Iphis yawned and stretched, the cheerful light of dawn disturbing him from his sleep. Drowsy still, the young stallion blinked blearily at the shining sun, and fought the desire to go back to sleep. It wasn't comfortable on the rocky ground but it had been the most sheltered spot with the small cliff face at his back. The soft grass of the open field above the short, stony drop he'd sheltered against had been tempting, but he knew better than to sleep in such an exposed spot... especially when he was all alone.

That was a sobering thought, not that the small stallion had needed sobering. Alone. He really, truly, was all alone. Quietly he crept to his feet, staring down at the golden talons at the end of his forelimbs. All the others had hooves. Even his mother. Most had split hooves, dainty and delicate, but some had the broader, wider ones that ended his hind legs. None of them had talons though. Maybe because none of them were monsters.

Swallowing, the small stallion shook himself briskly. They weren't here. They were all still safe and sound at home. Except for mother, but... but... well, maybe she was happy wherever it was such kind, loving beings went after this. If they even went anywhere. How would anyone know? Maybe they were still attached to their body and it was just not moving anymore. Maybe they felt the earth swallow them up, or some nasty predator shred and eat them- Iphis choked, gagging slightly, and hastened to direct his thoughts somewhere, anywhere else. He did not want to think about how it must feel to be mauled apart and eaten. He already knew it must be horrible, he already knew doing such a terrible thing was wrong. What did it matter if he thought about it again? He'd only get sick again and then he'd be hungrier again and that... that would be bad.

Briskly, he bounded up onto the soft grass again with a helpful flap of wings, settling himself comfortably by the small gorge he'd slept in. Oh, oh ick, his feathers were all dusty! That wouldn't do! Talons may have made him evil, but wings were supposed to be a blessing. They were something else no one in his herd had, but others who had passed on had occasionally been blessed with wings. Angeni were sacred creatures, and a foal born with even just this tiny hint of their likeness was a lucky omen indeed. Sure, there were winds and flutters and other kinds soquili that bore wings, but his unknown father could have been one of those great creatures. No one knew for sure except his mother, and she never told him before... before.

Of course, he knew better. No angeni, or even just a decent soquili, would ever do what he had done. What he still did. But that didn't make the wings any less special. Soft and cream with warm, sunny yellow at the tips... they were so pretty. They didn't look evil. They looked bright. Maybe even a little heavenly, like sunshine through clouds. Slightly calmed now that his mind was on clouds and fortunes, Iphis began to very carefully groom his wings. It was a painstakingly precise process, they were his one redeeming feature and he wanted them to really look the part...

Kumiho sniffed about the grass, her nose and ears focused on finding prey. Hunting in her feral form meant that she would be lucky to nab anything bigger than a rabbit; but she was much more efficient this way. Plus, a nice helpful side effect was the fact that any Soquili she encountered didn't automatically run in terror. Sometimes that feeling was empowering, but it made it harder to play.

On this particular day, Kumiho noticed a preening harpy-thing. He looked plain enough... a lovely gold and cream color. Her ears perked with interest and she made her way over, concealing herself in the underbrush. He was preening his wings like some kind of lumbering peacock....

When she got close enough, she let herself be seen. With a gleaming, silvery coat and big, golden eyes; she could make herself look quite adorable if she really tried. "Hello..." she ventured, plastering on a smile. It was time to see what was up with this fellow...

It's okay, I understand about things being busy. Sorry I didn't notice for so long, I JUST got the quote notification today for some reason...

For all his careful thoughts and considerations as to what might lead him into trouble, Iphis was certainly not paying his surroundings attention as closely he should have. Sleeping out in the open was bad, but sitting there fixing his wings was, apparently, just fine. He knew the surival basics, he just failed to apply them properly. It didn't help that he'd never needed to before, he'd always been able to rely on his herd to help him. But he wasn't a foal anymore, and they weren't with him anymore.

He should not have been startled by the little fox's arrival, but he was. He hadn't heard anyone, or noticed a presence, and the sudden voice surprised an awkward half-flap of his wings out of him. He couldn't really fly, no one else in his herd still had wings when he'd been born, but instinct had the basics covered there too. Flap a lot and really hard and a little bit of a boost could be given to a jump, or a short fall could be made into a slow glide. Taking to the skies, really soring like a bird, that seemed to be beyond his reach. Maybe if he had some sort of teacher he could change that, maybe now that he was out and traveling he might even find one!

