The too-rapid transition from kitten to human found Mimsy with her fingers curled up like claws, nails scraping against an indiscernible blur's shield. It was not, however, the feeling of nails against shield that took precedence - her body went tense at the sensation of her skin against skin. Against a lot of skin, if all of the splotches of varied flesh colors in front of her eyes were any indication.

Her notable lack of clothing was the least of her concerns: a body was just a particularly fleshy machine, after all, ultimately no better than their golems. The absence of her glasses was far more problematic, because it meant a tremendous disadvantage in a situation that was already terribly unfortunate.

It was with a weary, wide-eyed look of betrayal that she squirmed away from the pile, tripping over herself as she tried to find somewhere safe. Somewhere she could feel less vulnerable.

She groped her way into a room and hurriedly closed the door.

The small closet was dark and smelled of dust and chemicals, and she had to push past several containers and a wastebin to find room to sit. She didn't try to find a light; darkness had always been a comfort, and it was beneficial now in its ability to distract her from her inability to see. The less she had to concern herself with, the better, because her mind still raced with a thousand other thoughts and broken equations without it.

She hugged her knees to her chest and propped her chin up on them, one shaky hand passing over her face. This was manageable. She'd had worse, she reminded herself. It didn't make this pleasant, by far, but it was certainly survivable.

Robert had turned into a raucous ball of laughter the moment everyone had transformed back to humans. Naked humans. He was crushing three - no, four? People underneath him, and he couldn't stop laughing about it.

Then Mimsy ran, and the laughter died in his throat.

"MIMSY WAIT - s**t, sorry, SORRY - " He'd kicked at least one person in his sudden struggle to stand up, and he knew he just squished someone else even harder, but it only took a second before he was up on his feet. He barrelled down the hall after her - and it wasn't even anything new for him to be doing this naked. But he had a goal this time, and that was his only focus. He followed her as fast as he could, until she disappeared.

He hadn't seen which door she'd walked into. "s**t!" He screamed one last time, until the sound of a click made him whirl around and stare at the door behind him. It had exposed itself as Mimsy's door! So he opened it, and slipped inside.

The door clicked shut again behind him, leaving him in darkness. "Mimsygirl?" He whispered out warily, while both of his hands reached out to try and feel for something. "You in here?" There wasn't much room to maneuver in, and he was bumping into things almost immediately, but when he felt the soft give of flesh against his leg, he crumpled up beside her. She was curled up into herself, and that made it easy for him to pick her up into his lap. His body surrounded her, protective as always.

"Baby," He whispered quietly. "It's okay, I'm here. Nobody saw nothin'. And if they did I'll bust their eyes out." He had his own priorities, slightly skewed from hers.

As the door opened, Mimsy held her breath, waiting for the intruder to identify themselves. When he did, she exhaled through her teeth and counted to the twentieth digit of pi to calm herself.

It didn't help.

"What?" she irritably grumbled, rubbing at her eyes like she had as a feline. That didn't help either, but she couldn't stand feeling so powerless. This was better than nothing.

"You should do that regardless. Preventative measures. Press your thumbs in until they rupture. Or continue to apply even pressure, and allow the muscles to tear. Dislodge them from their sockets and sever the optic nerves, one at a time. " The suggestion brought a smile, the first hint of a laugh following soon after. It was a nice visual to imagine, and she let it linger as long as it would. It might cleanse her palate, at least.

But it was gone too soon, and the thought of being so exposed to so many potentially dangerous enemies readily returned. The probability of a catastrophic event after offering that advantage was much too great, and face after face compiled themselves in her thoughts, ranked from least to most unsettling.

"I do not like whatever physical activity that was. Hugging or cuddling or...ugh." She finally moved, just enough to portray her disgust, then stilled again. "Distasteful."

Considering her current position, her statement was an odd one; she didn't seem to recognize as much.

Robert went very still around her. Those were some specific instructions, and he actually didn't want to pop out anyone's eyeballs, but if anyone commented on seeing her nude he was sure he'd break something. He didn't laugh with her, but his arms squeezed tightly, desperate to reassure her. It was the second statement, a telling tale of how she hated hugging and cuddling, that made him finally chuckle. He didn't point out the obvious - because there was a very important difference.

They'd all been naked.

"I know." He muttered into her shoulder. "I didn't think we were gonna turn back so soon, otherwise I would have carried you out of there. Actually, I didn't think, period." He tried to remember what his thought process had been as a cat, but found it hard to recall. Things had been foggy and focused all at once. He'd lost the ability to reason, as a cat. (And he didn't have much to begin with.)

