Amaranth stared up at the round moon, in it's full state resembling a pearl nestled in the deep blue of the sky. She was in a contemplative state, letting her thoughts wonder as she gazed up at the luminous orb. It was one of those rare times when she allowed her past to wash over her, a chance to think back, try to understand what happened, and more importantly, what went wrong. She only did this when the moon was full, it was her self imposed limit. Without this boundary, this idea of here and no more, she would be perpetually lost in the past. For some, perhaps, this would not be so bad, but for her the past was pain and many unanswered questions. She shook her head briefly trying to remain focused on the topic of the evening, mainly how she allowed herself to be fooled for so long...

“WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!” She whooped as she dove, racing a random leaf that had been caught on the breeze. There was nothing like flying in the moonlight, when it was too dark to tell the difference between sky and ground, but bright enough to catch shadows. Were they clouds? Or where they trees. There was no way to tell for certain, other than fly into them. It had only taken her flying head first into three trees to learn not to test those particular shadows. Still, there was definitely a thrill to skirting around them without knowing if they’re solid or not. And racing as high as she could go and then folding her wings and dropping? Well, there was little more exciting than figuring out which way was up by plummeting down.

She snapped her wings open again, abruptly stopping her dive, and whooped again as the wind buffeted her and she evened out from her death defying stung. Dad would freak if he could see her know, she knew. Though she did wonder where Aunt Sonja and her sister were. Were they having half as much fun as she was? Probably more. Aunt Sonja always had the most fun.

The sounds that echoed across the sky broke Amaranth from her pensive state. "What could that be?" she wondered aloud, her eyes scanning the skies. She thought she saw a figure dart across the the starry night, blocking out the stars one by one. The creature did not seem malevolent as it moved through the sky. Far from it, the being's movements seemed, jovial and exuberant - the essence of life and freedom, she mused.

Feeling, as she often did, that she was invincible, she pumped her wings harder as she flew straight toward that huge, round orb in the sky. Up and up she went, trying to reach it. Every month, when the moon was this full, it looked so much closer. Every month, she gave in to the temptation to try and fly to it, as if she could brush her fingers against it. This month, she fancied that she made it higher than ever before. But all too soon, she had to fold her wings or suffocate. She plummeted toward the earth….

"Jovial and insane," Amaranth remarked quietly to herself as she saw the form drop rapidly towards the ground. "I do hope it will be alright," she watched the figure with more concern than she expressed and prepared her wings to carry her across the distance if the flyer came out of this situation injured. But for now all she could do was watch and wait.

Idris snapped open her wings at the last possible moment, her hooves skimming the ground. She let out another excited whoop as her wings pounded, fighting to pull her weight back up. She got just high enough to throw off her momentum before dropping to the ground again, this time to land. Her legs collapsed under her, however, unable to support her weight as she gave in to the uncontrollable laughter. There was nothing like surviving a near crash! It was such a rush!

Amaranth found herself staring down at the wind mare. "Are you alright?" she asked tilting her head curiously. She was somewhat doubting this mare's sanity, not that a lack of sanity was an entirely bad trait, only concerning. Which led her back to her initial inquiry. "Are you well?" she repeated gently.

Idris peered up at her, grinning. "That... was.... awesome!" she laughed. "I'm totally fine! Who are you?"

Amaranth laughed softly, relieved that the mare was fine, "I am Amaranth. You are very fortunate. Maneuvers like that would have gotten any number of other soq killed. Clearly your luck is of the highest order."

"Luck? Luck?! HA! That wasn't luck! That was pure skill!" she laughed, rolling over so she could stand. "Luck wouldn't have saved someone who couldn't fly. They totally woulda gone splat!"

"Perhaps," Amaranth conceded. "But even some of the best flyers I've seen would have struggled with the type of moves you pull off. Perhaps you can call it a balance of talent and luck?"

"Sure," she giggled. "We'll call it that. Though you should see my Aunt Sonja. She can FLY! It's amazing!"

Amaranth smiled, "So this type of luck...skill...it runs in the family, huh? Are you all daredevils?" She shook her bangs out of her face, "It must be very exciting, if nothing else."

She giggled. "All? Not at all! Papa is a total stick in the mud. He'll turn these really pretty purple whenever my sister and I go flying. He claims that he was all red, but Aunt Sonja, his sister, made his coat go white." She giggled.
