Name: Ka'Hal (Kay-HAUL)
Race: Wind Earthling (1/4 Ice Earthling)
Gender: Male
Class: Prentice
Future Class: Sentinel
Description: Kay is average height for an Earthling, with pale skin (slightly blue at extremities (like tips of his ears, fingertips, etc.), thanks to a small fraction of Ice blood, but it's so small it probably wouldn't be noticeable unless you really looked). His hair is a bright blonde (yellow), slightly wavy. Cut jaggedly short on one side of his head (around his ears), the other side is slightly longer, falling just past his shoulders and layered. The hair on the bottom is the color of an Ice Earthling's - once they left home Kay dyed the longer part of his hair to exaggerate his mixed heritage. His eyes are blue, but around the pupils there's gold/yellow like Ice Earthlings Example

His crystals have a somewhat rockier texture, but they're pink like a Wind Earthling's, and large, speckled on his shoulders, with smaller teardrop shaped crystals along his collarbones and elbows.
Clothing: Brown pants, with Green leggings underneath. Nothing hugely specific clothing wise, although I think his clothes would be more Orange/Brown inspired, with a bit of yellow and green for accents.
Accessories: Long yellow cloth is tucked through his belt (which is orange) at his left hip, pulled across his chest to hang over his right shoulder. Can be removed and spread to become a larger blanket/shawl.
RP Color: Orange #CC6600

3 Base Traits: Brash, Dependable, Resourceful

Personality: When it comes down to it, Kay's ultimate concern is taking care of those he loves, everything else is secondary. When the safety or livelihood of his family is at stake he'll throw himself into his work and keep his tongue in check, doing everything in his power to accomplish his goals. Kay is fiercely protective of his loved ones, and his ultimate joy is taking care of them in whatever way possible, sometimes sacrificing his own well being for their sake.

Despite this, Kay is also loud and blunt, and even with his loved ones he can come off as rude or noisy. He also has a tendency to make hasty decisions without weighing the consequences fully (such as in the case of leaving home, or dying his hair, it was done in the spur of the moment). Kay is suspicious of people he doesn't know, and while he will never turn away someone in need he will weigh the well being of his companions above those of a stranger.

However, Kay has never been on his own before, without having to look out for someone, so if he was by himself his actions would certainly be different. If he was on his own, he would always choose to help someone in need, and feels incomplete without others to rely on him. In a way it gives him his self worth, and in this way he is just as - maybe more dependent on Aedan than Aedan is on him. On his own Kay is more reckless and acts without regard for his own well being.

Kay has a bad temper at times, which can lead to shouting matches or insults, but he will rarely resort to violence to settle a problem unless it's in self defense.

Born into a nomadic group of the Wind Earthling tribe, Kay was raised to be capable and strong - able to move on from place to place since he was young. Much like any other Wind Earthling, Kay felt content to move from place to place, and didn't harbor any grand ideas or aspirations to become a strong warrior, or merchant, or anything of the sort. He was just happy to take care of his family and move from place to place.

Kay was treated like any other youngling, given praise and support from his family and those in the tribe. Kay's maternal grandfather was an Ice Earthling. So, being mixed herself, Kay's mother (Ka'lani) took in a mixed child as a youngling when his mother passed away, feeling sympathy for him when many others were suspicious. From that moment, Kay took this fellow youngling, Aedan, under his wing and the two became inseparable.

Living in their own little worlds most of the time, Kay could almost ignore the way Aedan was treated - until they got older.

As time passed Kay realized that his treatment of Aedan was unique among the tribe. While not outright cruel or hateful to him, the members of the tribe had trouble accepting the young boy. His Shifter heritage was stranger to the tribe than Ice, so Aedan was often excluded and blamed for any ill fortune the nomadic tribe ran into.

By the time they became Prentices, Kay could no longer ignore what this treatment had done to his gentle friend, and so one night when Aedan was pushed past the breaking point and begged to leave (perhaps expecting to be calmed until the moment passed), Kay agreed and the two stole away into the night, deciding to travel away from Sauti and into more unfamiliar territory - perhaps to find a more accepting place.