"I'm sorry, baby." He whispered guiltily. He settled in for a moment of mournful silence, before inhaling a gasp of breath. "Want me to try to make you feel better? I bet I can! Oh, lemme try!"

"No, you did not," Mimsy concurred, plainly stated - simply factual, nothing more. Still, failing to think was the kind of mistake that required an apology, so she didn't stop him from expressing his guilt or offering reparations.

"Might your method include the immediate retrieval of my glasses and clothing?" she asked, hopeful.

Probably not.

Frankly, in spite of all previously gathered data, she could not begin to imagine that would have been his first thought, which drove a particular curiosity to learn what it was. It felt safe to explore this time, in the confines of a closet. It wasn't as if they were in the Sahara, or a universe where proper physics and the rules of reality did not apply. Statistically, this was one of the least risky of all of the questions that she'd been intrigued about in a long time. What could go wrong?

"All right." She reached over her shoulder and poked his chin up with the tip of her finger. "You may attempt to make it better."

Robert beamed - not that she could see it. "I can totally get your clothes! I have to get back to the room to get everything anyway. Okay, but your glasses.. are probably back where.. okay. OKAY. I got this." His hands pressed down on her shoulders and squeezed them affectionately. "You wait right here, don't move, don't open the door for nobody, and I will be back in like five minutes. Tops."

He bent in and kissed her forehead, lingering there longer than he needed to. When his lips pulled away, his own forehead took their place. "I promise. I'll be right back, and hopefully, it'll be worth it."

Disentangling her was harder than it should have been. Every part of his body urged him to stay, despite all of his plans. He managed it after some fuss, and then got back up and slipped through the door.

It had completely slipped his mind that he was still naked.

Robert jogged through the halls to the doorway with ease. It shouldn't have been a surprise that things were quiet - and empty - since everyone was still recovering from being transformed (and untransformed) into a kitten. But he found it eerie, and his footfalls moved faster because of it. He was in front of Lucky's room before he knew it - unlocked because no one had been able to lock a door as a kitten. He busted in, hiding his eyes in case Lucky was there. When the room proved empty, Robert grabbed and pulled on a pair of pants. Then he set about gathering clothing for Mimsy - his favorite dress seemed like the easiest option. It wasn't favoritism, he told himself. Just easier!

He shoved a few necessarily items into his pockets, but soon enough he was rifling through the closets, searching the high shelves where only he could reach. He pulled out three boxes - one was long, one was very plain and small, and one was velvety red and heart shaped. Valentines Gifts, clearly. He wasn't very original, but he tried his hardest.

After a quick stop to retrieve the abandoned glasses, Robert was back in the closet, breathing heavily from how hard he'd been running. He closed the door before she could see anything, and returned to sitting at her side.

"Okay." He huffed out raggedly, as he hung the dress on her shoulder for her to take. "We're gonna play a little game."

The promise to bring what she'd asked for was nice, albeit unexpected, and Mimsy remained silent as he progressed through his mental checklist (or blueprints, or pictures, whatever it might be). It took an immense amount of restraint, but she didn't even count the seconds that he was gone to prove him wrong if the count passed three hundred. Discouraging him after he did what she asked was not the correct message to send.

Instead, she waited as patiently as she could, fidgeting with the corners of her nails to prevent her hands from idly bothering the materials in the room. It wasn't a lab, thank goodness, but that didn't mean she could throw away her safety for a few minutes of busying herself. Accidentally covering her hands in corrosive chemicals would definitely prevent her from remaining in this closet, if she wanted to retain motor skills. Or her hands in general.

When he returned and placed something on her shoulder, she cautiously ran her hands over it. Clothing. She breathed a relieved sigh into the nylon as she pulled her dress over her head, and waited expectantly to see if he'd brought anything else.

"A game?" All of the curiosity that had been in her voice before he left was now magnified tenfold. "Certainly. I must caution you, though: if I play, I will win."

She tugged down on the hem of the dress so it sat at the correct length before resting back onto her heels again.

"Explain the premise. And the rules, if there are any."

"GOOD." Robert burst out laughing, a jolly and bubbling sound. "I want you to win this game. In fact, I don't think you can lose! It'll be fun." He was still letting out giddy chuckles when he handed her the first box. It was a foot and a half long, very narrow, and easy to open from the top. Inside were, to no one's surprise, roses.

9 of them.

The florist had him pick out the roses he wanted, for their Valentines Day sale. A dozen for 20 dollars. He'd chosen three red, three pink, and three white.

A dozen.

