He wasn't actually training, nor was he attempting to make it look like he was actually training. Instead, he was sitting in front of one of the makeshift dummies and staring intently at it as though it might hold the answers to the secrets of the universe. To any outsider, it might have looked like he was just really very interested in testing dummies.
In reality, Gale was thinking about a variety of things that included a) Caelius stripping him of his specialization, the rat b*****d; b) Stormy, of course; and c) the mission (for lack of a better word) with Otto. And he was looking at the dummy so intensely only because he had actually come to the training field to train and then had gotten extremely mixed up in his own thoughts and feelings.
Needless to say, he hadn't actually managed to get anything accomplished this morning whatsoever.

A polite cough came from behind Gale, along with the unsure shuffling of feet. "Er," Tobias began as way of introducing himself. "You... You wouldn't happen to be Gale, would you?" The coat matched, the hair matched, the general location matched, and while a faint sense of recognition tickled the back of his mind Tobias decided to err on the side of caution.
"I was told to deliver this? By someone who shoved it into my hands and said to deliver this to Gale," he added as he held a flat, inch-thick package towards Gale. "I don't know names quite yet, so I can't say for certain who it was but -- oh! Right. Hang on." The package was retracted as Tobias dug around in his coat pocket. At last he pulled out a piece of paper and a pen, offering it to Gale first. "I need you to sign this to confirm delivery."
It took Gale a few moments to be pulled out of his inner musings, a slightly concerned expression on his pale face. It wasn't until he actually heard his name spoken aloud that Gale managed to drag himself back into reality, back into Deus where he was currently sitting cross-legged on the training field in front of a practice dummy."
He twisted around and caught sight of an unfamiliar face belonging to an unfamiliar trainee. Frowning slightly, Gale eyed the paper and its accompanying pen with a look of mild suspicion.
"Yes, I'm Gale," he said, at long length. "You're not working for Mark, are you? Singing this won't mean that I'm suddenly in charge of organizing Miniskirt Mondays, does it?"

Tobias looked blank. "Uh, don't take this the wrong way but who's Mark? I mean, I've already spent ten minutes looking for Oliver Klozoff earlier, I'm just glad that you're an actual person." He waved the receipt around, adding, "Could you please consider signing it before I get suckered into doing another grunt-level task only to have the person who's making me do this come after me?"
Gale squinted for a moment longer, his gaze still suspicious; but he reached out and plucked the paper from Tobias' hand anyway, glancing over it briefly before scribbling his name at the bottom. He passed it back up to the trainee.
"I don't think I've seen you around before," Gale said, squinting. "Are you new?"

"Yeah." Tobias pocketed the receipt and handed the package over. "Kind of. Woke up," he faltered, looking for the right words, "About two months ago I guess? Roughly? Been keeping my head down. Anyway, here you go."
Then back at Tobias. Then back at the book. Then Tobias.
Book. Tobias. Book.
Tobias.
"I'm not sure I'll be needing this, thanks," said Gale delicately, and proceeded to gently place the book back into the box, pat the top of it, and then hold the box back up towards the trainee, a wide smile on his face.
"Here, you can have it, a present from me. Welcome to Deus."

"Uh, thanks?" Tobias said as he took the box and looked at the box, then looked at Gale as the dots were connected. The trainee shrugged, fighting with the box for a moment as he folded the flaps down in order to somewhat "seal" the top part in. While reading down in the basement was impossible, Tobias could always use the box. Maybe the book could be used to steady a table in the future.
Gale just continued to stare at Tobias for what was probably a very uncomfortable amount of time. Finally, after what seemed like forever, he stopped with the suspiciousness and instead let out a small sigh, Gale shaking his head.
"What's your name?" he asked.

The more Gale stared the more Tobias fidgeted. There was something about the Death Hunter that set Tobias on edge. He swallowed uncomfortably, wondering why he was suddenly hungry.
"Huh? Oh! I, ah, my name's Tobias." He paused, stumbling. "Sir. Mr. Gentry. Er, how do you like to be addressed...?"
"I'm not going to bite you," he said, a little irritably. "Stop looking like I'm going to pull out my gun and shoot you at any moment. It's too early in the morning for that."
He brushed a few stray locks of hair away from his face and added, with a slight snort, "Just Gale is fine, I'm not really anyone important. How are you settling in so far at Deus? I'm sure it's, erm...a slight change in your surroundings..."

If Gale meant to reassure Tobias, he managed in making the teen tense up even more. He has a gun. He has a gun and he's willing to shoot me. Not now, but what about later in the day? Or is he talking about noon? Evening? Maybe he means in a few minutes. s**t!
"Not dead yet," Tobias replied cheerfully with a forced smile. "Kind of takes getting used to the place and getting used to the fact that the basement is pitch-black. You wouldn't happen to know where I could pick up a flashlight or something would you?"
"You could try digging on the beach," he suggested, not unkindly. "There seems to be all sorts of things that keep popping up on there, though I will say that not all of them are the kinds of things you'd want to find..."
He tugged at a lock of his hair and said, "You live in the basement, then? I haven't been down there in a while. I live in town," he added, gesturing vaguely in the direction of his house. "I suppose it would be safer to live back in the dorms, but I don't think I'm willing to give up my kitchen just yet."