“Oh, hello there,” he greeted the little silver... was it a fox? He'd never seen one with so many tails... oh, oh no, one of them looked like it had been bitten off. Poor thing! He didn't want to imagine how much that must have hurt, and he shuddered to think of how many creatures he'd bitten into. Not this fox though, he didn't need to feel guilt over her. “Sorry, you startled me,” Iphis admitted, slowly managing a smile. He hadn't killed anything lately, maybe he was getting better at not being hungry enough to hurt any poor innocent creatures. He should not feel guilty and sad and awful, he hadn't done anything... yet. “I guess I wasn't really paying attention. Are you alright?” Iphis wasn't entirely sure why else anyone would talk to something like him, even with the lovely deception of his wings, but even though he was probably the least likely candidate he would still try to help if she needed it.

"Oh, I'm sorry... I didn't mean to frighten you," she lied. Well, this should be easy... she thought to herself. It he was that easy to startle, he must have had a pretty easy life. Or at least was an avid daydreamer. Both were traits she would be happy to manipulate for him.

She followed his eyes as he asked if she was alright, and looked back at her mangled tail. Everytime she saw the wrecked thing, a hot, burning hatred swelled up in her chest, and she almost ripped the golden peacock's throat out right then and there!!

BUT! She managed to contain herself. With little more than a twitch she swallowed down her vile and hate and kept going on with her ruse. "Oh... my tail?" she asked, frowning. "Oh, its healed over now," she said, patting it with her paws, looking on the brink of tears. "Some horrible monster tried to eat me... I barely got away with my life. But look what it did..." She covered her eyes with her paws in distraught. "And now I'm hideous, I'm sorry!"

“What? Oh, no, I didn't mean anything like that!” Iphis tried to assure the small fox as she covered her eyes with her paws. He saw the small twitch, but only interpreted it as surprise or pain. It made him feel sicker. Of course she would be upset about it, he shouldn't have stared at the scar. It was just a reminder of almost being eaten... nothing wanted to be eaten, to die. He hadn't done it to her, but... but... “I was only worried,” he explained, “So long as you're alright that's what's important, right? And... and you've still got more tails than any other creature I've seen, and they're really very lovely.” Was he making this worse? He sort of felt like he wasn't saying the right things, but he had no idea what to say. What could anyone say to that? He was sorry she'd almost been eaten, and glad she seemed to be mostly okay? That she was still far from 'hideous' even with the missing piece of tail? Had he already said that? He'd said something like that, right? Or should he keep talking- no, no, babbling at her would definitely make it worse.

“I'm pretty big, well, I'm actually sort of small for a cerynei, but I'm big for a fox. Maybe it'd make you feel any safer, you could stay with me a while? I promise not to eat you.” As far as fighting monsters went... he wasn't sure how well he'd do. He'd never tried to fight something bigger or fiercer than a rabbit really... which made him a monster too. But she didn't need to know that, and maybe having a monster keeping an eye out for her might help?

"That's so very kind of you..." Kumiho said, looking back up at him, putting her paws back down on the ground. "I guess having someone big and strong to protect me would be so nice."

A wave of anger swelled in her chest... like some kind of perversion with the relationship she had with Cerberus. She didn't need or want his damned protection, and part of her just wanted to turn and leave right now.

But on second paw, perhaps she could use this to her advantage somehow. Let this go down the way it should have gone down when Cerberus. Make him pay. Make him remember.

"Yes... yes, I think that would be very nice indeed..."

The more he thought about it, the more Iphis began to worry that this was a bad idea. What if he lost his will again? He wouldn't hurt her, he wasn't that out of control, but it would be so hard to hide... maybe that wasn't a bad thing. Maybe having someone else's eyes on him again, just as his herd's had been, would give him more insensitive to ignore the cravings for bloody meat. It hadn't stopped him before though, he was ashamed to admit even the opinions of those he loved had not been enough to keep him from behaving like a monster. He tried, but... but it just hadn't been enough.

But maybe she could help keep him at least a little more honest. Maybe she could help him stay a little more good. Even if he was only a little less a monster, surely it was better than being as bad and awful as his stomach wanted him to be. Killing poor, innocent creatures for food... it was just... it was so wrong, especially when normal Soquili, cerynei like he was supposed to be, didn't. He was supposed to eat plants! All the others did. All of them. Iphis was the only one who wanted to kill things, the only one who ate helpless little animals. But maybe he could still change. Someone to keep an eye on him, maybe this time it would be enough... and maybe he could make up for all the bad things he did by helping to protect this sweet little fox from meeting the same fate he'd inflicted on so many little creatures.

"Then I guess..." Now what? The idea had seemed to be a good one at the time, and then a nerve-wracking one for a few moments, and honestly he wasn't sure it would end well. But the offer had been made and accepted and... then? "Were you on your way to go someplace?" Iphis asked after a few moments. "Or do you live around here?"

