Dragon Hatching Etiquette & Impression

NPC Clutches & Hatchings
Not all Flights will result in “In Game” Hatchings, some Hatchings will be OOC. How "NPC Hatchings" are run is that when it comes time for the Hatching there will be one big post summing up the Hatching and all dragons and riders become NPCs.

Activity works best
There is no post requirement, but anyone who has a Candidate should at least stay active close to the time of a Hatching. This does not mean your Candidate automatically Impresses. This is for the Staff to get a good look at your Candidate to best match them with the right Dragon (be it color, name, and basic personality). Those who continue to be active gives one a higher chance of Impressing.

Hatching Etiquette Rules
These rules were created for a reason. Queens are very protective and temperamental over their clutch, even more so when she has a golden egg on the sands. Do not question, do not challenge the will of the Mothering Queen. If her Rider or the Candidatemaster say to back off, you BACK OFF. Be respectful, be polite and you may walk out in one piece.

Hidden stands Impression
Impression from the Stands has only happen a handful of times. Because of such rarity this is a “buy only” item. That means the only way you will Impress from the Stands is by buying the item in the store.

Queens are rare
Yes, generally a Pern roleplay is made up a large amount of female Members. And said Members lean towards making girls over boys. Queens are going to be rare. If you make a girl, they may Impress a Red or Green if you are going for a female Dragon to go with your female Candidate. As such if anyone does Impress Queen, it is because they are active and they have shown they deserve her.

Extra Impressions
As stated with Hatchings, during a PC Hatching there might be some eggs who do not hatch. Duds are a natural thing in all egg laying creatures. We also have NPC Impressions. These NPCs may help to keep the color ratio in the clutch canon or even have a purpose later on. Some of our Hatchlings may even go between, do not be surprised if this happens. Dragons deemed adoptable will be up for the taking of anyone who did not Impress but liked a certain dragon.

General Detail

The dragons of Pern were created by the original colonists, using fire-dragonets as a genetic template, and utilizing the Eridani technique to craft them into the creatures needed to provide Pern's aerial defense.

Dragons hatch hungry, but more importantly with the need to bond with a human, who will become a Dragonrider. The mental bond that forms between young dragon and human is known as Impression, and lasts for at least as long as the dragon is alive. While a human may survive after the death of their draconic partner, albeit with great mental suffering, a dragon cannot survive the death of its human, gravely illustrating dragonkind's dependence on mankind.

The eighteen months between a dragon's hatching and it reaching adulthood (and full growth) are devoted to intensive training not unlike that of Earth's military. Dragon and rider pairs have a duty to protect Pern from Thread, and they must be prepared to face incredible danger.

Anatomy

Pernese dragons have four legs, and two wings. They have a smooth leathery skin without scales that is commonly referred to as hide. Hide comes in five base colors; green, blue, brown, bronze and gold, of which green and gold are female, while bronze, brown and blue are all male; they will never cross-gender (eg, a female blue, or male gold). The shop currently also has copper sub queens and the reds.

Eyes
A dragon's eyes are compounded and faceted like that of an earthen fly, and appear to 'swirl' through various colors which echo the dragon's mood. The faster the swirling of colors, the stronger the emotion the dragon is feeling. Eyes seem to whirl with emotion, the faster the motion the stronger the emotion.

Blue/Green: Contentment
Yellow: Fear
Reddish Yellow: Battle
Red/Orange: Anger
Red: Hunger
Lavender: Stress
Purple: Mating Lust
White: Danger
Grey: Pain
Rainbow: Agtitation

Sounds
Bellow: Alarm, irritation, calling for attention
Humming: Hatching
Moan: Distress, anxiety
Squeal: Fear, surprise
Warble: Complacent, gratitude
Whimper: Deep sadness
Roar: Anger, confusion, pain
Bugle: Joy, triumph, happiness, Challenge (when rising) greeting, information, joy
Trill: Curiosity, pleasure or enjoyment, satisfaction
Chirp: Confusion or embarrassment
Croon : Love, affection, pleasure, reassurance, apology
Bark: Surprise, astonishment
Mew: Sadness, hunger
Keen: Death of a human, dragon, or other
Wail: Sadness, worry
Gurgle: Calmness or enjoyment
Rumble : Amusement or happiness, draconic equivalent of a laugh
Grumble (or mumble) : Minor annoyance or frustration
Growl : Anger, warning
Purr : content, assured, happy

Intelligence
Dragons are a relatively intelligent creature, and like other animals, some are smarter than others - a fact that does not necessarily rely on the colour of a dragon's hide though the percentage of smart golds to smart greens often looks higher, as there is a larger number of greens available, offering a larger percentage to be of lower intelligence - and stupid golds tend to be over looked.

Telepathy
This is the power dragonkind use in order to Bond with their chosen candidate, at the time of Impression. It allows them to link minds and speak on a mental level with not only their lifemate, but also fellow dragons and other humans. As a Hatchling, the dragonet's voice is considered 'loud' and can often be heard by other dragons and their riders. As they grow, they will learn to control their voice. Most commonly, a dragon will only speak to his or her lifemate, and possibly their Weyrmate or extremely close friends or relatives. It is not, however, unusual to have dragons that are loud, or simply bespeak whomever they please.

