Adfaer, are not a thing to be studied, but a thing to be used, a thing to be collected.
He is particularly black and white about certain things; when he believes his point of view to be right, there is little to be done that can persuade him from this. Adfaer is proud and feels entirely justified in assuming that he is correct while everyone else is wrong; to admit a mistake would be showing weakness, something he dislikes immensely. It is this aspect of him that tends to bring out the most of his aggression; being disregarded or assumed to be mistaken about something will make him quite angry, as he feels he has earned the right to be heard.

Name: Raffin Merteberge. Age: 28 years old. Faction: The Council of Sciences Region: Born and raised in Panymium.
Personality: Gregarious, cheerful, and calm. Raffin enjoys the company of others, finds conversing with people to be an interesting and fulfilling way of spending his time. There are always things to be learned about others, he has said, from casual observation to intricate details about their mannerisms and habits. Often times he will go out of his way to observe something or someone; people fascinate him, as do their lives. This also includes a fondess for social gatherings, especially ones that involve any displays of art, whether theater, a person or persons declaiming, dances, or actual art, Raffin can usually be found attending any and all such occasions. In his spare time he is an avid reader, though he has also been known to pen a few poems here and now (though he says he is embarrassed and mostly keeps these to himself).
Rational and loyal. He is a loyal sort; he finds comfort in ruts, in understanding his place and staying there, whether it is beside a person, in a particular occupation, or in an area of social standing. Raffin derives no pleasure in doing things he does not wish to, nor does he find it an apt use of his time; he would much rather stay where it is comfortable and where he can garner the most out of his situations. If the situation calls for it, however, he will find a way to accomplish what is asked of him, because failure is not something that he takes lightly. If he does not like or does not approve of what he is doing, most likely he will try and do it anyway merely so that he can say that he didn't fail at it.
Obsessive and impatient. He can become fixated on a single thing, whether it's a case file of a person he is studying or doctoring, or an experiment gone right or wrong, or even just something he's read that he finds interesting. Raffin is not violent, but when confronted with something such as the previous examples, he can become impatient for results or for answers, oftentimes doing what he can to speed up whatever process their is. He gets annoyed and rather sullen when things are not going as they should, and often lets this leech out into his everyday life. Raffin's most basic desire is to study the minds and thoughts and behaviors of Plagues further, especially in relation to humans; but in order to do that, he has to understand his own Plague first, and the fact that he still has yet to learn as much as he wants about Adfaer frustrates Raffin.
Stubborn, selfish, and prideful. There is a streak of stubbornness in him, as well as a pride that he holds dearly. He may not be high on the social chain, but what he does have he takes quite seriously, and is very proud of his accomplishments. This pride, however, can be a hindrance; it sometimes blinds him to the proper reasoning, and instead of being logical about a situation, he can become obsessive. It confuses his thoughts, makes it more difficult for him to come to a rational solution about something. Raffin's interests in scientific inquiry and the study of medicine, as well as humans and their habits, has become his life's work. He is oftentimes unable to separate himself from mental note taking, and will overly analyze things to death even when there is nothing left to analyze.
Appearance: (Quick and terrible sketch that is not entirely accurate.) Strawberry blonde hair, wavy and shoulder length; always pulled back into a neat ponytail at the base of his neck. Pale green eyes, a narrow face, and a long, lean body built more for evading than attacking. Rounded shoulders, evident of a great deal of leaning over, are an indication that he spends much of his time standing or sitting at a desk or a table. He dresses well, but comfortably, without any of the frivolities associated with high class clothing.
History: First it was about why his family seemed to have expanded in size, first from a humble home of three to a vast and cluttered house of seven, all within a few years' time. Raffin spent the first six years of his life being his parents' only child, a position he felt quite pleased with. In the year that Raffin turned seven, however, it became apparent that his mother was once again pregnant, and gave birth to twin girls, followed by another boy a year and a half later. Still, their home was pleasant and affectionate, with doting parents, even if their house was modest in size and lacked a great deal of the proper necessities, such as beds for all of them Raffin shared with his brother, their sisters with each other).
He attended the local Panymisian school and learned quite fast for a child his age, though his teachers often complained of his "dreamlike attitude." Several times he was caught staring into space just thinking, or staring around the classroom at the other students as though studying them, a curious expression on his face. It became apparent that Raffin's apparent "daydreaming" was merely an effort to see the reasoning behind his family's lifestyle versus the lives of the other children in class. The question that most exasperated his instructors was one simple word: Why?
"Why do Billy and Margrete act as though they dislike each other and then hold hands during mealtimes?"
"Why is Miss Lydia wearing such a dowdy black outfit all of the time?"
"Why does one thing happen to a singular person, but not another?"
