Name: Artemis
Apollo :ǝɯɐN
Gender: Female
Male :ɹǝpuǝפ
Age: 19 :ǝƃ∀
Appearance : ǝɔuɐɹɐǝdd∀
These two are identical when in a natural, unchanged state. Small and slim, dainty and cute, they are pale with even freckles that are difficult to tell apart. Dark brown, wavy hair cascades down to the bottoms of their shoulder blades, and their eyes are a big, chocolate brown that brings to mind legends of selkies. Their own mother still can't tell them apart.
Most of the time, they are kind enough to have one dress as female, and the other male, though they shan't tell you who is who regardless, and naturally everyone assumes that Artemis is the one in a dress with her hair pinned atop her head, and Apollo is the one with his hair in a ribboned tail, wearing the breeches and cravat.
Their mannerisms mirror each other frequently, even when they aren't in the same room. They finish each other's sentences, or answer each other's unspoken question aloud. They walk the same, talk in the same middling, slightly husky voice. Whatever skills one knows, the other knows as well, so it is impossible to tell if one has taken the place of the other.
Personality : ʎʇᴉlɐuosɹǝԀ
Where looks are identical, their personalities are the one aspect that have any variation. Their public personas have been carefully groomed since they were young to tell them apart, but all the twins did was learn both roles.
The public Artemis role is one of feminine grace and vast accomplishment. She is skilled in painting, drawing, dancing, singing and piano, embroidery, crochet and knitting, and design. She has a passion for reading of all sorts. She rides well, and can bow hunt, is charitable and understanding, a friend to all without being close to any girl in particular, and can run a household with care and competence. Though she is a little more fond of the outdoors than some, she never seems to be more masculine than feminine. She and her husband were both a love match, and a marriage of convenience, her family rich and his poor but influential.
Apollo in the public eye is the very picture of youthful exuberance and boyish charm. His small stature makes him a kind of mascot among his peers, well-loved and not considered much in the way of competition for ladies. He is a fine and skilled hunter, a poor gambler, and an enthusiastic team member in any sport, which makes him popular. He is surprisingly good at fencing, being a quick opponent, hard to catch, and with skill in scoring fast. He is mischievous, fond of playing harmless pranks on anyone. Most eligible ladies consider him a younger brother than a prospect, and he likes it that way. He seems firmly attached to his twin with no intention of ever moving out of her and her husband's house.
But these differences are completely useless in telling them apart for anyone close enough to know them well. Their secret is that they switch roles randomly. Each knows the same skills as the other. Even their fencing styles are the same. The only person to ever be able to tell them apart all the time is Artemis' husband, Ashleigh.
In private, the twins behave more like androgynous, fae-like teenagers. They are equally mischievous, inclined to the same whims, and more prone to acting identical. However, it may seem that there is some differences to them in these moments. Artemis is the most dominant of the two. She is a strong, independent, self-possessed person, more fond of hunting and riding than anything else. Apollo prefers staying indoors in quiet activities, especially after being in the public eye. He likes reading and crafting, and is more submissive than Artemis by a hair. They take it in turns to decide the day's activities.
History : ʎɹoʇsᴉH
The twins were born to Marcus and Rhea Mayfield, and are numbers seven and eight of their children. Marcus' parents were rich merchants that bought an estate and title when he was five. They are still fabulously wealthy, yet very down to earth. They have enough that even Artemis' dowry was significant and Apollo's yearly allowance could net him a poor daughter of one of the lower noble houses.
When they were born, their mother couldn't tell them apart, for their genitalia was so similar that it was difficult to tell boy from girl. Nervous about their ambiguous groins, she secretly took them to a hedgewitch for help, and was told that she should not be alarmed. They would sort themselves out. The hedgewitch recommended a niece of hers to be their nurse.
And so their nurse, Lilia, took care of them. She dressed them and called them by the name that went with the outfit. She helped them each learn every lesson the other did until they were old enough to teach each other. The lack of stress of not needing to figure them out helped their mother significantly.
Still, there were many shenanigans that happened before anyone became aware of the switching. Days that Artemis would spend playing in the mud with her brothers; entire afternoons of Apollo at his mother's and sisters' sides learning drawing. Sometimes they would switch on birthdays so that they could open each others' presents. One of the most significant times was in their twelfth year when Artemis spent an entire term at Apollo's boarding school with no one the wiser.
When the two first went out into society, it was with the expectation that they find advantageous marriages, but with no hurry. All their older sibs were grown and married well. It was at a ball that they met Ashleigh, and both felt an attachment to him. Artemis chased after, and both grew more intrigued as time passed and he proved to know which was which with increasing accuracy. It was only a few months after meeting him that Artemis and Ashleigh wed, and Apollo moved in with his sister. It was accepted that twins so close could not be parted.
Only the twins' family, nurse, and Ashleigh know they switch about, and they keep the secret well.