Teleportation
Commonly referred to as between-ing, the ability to teleport is of vital importance to a dragon, and is a skill taught to them in their second year. The use of the teleportation skill will carry a dragon, and any passengers it may have, through a blackness known as between which is extremely cold. The transition lasts for approximately five-seven seconds.

Flaming
Dragons were created first and foremost for the purpose of fighting Threadfall. The Pernese dragon is not capable of breathing fire without learning first how to chew Firestone. Firestone is a type of rock mined on Pern, that when fed to the dragon, mixes with gases in their second stomach that allows them to breathe fire.

Hear All Dragons

Level 1
Like Robinton any Character who has this level of HAD is able to catch random mind speech of any Dragon within the immediate vicinity. Dragons, Whers, and flitts will have a mild affinity towards the Character and would be more willing to speak to them outside of their Rider. This also means that a Character can not hear private conversations that a Dragon masks.

Level 2
Like Aramina (The Girl Who Heard Dragons) any Character who has this level of HAD is able to hear the mind speech of any dragon within the immediate vicinity. If the Dragon happens to notice they will be able to mask their conversation for privacy. Allowing the HAD to be able to contact and call Dragons from a distance away. Dragons, Whers, and Flitts will have an affinity towards the Character. Both Dragons and Whers will be more willing to speak to them outside of their Rider. If the Character overtax themselves they will be subjugated to major headaches though not enough to be bedridden.

Level 3
Like Lessa or Brekke, Dragons, flitts, and Whers seem to have an innate attraction to this Character, unless they become practiced at hiding themselves. HADs of this level can hear all Dragons and Whers, even private conversations. Their ability to contact or call a Dragon or Wher is a lot farther than Level 2s. They have the ability to exert some control over Dragons or Whers but the Dragon has the ability to willingly ignore them if they choose. If the Character overtax themselves, they will be subjugated to debilitating migraines that can leave them bedridden for a day or two. Unlike Level 1 or 2, a Level 3 must work to block the voices of Dragon or Wher.

Color Information

User Image

Gold
Gold dragons also known as Queens, are the largest and strongest in a Weyr. They are also among the rarest color of Dragon on Pern. Only a Gold or very rarely a Copper can mother another Gold. Golds can command all the dragon colors but another Gold, though they will obey the Senior Gold. Golds are unable to ingest firestone and produce flame, instead they fly in a wing below all the others during threadfall, their Riders wielding flamethrowers. If a Gold is not guarding a clutch she will fly falls.

Length: 130 – 150 Feet
Clutch Size: 10 – 30 eggs
Gender: Female
Impresses: Females

User Image

Copper
Copper Dragons also known as Queens, are actually sub-Queens, they range between the size of an average Bronze to an average Gold. They are as rare if not a bit rarer then Golds and have the same ability to command all the dragon colors but another Gold or Copper, though they will obey the Senior Copper if there is no Senior Gold. A Copper can become Senior Queen but they are only Regent until a Gold is born, for a Gold will never obey a Senior Copper. Coppers are also unable to ingest firestone and produce flame, instead they fly in a wing below all the others during threadfall, their Riders wielding flamethrowers. If a Copper is not guarding a clutch she will fly falls.

Length: 125 – 145 Feet
Clutch Size: 5 – 20 eggs
Gender: Female
Impresses: Females & Males

User Image

Bronze
Bronze dragons are the largest and strongest male in a Weyr. It is they who commonly become the co-leader to any Gold or Copper, as well as having the honor of commonly flying the two Queen colors. Any Rider of a Bronze may easily find themselves in the position of Weyrleader or Wingleader, it is the Bronzes who have the ability to command all the colors other than the Queens or another Bronze, though they will obey the Weyrleader's Dragon. They are as muscular and as thick as the Queens though smaller in size, it may not make them fast or agile dragons but it does allow them to have the stamina to catch the Queens. They are able to ingest firestone and produce flame, fighting thread often in the higher wings, their stamina is such that it allows them to last through an entire fall. Bronzes can also chase and catch the smaller females but because of how quick the smaller females are as well as the smaller males, they have a hard time catching them.

Length: 120 – 140 Feet
Chases: All Female Colors
Gender: Male
Impresses: Males

User Image

Brown
Brown dragons are the first of the non-metallic hued colored dragons. They are more common than Bronzes though they still are not as numerous as Blues to Greens. It is they who co-lead to the larger males and can command any color below them other than another Brown, it is rare that a Rider of a Brown will find himself in the Weyrleader position and if he does his Dragon will have a slightly hard time commanding the other Bronzes, though any Brown and below will listen. Slightly less rare but still the same is a Brown who finds himself in the position of Wingleader, normally a Brown will easily find themselves in the position of Wingsecond or Wingthird to help lead a Wing through fall. Browns are able to chase the Queens but do not have the stamina like Bronzes to keep up, thus rarely do they ever win. More commonly they will chase the other female colors with more success. They are able to ingest firestone and produce flame, fighting thread often in the higher wings, their stamina is such that it allows them to last through most of a fall.

