The little colt approached the schoolhouse bright and early on this most important of days with a nervousness befitting someone attempting what he was about to.

A lovingly wrapped parcel was laid on a specific filly's desk, a handwritten card perched atop, declaring the gift for Nevermore. No sooner had the careful arrangement been set that he heard the door handle jiggle behind him and his nerves got the better of him, the lovestruck little ghost phasing right through the floor and into the basement.

Revenant sighed his defeat atop a pile of school supplies.

It wasn't like he'd even written his own poem, all the ones he had turned out had been... lacking. The situation had been dire, and only one that Lord Byron could save.

Astraea Pandora

Nevermore: ~is reading her mystery card over and over and over, who in the world would give her something?! She picked up the doll that'd come with the card. There was something about it, something not right. Not that was a BAD thing, actually it made the whole doll much more interesting, but still..who would give her such things.~

Revenant: -After much moping around and being melodramatic all to himself in the basement, Revenant finally decided to climb to the top of a box pile and phase just the top of his head through the schoolhouse floor in order to peek at the filly he'd anonymously asked to come to the schoolhouse.-

Astraea Pandora

She read the poem again, this time out loud.

"She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that's best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes;
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o'er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express,
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

And on that cheek, and o'er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!"

She smiled, just a little and felt a little blush in her cheeks, but then looked around to see if anyone saw her. She was conflicted, one the one hoof, who'd do this? On the other hoof..who wanted to try and get at her.

Revenant: As sad as he was that his own writing abilities had failed him, all attempts at composing a lovely poem for Nevermore always turning out lackluster, a little Lord Byron really suited Nevermore. It was wonderful to hear her recite the poem, a slight pink tinge casting to translucent cheeks, head ducking further into the floorboards so the top of his head barely showed.

Astraea Pandora
Nevermore: ~carefully replaces the card and returns to the doll. She turns her over several times, brushing her hair back into place each time a curl fell out of place and trying not to muss the dress~ "I'm going to call you..." ~she considered~ "No..I better not..I better let you tell me what your name. I wonder how you got in there..?" ~Her tail swayed, pleased. It would be fun to discover the dolls secrets, and she hugged it excitedly.~

Revenant: Watching Nevermore happily hug the doll was wonderful. He had known the pretty doll was far more than it appeared to be could feel a sort of kinship with the item, but had worried that maybe the filly would not notice- a fear that was thusly relieved. Of course Nevermore would detect that the doll wasn't just a doll. She was a special doll, like Nevermore was a special filly.

A dreamy little sigh was cut off by his hoof slipping on his precarious box platform, Revenant loudly tumbling down to the basement floor.

Astraea Pandora
Nevermore didn't jump as much as she hit the ceiling and stayed in a rafter, panting like a dog on a hot summer day. She looked at the doll and then at the floor and said in a slightly shaking voice. "Did..did you do that? Let's..not destroy the school ok..? I'm not sure what you are yet but I don't think you'd be anything compared to Miss Glory P.O.'d the school was knocked down.."

For having a porcelain face and set expression, the doll seemed to give the impression of smiling. Maybe it was just the lighting. And maybe she had something to do with Revenant loosing his footing. Either way, the doll had a new owner and was entirely content to unintentionally out her previous one. Her head tipped back, entirely natural because her body was soft and stuffed, but in a sway of curls her head seemed to be facing towards the door that led to the basement of the schoolhouse.

Someone had to help Revenant out, goodness knows he couldn't help himself.

Astraea Pandora

Nevermore dropped back to the floor after a moment or two of making sure some sort of Lovecraft monster or hell beast would not spring from the bowls of the school, which would have been very cool and very disconcerting, and she would have to have a strong talk with Nobel about summoning things in the school like the one about summoning things in the house.

"Down there huh..and I suppose you want me to go don't you?" What the hell, if whatever it was ate her, she and Nobel had a pact that they'd summon the other's spirit to protect them and help them in their works. There was a certain comfort at the idea of being a ghost guardian. She yanked the basement door open.

"Hello...?"

Revenant panicked. Abandon ship, the hull is breached and she's taking in water. There's nothing that can be done but retreat, and oh boy was Revenant going to retreat. He was going to turn right around and run headfirst into those boxes instead of phasing though them. His power had betrayed him, leaving a little colt sitting on his backside and rubbing his snout with a soft 'ooow' because it had hurt. Of course it always went off when he didn't want to fall through something and never would when he needed it in a panic.

