The word had spread like wildfire in Zena: a search had been put out. A call to all entertainers in the land was announced earlier in the day to anyone who would listen. The Zenan council in Zidel is to have a banquet and the need for festivities had arrived. The youngling boy who had delivered the news bundled in furs had receded back to Zidel already, having finished his task and was to report back. He had left a stack of information papers about time and date and ad placed them at all of the inns nearby and into eager hands.

In three days time, there would be auditions to see who would participate, and only the skilled needed to apply. Already the buzz was spreading and many would participate. Only a handful would be chosen.

Part 1: The Announcement

Senja was lazing about Rastian’s family’s house. Ete had recovered from her chills and was feeling much better... proven by her very annoyed chatter directed at the male Sprite who was doing his best to take care of her. Senja smiled as she watched them. She lazily kicked a foot in the air as she lay on her stomach on the comfy couch. What to do? She should head back to the Troupe; they were probably worried about her disappearance. But she didn’t feel like leaving, if she did it would mean leaving Rastian. She sighed and rolled on to her back to stare up at the ceiling. Duty or her feelings?
Bother this, she thought as she scrunched her nose in irritation. All this lazing about is giving me too much time to think! Grabbing the thicker coat Rastian had loaned her, she headed outside to go tend to Shilea. Her mammu welcomed the attention, getting her coat brushed was a pleasure. Senja had just finished when she heard someone approaching. She walked to the other side of Shilea and called out a greeting to the young boy approaching. Bundled in furs, the poor thing looked chilled, Senja offered to let him warm himself b the fire (despite it not being her house... but no one else was home and the kid looked cold!).

"No, I’ve gotta deliver all these before sun down. Can you take some and share it with people if they come by?” He offered a few sheets of parchment to her.

“Sure,” she accepted, taking the sheets.

“Thank you,” he said as he trotted of.

“What’s the big rush?” She muttered to herself as she watched him leave. Looking down she read what she’d accepted. A grin appeared as she saw what it said.

“A contest! There’s a contest for musicians and dancers!”
She crowed happily, something to do while she waited for Rastian to return from whatever healing thingy he was doing. It would be fun, she could watch and maybe learn some new moves and music, and there was a chance at performing for the Zenan council! Perfect!

Later that night, she told the people she was staying with her plans and asked for directions. They offered to do slightly better; they’d take her to the nearest village and she could go from there with others who were bound to have heard about it as well.

Part 2: The Contest

Senja pulled back her hood and shook out her short hair as she looked the huge gathering below her. She was perched on her Mammu with Ete sitting on her shoulder, wrapped in a mini warm fur blanket. They’d traveled with a bunch of other contestants here, offering to help carry the heavier gear on her mammu. Tomorrow was the day of the contest, though it looked like the place was a festival not a contest! She smiled as she heard strains of music reach her ears. She knew what she would be performing, and was looking forward to seeing others.
What mattered more to her than winning was the experience. She was here to see, possibly learn, and maybe win.

After she’d set up a small tent with the group she’d traveled with, she set about to wandering, checking out the competition and seeing what she could. As she drifted about, gossiping with people, watching people practice and visiting the small impromptu market that had sprung up, he noticed that while there were other’s her age here, most of them weren’t here to participate, instead they were there to watch their friends, teachers, and cheer them on. They people here were mostly Ice and WInd tribe with a few Leaf members. She hadn’t spotted an Alkidike or other shifter yet. Which made since this place was all the way out here and frozen! What sane person would come here? Well, I would. She thought with a smile as she headed back to her tent for one last run over her performance before she bedded down. My dance will be different than others since it’s a Shifter dance, but that didn’t mean it would be a success. After all, different people had different tastes.

The next day she sat about and waited her turn. Cheering on others and enjoying all the different dances and music she heard. There were quite a bit of drums accompanying the dancers. I wonder if that’s a cultural preference? She thought, makes it easy to hear the beat, but I have to admit after a while the beats kinda stream together. Hopefully my performance stands out enough!

Finally her number was called. Grinning she grabbed her pipes and skipped to the stage. She told the musicians that she’d be dancing and providing her own music as well. They grinned and sat back to enjoy the show with the best seats in the house. Senja tossed aside her thick winter layers to show off her dancing veils; sheer, skimpy and definitely chilly. But she’d practiced in the cold and knew she would be fine for her dance. Much longer though and it’d be chancy. Around her ankles were belled jangles that glittered gold in the light. Her dance and music was a piece her father had written and choreographed for her. It was fast paced, upbeat with a light tone to it. He called it the Sprite song, mostly because the moves were based off of watching sprites flitter about.