But no matter what, Kay can't let Aedan know how heavily the guilt weighs on him abandoning his family in the heat of the moment. He's helping his best friend, and he could never imagine abandoning him or letting him suffer a moment longer, and yet... and yet.

Other Notes:
Traveling with the same earthlings for his entire life left Kay feeling close to his entire tribe, and even while being on his best behavior he's not exactly 'polite' - it's something they're used to, and it doesn't affect them anymore.

It eats him up inside that while he wants to protect Aedan from being ostracized, he still respects his fellow tribesmen and at most would make reluctant jabs at them when they treated Aedan wrongly. When it comes to his tribe, Kay spent years internalizing this guilt about his inaction - and that other than a few mutinous glowers and jabs at the other Wind Earthlings, he hasn't done much to help Aedan's situation (other than be supportive and hope things turn out for the best). So he can hold his tongue, but only when it comes to his own family/tribe - now that Kay is out in the real world, anyone treating Aedan the same way will probably get chewed out or at the very least threatened.

The decision to finally leave was taken because of the aforementioned guilt. He spent years feeling useless, like he couldn't help Aedan, and guilty that Aedan depended on him when Kay couldn't even open his mouth to scold his family/tribe about their behavior. So in a rush, the sudden prospect of being able to help Aedan somehow - mixed with pent up resentment of the tribe for this one issue came to a head. They're Wind Earthlings so they travel light anyway, so they left within the next few hours and by the time that righteous indignation calmed down they were far away, and Aedan was already showing signs of happiness and relief at leaving. For Kay he felt this was too late to turn back.

He doesn't handle abandoning his family well. Kay tries to put a cheery face on for Aedan, but it'll come to a head eventually.

Ka'Lani(mother): Ka'Hal's mother. Ka'Lani's father was an Ice Earthling, although he didn't stay in the family. Every now and again the tribe travels close to where he lives, but Ka'Lani never really knew him and he was happy to keep his distance from the family in turn. Ka'Lani is a gentle woman, nurturing to her son, and not outright cruel - but she could never quite see the youngling she adopted, Aedan, as her son. Nevertheless, she does take care of him, as best she can.

If the tribe had their way they would have dropped Aedan with another tribe, if given the chance, but Ka'Lani insisted they keep him close. She felt a personal responsibility for his well being, and her son's closeness with Aedan. Because of her insistance on keeping Aedan in the tribe, she and Kay have been pushed away somewhat by the tribe.

Ka'Hal's Tribe: This group is rather small, compared to other Wind tribes that travel Sauti. They used to be a rather large group, with upwards of 40 people traveling all together with animals and trading goods. But times have been hard. Inexplicably, more monster attacks have occurred, more strangers (non Wind earthlings) have been seen traveling Sauti, and illness has swept through the tribe.

What really is simply bad timing and interspecies friction found a scapegoat when a pregnant wind woman, named Elana, begged to join the group. For a tribe that was normally very close knit, suspicious of any outsider, it a lot for them to accept the woman into their group. So when she gave birth to a 'stranger', some non-Wind child, it was seen as a personal insult. Suddenly the rash of illnesses, disagreements with trade partners, and monsters seemed more a punishment for betraying their ideals than just random happenstance.

Even after Elana died, her son, Aedan, was often to blame for anything that went wrong.

Despite this traditionalist cruelty, Ka'Hal's tribe is fiercely loyal to those they see as their own, and Kay was raised to appreciate the bonds of family and unity within the tribe. On your own, you're nothing - a single thread is frail, but woven together threads make something unbreakable. This one tenet of life greatly influenced Kay's personality as he grew.

Aedan: Kay's best friend, the closest person he has. They're childhood friends, they grew up together. Aedan knows more about Kay than even Kay does, and it was because of this gentle soul that Kay left home to travel around Tendaji.