Length: 110 – 120 Feet
Chases: Golds & Coppers – Rarely to Uncommon || Reds & Greens – Commonly
Gender: Male
Impresses: Males & Females

User Image

Blue:
Blue dragons are the smallest males in a Weyr and the most numerous. Blues like Reds and Greens are the fighters of the Weyr, they are able to ingest firestone and produce flame, being placed in all the Wings though they do have to trade out with other Blues during a fall for they do not have the stamina to last an entire fall. Many are held back in the reserves, but they can out fly the larger males. A Blue many never find themselves in position of Wingleader (though it has been said any color can lead a Wing), very rarely will they even find themselves in the position of Wingsecond or Wingthird. Most commonly they are just one of the many in a Wing. Blues have an amazing sensitivity during the time a clutch is present to search out Candidates. It is they who lead Searches and they who bring back sought after Candidates. Blues are only able to truly command Reds or Greens, depending on their current position or what position they are put in may a Blue able to command another Blue. Though they are slim in build and very agile and quick fliers they do not have the stamina to even think about chasing any of the Queens, Blues tend to stick with Reds and Greens.

Length: 100 – 110 Feet
Chases: Reds & Greens
Gender: Male
Impresses: Males & Females

User Image

Red
Reds are an off shoot of Blues as Coppers are to Golds, they have the same commanding abilities as Blues and position in a Wing. They are also very slim and fast flies though can not last throughout a full fall. They range in size between an average Blue to an average Green, and yet unlike Blues they only come as females. This is where they are more like Greens for they are also sterile and able to ingest firestone and produce flame. They are as numerous if a bit rarer than Blues and Greens, helping to make up a majority of a Wing.

Length: 95 – 105 Feet
Clutch Size: Sterile || 0 – 5 eggs (With clutching ability)
Gender: Female
Impresses: Females

User Image

Green:
Green dragons are the smallest females in a Weyr and the most numerous. Greens like the other fighter colors are able to ingest firestone and produce flame, as females they are sterile like Reds. Unlike Blues and Reds, a Green has no commanding ability over any color, some can be a little more dominate than another Green otherwise they have no commanding ability. They are placed within all the Wings though they do have to trade out with other Greens during a fall for they do not have the stamina to last an entire fall. Many are held back in the reserves, but they can out fly the larger dragons. Sadly a Green is purely a fighter, for they are the smallest and quickest, rarely are they hit by thread unlike the larger dragons. As the smallest of females Greens can be chased by any of the male colors though rarely caught by Bronzes, uncommonly by Browns, and very easily by Blues.

Length: 90 – 100 Feet
Clutch Size: Sterile || 0 – 5 eggs (With clutching ability)
Gender: Female
Impresses: Females & Males

Mating Flight Etiquette

Mating flights are simple in concept. When a female rises, their hides tends to brighten. Sort of a “glow” like affect. They will then “blood”, before shooting into the sky. Once this happens all the males in the area will rise and chase. For Queens this will be Bronzes and rare Brown. For Non-Queens this would be from Bronzes to Blues. The female will lead the group in a chase till one of the males catches her. For Dragons, when the senior Queen rises, it is this that decides on the Weyrleader.

ICly a dragon does not “choose”, she is “caught”, OOCly the owner may decide who the winner is or roll. Listed below is an easy setup if you are curious on how we go about flights.

- The owner of the female dragon will PM staff (Unless Weyrwoman's/Regent's Queen) with their choice to either have a predetermined winner or use the dice game.
- The male who won is allowed to “catch” the female, and end the flight.
- To know who has won, the player hosting the flight can put in an OOC text the winner after the fade to black. Or even PM the winner.

Choice not a Rule
Mating Flights are a CHOICE, not a RULE. Any player has the right to not play out any Mating Flight if they are uncomfortable playing that aspect of Pern. The Staff respects this and are okay with this 100% We want our players to have fun, not be uncomfortable.

Consent
The age of consent is 18 Turns, however a player needs to be completely O.K. with any plots that happen during a flight. Whether this be dragons fighting each other, injuries, and when characters get together under the sheets. We do not want to see any rape plots in the shop, ever. A lot of people are not only uncomfortable with the idea of rape but it can also be a trigger for others.

Appropriate Age
Contrary to what happens in the books (underage sex) there is a very stern rule that will be followed here. We have put the age of consent at 18 Turns old for the shop. This means that if you have a character that is under the age of 18 Turns they will not be allowed to have any sexual interaction whatsoever. This also applies to mating flights, your Dragon will be asexual until their Rider is of age.

Pregnant Riders
Any Rider who is pregnant will not be entering in any mating flight. The Dragon will for the term of the pregnancy be asexual. There are no exceptions.

Flight Description
Flights are dangerous, there will be teeth, claws and blood involved. We do not want people to go into great detail about these things, let’s remember that Gaia is a PG-13 website and large descriptions of violence and gore are not acceptable. That being said, detailing sexual activities is also frowned upon. Use a fade to black because detailing these things are not appropriate and no one wants to read them.
