Now Tepezade knew that the place his father had gone was full of strong, warrior lions. His father hadn't been large or strong, his mother had admitted long ago, but very smart instead and quick and clever. He'd win any fight if it was to win them a home. Tepe had never fought before, but he thought he might have to, once he found the desert lions. So it mad sense that he'd need to find someone to fight WITH to get used to it and get stronger.
And today...today luck was on his side. Doubly on his side, because not only had he bumped into a lion who claimed his younger brother had also gone to find the desert pride, but the same lion had agreed to spar with him a bit, just to see how he'd do. The brown lion was about his size - a bit bigger, but he'd clearly fought before. Kymashungi had a cool sort of confidence that Tepe lacked, and much more muscle. He'd have to work around that, the dark lion decided as he faced off against his 'enemy'.

Tepe struck first, when he thought the opponent wouldn't think he was ready yet. He sprang off his hind legs, reaching wide with only just-sheathed claws for the 'enemy'. It was just like hunting, he told himself, except that the 'food' could hit back. He closed well for a beginner, and landed a glancing blow on the brown male's shoulder before trying to dance away out of reach. Of course, something that didn't occur to him was that this was on solid ground. Moving so quickly and easily was much harder in slowly shifting sand. But then again, if he had realized he'd note his opponent had that advantage right now too.

Kymashungi for his part had done a fair bit of tussling with his brothers when he was younger. He could hold his own despite being the runt of that litter, and knew a beginner when he saw one. He determined to go easy on the darker lion, at least until he got used to fighting. He was a bit surprised when the newbie leapt right into it, but not so much that he was caught unawares. He returned a light blow of his own as the male darted away, grazing a flank well firmly enough to remind him that fights could be dangerous if he didn't watch his back.

Of course Tepe'd known he was leaving himself open! Really he had! Of course, he fought not to grimace at the feel of a paw grazing his flank. It hadn't hurt, not at all, but it still made it clear that if this was real life or death it probably would have hurt, very badly. Determined not to look bad any more, he spun on a dime and leapt again, this time truly getting the better of the brown lion and boxing him soundly on the side of the head. Ha ha! He'd be seeing stars after that, poor fellow!

Okay, so Kyma really hadn't seen that one coming. That'd teach him to underestimate the dark lion again. He shook his vision back to clarity and struck out, landing a glancing blow (that made his frown pull to be deeper - he was rustier than he'd thought!) and he backed off, frowning. "Not bad for a beginner. You must have your father's blood if you're this good already. You'd make a fine desert lion, I think."

Tepe felt his spirits soar at the praise. He'd never wanted anything but to be like his father, absent or not. The lion was his hero, his idol, the standard he strove to match. Of course, overconfidence was never a good thing... His next attack was overeager, obvious, and ducked without trouble by the lion who was his opponent. Still, he didn't feel any sort of disappointment. If he was already this good, he'd be fine by the time he got to the desert! He just knew it! Then his father would be terribly proud of him, and together they'd become two of the greatest fighters in all of Africa!

The brown lion however suddenly began to have his doubts. Something about the easy way Tepe had given up his drive to really try hard, had just swung wild as if it didn't matter and he'd already won..it didn't sit quite right. It was nothing he could put his paw exactly on, however, and so he let the younger male walk away with the win. Honestly he did have some talent, and if he could just focus he'd undoubtedly be fine. Maybe no great warrior of legend, but well enough. "That's enough, I think. You've got the basics now. Just don't forget that when you get close, you can get hit as well as attack your opponent. You have to protect yourself."

But Tepe would not listen, didn't hear. He was already too busy imagining himself meeting his father after he proved himself a great warrior. He'd earn his place, save his father, and together they'd go fetch his mother to be the queen. Then they would rule, and one day he'd be king, and he'd make both his mother and father proud. It was one hell of a fantasy, and one that would never come to be even the slightest bit true, but he did not yet realize it.
"I'll try to remember that," He was earnest and genuine, which sated the brown lion, though already his mind was wandering again. It wasn't that he meant to disregard his partner's advice, simply that he felt he'd already absorbed it when he'd not. He'd pay for the assumption later, but for now there was no hard. He would grow as a fighter between now and reaching the desert, it was true, but he'd also realize once he made it that high spirits and bravado did little in the face of lions nearly half again your own size.
All puffed up with his own pride, the dark lion jogged off to fetch a drink from the nearest watering hole, letting his brown partner trail quietly and pensively after.