With his brain rattled it was a small miracle that his second attempt actually worked, Revenant taking it one hoof at a time to phase into the box pile, hiding himself from his crush at the top of the stairs.

((you forgot a couple so I'll get them!))

"Hellloo..? Ghost? Demon? Void Creature?" A pause. "It's ok, I won't hurt you if you won't hurt me! We could be friends. I like demons, ghosts, and void creatures!" Not that she'd met or seen any but...

"ACHOO" she sniffled, yeesh, dusty. She wish she had Wisp around, a light would be great, but her adjusted eyes told her there wasn't much here anyway. A messy pile of boxes, dust and some cobwebs. She swept some of the cobwebs up with her wing and headed back into the building to put them in her bag.

Revenant: "You like ghosts?" The words were out before the shy colt could really stop himself, rather panicked as Nevermore had turned to head up the stairs. He didn't mean to expose himself, but... well, he hadn't really known if she'd even like his weirdo ability. It certainly wasn't as cool as flying or having two-tone wings. Now that he'd spoken it would only be right to show himself, head shyly peeking out of the box pile.

((and here's where we pick up!))

Nevermore yelped and coiled backwards, her wings fluffed in fright and her body ready to fight before she saw him. A floating head! Oh horse feathers, ghosts were real! Really real! Slowly, slowly she untucked her body and crept closer to what she was assuming was the only part the ghost had. Totally not believing her eyes, Nev slowly raised a hoof and lightly touched the disembodied head on his nose.

Now if Revenant had been of sound mind, he would have made his nose corporeal so she could touch it. Unfortunately his mind was frazzled and scattered, having scared himself rather bad from scaring her, and the filly's hoof passed right through him. It left him slightly cross-eyed and wiggling his nose from the slightly funny sensation that always happened when someone went through him. Nevermore would have just felt a sudden cold spot where she had tried to touch him, while Revenant had felt like a warmth had gone through him.

"Oh- sorry, I'm uh. I'm not scary! I promise you... that..." His words petered out, ears lowered in embarrassment. Here he was talking to the dreamy night princess of his fantasies and all he's done is spook her and stumble all over his own words.

"No no!" Nev said, quickly pulling her hoof backwards. She hadn't expected her hoof to do that and now it felt oddly cold. "I was just...surprised. It's not every day to meet a phony like you. I thought the ghost phonies were just a rumor." she backed up so that the colt could untangle himself from the box pile.

She sat and tilted her head to the side a bit, observing the other. He was a lovely shade of..blue? purple? More purple then anything. His mane was nearly as black as some of the feathers in her wings, but his eyes were summer sky blue. Handsome.

She could see the boxes through him as he moved, it was fascinating! Nev attempted not to stare, but was enchanted by his transparency.

Nevermore's reassurance was met with a shy smile, expression and ears perking up, even daring to step out of the comforting, protective box pile. His glow was more prevalent now that he was no longer mostly hidden, softly shimmering and pulsing all around him, dimly lighting the dark basement. The boxes and whatever else that was behind him was still partially visible, the colors distorted and lines a little blurred, but Revenant was truly translucent.

"Oh, no, we're pretty normal. I, um, think. There's only two of us that are all ghost, my mother End of an Era and myself, but we're like most phonies. Just a tad spookier." The colt sat on the dusty hardwood boards, curly little tail curling around his side. He faltered just a second, gathering his courage before taking a breath and puffing his little chest out.

"But I have heard of you, and seen you before, and your b-beauty and elegance could never be done justice by even the most exquisite words." Not exactly the most smooth of declarations, Revenant was still young and shy after all. Normally he would have been entirely too bashful to be direct, but the need to make sure she knew was overwhelming after Revenant had the misfortune of hearing other children entirely misunderstanding the allure of her unusual features. Being teased over looks was never fun, something the ghostly little colt knew better than most.

Nevermore blinked and her wings fluffed up, the fur along her back rose. Really? Did he really lure her down here just so he could make fun of her?! The filly crouched back a little, coiling up like a baby viper.

"Why are teasing me?" she asked in a low voice. "You're different too! You should understand! Calling me all these nice words, you're just trying to butter me up to make fun of me in front of the other foals or something aren't you?!" She chastised herself for letting her guard down. "I'm not any of those things and you know it!"