She waited until the judges gave the signal to start, then lifted her pipes to her lips. The song started out slow with a sweet trilling call. She began to sway as she slowly breathed out quiet and gentle notes, than her feet began to tap, creating a jingling counterpoint to her pipes. Soon the slow beat speed up, and Senja began to move, her feet flashed about, always moving and jiggling as she danced lightly about the stage. Her veils danced with her as well, billowing out then twisting in as she twirled. Her fingers danced across her many chambered pipe, singing out a sweet invigorating song that brought to mind spring sunlight dancing through the jungle boughs. Senja ended her fast paced dance with a sudden stop that caused the veils to waft about and settle slowly as she gave descending trills on her pips. Turned back to face the audience and grinned as she gave a bow. She liked to think that the applause and cheers were slightly louder, but that may have been her ego speaking.
She hurried to rewrap herself in the furs and went back into the audience to wait out the rest of the day’s performances and see who got chosen.

Part 3: The Results and Banquet

By nightfall everyone had performed and people buzzed about who they thought should win, who had done really well but were missing something, or how they would have danced that dance better or wouldn’t have messed up on that trill. Senja rolled her eyes at these last ones, apparently there were people who thought they could always do better than others! The judges motioned for silence, which took a while to come as there were plenty of people who just had to keep on talking. But eventually the crowd grew quiet and one of the judges, a tall bulky male with a deep bass voice, stepped forward.

“Today you have all performed beautifully. Too beautifully as we have found too many we wish to perform at the banquet!”

The crowd chuckled at this, it had indeed been a wonderful day filled with excellent acts! Those who had performed could (for the most part) leave knowing they had done and excellent job… And maybe get an offer of employment from the business and troupe members who had come to check out the skills and maybe find performers to add to their groups.

“Tonight we will willow down the acts until we have the 5. We will announce it at dawn!”

At this the crowd broke p to go and rest up, chat, and enjoy the mini festival that was going on. Senja found the group she’d traveled here with and fell to talking about dances. She and an older Ice woman began trading steps. Senja had absolutely adored her dance, it’d been slow, sensual, and yet fiery. The woman, Orelia, had wanted to know some of her lighter swifter steps. To add to her collection, but mostly to teach her young daughter who could pull off spritely dances a bit better. In fact, that’s who most the night went. As the majority of them had napped during the day, they were wide awake and ready to party the evening away! Senja managed to corner a few musicians and get them to teach her how to use some of the odder instruments she’d seen and couldn’t wait to get her hands on.

The moon had already risen and set and Senja finally felt the day catch up with her. As she wandered back to her tent she thought on something that had occurred to her earlier. She’d enjoyed her dancing, also sharing dancing steps and moves. But what she’d really loved more had been the music. She loved making music and seeing others move to it, or dancing to it her self. She gave Shilea a rub down and made sure her Mammu had enough food before heading in. Did she want to focus on dancing or music? She’d been asked that a lot tonight. By splitting her attention and practice time, she was keeping herself from achieving the best she could in one or the other. Or at least, they’d told her that. Maybe it was true... but she liked both! She sighed as she snuggled down to sleep. I’ll think on it later.

Horns blaring woke her up. She looked outside and saw that it was a little past dawn.

“The announcement! I hope I didn’t oversleep!” She gasped as she grabbed a set of clothes and ran out combing her hair. She grinned and waved at the others who had also overslept like her.
She reached the crowd right as she heard her name called.
“... and the last of the performers we will be asking to attend is the shifter girl Senja! Will those we called please come here to get more information!”

Ete chattered happily, of course her Senja had been chosen! Anyone could tell that any dance meant to honor the sprites was best!

Senja hopped from foot to foot happily as she waited for the crowd to disperse. Oh this was going to be the best! Rastian would be so surprised! ... Niadra too. She added as an after thought with a smile. Amazing how a guy could make one almost forget a friend!

Later that day, she and the other winners set out with the judges to Zidel. On the way over they discussed who would be performing what and in what order. Senja was to do a repeat of her sprite dance as well as two more performances. She decided to do a musical piece as well as just a dance with others playing the music. That would allow for her to show the people a variety of Shifter dances and music.

The day of the banquet arrived and all was ready. Other than the usual last minute panics, everything went off as planned. She and the other dancers put forth their best effort and it showed! From a slow group dance to Senja’s sprite dance, pounding drums to delicate and angelic wind and harp music, sultry to innocent. They performed all of them, in a way that each dance led to the next piece, each group got a rest before they went again. Tonight was a night to remembered.

Senja sat exhausted off to the side, sipping a cider as she watched the last musical piece. I wish my family could see me now, plus my friends! I know my parents would be so proud and Da happy the dance me made for me was so well received! I’ll have to send a letter home telling them this.
