Freddie would be celebrating his fifth birthday in a couple of weeks. How Coleen had managed to keep the little s**t alive as long as she had was beyond Jack, but he was glad of it all the same. Freddie was the kind of kid who shoved crayons up his nose and ate glue, but he adored his Uncle Jack. And his Uncle Jack adored him right back. That was what brought Jack to one of Destiny City's most popular toy stores, at the heart of the biggest shopping mall. He wandered up and down the aisles, hands in the pockets of his leather jacket, and had to check himself when a little boy with snot running down his nose started screaming at his mother when she refused to buy him a particular robot. Ugh. Thoroughly reminded of all the reasons to use a condom, Jack took leave of the store. On his way out he snitched a lollypop out of the hand of a toddler when her mother wasn't looking, and darted out of the way when she started to cry. He shoved the candy into his mouth and shuffled quickly passed a shoe store and a men's clothing store before skidding to a halt in front of a women's lingerie store. Jack smiled at himself, pretended he wasn't checking out the mannequins in the window, and whipped a skinny black comb out of the back pocket of his jeans. He started fixing his hair.

Delphine had left her apartment in a reasonable state, but it was surprising just what two years of abandonment could do to a place. One of her first orders of business had been to get off her a** and go shopping for supplies, and maybe some food to stuff into their empty cabinets. At the mere mention of doing something productive, Kamboja had disappeared to do... whatever it was Kamboja did when he was being a lazy bum at home. He was probably being a lazy bum somewhere else. She had done most of her necessary shopping earlier in the day, and was now taking some time for herself.
One would think that neglecting her duties as a senshi for two years would have given her plenty of time to pamper herself, but then again, no girl could be pampered enough. Delphine hadn't even been focusing on herself during her two year disappearance. There had been other, more important, things to take care of. The disappointing truth was that she hadn't even accomplished that. But, whatever, she wasn't even going to think about that now. The young woman was looking to restock her closet, since a lot of her clothes were now outdated.
However, access to her next shopping destination was impeded by, well now. Delphine frowned, watching the young man eye up some mannequins. That alone was annoying, but she felt downright peeved by the time he whipped a comb out of his pocket and starting fixing his hair. What time period did he think he was in, the 80s? Delphine sighed, and decided to do the poor man a favor. On her way into the lingerie store, she passed close enough by him to snatch the comb right out of his hand. Bringing her hands to either end of the comb, she snapped it cleanly in two, and held the broken halves out for Jack to take.
"You're welcome."

For a second it was all Jack could do to blink at Delphine, torn between horror and a strange attraction. It wasn't everyday he met a woman with the stones to be so goddamned rude. He shook his head when she offered him the broken pieces, and fished a second little black comb out of his other pocket.
"I don't want that now," he said, holding the comb out of reach, but still within plain sight, "I always keep a spare."
Jack was taunting her on purpose, intrigued by Delphine's gall. He had always loved a confident woman, and wondered if it was worth trying to get to know her better. But he knew better than to follow her into a lingerie shop uninvited.
"Name's Jack," said Jack, who did not bother to hide the mostly-curious way his eyes roamed over Delphine's frame. Usually Jack made an effort to be more of a gentleman, but she'd already crossed that line by breaking his comb. He owed her nothing. His lips twitched at the corners.
"You must be 'A' Cup." If that. Girl didn't have much going on under her shirt, as far as he could tell.

Delphine stared at Jack, almost dumbstruck as he whipped another sharp comb out of his pocket. Oh god, this man was definitely a tool. It was almost appalling to her that Jack had another spare comb. Perhaps Delphine couldn't help him, which meant her poorly, but well-meaning, interference had been totally pointless and a waste of her energy. Jack was clearly well beyond help. With a grimace she flipped her hand over and let the two broken halves of the comb fall onto the floor. There was a garbage can nearby, but it wasn't her comb, so neither was it her responsibility.
The young woman grew more and more irritated as Jack's eyes blatantly roamed over her. The man was clearly too desperate to have any sort of decent love life. Every move he made was insulting, and sure, even if she had made the first blow, there was no excuse for his behavior. Delphine felt as if it were rather childish. "And you must be single," she drawled sarcastically. She didn't bother to correct him, because he had no right to know her cup size. Besides, smaller boobs made it so much easier to move when she was fighting.
Jack didn't get her name, because she saw no reason to give it to someone she wasn't going to waste more than a couple of minutes of her time on. "I was going to give you some friendly advice and aid, but really, I think you're too far gone for anyone to be able to help you," Delphine admitted with a small smirk. It was rather pleasing to her that someone this annoying had to be desperately lonely, and because they were desperately lonely they acted annoyingly. It was a vicious cycle, and she dearly hoped that Jack got himself stuck in it.