The clerk had neither the heart, nor the decency to correct him.

"Okay. Open up the box and guess what's inside." This was the easiest of the three, as roses felt very obvious, and their scent was another dead giveaway. It was just a shame he'd forgotten to consider the thorns.

It felt a little strange to be presented with the challenge of a game that she was meant to win, but the pursuit of victory wasn't discouraged by the abnormality, so Mimsy made no mention of it. The first puzzle needed to be solved, anyway; she focused on the box in her hands, and began the process of determining her answer.

The process was a very meticulous one.

She first examined every inch of the exterior with her fingertips, brushed thumbs over the edges, tested the weight, and formed a rough estimate of dimensions based on her findings. With that established, she lifted the lid and set it aside.

The scent of the roses should have cautioned her to the potential of thorns, but the scent was not necessarily indicative of anything floral, so she touched them anyway.

<NNNOOO, the present is OUR DEAAATH-->

Svensyl's screeching startled her more than the thorns along the stem, and she almost threw the box aside before the panic subsided.

"Roses," she blurted out, tone wavering from residual adrenaline. "There are roses inside."

The sound of a startled Mimsy made his heart leap with anxiety. "Yeah. Yeah it's .. do you not like roses?" His hands reached for the box, pulling it away quickly. "I thought, because, you know.. Valentine's Day.. well, that's okay."

He sounded completely crushed.

"Here's the next one." He set the heart shaped box on her lap. It's cover was smooth, velvety fur - and it had already been opened once. A peanut crunch was missing. "It's just more Valentine's junk. You don't have to like it, but you have to guess what it is before I can give you the next one, which you will like." He still had hope that he wasn't going to end this game on a low note - even if his first attempts were failures.

But he knew that he should have accounted for this. These were typical Valentine's day gifts that typical girls liked - and Mimsy was no typical girl. He'd never treated her as one before, and shouldn't have done so now. His only reasoning when he'd splurged for the gifts had been that this was their very first Valentine's Day together as a couple... and it felt like he had to do everything right, for once.

Which led him to do everything wrong.

He promised himself he would never make the same mistake again. His hand reached out for the roses, to hold one idly while she opened her second box, and a thorn pricked him right on the index finger. "Owwww," He hissed, bringing his finger up to his mouth to suck on it. "Watch out for the roses, they've got thorns."

Be - ******** - lated.

"What? No, I like them. Their evolutionary hybridization is especially intriguing. Thank you." She liked them as much as she liked anything, anyway. Why had he thought that? Maybe it was her reaction. It was understandable that it would require an explanation, when she considered how much of the problem had been inaudible. "I was just startled by the--"

Then Robert found the thorns, and it didn't seem nearly as imperative to finish her sentence.

Mimsy paused for a moment before attending to the next box, both to process what just happened and to allow Svensyl to calm down, hoping that it was now clear that they were not dying. When she was satisfied that the deluge of whining was over, she examined the second box as she had the first.

Its texture was strange - not quite fur, not quite cloth - but did seem synthetic. The box was not uniform, either, and she laughed to herself when she recognized the (anatomically inaccurate) shape. The interior seemed to rattle as she lifted the lid, so she was especially careful as she slowly touched the contents.

"Oh! Confections!" She stifled more laughter at a joke she hadn't even made yet, and almost prevented herself from getting it out at all. "Presumably lacking in thorns, correct?"

Nio Love
PostPosted: Tue Feb 18, 2014 6:18 am

With a heavy sigh, he flooded with relief at her reaction. It sounded positive enough, and he grabbed a hold of that positivity. He was practically bubbling when he spoke. "Nope! No thorns! Only chocolates and peanuts and smushy flavored candy." He paused, stilling to listen to the silence. It was an effort to try and hear whether or not she was eating them, because he wanted to give her the time to enjoy her last normal present, before he gave her the last one.

Eventually, he slid the smallest box her way. It pressed against her leg, waiting for her to pick it up.

"So." His voice hitched quietly. "I thought real hard about this. It took me a while, but it was really important." He slid closer, so their knees were touching. The little box with its tiny bow on top waited between them. "But before you open it, I wanna say something."

It seemed like an important moment to say something.

"It took me a while to figure out what.. what happened with us. I know you know what I mean - we're the oddest couple I've ever known. And I take a long time to figure s**t out in my head, so it took me all this time. But I think I got an answer. So this is what I'm thinking."

She couldn't see it, but he had his thinking face on. It was determined.