Revenant stared at the filly at her outburst, eyes wide. SOS, SOS, the ship is sinking, man the lifeboats.

"No, no!" He shook his head, mind scrambling as he tried to think of how he could prove himself. "Don't you see? I am different too, just as you say. My mama is different and my brothers and sisters are different- so- so I think different is beautiful!" The little colt's head swung around until his frazzled mind finally remembered where his bag was hidden, nosing it open so he could pull a picture out to show Nevermore.

A lovely photo of End of an Era, horn glowing and head tipped as she read one of her favorite books. Revenant carefully set the photo on the floorboards, sitting down behind it.

"See? She's different. She's see-through and glowing, and she's still pretty. You're like that, too. You have two-toned wings, how unique is that? Your stitches are mysterious and cute and your ruffle- well I've never seen anything like it, it makes you look untamed and free. It's amazing. You're amazing." The colt sighed, ears drooping slightly.

"I get it, though. The other foals make fun of me too. My mama always told me they only do it because they don't understand phonies like us. But I wouldn't make fun of you. I wouldn't make fun of anyone." His little nose scrunched up, hesitating on that last one, "Unless they were like... really weird. Phonies that are just... super happy all the time are a little... uh, offputting."

Nevermore kept her eyes on the colt, her expression set to a look of suspicion as he rifled through his bag and pulled out a picture. The filly crept forward a step, peering down at the photograph that had been set out before her. The mare in the picture was indeed, very beautiful and seemed very tranquil. Nev's fur slowly smoothed back and her wings ruffled a bit, feathers sliding back into place.

"She's very beautiful.." she finally said, sitting down across from Revenant on the other side of the picture. She was still a little tense, but at least didn't look like she was going to strike forward and attack. There was heavy pause between the two foals. "Yeah.." Nev finally said, looking up at the ghostly colt. "Those kind of phony are really unnatural. No one is that happy all the time without there being something wrong with them.." She gave him a tiny smile.

The colt smiled, small but true, as Nevermore settled down. He was sad to think that a compliment should be a mistake not to be repeated, because he believed his words true. There had to be another way to put it...

"Yeah, they're... they're like the kind of gardens that have buds all in a row, where the grass is trimmed precisely and everything is kept orderly. And boring. Pretty, but predictable." Revenant's tail swished, eyes lighting up as the only did when he felt a good bit of poetic wording coming on, "But you're not like that. You're a wild rose in a long overgrown garden, untamed and pure- not in innocence, but in truth to nature in it's twisted splendor. Wild things are better, they have mystery and serenity that carefully-organized things can never have. I'm sorry I hurt your feelings, maybe thinking about it this way is easier to understand." Earnest eyes turned towards Nevermore, trying so hard to convey what his heart believed in a better way than just 'beautiful'.

Nevermore's eyes widen and then fell away to the floor shyly. Her cheeks and muzzle took on a dim glow.

"Wow uhm.." her voice broke for a moment and she cleared her throat, "I've..never been called a rose before.." Her right hoof pawed at the floorboard lightly and she looked around helplessly, trying to figure out what to do or say. "Thank you..?" she said quietly and unsure. She wasn't used to this at all and she felt lost as to how to respond. Maybe a compliment as well?

"You.." she started and thought for a moment. "You're like a being from a dream that you see fleetingly out of the corner of your eye but when you try and look at him, he runs away.." It was hardly poetic or particularly complimentary and Nev looked sheepish. "Sorry I'm not poetic like you.."

Revenant's tail swished in pleasure, the colt lit up- in expression, as well as his glow being a tad brighter than normal. He didn't care if his compliments endeared himself to Nevermore, that wasn't his goal at all, he really only cared that the beautiful filly knew she was as pretty as she was smart. No little one should have to go through their lives thinking thoughtless bullies were right about the cruel things they said.

"No, it's wonderful. Thank you for your kind words, they mean a lot to me." Revenant's own cheeks took on a slightly rosy hue. Just because hit wasn't his goal to be endeared doesn't mean he wouldn't disregard friendship if offered. Revenant wasn't really good at making friends. He'd like to think it was because he was graceful and stoic that people were shy to approach, but he knew the opposite was quite true- he was shy to approach others.