Interesting woman.
Jack could not decide whether he liked Delphine or not. She was rude, and provocative without being sexual. Everything from the way she'd snapped his comb to the smirk on her face hinted at... Something. Was she always like this, or just trying to piss him off? Yes, he was single. But relationship status was never synonymous with dating game. And Jack knew he had it.
Nevermind that Alkaid ignored all of Proustite's half-hearted advances. She didn't count. Mostly because she was ******** nuts, and he was too terrified of Hematite to give it an honest effort.
"It's sweet of you to be so concerned about me ."
His self-esteem was not so poor that it could be damaged by a skinny girl with an obvious wardrobe problem, and an apparent compulsion towards giving strangers advice they had not asked for.
"If I didn't know better," Jack drawled, chucking out his lollypop in favour of a cigarette. He pulled the pack out of the inside of jacket, popped one in his mouth, and did not light it. "I'd wonder if you aren't a sailor scout. Most of the ones I know like sticking their noses where they don't belong."
He did not care about the implications he was making in regards to himself. Unless she was a senshi, and he thought that was about as likely as the Negaverse deciding to back the ******** off, she wouldn't be to able to do a damn thing about it. If she was a senshi she couldn't very well kill him without proving he was Proustite first. And all he had to do to avoid that was to remain Jack.
He sighed when a security guard motioned at his cigarette, and then took it out of his mouth.
"Apologies if I hurt your feelings," Jack said, lips quirking at the corners. "Let me buy you dinner to make up for it."

He couldn't know that she was a senshi, Delphine was sure of that. She hadn't been back to Destiny City long enough to somehow let her identity slip. But, the way he suggested that she could be set her on edge. The young woman's eyes grew sharp, and she went from being annoyed to downright irritated. Letting it effect her too much was one clear way to give it away that she was a senshi. A civilian being insulted by being compared to a senshi was one thing, a civilian getting pissed and aggressive was another thing entirely. She mentally scolded herself, and forced her emotions to calm.
"That's not a nice thing to compare a girl to," Delphine chastised, her voice sounding light, but her eyes were still a little dark. She did not appreciate that comment, and now she was too paranoid about letting this idiot wander off. What if for some reason he did know? She couldn't let some civilian run off to the Negaverse and tell them that this one goth chic was secretly an a**-kicking senshi. Delphine wasn't adverse to beating up civilians - she wouldn't kill Jack, but she'd keep him from blabbing the best she could. But, she wouldn't do that without good cause, and insofar it seemed like Jack's words had been nothing more than a joke.
A really terrible one that now had a sailor scout rather interested in him.
God, and now he was asking her out. Delphine was loathe to do anything with the young man, but her paranoia practically screamed at her to go along with it. "Is this how you pick up all the girls?" she asked with an arch of her brow. Her reply wasn't a yes, but it also wasn't a no. She didn't want him to buy her dinner, but she wanted to stick around long enough to determine if he was or was not a threat.

"Nah," Jack said, lips spreading into a grin the size of the sun, "just the ones that say yes."
She hadn't agreed to go out with him, but she hadn't said 'no' either and the lines were still grey enough that Jack felt comfortable continuing in his pursuit. Delphine had so far proven herself crass and judgmental, but Jack found himself admiring several of her other qualities. Delphine was bold. Delphine didn't seem to care one lick how other people perceived her. Delphine didn't take bullshit from anyone-- and that, especially, was a trait in women that Jack had always possessed a healthy respect for.
As a gentleman, Jack was adverse to pushing Delphine for a proper answer. He was persistent by nature, but compassionate in the wake of her dilemma.
"I know what you're thinking," he said, rolling his cigarette between his fingers, "Should I go out with this handsome stranger? What if he's the love of my life? What if it's not true, what they say about the size of a man's feet?"
Jack's voice was light and playful. It should have been clear, from the little glint in his eye, that he was only teasing.
"I'm a size 11 and a half, by the way."