"There's a lot of stuff you're good at. And I'm pretty awful at it. But when I'm around you, I feel like, you know what, maybe I could be better. And I study, and I work hard, and I guess what I'm saying is you're a good role model." He laughed quietly. "And there's a few things I guess I'm good at too.. and I really like being there for you when you're lost on how to feel. So I guess we kind of fit, when you think about it. You know?" His hands meshed together, and settled on her knee. "Like puzzle pieces."

It was a metaphor. Robert did not often have the mental capability to think of good metaphors, but he'd been thinking about this one a lot. It was waiting for the right moment to be used, and this was it.

"So I guess what I wanna say is.. thanks. For never giving up on me. And I won't ever give up on you. And that's all." He waited a full three seconds, before his hand started to nudge the box against her leg. "Okay! Open it! Open iiiit."

In the silence, Mimsy touched each of the chocolates, counting them, cataloging their shapes and textures, a twitch of a grin when she found one missing. She didn't pick any up to eat them, nor did she lick off the bit of melted chocolate that the tactile investigation left on her fingertips; consuming any food products while she was not hungry was a concept so strange to her that it didn't cross her mind.

The change in his voice urged her to close the box of candies, so she did, absently rubbing the excess chocolate off of her hands as she set it aside to listen. This was strange; the actions and verbalized sentiments were not anything close to what she had accounted for. Valentine's Day appeared so simplistic from what she knew, but this had a curious depth to it. Much of it had a surprising level of thought placed into it, and the rest - like the fact about her impressive skill level - were the sort of compliments that were critically important to maintaining her ego. His words were so purposeful, spoken with specific intent.

From Robert, that was a very peculiar anomaly.

She put one hand on the box, and hesitantly placed the other on his hand, because it seemed like something that she should do.

"Thank you," she murmured, tone more inquisitive than gracious. "You do not have to thank me for not 'giving up' on you, however. I was under the impression that I had already established that abandoning this in any capacity was, and is, simply not an option. That will not change, and you need not be thankful that I am doing what is the most logically sound thing to do. Of course I would not purposely opt out of something that I need to such a significant degree."

Her thumb moved over the box on her leg, and she wedged her nail into the crease in the middle, testing how easily it would open.

"Continuing with your metaphor, for example: upon discovering the correct fit, you would not separate the pieces that connect, nor would you thank the puzzle for being complete. It exists to be. That is its purpose. Ergo, upon our discovery, we identified a purpose that was more than a fleeting hypothesis. This is correct, and is congruent with your feelings of connecting pieces. I am of the opinion that we should extend congratulations instead of thank-yous, so...congratulations on your exceptional achievement. I hope for continued success in this endeavor."

With that, she opened the box, just enough to touch what was inside.

"Oh." He breathed the word out, as if everything he'd been building up for was pulled out from under him, deflating him to the core. He didn't want to congratulate them on finding each other, even though it did sort of make sense when she said it with all the big fancy talk. He wanted her to accept his gratitude, because he still felt it writhing inside him, coiling like a snake in his stomach. He just didn't know how to express his need to her, because he wasn't good with the words like she was. He fell silent, lost in the thick contemplation of trying to find the right words to say - when all the words he'd spent weeks putting together had failed him.

These few moments weren't going to be enough.

Still, he refused to congratulate her. He knew that she felt their relationship was a personal achievement, but this moment wasn't meant for achievements. It was meant for something much more important. If he'd been more eloquent, he probably could have convinced her of that. But he was just Robert. He could be nothing more.

Inside of the box, something smooth and cold and hard sat. It had rounded edges, and if picked up, fit neatly right in the middle of the palm of her hand.

"You only get one guess." He'd broken from his reverie of thought when he realized she had opened the box, to inform her of the rules. She was too clever - and he had to make this at least a little hard for her.

After all that she said, Mimsy expected a very different reaction. It was a positive series of statements, as far as she could tell, and 'oh' didn't quite make sense here. That was becoming a trend; though she decided long ago that this was essentially equivalent to venturing into a nonsensical wonderland, she had never quite been this far.

It made her feel a bit lost.

To avoid that feeling (and the doubt it tended to bring), she tried to focus on what she knew, and returned her full attention to their game. She tipped the box for its contents to fall into her palm, allowing her cupped hand to warm it as it sat. Its relative temperature was indicative of some things and negated the possibility of others, so she tested its texture to continue ruling options out.

"One guess," she quietly repeated, turning it with her thumb. "Is it a functional object? Something that can be worn? A decorative item?"

Only one guess, but he'd said nothing about questions. With the introduction of this rule, she had to be certain beyond reasonable doubt before she would feel comfortable suggesting what it might be.