"Oh, I don't really have a home..." she sighed, weaving between his legs like a cat, letting her fluffy tails tickle at the soft fur around his hooves and claws. "I will just follow you for a little while, so you can protect me. Unless, well, I don't want to keep you grounded," she said, looking at his big golden wings. "I bet you're a marvelous flier. Do you like to fly? I've always been a little jealous of those who can..."

No home? Iphis stared down at the fox weaving between his legs, his ears leaning slightly lower as she said that. It was so hard not to have a home... poor little fox. At least nothing had tried to eat him since he left, perhaps it was a perk of being a monster. Predators might simply not prey upon each other... but he dearly hoped that wasn't it. If it were... if it were then that would mean they could recognize the monster in him. Iphis truly hoped no one ever saw it, though it would be much better if it just went away altogether.

"Grounded? Oh no, you're not keeping me from anything," Iphis hastened to assure her. "I can't really fly much at all," he admitted with just a bit of reluctance. "I guess... I guess now I've got a chance to find someone to teach me though. Having wings is great and all," he continued happily, fanning one to gaze at his soft, shining feathers. A blessing. Maybe he could live up to it if he tried hard enough, he just had to try harder... "But I would love to know what to do with them. They're so pretty, but they could be really useful too. I bet my dad was a fantastic flier, so I'm sure I could figure out how to be good at more than just gliding." Angeni and winds could fly, even if they were mixed a little with something else. And a dainty, delicate cerynei like his mother couldn't really have added anything that would weigh him down. If anything, her tiny fluffy tail only made him lighter, right?

"So..." he mused, folding his wing carefully back into place. "If you're not really going anywhere in particular, and I'm not looking for a somewhere so much as a someone to teach me... I guess it doesn't really matter which way we go?" Iphis wondered, already feeling more than a little lost in his newly offered promise of protection. What was he supposed to do? "Was... there anything... or anywhere... you wanted to go?" he asked, "Mountains or oceans or... anywhere really." They really could go anywhere couldn't they. How... how amazing. Anywhere. No one would tell them it was too far from the herd, the sky really was the limit as soon as he got himself some sort of teacher. Lots of soquili had to be around, someone would have wings and then Iphis would fly too. And the little fox was probably right that he would be marvelous at it-

Oh. "Oops," Iphis said sheepishly, ducking his head. "I forgot... I'm sorry, my name is Iphis. I should've said sooner." Rude much? Geez.

"Oh, Iphis is a lovely name," she schmoozed. "I can't believe one with as pretty and big wings as your can't fly. You should learn, and quickly! You know, I've heard of a herd," she started, looking towards the mountains, "That is full of winged creatures like yourself. Why, I"m sure they would love to teach you!"

She chucked, a plan forming in her mind. Lead the pretty yellow peacock up into the dangerous mountains, then make sure he couldn't get down too easily. No way Balrog and his lot would help a cripple like himself... if she knew him as well as she thinks she did. That arrogant arse.

"My name is Kumi, by the way."

Iphis ducked his head, shuffling his wings self-consciously as the fox commented upon his inability to fly. None of the others had wings, how was he supposed to learn? Jump off a cliff? Somehow that had never seemed like the best idea... he'd need some sort of instructions prior to that to feel even slightly comfortable with that idea. But her suggestion that she might actually know of a herd that could teach him, an entire herd, was intriguing. Nervewracking. But intriguing... sort of. Would he be expected to stay with them? That couldn't possibly end well... then again, he was already promising to stay with Kumi and that couldn't end well either. Not with his record of things.

“Well, it's a pleasure to meet you, Kumi,” Iphis replied sunnily, though his mind was now thoroughly elsewhere. He wanted to learn, and a herd of winged soquili... that could really be amazing. But... what if... what if they found out that he... Iphis shifted slightly, his talons digging into the earth a bit. “You said the herd lives up the mountains?” he asked, trying to appear less nervous than he was and not sure if he was managing it. “What... what are they like? I mean... like... it's okay if I look different, right?” No one else in his herd had these claws, these talons that he did. No one else had been a monster, and know they knew better than to trust someone like him now. Would other herds?

What are they like, Kumiho thought to herself with a frown. They were arrogant, haughty, and foolish...what's what they were. But she had to keep up the ruse. "Well, they are very kind towards those that have wings, that's all I really know," she said. Still, the bile was rising in her throat and she shook her head. "As for looking different..." she tried to do a mental inventory of who she knew in the heard, and she couldn't remember any clawed Soq as himself there. "Well, I'm not sure. But as long as you have wings I don't think they would care," she said. That was a lie, of course. She knew the Thunderbirds hated the Kalona and their ilk; so she was unsure how they would react to one such as himself.

If he even made it that far...