"You're implying that someone said yes, but I genuinely doubt any girl has fallen for that." Delphine rolled her eyes at the young man. He was very, almost painfully so, forward. But then again, Delphine was usually just as forward. She just didn't spend her free time trying to pick up boys in the mall. If she felt a particular inclination to be with a man, Delphine would just hit up the bars. Those were more fun, but then again she rarely took someone home with her. She left that up to Kam, who for some reason seemed unable to keep women off of him at times.
Delphine really didn't understand it. It had to be the dreads, that was the only reason she could conjure that wasn't immensely off-putting.
The young woman resisted the urge to groan in dismay as Jack carried on. Really, it was taking a considerable amount of patience that Delphine did not have to stand here and listen to this man toot his own horn. Normally, she was more likely to punch him in the face for being an idiot and go back on her own way. Hell, that idea sounded more fun than standing here and putting up with his barrage of idiocy. It didn't matter that he wasn't serious, even Delphine could tell he was trying to be a little more light-hearted... but by Cosmos it was getting annoying.
"Just," she raised her hand, signaling him to 'stop', "shh. Talking does you absolutely no favors. Just stop for a second. You're reading as totally desperate for attention, so if you'd just shut up, maybe some girl would be crazy enough to actually want to hear you talk, and find that ridiculous pick-up line hilarious."

If Delphine wanted to get rid of Jack it would have been smarter to be kind to him. As they were, the harder she played to get, the more he wanted to buy her dinner. It was just a bit of food. A couple of hours with the best company Destiny City had to offer.
He cocked an eyebrow when she lifted her hand, and then let her own mouth fly.
"So what you're actually saying..." Jack drawled after she'd finished, lips quirking at the corners, "... is that I'm not so bad to look at, as long as I keep my mouth shut."
Jack pocketed his cigarette.
"Jesus, 'A' Cup, that's kinda medieval," he tsked her, and then heaved a dramatic sigh. "But. If you only want me for my body, I guess I could learn to live with that."

Whatever chance Jack actually had with the woman was being tossed away with such carelessness that Delphine was actually astounded. The way he tried to twist her words to his favor seemed outright desperate. Either the young man got too much attention that fed this behavior, or he got none at all, which in turn made him act so desperate so he got the attention he was desperately craving. Delphine was trying her best to remain level-headed. She had just gotten back to Destiny City - there was no reason to already start causing trouble.
But, god, Jack was begging for it. She could feel the anger tightening her chest, and looking down to her hand now, she flexed her fingers before curling them into a tight fist. It was likely the only warning Jack would get before Delphine decided she had taken enough of his insults and overt attempts to win a date with her.
Her arm suddenly raised, and she slammed her fist to the side of Jack's face. It had been a while since she had actually punched someone, but the assault came almost natural to her. Even the burn against her knuckles was oddly pleasant while discomforting. It was funny, really, that her first fight wasn't going to be against an agent of Chaos, but rather one ridiculously stupid civilian. <******** off, a*****e," she growled.

If Jack noticed Delphine's hand tightening into a fist he did not take the threat seriously. Not because she was a woman-- most of the ladies Jack packed a harder punch than he did. But because he had not anticipated how easy it would be to ruffle Delphine's feathers.
Her fist cracked against the side of his face, knuckles scraping skin. Jack winced and swore, reeling backwards out of both pain and surprise. He clutched at his cheek, glared at Delphine, and did not feel a shred of remorse for the things that he'd said to her.
Jack did not like to think of woman as bitches, but might have been willing to make an exception for Delphine. While he was not exactly on his best behaviour, she'd already broken his comb and tried to put a hole in the side of his face. Of the pair of them, she was the one with boundary issues.
"Whatever," he scoffed, turning away from Delphine with a dismissive wave of his hand.
"What the ******** are you looking at?" he snapped at a skinny teenaged boy who stopped to stare. Jack smiled when he moved quickly away from them, and then started to leave himself.