Raffin's desire to know and understand the mysteries of human nature only became larger and more pronounced as he grew older. He left the house at eighteen believing that he had learned all he could about his family, and in order to study elsewhere, greedily and passionately delving into books and theories and papers and essays and anything else he could stand to get his hands on.
After his departure from school, he was fortunate enough to become the assistant to one of the workers for the Council, a job he found fascinating and tedious all the same, since it involved a great deal of rearranging texts. Still, it was during this time that he truly began to feel that Trisica was the place to go, and so applied for a scholarship at the first chance he could. Amory found him when he was in his early twenties, and it was then that Raffin was encouraged to take classes furthering his thirst for knowledge and explanation
Since then, Raffin has delved deeper into the realm of psychology within Panymium; though since it is not considered to be a recognized field at Trisica, he has made his "official" focus of study to be Philosophy, seeing as how he finds the two often intersect.

He found it in an alley.
It was possible that Raffin could have just walked past the thing in particular, especially considering that by all standards, at first glance it just looked like a pile of tangled, knotted rope to be tossed in the fire. He'd been passing through on his way home when he'd first caught sight of it, and it had been disregarded quite quickly.
At least until he'd tripped.
It was embarrassing, really (Raffin usually leaves this part out when transcribing notes on the encounter). The toe of one boot had gotten stuck on the ground, whereupon he soon found himself face down on the rather dirty ground, coughing dust and stinking of rat and sewer water, neither of which was really a pleasant smell. When he turned his head sideways, he saw that the "knotted rope" was, strangely, a series of entangled rats.
This in and of itself was enough to fascinate Raffin, who spent most of his time studying and had never seen such a thing in all his life. Instead of being concerned about the nature of health and sanitation, (an oversight) he gathered up the unusual object and took it home with him to examine it further.
On occassion, Raffin pushed the object aside once more to focus on much more pressing matters, people he could study and learn from. He didn't notice the toxic black slowly seeping outwards from it until some days later, when the room began to smell fouler than the already-noxious fumes generated from Raffin's various experiments with scientific theory. Needless to say, he found the black substance quite fascinating, and since it resisted all attempts at removal, it became even more curious to him.
Most of Adfaer's Excito life was spent under constant scrutiny.
Raffin, for the most part, became obsessed with discovering the underlying causes for such a state, wishing to learn everything he could about the thing that had once been merely an entanglement of rats. Though Adfaer lived and breathed, he was not considered to be a living organism, at least not to Raffin, who saw it as something of a mystery to study. It intrigued him, fascinated him, and Adfaer received an endless amount of questions, to which he rarely replied with helpful or intellectual answers.
As Raffin's interest grew in Adfaer, Adfaer's interest grew in other things. He disliked the constant scrutiny, believing himself to be above such meaningless trivialities, and slowly little rebellions began to happen; refusals to cooperate with Raffin, lapses into silences that lasted for days on end.
He wasn't there for the change, but he was there for the catalyst that caused it in the first place. Raffin's inability to separate himself mentally - his simultaneous desire to see inside of Adfaer's mind and understand his mentality meant that Raffin pushed a little too far; he disregarded Adfaer as nothing more than a being that had never meant to be. This was a gross insult to Adfaer who, tired of the constant scrutiny, erupted one day, lashing out at Raffin. Considering his small stature as an Excito, this was only barely a scratch, but it at least helped to bring things int perspective a little. Raffin slowly began to realize that his curious little subject perhaps did have a life within them, and he in turn took a few steps back, leaving Adfaer to fend for himself for a few days.
The damage, however, had been done. Adfaer had already separated himself from his Grimm, at least mentally, and when Raffin returned to check on him, it was with some wariness. It wasn't until later that evening that things became much more complicated; Adfaer and Raffin argued, each one unwilling to let go of their own points of view, and at the height of their anger with each other, there began a change in the Plague. Adfaer grew that evening, grew much larger than Raffin had anticipated, much more than a creature almost able to be considered small.
Raffin, simultaneously horrified and awed, was left to wonder whether or not this was a good thing. He had not ever considered Adfaer to be harmless, exactly, but now the word seemed almost ludicrous when looking at this new being that had once been a cluster of rats tied together by their tails. Most of Raffin's anger dissipated, but Adfaer's pride was did not break, and it was Raffin that was forced to back down from this fight, let go of his own pride.
Raffin still continues to examine Adfaer, but it is with more caution now, as Adfaer has grown into himself; a monstrous twist of the much smaller object once found within an alleyway quite by mistake. Neither one of them really trusts the other, but there is a certain sense of balance between them; an unspoken, mutual agreement. In exchange for his freedom, Adfaer will continue to allow Raffin to study him.
